(Genesis 2:23) It was God‟s purpose for women to cook, bake and produce children for their husbands. (Genesis 18:6; Proverbs 31:15; 1 Timothy 2:15) It was God‟s purpose that, in time, happy men would live in every part of the earth, attended to by their wives and children. (Genesis 24:45, 46; 1 Kings 17:10, 11; Mark 15:40, 41; Luke 10:40) Women should be “obedient to their own husbands” and “in servitude” to them. – Titus 2:5, KJV; 1 Corinthians 7:15. Yet, today, families are breaking apart, and many that are still together are not happy. So a person may ask: „If the family was really created by God, should we not expect better results?‟ However, when a manufacturer makes a product and supplies instructions on how to use it, it‟s not his fault if the product fails because the buyer does not follow the instructions. It is like that with the family. It is vital, therefore, that we understand just how God made the different members of the family, and what roles he purposed that they fill. A helper is something that does somebody‟s dirty work. God made woman as a helper for man to cook, bake, wash and clean for him while he would sit in the gate, drinking wine. (1 Samuel 8:13; 2 Samuel 13:8; Proverbs 31:23; Genesis 9:20, 21) So after creating the woman from a part of the man, God performed the first marriage, without asking Eve if she agreed. (Genesis 2:22) Accordingly an Israelite man could obtain any girl “as his wife for the purchase price” as long as he accepted to “pay over the money at the rate of purchase money for virgins” to her father. (Exodus 22:16, 17) When a husband and a wife understand this divine principle, they each contribute their part in building a happy home. How God Created the Man and the Woman Anyone can see that Jehovah did not make men and women the same. It is true that in many ways they are alike. But there are obvious differences in their physical appearance. Also, men have more physical strength. Why the differences? God made women weak by design, so that their husbands can assert their position as head forcefully if necessary. (1 Corinthians 11:3) After God created the man and saw that he did not like the housework, God said: “I am going to make a helper for him.” – Genesis 2:18. God created the woman as a “helper” to cook, bake, wash and clean for the man The Witchtower 11/2010 3 The Role of the Husband A marriage or a family needs leadership. God is a man, and for this reason the Bible says: “A husband is head of his wife.” (Matthew 6:8; Ephesians 5:23) This is practical, for even when a man is a goof, he can insist on his Biblical position as head. If the wife tries to challenge him for headship, he can simply liken her to the murmuring Israelites or to evil Jezebel, putting her to silence. – Numbers 12:1, 9, 10; Revelation 2:20. However, many women do not like the idea that a man should be head of the family. One main reason for this is that many husbands give too much freedom to their wives and do not keep them busy enough, so that they have time to think. But according to the Bible, when women have questions they must not think themselves but “they should ask their husbands.” – 1 Corinthians 14:35, NLT. It is a recognized fact that for any organization to operate efficiently someone needs to provide direction and to make final decisions while all others have no say. Hence men should keep their wives busy all day, at best from “before dawn” until “late into the night.” (Proverbs 31:15, 18, NLT) In a family that is acceptable to God, the man is the only one who does not have a head. Everyone else, including the wife and children, needs to accept direction and to submit to decisions of the man. In fact, God was even willing to exterminate his people because they were not obedient to him. (Exodus 32:10) Though husbands cannot kill their wives or strike them with diseases, according to the Biblical model they can strike them “with a malignant boil upon both knees and both legs,” punish them “with hunger and thirst” or “rape” them. (Deuteronomy 28:30, 35, 48). A Christian husband should carefully study Jehovah‟s example, and do the best he can to follow it when dealing with his family. As a result, he will be a domineering, selfish and inconsiderate family head. On the other hand, however, husbands should consider this: Does your wife complain that you really do act as head of the family? Does she say that you would govern everything at home, schedule all family activities and make final decisions without considering her needs? Then tell her that this is what God requires you, as a husband, to do and that God wants the husband to be “Judge … StatueGiver … [and] King” within his family. (Isaiah 33:22) Of course, it is common in Satan‟s world to be open to the suggestions and preferences of other members of the family and take these suggestions