I AM THE ONE
I like to throw people out of balance
I like to throw people out of care
I like to throw people in the darkness
I like to throw people everywhere;
It doesn’t matter what planet they land on
Nor what world they come to rule
The only thing that matters is
That they come to know they are utter fools.
To think that they can control me
To think that they can win I am the most dominant of all
The one who stands and has no kin.
10
16
The one who bares no reflection in the mirror,
The one who seems least likely of all
But the one who’s borne the pain brought by
others now unknown.
The candidate that looks the weakest,
But the one that can secretly stand on their own,
The one who used to be stuck in Limbo.
That One, is the one that should have the right
to bear the thrown.

CATHOLIC!
As a community formed by our
Catholic faith, Bishop Moore
Catholic is able to provide our
students of today with the same
assurance of our students of old.
That is, as reliable as change may
be, our strong identity of faith
remains perpetual through time.
Furthermore, it is our belief in
this true faith that gives us the

world that can be very confusing

person of true faith one achieves
great serenity as the journey of
life presents its inevitable twists

sam,
son of Angie and Patrick Mahoney '86,
received a prestigious appointment to the United States Naval
Academy from U.S. Senator Bill Nelson (FL).
Sam’s words reflecting on this
monumental experience:
For as long as I can remember, I have had
an uncommon desire to serve in our nation’s
military. That desire has become stronger as I
have grown older. The one thing that makes
me happiest in this world is seeing the joy
on the faces of my family members, friends,
and peers every single day. I want to fight for
our country because I want all of them to be
able to enjoy the freedom they experience in
the U.S.A. This past summer I heard a quote
from a Naval Academy alumnus, Travis Manion,
who gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting
his comrades. When asked why he was going
back to fight, Travis answered, "If not me...
then who?" These five words capture exactly
why I want to serve. In the seventh grade,
I set my sights upon the United States Naval
Academy and I haven't looked back since.
Not a day has gone by in which I haven't
thought about this dream. The people I have
met at and through Bishop Moore over these
four years have proven to me that there is
something worth fighting for. I would not
be the person I am today if I had not grown
up in this wonderful environment. This
journey toward my goal over the past six
years has been a long one and I cannot be
more thankful for everyone who has helped
me and motivated me along the way. I am
extremely grateful to have received an
Offer of Appointment to the United States
Naval Academy. This, however, is only the
beginning. I look forward to the future and
cannot wait to start my next journey in life
with God by my side.

their children’s education in order to maximize their potential and enable
them to work toward building a Haiti where justice and peace thrive.

“The field trip to Café Selecto was a huge
success because it allowed the students to
see the real world application of economics
along with experiencing how a successful
Haitian business can be run. The students
asked challenging questions that created
interesting dialogue about production of
goods and services along with discussion
of strategies that could improve market
outcomes. The students used their knowledge
of supply and demand, inflation, elasticity
of markets, and the principles of economics
to figure out what made Café Selecto a
successful company. We were also able to
see the production process in action and the
efficiency that can take place.”

Amy Bradick Klausner ’06 is an alumni and current
teacher of English at BMC. “Having great teachers
in my life and feeling the need to have that same
effect on others gave me the inspiration to become
a teacher myself. Once I earned my Master’s degree,
it was time to enter the workforce. I called Ms.
Kane, then-principal at Bishop Moore, on the offchance that there would be an opening, and was
told I would be considered if anything opened up.
In my mind, working at Bishop Moore was always
an end-goal — something with which I could cap
off my successful career.”
“Being an alumnus is an important responsibility — serving as models for future
Hornets on their life paths. Being a teacher-alumnus is an even greater responsibilty.
Like many before me, I can only hope that I am able to have that successful career
I’ve always envisioned as a teacher — at Bishop Moore, my home.”

