SEPTEMBER 2013 BMW MOA Charter #147 CCBR Web Site www.ccbr.org BMW RA Charter #203 SEPTEMBER MEETING POT LUCK The evening before the BASH, Sept 5, 2013 at 5 pm Beining camp site, Plumas-Sierra Fairgrounds, Quincy, CA For Details click HERE Many thanks to Rich Alves for organizing this meeting. page number 1 The President Says!! By Bob Kuykendall September has always been a transitional month for Central Cal. We have the Beemer BASH which marks our major event for the year and opportunities to see old friends and make new ones that you may not see until the next BASH in 2014. It is also the time we start to seek new candidates to serve on the Board of Directors for 2014. For some in other parts of the country it marks the end of their riding season - starting to think about putting the beast on the battery tender - but not here and not at Central Cal. We still have the rest of the year to ride to near and distant locations, have meals at new another restaurant (that may become a favorite) and tours to interesting venues, museums, tour locations, GS trails, etc. etc. We really do live in riding Nirvana. I hope that you will give some strong consideration to several items 1. Volunteer to lead a ride to your favorite lunch spot or twisty road this Fall or into 2014 2. Consider serving on the Board of Directors, run for office, public service is good 3. Or if not that, give the Board your thoughts how we can improve our operations and activities, 4. Recruit a new member to join the CCBR 5. Send something into our Exhaust Notes Editro. Take some photos from a recent trip. Do a short write up about a road trip, a rally, a European or New Zealand journey,or an off road dirt ride. We will all gain from each of these. Thank you for your consideration. And, yes, speaking of the 2013 BASH. It is only a week or two away when Ellen and I will take the BMW sidecar to ride up the Feather River Canyon Highway 70, truly one of our most favorite rides. We will be volunteering for the Beer Garden and other BASH activities. We hope that to see you there and have a cold one and a chance to catch up on what has happened since last September. Ellen likes to go fast up Feather River Canyon! page number 2 page number 3 HUGE CONTEST WITH $750 IN PRIZES Continues for One More Year! Listen up all you CCBR’ers. There’s mucho money to be made. We have a great contest going for members who submit the most half page or larger pieces for the 2013 Exhaust Notes. Stories? Captioned Photos? Yes…..anything goes. Now for the really great part. CCBR meeting in the Beer Garten Afternoon concert Mystery Rider (Phil James when he first gets up in the morning) A Scottish visitor (Actually, Phil James after he’s up and dressed for the day) page number 7 page number 8 THE SAGA OF WACKY Part 6 – Salem, Oregon By T J Forsyth After exhausting our search in Southern Oregon, Bev and I decided to drive over to Grants Pass and have a look see. On the way we stopped in Cave Junction to see if Wacky had sneaked in after we searched for him last week. Siiiigggghhh! No sign of Wacky. At Grants Pass we made a phone call to Medford to see if there was any suspicious activity there. With a negatory answer we decided to drive up highway 5 to see if there were any wayward chickens on the loose. We drove through and searched Canyonville, Riddle, Myrtle Creek, Roseburg. Shutherlin, and Cottage Grove. We fueled up in Cottage Grove (gas and coffee) then resumed our northward search. We hit Eugene, Springfield, Corvallis, Alban, and the Willamette Valley next. As we approached Salem, we decided to stop and get some rest. After checking into a hotel, we had heard about a hundred year old house and decided to search it. Having the plaster off made searching easier. We tried to get together a posse but they were too bushed. After a short night rest we went to Turner to enlist some help at a small ranch. page number 9 These fellas just looked at us like we were kooks If it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, it probably is a duck page number 10 “Should I call the guys with the white jackets?” I considered climbing Mt Shasta but my belt buckle can’t take the altitude This report is late getting out because I received an unmarked package in the mail. There was no return address or signature of the sender. Inside I found a note that stated “Instead of looking for Wacky, why not settle for a Quacky. After long thought and consideration I quickly came to the conclusion that someone was trying to bribe me! To be suspiciously continued page number 11 page number 12 AUGUST CCBR MEETING AT EMIL VILLAS IN LIVERMORE CCBR member and former flat track racer, Joe Finney, brought his friend Robert McDonnell to our August meeting. Robert continues to race and shared some of his experiences with us. He presently races a 650 cc Rotax single and a 500 cc Yahama with a custom frame designed by Dick Mann, a "Babe Ruth" in the motorcycle racing world. To right → Chief of Stuff, Rich Alves, looks fondly at his nutritionally balanced lunch consisting of fruits, vegetables, dairy, and stuff. He is convinced that Peach Cobbler with Ice Cream, “but hold the whipped cream because I’m watching my diet,” will please his personal trainer. Pic by E Kuykendall LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Esteemed Editor, I’m getting ready for BASH! Look for me. I’ll be wearing the official Autumn Beemer BASH hat shown on the right along with a special BMW watch once worn by the late Helen Paladini and given to my by her husband and fellow CCBR member, Vic.. Can't wait. Sincerely, Ellen Kuykendall page number 13 LETTERS continued Rich, Just wanted you to know how much I enjoyed the story of you and Phil wandering around my old back yard. I was born and raised in Auburn, and lived there until I left for Navy flight training. Our high school was the only one between Auburn and Reno. So the kids who lived in those out of the way places rode the school bus to Auburn. I worked my way through Sierra College, which was in Auburn in those days, driving a school bus for the high school and college. So I had a few interesting adventures maneuvering those roads. My father belonged to the Odd Fellows Lodge in Auburn. But there was a chapter in Iowa Hill. Every once in awhile he would attend a function up there. It was a long time before I figured out where in the hell it was. I still have a few friends who live in Foresthill and Georgetown. Your short account brought back a flood of great memories. Thanks, Charlie Anderson ********** Editor, We’ve supported the Northern California Ride for Kids for many years. It’s a fundraiser for a very worthwhile cause. It’s October 6, 2013 and we would appreciate it if you would mention it in the next Exhaust Notes. Please click HERE for information. Thanks, Dave and Nancy Smith ********** A card sent to CCBR: We were certainly surprised to receive the check in the mail. It is greatly appreciated and has been earmarked to help restore our bike to riding condition. We're really sorry to have to miss the ride to Salem, but are counting on seeing everyone at the Beemer Bash in September. Jim is already back to riding our RT. It will be several months before I can join him. Thanks again, Jim & Glenda Fiedler ~editor's note: Jim & Glenda went down in May as they were traveling home from CCBR's Spring Fling. The CCBR Board voted to utilize the CCBR Rider's Benefit Fund to assist with expenses. They also voiced their thanks at the August CCBR meeting. page number 14 CENTRAL CAL BMW RIDERS OFFICERS, BOARD MEMBERS and EXTRAORDINARY VOLUNTEERS President Bob Kuykendall (925) 570-9957 Vice-President Rich Alves (925) 240-6970 Secretary Rich Meissner (209) 578-1933 Treasurer Ellen Kuykendall (925) 300-3512 Director and Co-Webmaster Terry Tracy (415) 760-1070 Director for Meetings Jay MacDonald (209) 966-3895 Director for Membership Bob Kuykendall (925) 570-9957 Director for Rides Phil James (925) 372-8155 Director for the BASH Jon Beining (707) 763-3063 Chairman for the Spring Fling Kim Dromlewicz (925) 672-2112 Exhaust Notes Editor Rich Alves (925) 240-6970 Webmaster Rich Alves (925) 240-6970 IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU KEEP YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS CURRENT All of your membership information is filed under your email address on our web site.