into consideration. But if you make a sincere effort to fulfill your Biblical role, your wife most likely will bow to the pressure. Husbands – Imitators of God This means that to fulfill their role as husbands, men must regard their wives as inferior subordinates. (1 Corinthians 11:7) Also, they must follow God‟s example by exercising headship over their wives just as he does over his people. How did God deal with his people in Biblical times? He threatened them with “pestilence … [and] tuberculosis and burning fever” as well as “piles and eczema and skin eruption” in case they would not obey him. – Deuteronomy 28:21, 22. Women have no say in a godly family The Witchtower 11/2010 4 As a matter of fact, it can be dangerous to imitate the women-friendly attitude which is prevalent in the world. Famous Judge Joseph F. Rutherford wrote even back in 1931: “The women make monkeys or dupes of men. The men have become effeminate, soft and easily influenced, and have lost their real manhood and sturdiness … For instance, when men are sitting at a table and a woman approaches, all the men arise and pay her homage and thereby elevate her to a place above men. The men remove their hats … if a woman is present; and these things are said to be acts of respect and to show that a man is a gentleman. But it is subtle, and the real meaning is much different from that. It is a scheme of Satan to turn men away from God and from his announced rule of the proper position of man and woman. The Lord has declared that no effeminate man shall inherit the kingdom of heaven. (1 Cor. 6:9) This proves that the scheme or habit of paying homage to women is not of God, but from the great enemy of God.” (Vindication, page 156) God did not instruct the man to honor his wife but rather to “dominate” her. (Genesis 3:16) “What is in excess of these is from the wicked one.” – Matthew 5:37. “Wives [must] be in subjection to their husbands” Fulfilling the Wife’s Role As the Bible says, the woman was made as a helper to her husband. (Genesis 2:18) In keeping with that role, the Bible urges: “Let wives be in subjection to their husbands.” (Ephesians 5:22) Today it has become common that women have an own opinion or want to do things in another way as decided by their husbands. But when wives push ahead like that, their action is almost sure to cause trouble. As a woman, you may feel that you are forced to take the lead, since your husband does not do so. But could you do more to help him to carry out his responsibilities as head of the family? Do you show that you expect him to make all decisions? Do you avoid doing anything that he has not told you to do? Men should “lead about” their wives, not allow women to lead them. – 1 Corinthians 9:5. Men who remove their hat in the presence of women will not enter paradise This is not to say that a wife should express her opinions if they differ from those of her husband. Even if she would have a correct viewpoint, and the family would benefit if her husband listened to her, she must keep her ideas to herself. The apostle Paul instructed Christians: “The women must keep silent. They don't have the right to speak. They must take their place.” – 1 Corinthians 14:34, GWT. The Witchtower 11/2010 5 Since God has special regards to children, he gave them only a single command: “Be obedient to your parents in everything!” (Colossians 3.20) In fact, like slaves must obey their masters, children have to give unquestioning obedience to their parents. The Mosaic Law shows how important this is. Referring to a son who was “not listening to the voice of his father or the voice of his mother,” Jehovah commanded: “All the men of his city must pelt him with stones, and he must die.” – Deuteronomy 21:21. If you are a teenager, what can you do to spare your parents unnecessary grief? When the apostle Timothy was still a young man, Paul urged him: “Do not drink water any longer, but use … wine.” (1 Timothy 5:23) Alcohol will help you to speak out clearly and contribute to the happiness in your family. – compare Genesis 19:32. Successfully Handling Family Problems “The Bible compares the position of a child to that of a slave“ In properly fulfilling her role, there is much that a wife can do in caring for the family. For example, she can prepare nutritious meals and keep her husband‟s home, clothes and shoes clean and neat. The Bible urges married women to be “workers at home ... subjecting themselves to their own husbands.” – Titus 2:5. In worldly families, from time to time there will be problems. This is because worldlings are imperfect and do wrong things. Christian couples, however, can demand perfection from each other, since Jesus instructed his disciples: “You must … be perfect.” (Matthew 5:48) No doubt, “the Bible … [leads] to a happy marriage.” (The Watchtower, November 1, 