Alton L. Collins Retreat Center, Eagle creek, Oregon
Join other quilters for a time of relaxation and sharing at our quilting retreat in a remote
setting near Eagle Creek, Oregon. Pamper yourself with undisturbed sewing time in a
small group environment. This is your weekend to enjoy and get away from the phone,
kids, cooking. You can quilt until you drop, enjoy one of the many hiking trails or relax
while reading a book.
The retreat is a perfect time for beginner's to get help on projects from the more
experienced quilters. And a Mystery Quilt class is included in your retreat fee.
Cost is $390 for Thursday night through Sunday afternoon. Your cost may be different
if your arrival date and time is other than Thursday morning. Cost includes all meals.
Alton L. Collins Retreat Center
The Alton L. Collins Retreat Center is dedicated to offering a safe,
quality environment. The center is nestled in a Pacific northwestern
forest surrounded by majestic, moss-covered cedar, spruce, fir,
hemlock and big leaf maple. The natural environment supports ferns,
trillium, and salmonberry bushes covering the forest floor. This 68-acre facility provides
excellent accommodations in double occupancy rooms. Each room features its own bathroom.
Meals are included and served family or buffet style.
Their professional chef specializes in using fresh, local produce to create meals "from
scratch" that are truly culinary works of art and is happy to work with groups to make sure that
virtually every special dietary need can be accommodated
We sponsor retreats about every 6 months. The fall retreat will be at the same location November 3-6.
Festival of Stars 7-Block of the Month
Looking for your next project? You’re going to love the Festival of Stars
quilt by Pine Tree Country Quilts using Quilting Treasures Ombre Dots and
Ombre Scroll fabrics collections. Star quilt patterns are the quintessential
patchwork quilt designs. They are incredibly versatile and fairly easy to
piece, especially when you have Sharon to help you through the process.
The finished quilt size is 78” x 83-1/2”.
Bonus projects such as the Exploding Star 40”x40” quilt and the Rainbow
Runner are included.
Instructor: Sharon Rice
Fee: $26 per month
Date: 2nd Wed, 7-8pm, beginning April 13, continues May 11 and Jun 8.

Magic Squares Quilt
A ‘Magic Square’ is a mathematical puzzle in which squares in a grid are
numbered so that the total of any row or column equals the same number. This 3-D optical illusion quilt is made from units assembled in a similar fashion to create a random three dimensional effect. The quilt is much
easier to make than it appears; a nifty ‘cheater’ method makes piecing the
blocks a breeze. You may choose between a twin-sized or throw-sized
quilt for your project; or for a quick project, make a table runner. This
quilt is particularly lovely made in Batiks.
There is a LOT of cutting involved in making this quilt; students can opt
to pre-cut fabrics before coming to class to boost their in-class sewing
time if they wish. Pre-cutting instructions are included with the supply list.
Skill level is for a confidant beginner and up.
Instructor: Helene Knott
Fee: $ 45 plus Pattern
Date: Tue, March 29, 10am-5pm

applique and machine applique You will learn how to applique sharp points, smooth
curves, and perfect circles. Learn how to use overlays for perfect placement every time

Primitive Pathways Quilt
This project is a real scrap buster and employs a carefree piecing method
that requires very little precision. Fat eighths can also be used. There are
few perfect quarter inch seams involved. Because this quilt does not require
templates, it goes together very quickly making it a perfect choice for
charity or other utilitarian quilts. Though it is based on scraps, the quilt’s
charm is enhanced by the use of a bold graphic print such as a stripe for
setting off the scraps. Though the block itself is simple to make, some
arrangements may require intermediate skills; setting options will be
covered in class. Skill level is for a beginner.

Garden Patch Cats
They’re cute and they’re sassy; they’re Garden Patch Cats, a series designed by Helene Knott for Story Quilts. Don’t want to bother with hand
appliqué but don’t want an appliqueé as stiff as a board? This method is
easy but yields truly soft tactile appliqués without the bother of trying to
remove the centers of web appliqués. For your project, you can choose
any one of the patterns from the Garden Patch Cat or Bloomin’ Dog series (pattern purchase required). Skill level is for beginner and up.

Gordian Knot Wall Hanging
So, what happens when a gifted mathematician becomes a quilter extrodinaire? Why patterns for Gordian (never-ending) Knots, of course. In 1993,
Mary Whitehead, self-published a simple knot pattern booklet. The Gordian
Knot has no visible beginning or end and these ancient designs have been
translated into quilt patterns that are fascinating to put together. This Celtic
Knot pattern was inspired by Mary's Gordian Knot.
According to Greek legend, King Gordius of Phrygia was concerned by his
lack of an heir. He went to an Oracle for assistance and was told to fashion a
knot with no visible beginning or end. He was to use this knot on the yoke
attaching his steeds to his chariot. Whoever proved clever enough, the Oracle
stated, to undo this knot would then become his heir and the future master
of all Asia. Many tried and failed. One day a bright twenty-year-old, failing to
untie the knot, cut the cord with his sword. This young man went down in
history as Alexander the Great.

Applique & Fabric Arts Group
We do it all Applique, paper piecing, strip piecing, whatever
tickles our fancy. Our next session will be working on taking a
sweatshirt and making it into a jacket.
Anyone can join and there is no fee unless something is
bought for the group . Group members share techniques and
help each other with group projects or individual projects
someone brings in. Because we help each other, we aren’t
afraid to tackle a project we have no idea how to do. For
example, our last project was the paper-pieced Bali Wedding
Ring quilt . We all worked together to understand Judi N
pattern as they are written for engineers and have managed to
get our project to a place where we understand and that has
been through helping each other.
Members don't have to do the group project - they can do
whatever they want.
Tips and Tricks Corner
When you thread your needle for hand
sewing - whether it is piecing or quilting tie a knot in the end of the thread that is
closest to where you cut the thread off of
the spool.
Because thread is twisted as it is made, it
has a kind of "grain." Stitching with the
thread in the direction it comes off the
spool will keep it from tangling and
twisting as much when you are sewing.
