Flevoland’s fun
Accept the challenge with yourself
Jack Vreugdenhil from Utrecht:
4
‘As a water sports enthusiast, I visit Flevoland on a regular basis, and
challenge myself surfing and kiting. Timing is important. I sometimes
weigh the options and take the plunge at the right time, sometimes
literally.
A friend of mine, Mark, regularly goes catamaran sailing. The Muiderzand
catamaran beach near Almere is the largest catamaran beach in Europe,
with about 450 catamarans and a trendy beach club. It is the perfect
place for a lovely day.
We sometimes go waterskiing or wakeboarding with groups of friends.
In Almere this can be done with a cable and at Biddinghuizen and Zee
wolde behind a boat, for instance. We are constantly trying to improve
our stunts and at the end of the day we always return home with a big
smile on our faces.’

The Giers family from
Deventer: ‘Our neighbours
told us that canoes can go on
the Noorderplassen. They had
so much fun canoeing and
enjoyed the water and Almere
skyline tremendously, so we
decided to go too. It was a
very special experience. We
had to figure out how to control the canoe and saw some
fringes of reed from really up
close. But once we got the
hang of it, we did fine. Our
neighbours sailed a sloop for
the first time this year. We
had done that a number of
times from Zeewolde and
Marknesse. It doesn’t require
a navigation licence or
experience and we were so
enthusiastic that our neighbours wanted to try it also.
They really came to like it.’

Beaches: Flevoland hotspots
Almeerderstrand is the perfect location for sunbathing and relaxing. Conclude the day at the
beach at the outdoor café of Strandpaviljoen
Poortdock.
After a day of cultural activities on the former
island of Urk, regain your breath at the foot of
the lighthouse or have a dip in the water at the
Urkerstrand.
Spend some time at the Kaap Flevo beach
club at the Woldstrand of the Flevomeer, with
delicious and honest food and friendly staff. The
charming basic interior makes you feel right at
home.
Don’t hesitate to bring your dog; at the Erke
mederstrand near Zeewolde dogs are allowed
to run free, swim and play.
Be lulled to sleep
Mr Janssens from Balkbrug: ‘I love setting out on the water with my
wife and we occasionally hire a motor cruiser. The Flevoboulevard at the
Veluwemeer is just so pretty. We sail the Randmeren and visit places like
Harderwijk and Elburg. I really enjoy a weekend on the water, especially
spending the night on the water and being rocked to sleep. We always
return home well-rested and with our lungs filled with fresh air.
Tough at the helm
Mr Zoetekouw from Zwolle: ‘Once a year, we hire a yacht with our
children and grandchildren. We prefer the more open waters, so we
like to start at the Muiderzand near Almere or at the Bataviahaven near
Lelystad. It is lovely to see how our children enjoy sailing. Our grandchildren feel really cool when they are allowed to hold the helm. I point
out
the beautiful environment and special water birds to everyone.
A family trip on the water is a real must!’

‘We love to prepare
a delicious organic
breakfast for our
guests as an extra.’
An overnight stay at
Waterland Logies with your
horse ispure delight
When you enter the premises through the beautiful wooded fence, you cannot but be
overwhelmed by a sense of tranquillity. The horse pasture, which developed naturally,
immediately catches the eye, and the grandeur of the farm covers you like a warm
blanket. Geese cheerfully waddle among the horses at the pool. An overnight stay at
Waterland Logies with your horse is pure delight, but also lovely without a horse.
Daughter Fenna runs the livery
service with Quarter Horses.
Fenna is multiple European
champion in reining. In addition to training and breeding
high-quality Quarter Horses, she
is also involved in rearing foals.
Fenna: ‘Young horses can play
and run in the pasture where
they live in a herd.’
Miep van Hees and Tjeerd Elzinga heartily
welcome you to Waterland, an organic
market garden and livery service in the
Lelystad-Noord organic agricultural domain.
Waterland Logies is a true Eldorado for
horses and their carers. Miep: ‘We have
created two charming and comfortably
designed Scandinavian-styled apartments
with a kitchen unit, TV and Internet connection. Guests and their horses are more
than welcome here; we have the proper
facilities and space. Waterland Logies
is located near wonderful scenic areas
such as the Oostvaardersplassen and
the Zuigerplasbos. This is a magnificent
environment for riding, hiking and cycling.’
Unexpected vastness in Lelystad
Miep and Tjeerd enjoy the friendliness on
the premises. ‘Everyone is free to look
around. Some guests go collecting eggs
or chat with Tjeerd to hear the wonderful
stories about Flevoland and our company.
Foreign guests in particular love that; they
think it is very special indeed to live below
the sea level.’ Miep and Tjeerd also receive
many Dutch guests. ‘They are usually surprised by the varying areas in and around
Lelystad. They don’t expect wooded areas
and the vastness in a modern city like
Lelystad.’