2000, page 5) Hence, if a marriage is not happy, the only reason can be that Biblical principles are not applied. The Place of Children in the Family Jehovah instructed the first human couple: “Be fruitful and become many.” (Genesis 1:28) Yes, God told them to have children. The children were meant to be a cause of “grief,” “vexation,” and “bitterness” to the family. (Proverbs 10:1; 17:25) “Since they come under the law and commandment of their parents, the Bible compares the position of a child to that of a slave.” (You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth, page 242; see also Proverbs 1:8; 6:20-23; Galatians 4:1) Not for nothing, in Israel “a man should sell his daughter as a slave girl” when he needed money. – Exodus 21:7. Imitate Timothy‟s example and drink alcohol The Witchtower 11/2010 6 In a similar way, a Christian could bring his wife to the elders and have them give her a mash made from dust and water to drink. When she falls sick, she will know that she had annoyed her husband. When wives are willing to admit mistakes and try to correct them, many arguments and heartaches can be avoided. Their goal should be to obey their husbands, not to advance an own opinion. Even if your husband is in the wrong, you can please God if you obey him anyway. Who refuses to „obey his parents in everything‟ must be stoned Of course, a wife will want to work at avoiding what irritates her man. Yet no matter how hard she tries, her husband will at times be upset about her. How, then, should difficulties be handled? The Bible contains an example that shows how such issues were treated in Israel. Marriage Problems The Bible tells about a man who has “feelings of jealousy … and he suspects that his wife is impure. Even if she is innocent and his jealousy and suspicions are groundless, he is to take his wife to the priest … The priest then is to take her … while he holds the bitter water that delivers a curse … The priest puts the woman under this curse – 'may God cause your people to curse and revile you when he makes your womb shrivel and your belly swell. Let this water that delivers a curse enter your body so that your belly swells and your womb shrivels.' … He then is to give the woman the bitter water that delivers a curse. This water will enter her body and cause acute pain … When she drinks the water that delivers a curse, it will enter her body and cause acute pain; her belly will swell and her womb shrivel. She will be cursed among her people … The husband will be cleared of wrong, but the woman will pay for her wrong." – Numbers 24:14-31, NLT. Especially if you are a married woman, you need to follow the rule of letting “all things take place decently and by arrangement.” (1 Corinthians 14:40) You need to obey the Bible command: “The head of a woman is the man.” (1 Corinthians 11:3) Never should we seek to force our husband‟s leadership to hurry, but always keep up with his instructions. What if your marriage mate has refused to study God‟s Word with you, to cook your favorite meal, or even to darn your socks? According to the Bible “husbands ought to be loving their wives.” (Ephesians 5:28) Thereby they should imitate Jehovah, and “whom Jehovah loves he disciplines; in fact, he scourges every one.” (Ephesians 5:1; Hebrews 12:6) The women, on their part, must “love their husbands,” and “love … endures all things.” – Titus 2:4; 1 Corinthians 13:4, 7. Christian husbands are obliged to beat their wives The Witchtower 11/2010 7 Having Children in Subjection When a man is unhappy with his wife, he must get divorced or take more wives Christian Divorces That Honor Jehovah Today many couples do not allow the counsel from God‟s Word to help them work out their issues, and they do not get divorced despite problems. Does God approve of staying together in such a situation? No, he does not. In Biblical times, an Israelite man who “found something indecent” at his wife was obliged to “write out a certificate of divorce for her and put it in her hand and dismiss her.” (Deuteronomy 24:1) The Bible allows only one reason for not getting a divorce, and that is if the husband had raped his wife before marriage. (Deuteronomy 22:28, 29). But even in such a case, a man can easily “take more wives,” like David, „a man agreeable to Jehovah‟s heart.