I am a marketing consultant for RE605 and Black
Hills Builder magazines in the Black Hills. I have
a vast background in sales and marketing and
thoroughly enjoy helping my clients grow their
business. I am extremely passionate about the
building and real estate industry, therefore, I can
bring my expertise to the table.
I am a South Dakota native graduating from
Stevens High School in Rapid City and went
on to attend the University of South Dakota in
Vermillion. My career in sales began eight years
ago and have loved the industry ever since. I have
worked in health care sales as well as television
and print advertising.
In my down time, you can find me spending time
with my amazing husband and three boys. I am
a fashionista at heart but can flip my switch to fit
in with my family of men! We enjoy ATVing in the
beautiful Hills, we also raise hunting labs. When
we aren't hitting the trails, we are playing with the
puppies, our boys are in their glory!
In my leisure time, I enjoy spending time with
friends and family, riding through the Hills on the
bike, camping, boating and any sort of summer
water sports.
Speaking of featured homes, we just broke ground on a spec home in The
Northern Lights. The proceeds from this home will toward capital improvements at

Hello, I'm a Marketing Consultant for our RE605
real estate publication and website. My job is to
help realtors expand their businesses by creating
unique and effective marketing plans for agents
all over the Black Hills. I enjoy getting to know
my clients through face-to-face interactions, from
coffee chats to charity events.
Born and raised a Rapid City girl, I moved to
Vermillion to attend the University of South Dakota
to get my Bachelor of Fine Arts: Graphic Design
and Bachelor of Science: Psychology. I started
at Michels in 2012 after graduating and haven't
looked back!
In my spare time, my husband and I hike, hunt,
fish, and kayak. I love nothing more than enjoying
the beauty of the Black Hills through a camera lens
or on the back of a horse.

Just outside of Custer, Jerry and Cynthia will soon be settling into their
new retirement home. After years of planning, Jerry and Cynthia can
spend their retirement watching fawns pounce and jump through the
meadow that makes up their backyard. After vacationing in the Black
Hills for many years, Jerry and Cynthia fell in love with the area and,
to be closer to family, moved to the Black Hills from Washington. “It felt
right,” Cynthia said. The couple really made the decision when they
came to a stop on Highway 385 one day. The two looked at each other
and said “Yeah, this is it.”

As you walk through the house, the flow
feels natural, the space inviting, the view
incredible. With two bedrooms on the 1,950
square feet main level, 330 square feet in the
loft, and two bedrooms in the 1,950 square
feet unfinished, daylight basement, Clay Studt
of Studt Construction has built a retirement
home that invokes rustic aspects and visual
cues, but refines the look by combining it with
a modern aesthetic. This refined rustic look
gives Black Hills living a beautifully crafted,
modern feel.
Walking up to the house, visitors will be
greeted by reclaimed barn wood made out
of rough-cut cedar that really completes
1 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 5
the board and batten look and feel of
the house. The barn wood siding might
strike you as familiar and, if it does, it’s
not surprising. This cedar siding is a
convincing duplication of the reclaimed
barn wood that can be found all around
the Black Hills, and one of the reasons is
because it can withstand the test of time.
Coming from the base of Mount Rainier,
Jerry and Cynthia not only fell in love with
the rustic look and feel of the homes in the
Black Hills, but they also wanted to bring
a little bit of their West Coast flavor to the
Midwest. The result is a gorgeous rustic
look combined with the modern feel of
sleek lines, a beautiful color palate, and
trim design seen in West Coast dwellings.
Continued on page 12
Continued from page 11
Highlighting the lines and accents of the home are
rough-sawn Douglas Fir Timber. Jerry and Cynthia were
instrumental in the color palette that fills the home and
the stained timber is no exception. Studt worked with
his finisher and the aged stain of the timber became
apparent after taking the other colors of the home into
consideration. Also important, was keeping the finish
of the wood flat. By doing so, Jerry and Cynthia were
able to keep the rustic look, without the glossy finish
that often times add too much of a modern finish.
The rough-sawn finish and stain of the wood certainly
accents this house with a rustic feel; another item to
note is that Jerry and Cynthia did not care for the look
of beam brackets so all the beams and the stair treads
were installing using mortise and tenon technique.
Jerry and Cynthia wanted to create a house that fit the
area where they lived. “We wanted a Dakota house,”
Cynthia says, “we wanted something that when we
looked outside, we could bring the outside in.” Cynthia
says, “we wanted something that when we looked
outside, we could bring the outside in.”

