Welcome! We are once again pleased to serve as premier
sponsor of the Pittsburgh CLO’s PNC Spotlight Series.
The CLO is a Pittsburgh treasure, consistently providing our
region with exceptional entertainment. And this season is no
different with all-new productions of timeless classics and
modern masterpieces that are sure to thrill and delight.
The PNC Spotlight Series performances and other presentations
by the CLO serve as integral elements of Pittsburgh’s thriving
Cultural District, which attracts thousands of visitors each
year and helps to define Pittsburgh as the most livable place
in America. That is why PNC has established such a long and
rewarding relationship with the Civic Light Opera, and it’s why
we’re pleased to continue that relationship for another season.

Welcome to a musical that holds a special place in my heart because it was one of the first I
produced and directed in Texas twenty-one years ago, and one of the first I produced after joining
Pittsburgh CLO in 1997. We’ve been trying to find a time to revive it for you in the years since,
but with the “other Phantom musical” so prominent in the marketplace, we had to be patient.
Here we are, fifteen years later! I am delighted that a member of my Texas cast is with us starring
as the Phantom’s father, Gérard Carrière.
As history repeating itself goes, the curious case of “the Phantoms” is one for the books. Kopit
& Yeston’s Phantom (music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, book by Arthur Kopit, based on Gaston
Leroux’s 1910 novel “Le Fantôme de l’Opéra”) was written before, but produced after, the 1986
Andrew Lloyd Webber treatment of the same subject based on the same book. In a tale of how
the Great White Way was won, ALW’s version beat Kopit & Yeston’s to market, debuting first in
London’s West End and soon after on Broadway. The rest was - well, what is now the longestrunning show in Broadway history, prompting Maury Yeston to declare his own version “the
greatest hit never to be produced on Broadway.” Kopit & Yeston’s Phantom has nonetheless
enjoyed more than 1,000 independent productions; many theater lovers prefer it to its
“showier” rival.
On behalf of everyone in our organization who works hard each year to create a Summer Series
with something for the whole family, we are grateful that you are here and hope you will join us
for Disney’s The Little Mermaid (July 9-21), just right for the youngsters, and Buddy – The Buddy
Holly Story (July 30-August 4), for all lovers of rock and roll. And, for those desirous of a romantic
night out to the tune of tinkling wine glasses, at the CLO Cabaret we give you Side By Side By
Sondheim, a revue of Stephen Sondheim’s lesser-known songs that debuted on Broadway thirty-six
years ago and is here in Pittsburgh for the first time. (Some things are worth the wait.)

PAUL PALMER (Minister of Culture) appears in his

Should I Have My Veins Evaluated?
Q & A WITH A VEIN SPECIALIST: While finishing charts at the
end of my day, I took a few moments to listen to my staff answer
questions for a patient on the phone. The questions asked were very
important as were the answers that were given. Here are some
examples:
What is Phlebology?
Phlebology is the branch of medicine that deals with veins and the
disease of veins. Two organizations dedicated to the advancement of
this field are The American College of Phlebology and the American
Venous Forum.
Why should I see a board- certified phlebologist to evaluate
my varicose veins
When it comes to any aspect of your health care, it is important to
be proactive in the choice and research of who will become medically
responsible for your evaluation and treatment. Though venous
disease is not always a visible ailment, it can be a serious health
problem leading to more serious issues, so choosing a specialist, or
board certified phlebologist for your venous care is a wise decision.
Board certification in phlebology identifies a physician who has
taken the extra step of becoming specialized in the treatment of
venous disease. Not only is the physician often a member of
organizations such as the American College of Phlebology (ACP) and
the American Venous Forum (AVF) but they have met additional
requirements set by the certifying board. After meeting these
requirements, he or she must then pass a certifying exam allowing the
physician to identify him or herself as board-certified.
Is membership the same as board certification?
This question is particularly important as it defines the specialty of
a phlebologist. While a physician may be a member of many different
organizations, these organizations only require an interest in the field
for joining. Thus membership is unlike board certification where
qualification is determined through training and testing. Here’s how
the ACP defines its board certification: “The establishment of a Board
Certification Exam brings recognition to both the field of phlebology
and those providers in the field who have the knowledge, skills and
experience to provide quality care to phlebology patients.”
I had a free screening at a
health fair and was told that
I don't have venous disease,
but I still have aching, pain
and discoloration at the
ankles. What should I do?
While free screenings can be
informative, remember that this is
just a brief glance into a patient's
venous system. A complete venous
exam and venous mapping by a
board-certified phlebologist is best
to determine if a patient has venous
disease.
Since a proper venous ultrasound
is such an integral part of this
evaluation, the American College of
Phlebology has set requirements for it
that include the following:
• A venous ultrasound should be ordered by a
physician.
• A lower extremity ultrasound should study the entire leg, from ankle
to groin. Failure to identify and treat all sources of reflux may result
in outright treatment failure.
• Evaluation of the venous system should be performed with the patient
in the upright position. Sitting or lying down are inappropriate for
the detection of reflux or the measurement of vein diameters.
• A venous ultrasound should be performed by a trained physician or a
registered vascular ultrasound technician (RVT) and then
interpreted by a physician.
If I have had an evaluation elsewhere, can I still be evaluated
in your office?
Of course. A free evaluation is commonly ‘ free’ because patients
are often not meeting with a physician, a physician assistant or a nurse
practitioner, so this visit cannot be billed to insurance. However, most
insurances allow for a second opinion. If you have any questions
about the second opinion being covered, contact member services on
the back of your insurance card.