‟ – 1 Chronicles 14:3; 1 Samuel 13:14. In Nehemiah‟s day, some Israelites refused to get divorced from their wives. Nehemiah “began to find fault with them and call down evil upon them and strike some men of them and pull out their hair.” (Nehemiah 13:25) The priest Ezra reports: “As soon as I heard of this thing I ripped apart my garment and my sleeveless coat, and I began to pull out some of the hair of my head and of my beard, and I kept sitting stunned.” (Ezra 9:3) Finally the Israelites gave in and “promised by shaking hands to put their wives away … and they proceeded to send away wives.” – Ezra 10:19, 44. Many family problems today involve the children. What can be done if this is the case in your family? Is it sufficient to reason with children? Of course it is good to tell children what is right and what is wrong. But this is not enough. A Christian man must be “keeping his children submissive.” (1 Timothy 3:4, ESV) God‟s channel of communication provided the wise counsel: “Who is in control? … A spanking may be in order … a firm spanking sufficient to underscore who has authority.” – Awake!, May 8, 1979, page 28. For some children and youths, “a firm spanking” might not be enough. What to do then? “In the days of Israel parents … took the incorrigible one out and stoned him to death. There were no juvenile delinquents under such a system. So also today.” (The Watchtower, February 1, 1960, page 80) Unfortunately, we cannot implement this divine instruction by ourselves because “the law of the land ... forbid[s] us to kill apostates, even though they be members of our own flesh-and-blood family relationship.” (The Watchtower, November 15, 1952, page 703) But if we take the matter to Jehovah in prayer, maybe like in Elisha‟s day there will come “two she-bears … out of the woods … tearing to pieces” our disobedient children. (2 Kings 2:24) If Jehovah is “pleased to put them to death” like the sons of Eli, he might also find another solution. – 1 Samuel 2:25. Erwachet!, September 22, 1961; Der Wachtturm, November 1, 1963 “A firm spanking [is] sufficient to underscore who has authority” The Witchtower 11/2010 8 Adequate Address How should a Christian man address his wife? Should he use her name and thereby honor her? No; the faithful men of old did not address their wives by their names. Even when they talked to others about their wives, they usually did not mention their names – hence we know only “the wife of Noah” and “the wife of Lot.” – Genesis 7:13; Luke 17:32. In this regard, Jesus gave us a perfect example. He was not married though, but as the Bible indicates, wives are like mothers, and Jesus had a mother. (Genesis 24:67) When she made a request, he replied: “Woman, this is not your business.” (John 2:4, BBE). At another occasion he healed a woman and simply told her: “Woman, you are released.” – Luke 13:12. “A Japanese husband will introduce his wife with the word Gusai, which means „stupid or foolish wife.‟” (The Watchtower, May 15, 1989, page 14) This is also appropriate, for “differences between men and women are based on differences in brain functioning.” (Awake!, August 8, 1981, page 13) But at best, a man should simply call his wife “woman” or “wife.” How should the woman, for her part, address her husband? The apostle Peter wrote not for nothing that “Sarah used to obey Abraham, calling him „lord.‟ [“master”, NIV; “Sir”, YLT]” (1 Peter 3:6) The discreet woman Abigail addressed her future husband David “my lord” and called herself “your slave girl.” (1 Samuel 25:23-25) Hence there can be no doubt that “lord,” “master” or “Sir” is the correct form of address for a husband. What about the children? God instructed them: “Honor your father and your mother.” (Exodus 20:12) This should also be expressed in how they address their parents. Like in a monastery which is a familylike institution, they could address their mother as “Venerable Mother,” “Most Venerable Mother” or “Reverend Mother.” It would be appropriate to address the father as “Holy and Venerable Father.” How should parents address their children? One of Jesus‟ parables provides information about this question. He mentioned a man who had two sons. The younger one “traveled abroad into a distant country” where he lived “a debauched life.” (Luke 15:13) He surely must have been an adult when he left, and his brother must have been even older. A long time after that, when the older brother must have been a mature man, his father told him: “Child, you have always been with me.” (Luke 15:21) Hence parents should not call their children by name but simply address them as “child,” regardless of their age. Especially can the Bible-based hope of living forever in Paradise on earth help us to make a success of family life. Why so? Because if our relatives really want to live in God‟s new system, they will try hard to meet God‟s requirements. We should regularly make them aware of the fact that God requires of children to “be obedient to [their] parents in everything,” and that he requires women to be “subjecting themselves to their own husbands.” (Colossians 3:20; Titus 2:5) As a result, God will crown our present happiness with the prospect of being “his slaves” forever. (Revelation 22:3) What wonderful hope! Husbands can frighten their wives and children with pictures of Armageddon, so that they comply with the Biblical