From the vast repertoire of ‘cheer-up’ songs sung by Gracie Fields or George Formby, the wit of Noël Coward, American ‘swing’ music and sentimental songs such as A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square or We’ll Meet Again – join The PDO for music which evokes the war years with a powerful nostalgia that continues to resonate today. Supported by his superb musicians and singer, Michael Law links the songs with fascinating wartime stories and anecdotes. Snape 7.30pm Tickets £27, £22, £17 Prom £6.50 Saturday 30 July 7.30pm Hugh Masekela Band Legendary South African jazz trumpeter It’s remarkable to remember that Hugh Masekela’s breakthrough hit, Grazing in the Grass, was released nearly 50 years ago, selling 4m copies in America and spending two months at number one. Now approaching 80, Masekela has introduced African music to many more millions of people across the world in the six decades since he first left his native South Africa at the height of Apartheid-era violence and oppression, first moving to study in London, helped by Yehudi Menuhin and John Dankworth, and then on to New York. Masekela’s collaborators have ranged from Abdullah Ibrahim in his teenage years to Paul Simon, Dizzy Gillespie, Fela Kuti and even U2. His first visit to the Snape Proms will be a chance to enjoy his uplifting sound and celebrate a life whose obsession, says Masekela, is ‘to show Africans and the world who the people of Africa really are’. Snape 7.30pm Tickets £33, £26, £19 Prom £6.50 Sunday 31 July 7.30pm Monday 1 August 7.30pm Tuesday 2 August 7.30pm Tommy Emmanuel Jon Boden The King’s Singers One of the world’s great acoustic guitarists Charismatic Bellowhead frontman goes solo Kings of a capella Tommy Emmanuel guitar Tommy Emmanuel is a guitarist’s guitarist, with a distinctive, complex ‘fingerstyle’ playing that has its roots in the virtuosic finger magic of Django Reinhardt via Emmanuel’s hero and mentor, the Nashville guitar legend Chet Atkins. Twice GRAMMY nominated, the Australian has embraced jazz, rock, blues and country in the course of his five-decade career. Seeing Emmanuel’s remarkable skill live is a delight – make sure you catch him at his Snape Proms debut. Snape 7.30pm Tickets £23, £19, £15 Prom £6.50 As charismatic pilot of the raucous folk group Bellowhead, Jon Boden has become a figurehead for English traditional music. He is not only a brilliant fiddle player and guitarist but also a distinguished songwriter and composer with theatre and film credits and two albums of original material under his belt. Having thrilled to his performances in recent years, we’re delighted to welcome him for one of his first live solo appearances. Combining a magnetic stage presence with instrumental and songwriting prowess, he mixes his quirky, earthily impassioned renditions of traditional songs with his own original material. Snape 7.30pm Tickets £23, £19, £15 Prom £6.50 Few groups in any genre can boast the longevity or the versatility of these kings of a capella. Their rich vocal blend, telepathic musical understanding and crystal-clear delivery make them great communicators and entertainers. They flit effortlessly from baroque to The Beatles, renaissance madrigals to medleys of jazz, swing and pop. Their programme treads this same joyously eclectic path, incorporating English music from madrigals to Victorian partsong to Flanders and Swann, folk songs from around the world and a closing medley of close-harmony classics. Snape 7.30pm Tickets £25, £21, £16 Prom £6.50 3 4 Wednesday 3 August 7.30pm Thursday 4 August 7.30pm Suffolk Youth Orchestra National Youth Aladdin Suite and Danse Macabre Orchestra Philip Shaw conductor Hannah Littlechild violin Gershwin Cuban Overture 10’ Nielsen Suite from Aladdin 25’ Saint-Saens Danse Macabre 8’ Holst Somerset Rhapsody 9’ Hindemith Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber 21’ The county’s finest young musicians show their mettle in a dazzling array of orchestral showpieces. Gershwin’s shuffling Latin rhythms get the toes tapping and Saint-Saens’ dancing fiddler proves the devil really does have the best tunes. The wonderfully evocative theatre music for Aladdin contains a whiff of exoticism, whilst folk songs from the west country carry us closer