Ekurhuleni is one of South Africa’s newer metropolitan cities, an amalgamation of historical towns and townships, strategically located in Gauteng, the business and industrial heartland of Africa, and home to O. R .Tambo International Airport, Africa’s busiest and biggest airport. This vibrant and exciting region is home to many interesting historical sites, wetlands, nature reserves and picturesque lakes and streams. The water run-off from the gold mines of the early days helped to create a unique and fertile wetland area where local flora and fauna thrive and where an impressive variety of birds can be seen. Outdoor sport is popular year round with a range of different activities ranging from water sports to adventure flights. We have many exciting attractions for visitors to explore and enjoy. If you fancy a flutter or a night out, our city has lots to offer, with two casinos offering entertainment, health and beauty spas and gaming par excellence. Explore the area with a tour around some of the historical sites, take in some shopping and enjoy a relaxing meal by the lake. If you have children with you there are hosts of places to visit to keep them busy. There’s plenty of accommodation in the area so you can take your pick of hospitable B&Bs, self-catering options or first-class hotels. The name Ekurhuleni, roughly translated from the Tsonga language, means ‘place of peace’ and we welcome you to enjoy our city. With lots to keep you entertained, we wish you a happy and memorable time in Ekurhuleni. 2 3 Africa’s Aerotropolis O.R. Tambo International Airport, the busiest and biggest airport in Africa, forms the centre of a multi-nodal, multi-functional enterprise with major commercial development in Ekurhuleni, South Africa’s Aerotropolis. An aerotropolis incorporates the exciting concept of building an economy around the airport. For the visitor this is an exciting venture as modern hotels, shopping centres, entertainment and exhibition centres all lie within very easy reach of the airport. USING THE GUIDE We’ve divided the guide into sections, with introductory write ups to give you a taste of what to expect and where to explore. The small towns of the former East Rand have grown together to form the large centres, which include the vibrant townships of Daveyton, Katlehong, Vosloorus and Wattville (to name just a few). DID YOU KNOW? Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron was born in Benoni. Princess Charlene of Monaco (known then as Charlene Wittstock) attended school in Benoni before going on to become an Olympic swimmer and marry her prince! There must be something in the water! ALBERTON Although the town cannot lay claim to any gold mines, many industries that supported the mining industry developed here and were responsible for the fast growth of the town. Among the many newer industries Alberton supports a massive brewery in the Alrode industrial area. Out of town an archaeological site at Meyersdal Koppie has yielded the remains of a late Iron Age stone walled settlement. The nearby Rietvlei farm zoo offers lots of activities for children. An unusual and fascinating museum at Doll’s Heaven is well worth a visit. The museum houses over 5000 dolls in the collection as well as other toys, cameras and crafts. church in the late afternoon as the sun is setting. None of the other windows show any such images, and no physical or chemical explanations have been found. DAVEYTON Known among the locals as ‘Vutha’, this was the first black township to receive access to electricity. The area is well known for producing many famous musicians and soccer players who have gone on to play in the Premier Soccer league. Daveyton is regarded widely as the place where ‘Kota’ or a quarter of bread with choice fillings originated, and where the best ‘Kota’ cuisine is made. ‘Kota’ is one of the township’s popular fast foods. WATTVILLE Wattville township situated South of Benoni was once home to the famous former ANC president Oliver Tambo and his wife Adelaide. The area of Tamboville was dedicated to their memory. Visit the grave site of O.R. Tambo in Mamkele Street. The area is also well known for the vibrant weekend and nightlife to be found on almost every corner! BENONI One of the highlights of a visit here must be to the O.R. Tambo Museum and the O.R. Tambo Narrative Centre in Wattville. Follow this up with a picnic at one of the lakes or delight the children with a visit to the Bunny Park. Famous visitors and Benonians are immortalised with their hand and footprints embedded in the concrete slabs of the Cranbourne Centre – Charlize Theron (actress), Montgomery Zwane (Mr Universe), Vic Toweel (South Africa’s first world-champion boxer) and Chris Barnard (heart transplant pioneer). St Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Woburn Avenue contains an icon resembling the crucifixion of Christ that appears on one of the north-eastern windows of the 22 23 BRAKPAN A gold and uranium mining town with a history – at one time it boasted the highest gold mine dump in the world – higher than the pyramids of Egypt! Today you will be royally entertained at the amazing casino known as the Carnival City Casino complex, and for the golf-lovers there are plenty of courses nearby. BOKSBURG This is one of the most important gold-producing towns in Gauteng and for the visitor it is also a shopper’s delight. It has one of the most popular and largest malls in Gauteng. For history lovers, there are numerous historical buildings one can explore. These include the Old Post Office built in 1898, the Law Court 1890, St Michael’s and All Angels’ Anglican Church designed by Sir Herbert Baker. GERMISTON The former City of Germiston officially received its name in 1904, being named after Germiston in Glasgow, the birthplace of John Jack (the gold mining magnate of Simmer & Jack fame). The world’s largest gold refinery, the Rand Refinery, handles twenty per cent of the Western world’s gold. The Victoria Lake Sailing and Rowing Club based at Germiston Lake are home to some of the best canoeists and rowing crews in the country. The lake is very popular at weekends for water-skiing and regattas and the Germiston Lake Park was re-opened in 2013 after it underwent a R20 million facelift. Dr Sydney Brenner, winner of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and the well-known golfer Ernie Els, hail from Germiston. On the more eerie side of things, the house where the infamous poisoner Daisy de Melker lived and murdered her husbands is