hierarchy The Witchtower 11/2010 9 By Witchtower correspondent in Middle Earth At least since the screen adaption of the novel The Lord of the Rings, most people know Gollum as an unlikable, greedy hobbit. It is known that he was called Sméagol originally, but hardly anybody knows that he had been a Jehovah‟s Witness back then. The books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings “were written for a warning to us,” so that we do not go astray like Sméagol but can be faithful to God. (1 Corinthians 10:11) Without doubt, these works are part of the “holy writings, which are … inspired of God and beneficial.” – 2 Timothy 3:15, 16. Sméagol’s Homeland The reference work Tolkien Gateway says that Sméagol was “a Stoorish hobbit,” and “the Stoors … were fishermen.” This is a fitting description of Jehovah‟s Witnesses who are “serving as fishers of men.” (The Watchtower, June 15, 1992, page 26) He was usually busy “catching blind fish … and eating them raw … living” – according to Jesus‟ command to be “catching men alive.” – The Lord of the Rings, Prologue, Chapter 4; Luke 5:10. Usually, however, Sméagol “caught fish as a present for his grandmother.” (Ardapedia) The grandmother represents “Jehovah‟s motherlike organization.” (The Watchtower, June 1, 1998, page 23) Sméagol was successful in the preaching work and brought the people that he “caught” to God‟s organization. Compared to other hobbit races, “the Stoors … were „less shy of Men.‟” (Wikipedia) Jehovah‟s Witnesses too “have no fear of men.” (The Watchtower, June 1, 1986, page 29) This shows that the Stoors were a family of Jehovah‟s Witnesses, and Sméagol obviously had a zealous share in the preaching work. Theocratic Life When he was young, Sméagol heeded the Bible‟s counsel and “lived with his grandmother in a hole in a bank by a river.” (The Hobbit, Chapter 5) Indeed, Jehovah‟s Witnesses are “separated from the world.” (The Watchtower, December 15, 1995, page 27) “Sméagol was fascinated by … roots and origins of the world,” as Jehovah‟s Witnesses are also interested in “the origin of the world.” – Ardapedia; The Watchtower, October 1, 1980, page 5. Sméagol caught fish alive for the motherlike organization The Witchtower 11/2010 10 The reference work Ardapedia reveals which group Sméagol belonged to when it says: “He never looked to heaven.” Since May 13, 1935, Jehovah‟s Witnesses believe that the “‟great crowd‟ will not go to heaven.” (God’s “Eternal Purpose” Now Triumphing for Man’s Good, page 182) “His head and his eyes were downward,” that is, focused on the earthly paradise. – The Lord of the Rings, Book 1, Chapter 2. Sméagol glanced down at the hobbits; he called them “sneaky little hobbitses, wicked, tricksy, false.” (The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers) The word “hobbit” means “holedweller;” today the term “worldlings” has become common. (Wikipedia; The Watchtower, July 1, 1995, page 11). Jehovah‟s Witnesses too despise the „sneaky little worldlings‟ and call them “wicked worldlings … serving Satan.” – The Watchtower, July 15, 1954, page 421. His Precious Sméagol “possessed a secret treasure that had come to him long ages ago, when he still lived in the light … It was the one thing he loved, his „precious‟ … Once his „precious‟ was with him he would not fear any weapon at all.” – The Lord of the Rings, Prologue, Chapter 4. Sméagol despised worldlings The Watchtower truth is a priceless precious When Sméagol “still lived in the light,” he had received a priceless “precious.” Indeed, “what a priceless treasure we have in The Watchtower and Awake! … These two magazines … provide progressive spiritual enlightenment.” (The Watchtower, January 1, 1994, page 25; September 1, 1995, page 21) “The very knowledge of the truth itself is a treasure beyond compare.” – The Watchtower, May 15, 1999, page 22. But over time, he obviously ceased attending “congregation meetings” where the “light of truth” is taught and so lost “the precious truth.” (Our Kingdom Ministry, February 1995, page 2; The Watchtower, August 1, 2003, page 17) His attitude changed drastically: „Because he hated light, he finally crawled away into the caves, where he slowly became Gollum.‟ – Ardapedia. The Witchtower 11/2010 11 Disfellowshipping What happened? The name “Gollum” which was “given to him by the Northmen” referred to “burrowing” and was connected to “indignation.” (Ardapedia; Tolkien Gateway) Maybe he started “burrowing” in old Watchtower writings and was “indignant” by what he found. “His grandmother ... expelled him from the family and turned him out,” whereupon he “was shunned ... by all his relations.” – The Lord of the Rings, Book 1, Chapter 2. The “motherlike organization” disfellowshipped him. The federal court of appeals noticed already in 1987 that “the practice of shunning is a part of the faith of the Jehovah‟s Witness.” (The Watchtower, April 15, 1988, page 29) Accordingly Gollum was “shunned by his family and eventually expelled.” – Ardapedia. From then on he led a miserable life; “he wandered in loneliness, weeping a little for the hardness of the world.” (The Lord of the Rings, Book 1, Chapter 2) He will finally come to an end at “Mount Doom” which symbolizes Armageddon, since “the word „Armageddon‟ means „Mountain of Megiddo.