ALICIA REECE (Production Stage Manager) A
Pittsburgh CLO Assistant Stage Manager for
the past two seasons, “Lish” is honored to
now lead the SM team. In the “off-seasons,”
she is the Stage Manager for the Pittsburgh
Ballet Theatre. Originally from Illinois, and
having worked extensively in regional theatre,
Off-Broadway, and international touring, she
is proud to now call Pittsburgh home. Love to

SEAN WEST (Production Manager) is happy to
be returning to Pittsburgh CLO for his tenth
season as production manager. He just finished
the season with the Pittsburgh Opera as a
production carpenter, and the year as a theater
supervisor for Carnegie Mellon University. He is
glad to be back and looking forward to another
fun and exciting season.

TOM HELM (Music Director) happily returns
for his 18th Pittsburgh CLO season, having
conducted more than 60 productions. His other
adventures include conducting the Broadway
productions of the Brigadoon revival, Cats,
Me and My Girl, Les Misérables and Souvenir.
Tom was musical director of the first national
tour of Cats, Radio City’s 5-6-7-8 Dance!, and
television productions of Mornings at Seven
and Crazy For You. Tom supervised touring
productions of Me and My Girl, Dora the
Explorer, Diego Live, Rugrats and Madagascar.
He has also been music director of some 50
Paper Mill Playhouse productions, among other
regional and national theatres.
JOHN McLAIN (Lighting Designer) Credits:

many international productions. Coming to
Pittsburgh CLO in 1988 with The Wizard of Oz,

ARTHUR KOPIT (Book) is an American
playwright whose works have been enjoyed
by audiences for decades. His first Broadway
play, Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You in
the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad, premiered in
the early 1960s and won a Drama Desk Award.
Since then, Kopit has written the books for
Broadway productions including Indians,
Ghosts, End of the World and High Society.
He received three Tony Award® nominations
for his work on Nine, Wings and Indians. In
addition, the native New Yorker and Harvard
University alumnus has twice been a Pulitzer
Prize finalist.
MAURY YESTON (Music & Lyrics) is an awardwinning American lyricist and composer.
His original scores have been performed in
theatrical performances since the 1980s. He
is best known for his music in the Broadway
productions of Nine and Titanic, which won
Tony Awards® for Best Original Score and Best
Original Musical Score, respectively. Yeston’s
work also includes the music and lyrics for
Grand Hotel and The Royal Family. He is also

The Pittsburgh CLO Internship Program was established
in 1973 with generous financial support from the
Pittsburgh CLO Guild. A wide mix of university students
are selected each year to work for one of the most
reputable theater organizations in the country.
Pittsburgh CLO Interns are given the unique experience
of working directly with Pittsburgh CLO’s production and
administrative staff members These students aren’t
simply watching from the sidelines. They play an integral
role in almost every aspect of Pittsburgh CLO’s Summer 2013 Property Coordination Interns
Season, working in the heart of the action connecting
and networking with professionals in the musical theater industry while earning academic credit.
From Directing, Choreography and Stage Management to Public Relations, Special Events and more,
Pittsburgh CLO offers over 20 internship opportunities, including two internship positions dedicated
solely to the coordination of the Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater. This
spring internship is a chance for two enthusiastic students to plan, organize and manage this largescale event, providing them with priceless experience in event management, publicity and theatrical

PITTSBURGH CLO has been a driving
force behind the preservation, creation and
promotion of live musical theater since 1946.
As one of the largest regional musical theater
organizations in the country, it is fortunate
for the yearly support of nearly 200,000
audience members. In addition to producing

works and showcase emerging talent, and

college intern program, New Horizons, and inschool programs such as the Gallery of Heroes
and Creative Vision. Other ongoing initiatives