also located in Germiston! Germiston Lake Outside the town is the beautiful Boksburg Lake, surrounded by lawns, trees and terraces. This is a popular boating, fishing, water sport and hiking destination for many. For fun family outings why not take a visit to the Bokkie Park. This beautiful area offers children fun farm experiences, such as milking cows and feeding the different fun-loving animals. Bokkie Park 24 25 BEDFORDVIEW The leafy suburb of Bedfordview is close to a number of interesting shopping experiences, from China Town at Bruma Lake to the epic Eastgate with its myriad of shops, entertainment venues and excellent restaurants. You probably have to be a local to know about Gillooly’s farm, set in the heart of Bedfordview. It’s virtually a farm in the middle of the city and the tranquil atmosphere is very popular amongst locals for picnics along the lake under the trees. NIGEL As with many of the outlying towns, Nigel began as a goldmining town in the late 1800s, named, not after anyone particularly famous but instead from a book a prospector happened to be reading at the time gold was discovered here. The book, by Sir Walter Scott, was entitled The Fortunes of Nigel. There are two important nature reserves near Nigel and not far away is the hiking area of Suikerbosrand, one of the largest nature reserves in Gauteng province. SPRINGS Think of the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, or the brightly coloured palaces of Miami’s South Beach... they are all iconic buildings from the age of jazz and burgeoning technology, renowned the world over as beautiful examples of Art Deco architecture. According to archival material Springs has some of the largest number of small-scale Art Deco design buildings in the world outside of Miami. TEMBISA This vibrant and dynamic township offers visitors a complete spectrum of township life, from humble township- style shebeens to upmarket pubs. Visit the area with a tour guide to experience and discover the adventurous night life and Sunday afternoon chill spots. THOKOZA This township played a strong part in South Africa’s struggle for freedom. Visit the Thokoza Memorial Wall, which pays tribute to the thousands of people who died during the fight for freedom. EDENVALE This area boasts a tranquillity that many enjoy when escaping the hustle and bustle of city life. There is the beautiful, undulating Linksfield Golf Club as well as many superb areas that offer a range of sporting and recreation facilities. KEMPTON PARK O.R.Tambo International is located within Kempton Park. Cool off at the ice rink at the popular Festival Mall or browse the fashion stores, take in a movie, visit a gaming and convention centre. Or take a drive and visit a museum of an ‘explosive’ kind at the nearby Modderfontein Dynamite Village. 26 27 TOUR OPERATORS The best way to get to know Ekurhuleni quickly is by hopping on a tour with an experienced guide.Tour operators will tailor-make a tour around you and take you where you want to go, while others offer standard day tours. its role in South Africa’s freedom struggle. Some of the fascinating heritage sites to explore include the O.R. Tambo Narrative Centre based in one of the best ‘green’ buildings in South Africa and the Thokoza Wall of Remembrance. Visitors can travel further back in time at the Meyersdal Koppie Nature Reserve and see examples of late Iron Age stone wall settlements. Historical memorials abound – commemorating events relating to the Voortrekkers (early European settlers), the South African War, World War II and the freedom struggle. Thokoza Wall of Remembrance Khumalo St, Thokoza The Thokoza Memorial Wall was built to commemorate the thousands of people who died during the fight for freedom. Among the many who were killed in bloody fighting just prior to the first historic democratic election was Ken Oosterbroek, the Chief Photographer of The Star newspaper. The famed Art Deco architecture of Ekurhuleni was built during the Deco heyday, but happily not destroyed by subsequent development as has happened elsewhere in the world. The buildings are most prominent in Springs, Germiston and Alberton, but bear in mind they’re not always perfectly maintained so a knowledgeable guide is advised. Thokoza boys Glass Art at The Crucible 50 51 O.R. Tambo Narrative Centre Leeupan, Benoni | 011 999 3327 One of the best eco buildings in South Africa, the O.R. Tambo Narrative Centre is well worth a visit. Important historical facts and material about the life of Oliver Tambo, and the impeccable contribution made by the Tambos in the struggle for South Africa’s liberation are being archived and stored here. This will form part of the first phase of a multi-million rand green project in honour of the late struggle stalwart. The O.R. Tambo Education and Narrative Centre is not just a dedication to the life’s work of one man, but is also about educating children and adults on caring for the environment while encouraging sustainable living and providing jobs right on the banks of the Leeupan Wetland. Drive to Wattville to visit the grave sites of the late Oliver and Adelaide Tambo. Aviation Museum of South Africa Dakota Crescent, Airport Business Park, Germiston 083 442 3771 | www.saamuseum.co.za If you consider yourself a high flyer the South African Aviation museum has a lot on offer, including a 1960 jumbo jet that was used by former president Nelson Mandela shortly after he was inaugurated. The museum is a dream for aviation enthusiasts. The South African Airways Museum Society shop is stocked with a variety of aviation related souvenirs. Based at the Transvaal Aviation Club at Rand Airport in Germiston, the museum has many historic items, including photographs, aircraft instruments, timetables and fascinating documentation and artefacts on display. The training of aircraft technicians and cabin crew takes place at the museum’s facilities. Maintenance procedures undertaken as training exercises assist the society with its preservation tasks, as well as being beneficial to students and apprentices who get an opportunity to work on ‘the real thing’. Aviation researchers can make use of the museum’s extensive library, which contains over a thousand aviation related books. Members of the public are welcome to visit the museum complex. There is an entrance fee. Guided tours are available for larger groups, especially school groups. Booking is essential. ‘Flyboys’, a restaurant at the museum complex, serves scrumptious food and refreshments. DID YOU KNOW?