In addition to the rough-sawn timber,
moss rock actually acts as a façade for
the fireplace and the kitchen island. The
limestone has lichen growing on it. By
occasionally spritzing the rocks with water,
Jerry and Cynthia can keep the lichen on
the rock growing and preserve its beautiful
colors. The moss rock is just another small
touch that adds to the rustic feel of this
house, and the limestone definitely makes
the home feel like a “Dakota Home.” With
the rock being selected from within 20
miles of the home, it’s just another way
Jerry and Cynthia have brought a little
piece of the outside into their home.
The open floor plans flows into the kitchen
and the hickory cabinets differ from the
rough-sawn wood slightly enough to offer
a wonderful compliment to the rustic look.
Combining the custom, the modern, and
the rustic throughout the house is a board
that runs along the wall a few feet down
from the ceiling. Not quite trim, not quite
crown moulding, this board serves as a
rustic accent, but also acts as a way to
divide the paint line. It’s a touch not found
in many homes, but one that serves up a
unique character to this charming Dakota
home. The neutral tones compliment the
rustic aesthetic while lighter color toward
the top of the walls keeps the area from
becoming too dark.
Leading up to the loft, it’s hard to divert
your attention from the beautifully crafted
railings that lead up the staircase. These
custom iron railings with a unique twig
design were fabricated locally. Clay had
sent Jerry and Cynthia to the fabricators
showroom. “As soon as we walked through
the door, we said, ‘That’s it,’” Jerry recalled.
It started when Jerry had picked out the
light fixtures, which have a twig motif. That
aesthetic, he thought, would tie in nicely
with the railing. There’s a muted bronze
finish to the iron that subdues the harsher
gray tones and makes it less of a contrast,
and more of a compliment to the finish
of the wood, the color palette, and the
lighting of the home. With the wood floors,
wood ceiling, and so many other wood
accents, the trio decided that the iron
railings would stand out and not become
so visually absorbed into the house.
The 330 square foot loft is cozy, yet still feels
open. The non-obstructive characteristics
of the custom twig railing play an
1 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 5
important role in creating this feeling. The
loft stretches from the front of the house
to where the kitchen ends and the dining
and living rooms meet. The big window
at the front of the house and the series of
windows looking out through the living
room combined with the unique shape
of the loft and the non-obtrusive railing,
create an effect which is warm, cozy, and
welcoming, but far from cramped.
Views from the master bedroom and
guest bedroom look out into a beautiful
meadow. Sweeping views of the meadow,
valley, and hills can all be seen from the
private, master bedroom entrance to the
deck, which wraps all the way around
the back of the house to the dining room
entrance. The master bath is open and
luxurious with a completely separate,
privacy room for the stool enclosure. The
tiled floor and shower compliment the
rustic aesthetic while keeping the look and
feeling completely unique and clean.
The deck is made from cedar and is
weathering right now in order to match
the rustic look of the home. While the
decking wraps around the home, eyes
are drawn to the two-tone color of the
wood on the house. With a natural finish
on the soffits above the deck and a darker
stain color for the siding, the two-tone effect
creates the feeling of a higher ceiling.
Accenting the exterior of the living room
portion of the home, the board and batten
design switches to shakes on the gable
ends. Perhaps one of the greater details
that goes unnoticed with the exterior is the
reclaimed look. The wood is actually taken
through a process in which a wire brush
strips away parts of the softer wood. The
wood is then sent to a finisher, who applies
a “living finish” to the wood. This means that
the wood will change depending on sun
and weather exposure.
One of the most interesting aspects of the
home is one that many miss when they
walk in and only see it as they’re leaving.
It’s a piece of etched glass that was
taken from the front door of Jerry’s great
grandparents’ house. Jerry suspects the
house was built in the early 1900’s. To have
a piece of glass survive as long as it has is
incredible in and of itself. What’s equally
impressive though, is the amount of detail
etched into the glass. Jerry and Cynthia
brought the window to Clay and told him

that they wanted a window custom cut to
fit that specific piece of glass. The process
involved cutting the window to fit the piece
of glass with an equal margin around
the edges to make it look like the glass
is actually the window. However, a piece
of thermal glass is placed on the exterior
side of the etched glass for protection and
energy efficiency.
Jerry had been working on the drafting
plans for the house over the last few
years. Clay feels that’s part of the reason
building this refined rustic beauty was
as smooth as it was. Building the home
took approximately one year, and Jerry
and Cynthia moved in soon after. Come
November, Jerry will retire and he and
Cynthia can enjoy their retirement from
the refined rustic beauty of their new Black
Hills home.