PRESENTED BY
The Perreault Family
Charitable Fund
There is something special about Bishop
Moore Catholic that words fail to describe.
It’s a legacy of excellence; a courageous
missionary of our Catholic faith; a supportive
family. On November 22, 2014, almost 600
members of the Bishop Moore Catholic
family gathered for the inaugural Legacy
Gala celebration of all that is and the
cherished legacy of Catholic education.
The primary focus of the evening was to
honor three individuals who have made
a lasting impact on Catholic education in
Central Florida. “Catholic schools are more
than academic institutions. We are communities
which inspire by teaching God’s word,
living God’s message, and loving God’s
people,” said Principal Scott Brogan.
From the moment the community learned
the identity of our honorees, we began to
hear stories of how God has blessed Catholic
education in Central Florida through each
of them. Together we celebrated Alumnus
David Powers, Class of ’74, Sister Elizabeth
Marie Stoup, Founder of Morning Star
Catholic School, and Father Richard Walsh,
Pastor of St. Margaret Mary Catholic
Church and School.
16
At the Gala, Dave Powers was surrounded
by friends who he referred to as “family”
whom he has known since his days as a student
at Bishop Moore Catholic. As a former
member of the Black and Gold Brigade,
our school band, Dave was beaming as
they marched in and played several songs,
ending with our Alma Mater.
How is Dave’s legacy continuing at
Bishop Moore Catholic?
Dave is a living example
as he serves on the
Catholic School Board
for the Diocese
of Orlando while
continuing to support
Bishop Moore Catholic
as well. He almost
single handedly reignited the Bishop
Moore vs. Edgewater rivalry two years ago
with the Battle of College Park. The Grow
Moore Miracles campaign, which Dave
chaired, provided the funds needed to
complete our impressive Athletic Stadium,
nine new science labs, and our TEAL labs.
Sister Elizabeth Marie Stoup smiled
brightly as she reflected on the flourishing
relationship between Bishop Moore Catholic
and Morning Star Catholic schools. She has
been a tireless advocate for children and
adults with intellectual and developmental
challenges, and she shared with us how
much our support has meant to these
efforts.
How is Sister Elizabeth’s Legacy
continuing at Bishop Moore Catholic?
Today, Morning Star Catholic School
students join us for liturgies, athletics, and
occasionally classes. When they come on
campus, our students are quick to run to
them with open arms. We are also deeply
involved in the Best Buddies program,
where our students
visit Morning Star
school to spend time
with the students
there. This relationship
is a great blessing to
Bishop Moore Catholic.
Finally, Father Richard Walsh, a treasured
member of the family was honored. Father
Walsh thanked everyone in attendance for
understanding the importance of Catholic
education. With tears in his eyes, he
dedicated the award
to his recently deceased
brother, who had
passed on such a
legacy of faith to
Father Walsh himself.
We hadn’t realized
how far the Bishop Moore family reached
until Father Walsh told the crowd that John
Moore, the Bishop after whom our school
was named, lived right down the street
from his family in Ireland!
Father Walsh’s legacy continues as the
families who he has helped to build a
foundation of faith join the Bishop Moore
Catholic community. They come to us well
prepared, academically and spiritually,
for the next stage of their lives. He is a
determined and strong voice for Catholic
education which continues to resonate
throughout the Diocese of Orlando.
Proceeds from the evening, totaling over
$140,000 benefited the Maureen J. Kane,
Guardian Angel Fund. Ana Crowe, our
Director of Alumni, shared a touching story
about a single mother who endured a long
and courageous battle with cancer while her
children attended Bishop Moore Catholic.
“I won’t be able to leave my children
much,” she told Ana, “but I will be able
to leave them a Catholic education, which
they will take with them forever.” This
fund has helped many families, such as
hers, by covering expenses during difficult
times, allowing the students to stay with
their Bishop Moore family.
We not only support our own families, but
Bishop Moore Catholic strives to provide
opportunities for our
students which go beyond
our campus borders.
“As missionaries, we are
called to not only recognize
the Christ dwelling
within, but to bring that
Christ to others,” said
Principal Scott Brogan.
With this reminder, he
introduced two Bishop
Moore Catholic Seniors
whose missionary
journeys have tied them
together both in Orlando
and in our sister diocese in the
Dominican Republic.
and caring people of La Cucarita. The
poverty of the community was shocking
to our mission students as they saw homes
no bigger than their bedrooms, teetering
on the sides of these mountains with no
electricity and no running water.
“Everywhere I looked, there were smiling
faces and people were constantly giving
what little they had,” explained Sam. His
faith grew tremendously on this journey,
and he implored those at the Gala to give to
the Fund-A-Cause, Mission Trips, to help
other students afford such a life-changing
opportunity.
The powerful stories of legacy and mission
shared that evening were accompanied by
joyful reunions as people reconnected after
many years. The smiles and laughter were
infectious as people shared memories of
their Hornet history.
The voices of our choir echoed throughout
the night in our hearts: Our spirit is undaunted,
Our hearts are ever bold, Oh Bishop Moore
we praise thee, and hail the BLACK AND
GOLD!
One student, Luis Jose (LJ),
attends Bishop Moore Catholic
on scholarship. He grew up in
the Dominican Republic and
learned in mission schools, built
by the Diocese of Orlando.
Over the years, LJ has become
a part of the family that we all
cherish. “The people of Bishop
Moore have made me feel like
a part of their community,
so it means a lot to me
that I can welcome them
to my community in La
Cucarita when they come
on mission trips,” he told
a captivated crowd.
Sam, a senior who has
been born and raised
in Winter Park, took a
leap of faith going on the
mission trip. This fear
quickly subsided once
Sam met the generous

frederick lauten ‘71
Frederick Lauten graduated from Bishop Moore Catholic
High School in 1971. While here, he was involved in Key
Club, basketball, the drama club, and CYO. After leaving
the halls of Bishop Moore, Fred enrolled at Rollins College
in nearby Winter Park where he earned his bachelor of
arts in history and a master’s of business administration.
Still in the pursuit of academic excellence, Fred attended
Villanova University where he obtained his juris doctorate
in 1979.