Urk hospitality with
an adventurous touch
The restaurant looks sturdy, modern and authentic and the hospitable ambiance of De Boet restaurant is very
inviting indeed. In summer, enjoy your lunch at the charming outdoor café right next to the quay and hear the
waves splashing when a smack sails into the harbour.
De Boet restaurant consists of two historic buildings renovated by Cees and Zwanie Kramer and transformed into
a beautiful restaurant with plenty of hospitable options.
Cees: ‘My father used to have a supermarket on Urk and
we would sometimes deliver groceries together. Many
clients offered us a cup of coffee or some soup at noon.
This hospitality is normal on Urk, and we want to put this
across. Come in and we will take care of the rest.’
Enjoyment between the ship’s masts
The restaurant exudes the atmosphere of Urk with its decor
in the style of Urk traditional costume and antique masts
of fishing vessels that used to be built in De Boet. In 2011,
the restaurant was on the 52nd place of the Lekker magazine. Cees: ‘Yes, we are naturally quite proud of that’.
Hospitality from India to Urk
De Boet has some fish and meat dishes on the menu with
a slight oriental twist. ‘Zwanie en I have visited various
distant countries: Vietnam, Thailand and India. We go
backpacking through the country for two weeks, to get
close to the people. We bring the tastes, special spices
and colours back with us and process them in our dishes.
We enjoy oriental hospitality greatly, people are always
welcome to stay for a meal or spend the night. It is as
normal as going to bed and getting up. In the Netherlands,
hospitality in the catering business is an issue. Urk has
always been hospitable, as is De Boet, without giving it a
second thought.’
Indulge your
taste buds

Whether a visit to a pancake restaurant with the children, or an
extensive meal in a top restaurant with the two of you, there are
plenty of lovely restaurants in Flevoland where you can indulge
your taste buds. Following are some examples.

I particularly liked the El

cool also. This is the longest,

The people of the Natuurpark thought we were really

Rick (7): ‘We went to Aqua Mundo, where they have the

My mother bought a booklet with a real treasure map
at the Tourist Information Office. Together with my friend,
I walked the witch route, which was fun and exciting.
We also learned magic spells. My brother is only six and
walked the pirate route with my Dad. But my Dad said
that he only wanted to climb and crawl through pipes.’ Selina (8): ‘During the

Almere. I did not know
very much about art.
I draw a lot and my mother

Have you ever been in or under a work of art? This is possible in Flevoland,
where they have Land Art; art in the ‘unlimited outdoor space’. This space pro
vides artists with the opportunity to intervene in the landscape or add something
to the existing environment. There is no place in the world with this amount of
Land Art.
Visit the Groene Kathedraal (Green Cathedral) in Almere, designed with Italian
poplars after the example of the Cathedral of Reims. In Zeewolde, Sea Level
shows how high the water would be if it wasn’t held back by dykes. The con
crete wall makes you very conscious of the fact that you are under the actual
level of the water. A very special experience.
‘I love to submerge myself in art’
This year, I will walk part of the 200kilometre Pioniersroute (Pioneer route)
with a friend. The route includes all
kinds of works of art that are not really
managed but placed somewhere and
left alone, delivered to nature. And that
is the exciting thing about it; the works
of art thus grow back to the past.
I often find interesting art and cultural
tips in www.visitflevoland.nl with plenty
more addresses.’

Explore Africa in the polder
There are many wonderful galleries throughout Flevoland, many of which are established
in Almere Haven. You can also find several
interesting galleries and exhibition spaces in
Dronten and Zeewolde. If you like to enjoy
art outside, be sure to go to Klein Afrika in
Marknesse, a sculpture garden with stone
objects from Zimbabwe. Styles vary from
traditional African to modern and abstract.
In the gallery are paintings, batik fabrics,
woodcarving and musical instruments. If you
want to discover the artist in you, in summer
participate in a workshop by an African artist
to develop your creativity. Who knows, maybe
you will open your own studio!

a real theaterspektacle
Once more, the Apollo Ensemble comes with a musical, artistic and
delicious concept. The festival features classical music from France (18th through 21st

other forms of art,
such as photography,

This year, Vis à Vis deals with the phenomenon
of recycling. What happens with these huge
heaps of refuse remaining after separation of
recyclable elements?? And how about the
‘human’ remains swept under the carpet in
our modern society?

