The Influence Machine
Presented in St Peter’s Gardens
over four nights, The Influence
Machine is a haunting multimedia work. Videos of talking
heads are projected onto
smoke, trees and buildings,
their fractured monologues
combining to make a
confessional chorus of the
mass media age. It is as if the
ghosts of our modern
machines have been let out to
roam the city at night. The Art
Gallery will be open until 8pm
on 31 October and 1
November.

Mordor
‘Mordor’ conjures images of a
charred wasteland exploited
for its resources.
This exhibition explores the
links between JRR Tolkien’s
depictions of this fantasy region
in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and
the Black Country of the 1900s
which lay a few miles from his
childhood home.

Letters Home
‘Letters Home’ explores different elements of
letters written during the First World War with
displays at Bantock House Museum and the
City Archives. At Bantock House, letters are
displayed alongside objects selected from
Wolverhampton’s collection and items loaned
from local collectors. Thoughts and memories
of everyday life were recorded in letters and
these poignant words are contextualised and
brought to life, presented next to objects that
are symbolic of their thoughts and hopes.
Explore 300 years of
craft through fine
historic examples of
applied arts produced
in the Black Country,
including the famous Craftsense
Bilston enamels. Compare these with current
skill and innovation in exciting contemporary
craft objects, many of which you can touch.
New this autumn is a selection of items from
our handling collection, selected by staff,
volunteers, and friends of the Gallery.

‘Craft and Conflict’ brings together
contemporary and historical items that
commemorate and explore the themes of war
and remembrance. Included are examples of
how local companies and their workforces
assisted with the war effort during the First
World War. Also on display will be work by
contemporary craft makers who explore
themes of conflict and peace, addressing the
human aspect of war and the importance of
remembering past conflicts.

It’s Our World
This exhibition will be a showcase of drawings
and artwork celebrating the Big Draw theme
for 2014, ‘It’s Our World’. Displaying the
creative journey from drawing to full colour,

theme, but an educational experience too.

Sensing Sculpture Permanent Display
Following major refurbishment in 2013,
Sensing Sculpture allows visitors to find out
about modern and classic sculpture by being
able to touch all of the works on display.
There are family favourites, alongside new
commissions and previously undisplayed
works from the Art Gallery’s collection,
as well as activity stations and audio points.

What is enamel? It is the excitement of
creating something using glass and metal and
fusing them together. This exhibition of work
created by members of Region 4 from the
Guild of Enamellers does just that – creating
unique pieces in a variety of styles.

Black Sheep:
The Dark Side of Felt
Felt is the most ancient constructed textile in
the world; in its long and fascinating history it
has been used for everything from military
armour to housing, from cosy winter garments
to conceptual art. This exhibition explores the
edgier side of this extraordinarily versatile
material, looking at artists who create
sometimes disturbing and bizarre oddities and
technically brilliant objects. ‘Black Sheep’ has
been curated by textile artist and felt maker
Laura Mabbutt and is a touring exhibition by
the National Centre for Craft and Design.

First World War Battlefield Paintings

Brian Yale: First World War
Battlefield Paintings
This exhibition of paintings by Cradley-born
artist Brian Yale forms part of the Art Gallery’s
commemoration of the outbreak of the First
World War. After attending Stourbridge School
of Art, Yale studied at the Royal College of Art,
at the same time as David Hockney and Allen
Jones. He was later a designer with the
Greater London Council but during that time
he also pursued his love of painting.
The paintings, dating from the 1980s, are
based on sketches made on the spot of some
of the most famous and tragic battlefields of
the First World War.

The Making of Mordor
Following the closure of the Boulton Paul site
and subsequently the Heritage Centre set up
by the Boulton Paul Association, former
company employees continue to utilise their
engineering skills at Wednesfield High School.
Here they share their knowledge and inspire
future generations of engineers. Having
received the Queen’s Award For Volunteering,
they are celebrating several decades of working
for the company - two of the members have
each clocked up over seventy years of service.
This exhibition explores the links between JRR
Tolkien’s depictions of this fantasy region in
‘The Lord of the Rings’ and the Black Country
of the 1900s.

excellent work undertaken by the School of Art
& Design’s Masters students over the last two
years. It shows their diversity of creative thinking,
skills and professional approach to practice.

will be a two minute silence