Lauten began his legal career as an
associate in Longwood at the Law Office
of Bryan C. Hugo. In 1981, he moved to
Washnington, DC for one year as an associate at Tierney & Swift,
P.A. Upon returning to Orlando, Fred worked for over 10 years as
an assistant state attorney before being appointed by late Governor
Lawton Chiles as an Orange County criminal judge in 1993.
In 1999, then-Governor Jeb Bush appointed Fred to the OrangeOsceola County circuit court. While with the circuit court, he has
served in various capacities from civil, criminal, and traffic courts
to administrative positions. Most recently, on August 31, 2014,
Frederick Lauten was elevated to the position of chief judge of the
Ninth Judicial Circuit. On being selected as the chief judge by his
colleagues, Judge Lauten said “I am honored to be chosen as Chief
Judge and I pledge to continue in the tradition of Judge Belvin
Perry, Jr. to ensure that citizens of our circuit, regardless of stature,
race, or creed, are afforded their constitutional right to due process
and equal access to justice.”
While not on the bench, Judge Lauten has been a tireless advocate for judicial
education. He proudly served as the Dean of the Florida Judicial College and
currently serves as the Chair of the Education Committee of the Conference of
Circuit Court Judges. More recently, Judge Lauten was able to take time out of his
schedule to speak with a group of Bishop Moore Catholic students who attended
the Red Mass at St. James Cathedral on November 6, 2014.
“I am honored to
be chosen as Chief
Judge and I pledge...
to ensure that citizens
of our circuit, regardless
of stature, race, or
creed, are afforded
their constitutional
right to due process
and equal access to
justice.”

a graced people
On February 1, 2014, ten of our Bishop
Moore Catholic students departed on a
journey to our sister Diocese in the Dominican
Republic. Each student felt the Lord calling
them to serve our brothers and sisters in San
Juan de la Maguana. While they were there,
they not only encountered those on the
fringes of society, but the Lord himself.
At the outset, this trip was not just an
undertaking to meet the educational needs
of Las Lomas. It was first and foremost an
opportunity for our students to be witnesses
in the world of the Love of Christ and to
bring that love to others.
mission
trip 2014
On this mission trip, we visited sacred
ground and a graced people. We met many
individuals in situations drastically different
from our own. What we saw as a result of
those circumstances was not despair, but
hope. Our preconceptions not only of
poverty, but of inner peace were challenged.
Where God was present, joy reigned.
The final night of faith sharing was very
meaningful as Sister Bernie was able to
inspire us with her wisdom. We have
learned to say “yes” to the many challenges
that God has presented us. We are all so
thankful for this opportunity to carry home
the voice of the people in this village and
to use our newly gained knowledge to help
change their lives for the better.
26
The call to action did not end when
we returned home. It is up to us to
shine the light of Christ which we
receive by knowing and serving our
brothers and sisters of another land. Even
now, months later, we gather together as
a group to share, pray, and talk about how
God is calling us to keep this mission alive:
alive in our hearts and in our very own
community of Bishop Moore Catholic.
Each year BMC plans to send another team
to continue this mission. In February 2015,
10 more students and 5 faculty members
will journey to serve in our sister diocese.
We have created a fund which will provide
financial support, making this experience
available to all who feel called and are
selected. To date, we have raised almost
$10,000. If you would like to donate,
please contact Amanda Livermore,
Director of Mission Effectiveness,
at [email protected].
“It’s incredible

a sacred ground
“The patience and strength of the people of
La Cucarita have made us realize how minor our
problems really are back in a place that sounds like
a fantasy world to those we are spending time with.
“The way
Jesus shows
you is not easy.
Rather, it is like
a path winding
up a mountain.
Do not lose heart!
The steeper the
road, the faster
it rises towards
ever wider
horizons.”
Under the stars, we see the same night skies and
in the chapel, we say the same prayers. But, in our
hearts are two different ways that we see the true
beauty.”
Pope Saint John Paul II
“In only a few days, we have become
part of this community, and they share
with us as we share with them. On the
surface, they appear poor, but they are
so rich as they radiate God’s love to us
and we to them.”

died suddenly on September 7th. Her passing was an extreme
shock to the entire community. Even though we are a community
of strong faith and we know where our destiny lies, our grief and
our sorrow runs deep at this loss. With great assurance, we know
that Mrs. Grabowski's life (as with many who teach) will live on
in the future lives of her students.
We grieve together and as a community sustained by God's love,
we celebrate the wonderful presence she was and will remain in
the lives of her Bishop Moore Catholic family.
Rosie Grabowski loved Latin and shared that love with every
one of her students. All were blessed to be a part of her forum.