Award, and the acclaimed Gene Kelly Awards

The timeless love story behind The Phantom
of the Opera has inspired countless books,
movies, theatrical productions and much
more since 1908 when the Gaston Leroux
novel was first published. Since music is
such a pivotal element in the Phantom’s
story, it is no surprise that musical theater
has become its dominant realm.
Not only has Andrew Lloyd Webber’s
production become a sensational hit on
Broadway and throughout the world, this
version, affectionately known as “the OTHER
Phantom,” is also a sensational hit in its
own right and is performed at top regional
theaters across the country.
Many critics agree that the best of these
productions is Kopit and Yeston’s Phantom.
Arthur Kopit, an award—winning playwright,
and Maury Yeston, a composer and Yale
music professor, first collaborated on
the Broadway musical Nine in 1982. The
show went on to win several Tony Awards®,
including Best Musical of the Year and Best
Music and Lyrics for Yeston. For their next
project, they decided to adapt Leroux’s
“Phantom” for the stage. However, once
word of Webber’s adaptation hit New York,
financial backers were reluctant to support
Kopit and Yeston’s show despite their
proven talent, so the duo shelved the work
in 1985 and moved on with their
careers. Yeston wrote the

Kopit adapted his Phantom script into a
miniseries for NBC. After the success of
the miniseries, Houston’s Theatre Under
the Stars produced Kopit and Yeston’s
show to great acclaim. The show also had
impressive runs at Paper Mill Playhouse,
Chicago’s Candlelight Dinner Playhouse,
Boston’s North Shore Music Theatre and, of
course, Pittsburgh CLO in 1998.
Unlike other versions of Phantom, Kopit
and Yeston’s focuses more on characters
and story line than on special effects.
They give the Phantom a name, Erik, and a
deeper motivation for his initial attraction
to Christine – her voice greatly resembles
his mother’s voice. Also, Kopit and Yeston
explore the unique love that exists between
Christine and Erik in much more detail than
other shows. In this version, Erik’s father is
also disclosed, and the revelation of their
true relationship provides the show with
its most tender and moving moments. The
show has some light moments as well,
supplied mostly by La Carlotta, the selfproclaimed diva of the Paris Opera House,
who quickly becomes Christine’s biggest
rival and a constant annoyance to the
Phantom.
While all the Phantoms in musical theater
present a different take on the world’s most
famous masked man, Kopit and Yeston’s
version clearly portrays him in a more
sensitive and vulnerable way, embodying
the characteristics that help us see him for
what he really is…human.

cell phones, pagers, PDAs, and other digital devices
during the performance and notify your contacts of
the emergency number.
Elevator
Located off the Grand Lobby serving all levels of
the Center.
Fire Exits
Located at all levels and clearly marked. Use ONLY in
case of emergency.
Lost and Found
Call Benedum Center Lost and Found Line at

Refreshments
Bars are located on the Gallery and Promenade
Levels, as well as the Grand Lobby. Drinks may
be purchased prior to performances and during
intermission.
Rest Rooms
Lounges for Ladies and Gentlemen are located on the
Gallery, Promenade and Mezzanine Levels. Rest rooms
for persons with disabilities are located on the
Grand Lobby Level.
Smoking
Smoking is not permitted in the theater.

Limited to performers, staff and authorized visitors.

• Wheelchairs are available in the main floor lobby
for transition from entrance to seat location.
Notice should be given at time of ticket purchase if
wheelchair or disabled patron location is required.
• Rest rooms with accessible features are located in
the Grand Lobby.
• Guide dogs gladly accommodated. Please inquire
at the Box Office when buying tickets.
• Elevator in Grand Lobby serves all levels of
the Center.
• Infrared hearing devices are available in the
Guest Service Center.
The Box Office at Theater Square
Purchase tickets to all Cultural District performances,
regardless of venue or presenting organization at
the Box Office at Theater Square. Monday through
Saturday, 9am to 9pm; Sunday, Noon to 6pm.

Benedum Center Box Office will be open only on
performance days, two hours before curtain time
through intermission.
Information and Ticket Charge Number
MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express are
accepted. TicketCharge operates Monday through
Friday, 9am to 6pm; and Saturday and Sunday 12pm
to 4pm. Orders received one week in advance will
be held for pick-up at the Box Office. The Benedum
Center Box Office assesses a $2.00 per ticket charge
for reissuing lost or forgotten tickets.

Children’s Policy
Regardless of age, all patrons must have a ticket.
Children under the age of 3 years will not be admitted
to the Benedum Center, Byham Theater or Cabaret
at Theater Square. All children must be seated with
an adult. Any person disrupting a performance or
inhibiting the enjoyment of an event for patrons may
be removed from the theater without refund.
Make the Most of this Performance
When you attend Pittsburgh CLO performances, please
be sure to have sufficient time for travel, parking and
construction delays. Latecomers and anyone leaving
the theater during the performance will be held in the
lobby until a suitable break in the program. Parents,
please be considerate of the performers, as well as
your fellow audience members. Kindly remove restless
children from the theater. Your attentiveness to these
concerns is greatly appreciated and will enhance
everyone’s enjoyment of Pittsburgh CLO performances.