to home. Hindemith’s edge-of-your seat virtuosity and blaze of orchestral colour provides a witty, rousing finale. Snape 7.30pm Tickets £18, £15, £12 Prom £6.50 The Planets and Thus Spake Zarathustra Edward Gardner conductor Iris Ter Schiphorst new work (world premiere) 6’ Strauss Thus Spake Zarathustra 33’ Gustav Holst The Planets 51’ A rare chance to hear two of the most popular orchestral showpieces in the same concert. The ferocity of Mars’ mechanised combat and Jupiter’s glorious adopted hymn tune may burn brightest in the musical firmament, but wispy delicacy, rousing fervour and – especially in Neptune’s conclusion – an endlessly circling celestial serenity abound. It’s an energetic ride to the outer reaches of our solar system, complemented by a brand new short work inspired by the contentious and mysterious ‘Planet Nine’. Strauss’s gargantuan tone poem, its majestic opening bars now forever associated with outer space thanks to Kubrick’s 2001, makes for a heavenly counterweight. Snape 7.30pm Tickets £33, £26, £19 Prom £6.50 Pre-Prom Event 6pm Britten Studio, Snape New music by composers from NYO’s Creative Hub Tickets Free but please book Friday 5 August 7.30pm Saturday 6 August 7.30pm Sunday 7 August 7.30pm The Big Chris Barber Band Ian Bostridge Treacherous Orchestra Star tenor sings Schumann and Brahms Scottish traditional tunes with a twist Classic blues, ragtime and jazz Ian Bostridge tenor, Julius Drake piano Chris Barber formed his band in 1949 and now in his seventh decade at the forefront of traditional jazz he shows no sign of slowing down. Surrounded by great instrumentalists, Barber’s mastery of blues, ragtime, spirituals and New Orleans jazz is as fresh and vital as ever. His stage presence and soaring trombone solos remain warm, agile and impeccably judged as he shares his favourite music, from Dixieland standards to numbers by Duke Ellington and Miles Davis. Schumann Heine settings op.127 and op.142 Schumann Dichterliebe And songs by Brahms One of contemporary folk music’s great live experiences, ‘Treacherous’ have an irresistible energy and unstoppable momentum. Theirs is a stunning musical alchemy – drawing on the finest traditional music talent and fusing it into feverish, highly-charged dance music. There’s charisma and charm a-plenty here but also downtime amongst the delirium, a little gentle reflection to counteract the free-wheeling frenzy of fiddle tunes, banjo and accordion licks and whirling pipes. A joyous virtuosic orchestra like no other – but a treacherous one? You decide… Snape 7.30pm Tickets £27, £22, £17 Prom £6.50 Ian Bostridge is one of this country’s great singers, combining a richly expressive and seemingly endlessly versatile voice with deeply-thought interpretations. An evening in his company is rewarding, revealing; his magnetic stage presence draws us into the world of the Romantic poets and their protagonists, the joys and pain of love, beauty, despair and the sights and sounds of nature. Schumann’s Dichterliebe is one the greatest of all song collections. Here it’s paired with an extensive selection of Brahms’ eloquent and arrestingly beautiful songs. The rich, jazz infused repertoire takes us on an invigorating whistle-stop tour through the history of popular song, from giants of the Great American and British Songbooks to the music of today’s songwriters. Backed by a superb sevenpiece band she guides us though music from Cole Porter to Billy Strayhorn, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Van Morrison, Tim Rice and Sting, honouring artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson and Peggy Lee. She’ll also include a selection of material from her new album Twelve O’Clock Tales. Paul Lewis piano Strictly Come Joking Barry Cryer funny man Colin Sell piano and funny man’s buddy Barry Cryer and Colin Sell – the Ant and Dec of the Sanatogen set – reunite to bring you a new show, devised by them after the visitors left…. Barry Cryer is one of the finest and most prolific writer-performers this country has produced. He’s lost none of his lust for life, palpable delight in punning wordplay and seemingly inexhaustible reserve of quicksilver quips. Armed with a finely attuned sense of the absurd and THAT infectious laugh he renews acquaintances