Plays family performances and youth theatre Almere
Rugged land or theatre in the wild is a
special combination of a nature workshop
& theatre performance. It is performed at
various locations on the outskirts of the
city, where city children first learn how to
live and survive in the wilderness and then
see how four actors try to cope in the
wild. Be sure to wear old clothes and be
tough and strong because in the wild you
have to do everything yourself. For children
aged 7. Year 3/4 through 5/6.

On the Urk bulge
to the Late Stone Age. Be surprised
When exploring Urk, you are ‘on’ Urk, despite
the fact that it is no longer an island. After the
construction of the Northeast Polder, in 1939 Urk
became part of the mainland. The Urk fishery
did not seem to have a future because after the
construction of the IJsselmeer Dam, the IJsselmeer
became a freshwater lake. The Urk inhabitants,
however, rolled with the times and turned the
tide by starting to fish the North Sea.
Urk managed to maintain its special culture and
dialect. Should you hear anyone speak of ‘the
bulge’, they are referring to ancient Urk. This is
where the people used to live, because the lowerlying ground would flood on a regular basis. Now
that this risk has been overcome, houses have
been constructed on the lower-lying parts.
and learn all about this newly-built
838
Originally, Urk and Schokland were part of a
peninsula in the eastern part of Flevo Lacus.
Urk was probably separated from Schokland
by a storm tide in 838.
Astonishing Flevoland history
Does Flevoland make history yet?
Has a young province like this experienced enough to write books and fill
museums? Certainly it has! Flevoland
may be the youngest Dutch province,
but the history of this area goes back
land.
26
Origination of Flevoland
The Flevo Lacus lake, about 40-410 AD, changed
into Aelmere (about 450-1050), in Sudersee in 1340
and in Zuider Zee in 1600. In 1891, Lely B Sc
designed a plan for reclamation.

Exploring the past
Suppose you are an archaeologist and excavate
all kinds of tools, pots, jewellery and even a
complete skeleton during excavations around
Swifterbant. What a discovery! The civilisation
found is given the name of the Swifterbant culture. In the prehistoric settlement in Natuurpark
Lelystad, see how things were done in the Late
Stone Age. If you want to know more, inquire
at the Nieuw Land Museum. And if you think
children will not be interested in a museum,
you are mistaken! With a quest through the
museum, they are challenged to learn all about
the Swifterbant people and the origination of
Flevoland.
With thanks to
Nieuw Land for
the photos.
1446
Schokland:
cleared island, today World Heritage
Schokland used to be a peninsula and became
an island around 1450, due to the rising water
of the Zuider Zee. More than four centuries later,
it had to be definitively cleared due to major and
repeated flooding. When the Noordoostpolder fell
dry in 1942, Schokland became an island on land.
Squeezed together in a barracks
1939
The Ringdijk of the Noordoostpolder was the
start of the creation of the current province of
Flevoland. In 1940, the final piece was closed
off after which the reclamation of the polder
was initiated.
www.visitflevoland.nl
How would you like to live in a barracks with
hundred other people in a region without any
facilities? From 1942, workers from all over the
Netherlands came to the Noordoostpolder to
construct roads, ditches, channels, farms and
houses. They lived in over thirty wooden barracks. They worked hard during the day, played
games in the evening and went to bed early to
get some rest for the next day of hard physical
labour. In Tollebeek, you can see an original
barracks where once two families lived. Did I
hear something about the good old times?
RES BELOW SEALEVEL...
1943
In 1943, the first residents of the Noordoost-
polder moved into their houses in Emmeloord.
Relocation plans: after a selection
procedure
In 1446, Schokland,
which was connected to
the mainland by a strip
of peat bog after the sepa
ration of Urk, became an
island as a result of the
rising water of the Zuider
zee.
If you are planning to move, you simply find a
nice house and that’s it. The procedure to get
established as one of the first inhabitants in the
Noordoostpolder was a lot more complicated.
The IJsselmeerpolders Development Authority
strived for the perfect population. The authority
wanted people from all parts of the Netherlands
and looked for a proportional segmentation of
various religious convictions. Having administrative experience was also important in the bare
villages without any facilities and naturally references were gathered. How would you like it if
the authority came to check your cupboards to
see whether you had your affairs well-managed?
This could happen to you in earlier times, but rest
assured if you want to move to the Noordoost
polder now. Times have changed!
Markings for time capsules
A wrecked ship resembles a time capsule. With the model ship, the load and
the inventory, you can obtain all kinds of information about the history.
The Zuiderzee was dangerous because of the storms and seaways that
silted up. Many ships were lost, leaving Flevoland as a big ship cemetery.
Many ships were salvaged during the reclamation and 68 are left in the
ground. The locations are indicated with blue and white striped poles with
a red ship on top. Try and see where more time capsules are hidden!
28
1948
After the discovery of the first shipwreck in 1948 in the Noordoostpolder,
over four hundred more were found in Flevoland.
Nagele: straight lines and flat roofs
When entering the village of Nagele, the straight
lines immediately stand out. Nagele has a spacious
lay-out and the flat roofs enhance this spatial
feeling. The village was designed at the drawing
table in the 1950 and invented into detail accor
ding to the modern style of the Nieuwe Bouwen.
In 1956, Nagele was a fact, and one year later
eastern Flevoland was reclaimed. If you were
looking at the reclaimed soil, you would see one
large mud plain. Lots had to be done before this
area for ready for living, working and recreation.
In 1962, the first resident of Biddinghuizen was
presented his key. Swifterbant and Dronten wel
comed their first civilians shortly after that.