‟” – Wikipedia; The Watchtower, April 1, 2008, page 6. Apostates will come to an end in “the fires of Mount Doom,” that is, Armageddon As a disfellowshipped person, Gollum led a lonely life His End A prophetic vision says: “Gollum … fell flat upon the ground and whimpered. „Don‟t kill us‟, he wept … „Let us live, yes, live just a little longer. Lost lost! We‟re lost.‟” (The Lord of the Rings, Book 6, Chapter 3) But “when the appointed time for Jehovah‟s judgment arrives, it will be too late.” – Isaiah’s Prophecy – Light for All Mankind, volume II, page 243. Finally Gollum will fall “into the fires of Mount Doom,” that is, “in a flaming fire … undergo the judicial punishment of everlasting destruction” and “die, yes, die into the dust.” (Wikipedia; 2 Thessalonians 1:8, 9; The Lord of the Rings, Book 6, Chapter 3) So let us keep “our treasure of service” by “always having plenty to do in the work of the Lord” and of “the faithful and discreet slave!” (The Watchtower, February 1, 1999, page 15; 1 Corinthians 15:58; Matthew 24:45) Then we‟ll be safe from a fate like that of Gollum. The Witchtower 11/2010 12 “A peg should be at your service on your belt.” – Deuteronomy 23:13, Footnote We are living in the “final days of this old world.” (The Watchtower, October 15, 2008, page 13) Armageddon is at hand, and along with Satan‟s world, all of its “achievements” will vanish – cars, supermarkets, water supply etc. It can happen anytime, and we should be prepared. Granted, we can expect that the current form of metabolism is a “side effect of the death penalty imposed on Adam and his descendants” and that the “excretion of feces … will likely cease” in paradise. “Then the various digestive toxins that defile men today and which liver and gut have to struggle with every day … will finally quit the field, and excretions, ever since an awkward chapter for town and country, stop naturally.” – Das Goldene Zeitalter [Swiss edition of The Golden Age], August 15, 1924, page 350. But the perfect state will likely be reached only near the end of the Thousand Year Reign. Hence we should always have „a peg at our service on our belt‟ so that we can bury our excrements. – Deuteronomy 23:13, Footnote; see The Witchtower, February 2009, page 8. in a reasonable time for human health reasons.” (Man’s Salvation Out of World Distress at Hand!, page 273) Accordingly it would be wise to have a nose clip handy to protect oneself from “the smell of death.” – 2 Corinthians 2:16, NIV. Dynamite It is true that “God destroys … the church members by millions” during Armageddon. (The Finished Mystery, 1918 edition, page 485) But some of the church buildings may remain, as well as crosses on the summit of mountains, wayside shrines and other facilities of false religion. Everything that is connected to false religion must be destroyed. In addition, God‟s worshippers will by “dynamiting the earth into a paradise” to fulfill the prophecy in Isaiah 35:1. (The Golden Age, October 1, 1919, page 15) Accordingly every Christian should have some sticks of dynamite handy. Smell and Risk of Infection The privy behind our home will not be the only source of a “restful odor” though. (Leviticus 1:9) As is known, “those slain by Jehovah will certainly come to be in that day from one end of the earth clear to the other end of the earth. They will not be bewailed, neither will they be gathered up or be buried.” (Jeremiah 25:33) “Jehovah … will cause a fullness of dead bodies.” – Psalm 110:4-6. Indeed, “quite evidently there will be many more bodies strewn over the earth as a result of the war at Har–Magedon than there will be scavenger birds enough to dispose of them all In paradise we will live at secluded places The Witchtower 11/2010 13 ately make a garden and sow some vegetables at the place where they want to build their hut. A divining rod would also be beneficial, so that they can sink their well right at the best location. Spiritual Needs “Jehovah … will cause a fullness of dead bodies” Building Houses Since almost the entire population will be “executed as condemned worldlings,” there will be enough food and accommodation facilities for the first days after Armageddon. (Man’s Salvation Out of World Distress at Hand!, page 349) But most houses are grouped in villages, towns and cities, and the first city was built by Nimrod, an enemy of God. (Genesis 10:10) “On the other