with Colin Sell in an irrepressible double-act. Snape 7.30pm Tickets £23, £19, £15 Prom £6.50 Snape 7.30pm Tickets £23, £19, £15 Prom £6.50 Schubert Sonata for Piano in B major D575 20’ Brahms Four Ballades op.10 25’ Brahms Three Intermezzi op.117 20’ Liszt Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata 20’ One of the UK’s most celebrated pianists, Paul Lewis plays a programme that seems to encapsulate the essence of each composer present – Schubert’s melodic gifts, Brahms’ exquisite melancholy and Liszt’s florid invention. While Schubert’s buoyant sonata seems to weave its spell round songs without words, Brahms’ short works are compressed studies in harmony, colour and expression; he poignantly referred to the Intermezzi as ‘cradle-songs to my sorrows’. Liszt’s groundbreaking works – almost symphonic poems for the piano – ally taut musical logic with a fiendish virtuosity and vivid imagination. Inspired by the greatest soundtracks of them all, the BBC Big Band celebrate music written for the silver screen, performed with their own inimitable verve and flair. The evening includes classic themes from long-running and ever-popular James Bond and The Pink Panther, classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and recent hits Catch Me If You Can and Mission: Impossible. For sheer sensual appeal nothing can match the Argentinian tango. Tango Siempre’s dancers and seven-piece band of strings, piano and bandoneon brings it alive – sultry, atmospheric, full of rhythmic verve and softly mesmeric repetition. Incorporating four expert dancers steeped in the tango tradition, they weave a hypnotic spell in an evening where music and dance intertwine, from virtuoso displays of traditional tango dance to the exquisite sounds of 1930s Buenos Aires and the powerful Nuevo Tango music of Astor Piazzolla. ‘A Swingin’ Affair’ with Claire Martin and Ray Gelato Snape 7.30pm Tickets £25, £21, £16 Prom £6.50 ‘here is the tango, raw, intoxicating, speaking with its true voice’ Financial Times Snape 7.30pm Tickets £18, £15, £12 Prom £6.50 For those who like their music sassy, sharp and swinging with the Dave Newton Trio Friends for 30 years, multi-awardwinning vocalist Claire Martin and saxophonist and vocalist Ray Gelato have combined their love of swing for their first show together, exploring the classics such as Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off, When Your Lover Has Gone, Undecided, They All Laughed and They Can’t Take That Away from Me. Most well-known for her records with Muzsikás and for her contributions to the film The English Patient, Márta gives a rare UK recital alongside her contributions to a workshop on the Bartók String Quartets. With her trio of musicians on violin, bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy, she sings and performs the music as Bartók might have heard it. She reveals the extraordinary beauty and power of the pure tradition and shows that it’s sometimes hard to know where that tradition ends and Bartók begins. The Suffolk-based Lettering Arts Trust exists to promote excellence in the lettering arts throughout England, Scotland and Wales. In this new and delightful exhibition, leading artists from the Lettering Arts Trust’s register present a fantastic range of lettering – carved, etched and drawn – reflecting the wonderfully diverse nature of the Snape Proms. Concert Hall Gallery open 2pm until the end of each evening performance (closed Monday 15 August) ALDEBURGH YOUNG MUSICIANS When you book your tickets, you are offered the option of adding a donation towards Aldeburgh Young Musicians – but who are they? AYM is an inspirational scheme developing the skills of exceptional young musicians. We work hard to keep fees low and provide bursaries for those who need them; charitable support is vital to make this happen. AYM meets the challenges of our rural region by providing intensive residencies alongside a bespoke programme of professional support and mentoring, and the programme reflects the creative and innovative approach to music making that runs across all Aldeburgh Music’s work. As individuals and as a society we are all enriched by music – your support will help us to keep nurturing the world-class composers and performers of the future!
