WE ARE ON OUR WAY
TO MEET OUR GOAL
The Friends of the Library are busy brainstorming
different ways to help pay for repairs to the
“community clock” which has been out of commission
for quite some time. The clock was given to the Portville community in loving memory of Evelyn Petruccelli in March 2003 by her family, friends and the Friends of the Library. Evelyn was the President of the
Friends, served as a trustee, and spent many hours volunteering her time at the
library.
You might have noticed the article printed in the Olean Times Herald or the Portville Panther asking for the community’s help in paying for repairs due to the library’s and Friends’ limited financial resources. Thanks to generous
benefactors, we are nearly one-half of the way to meeting our goal of
$3,000 and anticipate additional tax-deductible gifts.
The Friends voted to go ahead with the repairs at their September
meeting. Hopefully in the near future when you drive past the library our
community clock will show the correct time.
Election Day Bake Sale
November 3 10 a.m.— 5 p.m.
Let us provide even more motivation for you to get out and vote
on Tuesday, November 3: the Friends’ Election Day pie sale.
All kinds of scrumptious pies will be sold, even coconut and
pumpkin, thanks to the generosity of the Portville Lutherans,
who are letting us use their special window-front refrigerator for
those types that must be kept cold. Both whole pies and pieces
will be sold this year, as well as smaller sizes. At the same
time, Avon items and special candles will be shown for sale.

Monthly Meeting
T
he Portville Library Book Club continues to meet every third Monday of
the month, but now under rotating leadership. Over the summer, the
members decided to take turns choosing the books and guiding the discussions. The varied nature of the books can be seen in some of their recent
selections: The Book Thief by Zusak, The Thirteenth Tale by Setterfield,
and The Heretic’s Daughter by Kent. This lively group welcomes new members, who should come in ahead of time to pick up the selected book.
On Monday evening, October 19 at 6:30, the Friends are sponsoring a passthe-dish dinner for all members. Everyone enjoyed the similar dinner held in
January this year, and this is another opportunity to renew acquaintances and
meet new friends. We will provide your table service and beverages; you need
bring only yourself and a favorite dish to share. Afterwards, President Joe
DuShaw will preview coming activities for the Friends,
and we will also get an update from Charlene on the
Junior Friends. Put October 19 on your calendar and
join us for an evening of good food and fun.
It Pays to Read at the Portville Library
The children’s department has started a new reading incentive
here at the Portville Library. As the young patrons increase their
amount of reading, they will receive different prizes – each with
a money theme. When they reach their first goal they will receive an unreal
$100 pencil! The other prizes include a notepad and a bouncy ball. We are
trying to reassure these young people that the knowledge and enjoyment
they receive from reading will far surpass the prizes they receive, but sometimes it is just fun to be rewarded.
Story Time = Fun Time
Friday at 10 o’clock finds our children’s department full of life with children listening to books, playing indoor games and trying their hands at creating a variety of crafts. Before leaving, kids have the opportunity to select books and
check them out for a fantastic week of reading.
Our Creative Summer
The library experienced another successful Summer
Reading Program this past summer. The NY
State theme was “Be Creative @ the Library” and
we had a fun time planning and implementing that
theme. Our kickoff night was making and eating gross
food. The kids loved making “armpit fudge” and
“boogers on a stick”. Throughout the weeks we had
two guest speakers, made a fleece pillow, created puppets, and closed with water games. The Art Mobile
from Saint Bonaventure came for three weeks and
worked with a group of children on painting their own
masterpiece.
A total of 120 children were registered for this year’s program. We offered five
Monday evening special events, five story hour programs, three Art Mobile sessions, six visits from Portville Central’s summer school students, and our closing
program.
The young patrons were able to receive rewards for the different books they read.
The younger children had to read ten books to start earning their prizes. They read a
total of 2,853 books this summer. The older children kept track of the hours they
read, totaling 407 hours. Congratulations for a job well done.
Local food pantry in
need of our help!
The library is collecting spaghetti,
spaghetti sauce and canned fruit for
our local food pantry. The food pantry is located at the
First Presbyterian
Church and is open for
residents of the Portville School District.
Beth Marvin heads up of our children’s department as an
innovative full
time employee.
Ms. Marvin has
been organizing
our summer
reading program
and working
part-time for several years and is
already an old
hand at library
responsibilities.
Turkey Raffle
Spragues’ Turkey Farm once again is donating a fresh turkey to be raffled off by the
Friends to a lucky winner. You will find tickets for sale in the newsletter, and more
will be available at the library at the cost of one for a dollar or ten for five dollars. So
bring in your tickets between now and the drawing on Friday, November 20. Many thanks to
the Spragues for their continuing generosity.
Replacements
Tree Assembly/Trimming
Help is needed to set up two artificial
trees and decorate one on Monday evening November 30 at 6 pm.
It has also been brought to our attention that some of our ornaments are in
need of being replaced. Either a handmade or purchased ornament can be
brought to the library to help brighten
up our beautiful Christmas tree.
Our annual mitten tree will also be in
need of mittens, hats and scarves. Last
year nearly 300 items were distributed
to those in need through the local food
pantry and churches.
Three new Dell computers will be ready for
your use in the near future. The Online Opportunity Grant and matching funds from
the Library’s Board of Trustees have made
this all possible. Two will replace our original Gates computers and the third will be
set up for reference and photography use. A
printer and scanner will also be available
for public use.
The library provides basic computer classes
using Microsoft Word 2003 and surfing the
world wide web on Tuesday afternoons and
Thursdays evenings for five week sessions.
The classes are open to all our patrons at no
charge.
Thank you Friends of the Library
for our new sign!
The Friends of the Library along with donations made in
memory of George Boyer supplied the library with the funds
to make our beautiful sign possible. Memorials were given in
memory of George Boyer by: Melinda Miller, Bob and Barb Fairbanks, Russell
Downey, Janet Reynolds, Doris Childs, Dennis and Cathy Lynch, Rollie and Ruth
Bray, Charles and Jean Bretzin, Olean General Hospital Surgical Services Staff,
Randy and Judy McClain, Jack and Betty Rutterman, Southern Tier Anesthesiologists P. C., Richard and Charlene Waite, Jim and Carol Molyneaux, American Legion Post 770 Trumansburg, NY, Norm and Connie King, Ginny and Denny
Dorman, Tom and Ronda Pollock, Nelson and Priscilla Griffith, The Kayes Family, and Pauline and John Maxson.