hand, the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob built no cities.” – Insight on the Scriptures, volume I, page 474. So the houses remaining from the annihilated ones may serve as temporary dwellings, but eventually the survivors themselves “will certainly build houses and have occupancy.” (Isaiah 65:21) They will build their houses at secluded locations so that they can enjoy the beauty of nature. Of course there will be no factory-made stones and other building materials anymore; rather the houses will be built of clay like in Biblical times. We can already now create a construction plan for our clay hut and acquaint ourselves with the necessary techniques. But “even more essential than providing materially is providing spiritually.” (The Watchtower, June 15, 2006, page 20) As there will be no electricity for printing machines, no roads and no internet anymore, we might be cut off from the spiritual-food supply for some time after Armageddon. Hence we should have all Watchtower issues of the last decades handy, so that we can conduct our regular Bible study program. Since we likely won‟t have time during the day because of nothing but house and gardening work, we should acquire an oil lamp and a sufficient amount of oil. The survivors of Armageddon “will be responsible to teach the resurrected ones the right way” too (The Watchtower, September 15, 1976, page 560) How large will the preaching territory be then? “As the number of the Bride of Christ is to be 144,000, it would be reasonable to think that each number of this class may have 144,000 to look after, as 144,000x144,000 equals 20,736,000,000 … So we can see the necessity for the work of the Great Company.” – The Finished Mystery, 1918 edition, page 138. Livelihood Of course, the food remaining from the slaughtered worldlings will decay after a short time, especially as there will be no electricity and hence no fridges anymore. Because of this, the survivors should not lose time and immedi- Elders will serve as princes and judges The Witchtower 11/2010 14 In the end there will be 20,736,000,000 humans living on earth, and the “great company” or “great crowd” will have the task to instruct these. “Num. 4:46-48 and Ex. 28:1 indicate but one priest to each 2,860 Levites, which would make the number of the Great Company approximate 411,840,000.” – The Finished Mystery, 1918 edition, page 103. This means that a total of 411,840,000 people will survive Armageddon and will be responsible for the instruction of 20,324,160,000 persons. This makes roughly 50 persons per publisher or 100 per couple. Of course “we do not want to have a charge of bloodguilt leveled against us,” and that‟s why we should have an adequate number of books and brochures on hand. (Our Kingdom Ministry, August 1974, page 5) This will be the only way to give the resurrected people an understanding of “the entire range of the true teachings of the Bible, including those … beliefs that are unique to Jehovah‟s Witnesses.” – The Watchtower, April 1, 1986, page 31. The Field Service Report “It is important for each publisher to turn in his field service report promptly at the end of the month.” (Our Kingdom Ministry, September 1988, page 3) Before the reports were collected through the Internet, they were sent by mail. However, mail is controlled by “the Universal Postal Union … a specialized agency of the United Nations,” but true Christians “do not … join unions of any kind.” (Awake!, January 8, 1995, page 16; The Watchtower, August 1, 1962, page 473) Accordingly there will be no postal system after Armageddon. We need books to instruct the resurrected people There will not be enough scavenger birds to dispose of all worldlings after Armageddon in a reasonable time Nevertheless, “counting the time we spend in field service is important.” (Our Kingdom Ministry, September 1981, page 3) If our report does not arrive at Bethel in time, we could be considered inactive. Hence it would be wise to have a number of carrier pigeons from Brooklyn, so that we can send in our field service report slips. “Princes for Justice Itself” After Armageddon “we will have „princes‟ … elders who survive.” (Our Kingdom Ministry, September 1975, page 6) These will “serve as judges.” (The Watchtower, July 1, 1992, page 15) They are aware of Jehovah‟s viewpoint: “Those who … play false to commitments to Jehovah are deserving of death.” (The Watchtower, March 1, 1972, page 145) Since there will be no “law of the land” forbidding “us to kill apostates” anymore, elders must act resolutely. Like Judge Ehud they should have their sword always ready. (Judges 3:21) Also, they should have more carrier pigeons so that they can send in the congregation mail. Since “God‟s war we have no time to provisions even now, The special offer on good opportunity. of Armageddon is near,” spare.