Crash route: it leaves you silent
Sometimes you have to be silent to honour your
fellow man. In addition to wrecked ships, Flevoland
also has many wrecked aeroplanes, particularly
planes that crashed during the Second World War.
These wrecks were found and stowed when Flevo
land was reclaimed. The Stichting 4 mei Herdenking
Dronten has taken the initiative to put up landmarks
at the locations of the plane crashes, so you just
might see the first blue and white striped poles with
a red plane on top around Dronten and Lelystad.
Texts on the poles state where planes were crashed
and the names of the crew. It leaves you silent...
With thanks to Nieuw Land for the photos.
Flevoland: sensational architecture
1976
In 1968, south Flevoland was reclaimed. In
1976, the first residents moved to Almere
Haven. Today, Almere has just under 200,000
residents.
OVE SEALEVEL
1967
10 years after the reclamation of east Flevoland in 1957, the first residents came to Lelystad, and in 1962 to Dronten.
Capital with history
You might wonder how Lelystad got its name.
As the capital of the IJsselmeer polders, the city
was named after the founder of the Zuiderzee
Project, engineer Cornelis Lely. In 1986, eastern
and southern Flevoland, the Noordoostpolder
and Urk together formed the province of Flevo
land. Lelystad remained the capital, where there
is much to learn about the history of the Nether
lands’ youngest province. Museum Nieuw Land,
the Bataviawerf and Natuurpark Lelystad high
light the construction of Flevoland and even the
times when the IJsselmeerpolders were not even
considered. So there is plenty to explore!
Almere: raising construction to art
Suppose you live in a garret room in Amsterdam
and have the opportunity to move to a house with
a garden in Almere. When Amsterdam renovated
entire districts, many residents seized the oppor
tunity to move to Almere. Meanwhile, this city
is among the fastest growing cities in the Nether
lands. In 1985, Almere had 40,000 residents, and
today just under 200,000. This young city is parti
cularly known for its exciting architecture, so be
sure to obtain an architecture guide or interactive
I-Tour at the Tourist Information to see how con
struction has been raised to an art by bike or car.
This is also interesting if you are no expert in
the area of architecture.
www.visitflevoland.nl
Thanks to the pioneering spirit, Flevoland exceeded all expectations by far with modern
villages and cities. This also applies to the architecture. Admire the Agora theatre in Lelystad,
the design of which received international recognition. Visit Almere, which is a real explosion
of architectonic tours de force. Flevoland keeps developing because it is in the genes.

They burst under our shoes with

of them sea creatures that did not
survive because the sea became
land. Flevoland.
A true scenic
paradise
The green secret
Shells slowly dissolve under the influence of rain, sun and wind and
the calcium seeps through the clayey
structures. This chalk whips up soil life
to shimmering activity, which is the
secret of the spectacular development
of the Flevoland countryside. The
excretion products of this soil
life are perfect nutrition for plant
roots. Wooded areas and bushes
grow vibrantly from the fertile soil,
naturally resulting in equally vibrant
animal life. Roe deer jump away
left and right and birdsong is heard
everywhere.
Nature works out all right
We carefully make our way through
the wood and see buzzards, sparrow
hawks, a white-tailed eagle and owls.
You might see a fox in clear daylight, and there are areas with wild horses
and rough cattle, red deer and wild geese, hedgehogs, ermines and weasels.
Nature works out all right on the soil of the former Zuider Zee.
Flevoland: magnificent sunsets
While driving home across the dykes after a day of scenic enjoyment, we see
the copper red sun go under in the smooth water of the border lake, the wet
domain of bronze brown carps, ‘floor mats’ of bream and innumerable other
fish species. This is also Flevoland: a sea of nature above as well as under the
sea level.
