Thismonth,deciduoustreesarelosingtheirleavesandshrubshave
beenpruned.Thisgivesusachancetoseethestructureoftreesand
theirbranches.
1.DawnRedwoodMetasequoiaglyptostroboidesisoneofonly20
speciesofconifersthatlosetheirleaves.OthersareSwamp,Pondand
BaldCypressesandLarches.IncoldclimatesthefernyleavesofDawn
Redwoodschangecopper-redbeforedropping.Beingnotsocoldhere
inGeelong,thistreedropsbrownleaves,leavingthetallstraighttrunk
withshortthinbranches,thatweseethismonth.
2.ThelargeMaidenHairTreeGinkgobilobahasturnedyellowand
losesitsleavesduringJuly.The2smallertreeslosetheirleavesearlier.

3.CorkscrewHazelCorylusavellana'ContortedHazel'isashrubwith
amassoftwistedbranches.Itisagardencultivarthatwasdiscovered
inanEnglishhedgerowinthemid1800s.Althoughthisversionofthe
widelygrownCommonHazelnuthasbothmaleandfemaleflowers,it
bearsnonuts,somustbepropagatedbycuttingsorgrafting.
4.TwoCamellias,althoughnotdeciduous,showtheirstructureby

thewaytheyarepruned.Thisstyle,whichoriginatedinJapan,is
calledCloudPruningorNiwaki.ItisaJapanesemethodofpruning
gardentreesandshrubsthatmakesthemappearlikegiantbonsai.In
factNiwakimeansgardentree.Lookoutforotherexamplesoforiental
styleinthesegardens(pruning,sculpture,patternsrakedingravel).