engaging window displays,
each one slows their busy
pace to stop and gaze at the
artistic showcase before them. For
a moment, their eyes light up. A few
passersby decide they must know more, so
they take the plunge – opening the doors to walk inside
the century old building.
After stepping through the welcoming doors you will quickly discover there’s more to
the business than meets the eye. “We have so many different interior design options
here that people don’t know about. We love welcoming new faces to the shop to

With their eye-catching window displays, one can assume Jennifer and her team offer
interior design services. Their expert design service include: custom window coverings,
upholstered furniture, choosing paint colors, furniture arrangement, planning initial
layouts and more. These design services are just one side of the business.

their most popular brands include Hunter

every budget. They can design everything
from a nifty pair of throw pillows to an
entire home interior. Pick one piece in a

“There are so many options in here – the
possibilities really are endless. We had
one client that completely trusted us to
redesign the main living area of his home
while he was away running the Boston
Marathon. He was absolutely thrilled with
all the changes and additions, and now
we’re moving on to other projects in his

The At Home Design owner is certainly
experienced in her field. Creative design
work is in Jennifer’s blood. Educated and
trained in England, Jennifer explains, “My
mother was an interior designer and my
father was an architect. I’ve traveled the
states and done design work all over for
twenty plus years while my husband was in
the Air Force. We finally ended up in Rapid
City, South Dakota.” At Home Design has
now been in business for the last eight
years and in its current location, downtown
at 410 5th Street, for the past two years.
Lucky for other Black Hills residents, the At
Home Design team travels an hour out of
Rapid with their services. If you are seeking

At Home Design team or drop by the shop
to share your design dreams. Jennifer and
her assistant Michael are there Monday

In addition to assisting its own clientele,
At Home Design opens its doors to other
established and aspiring designers. If
you’re looking to start or enhance your
own interior design business, At Home
Design can be your design center.
“You could have your own design

for an hour. The Clarksons were hard working men who were
known for their fairness and their willingness to help neighbors.
In fact, it was just those qualities that would help them create
what was to become Western South Dakota’s premier agricultural
and business bank. In 1913, they formalized their practice of
helping neighbors by establishing a bank in the prairie town of
Buffalo. In 1937, the brothers expanded and founded the Bank of
Belle Fourche.
From those humble beginnings Pioneer Bank & Trust grew
to become one of the safest banks in America. In 1956, they
expanded their service capabilities by establishing a full-service
Trust Department. Pioneer’s Trust Department offers complete trust
and estate planning, plus investments. The next branch opened in
a
Spearfish, then in Rapid City.

With the new regional presence it was time for a new, appropriate name, and
in 1986 Pioneer Bank & Trust was born! Many of their employees have spent
decades of their lives serving the bank, and for good reason.

“Our bank has been owned by the same family for 100 years. As employees of
the bank, that feeling of family extends on to us too. I’ve been with Pioneer for
18 years and I can’t imagine being any place else,” says Assistant Vice President
Bobbi Welch.
“We like to help educate our clients and walk them step-by-step through the
process to make it as painless as possible. Through that process, we often end
up having clients for life. Some of my clients have become my best friends,”
explains Bobbi.
Real Estate Loan Specialist, Nicole Clendening, agrees.
“I’ve also been with Pioneer for 13 years. We’re all about relationships – it’s not
just about buying a home. We want to be there for you throughout your whole
life, from homes, to cars, to retirement,” says Nicole.
If you are looking for a mortgage Pioneer Bank & Trust has many options to fit
your needs. Loans ranging from construction, to VA, FHA, Rural Development,
and more,
ore Pioneer Bank & Trust has the flexibility to meet almost all scenarios.

“We like working with first-time buyers.
We like working with contractors. We like
working with everything in between too,”
says Vice President Joanie Mantei.
Pioneer Bank & Trust is a one-stop shop for
all your banking needs. A big benefit of inhouse loans and having local underwriters
is efficiency.
