If getting to the library is getting in
your way of enjoying materials, it’s
time for you to discover GCPL’s Mobile
Services. With two Bookmobiles, a
Lobby Stop Vehicle and a Subaru
Outback, Mobile Services staff visits
about 3,500 people every month,
delivering everything from comics to
coffee-table books; from research
documents to video games; from
movies to music. People from all walks
of life benefit from this service, yet
many citizens do not realize its scope.
It’s not only the Amish who use the
Bookmobile. The Outreach fleet goes
wherever it’s needed. Stops include
WomenSafe, the YMCA, Chagrin Falls
Park, senior centers, nursing homes,
nursery schools, homebound stops
and many other communities and
residences.
Meet Joe Moriarty, 33, an avid
reader and library patron. Joe’s
plans of studying physical therapy
and working with soccer athletes
were derailed in 2004 when he was
in an ATV accident shortly after he
graduated from Chardon High School.
A severely bruised spinal cord left
him a quadriplegic. Despite being
wheelchair captive, his zest for life
makes him a natural inspiration to
others who may be facing their own
challenges. Joe earned a business
degree from Kent State University,
Geauga in 2012. Now, in addition to
researching business scenarios, he
looks up health, nutrition and fitness
information. He gets a lot of his
materials from GCPL thanks to the
Lobby Stop Vehicle that visits him at
his Harris House residence in Chardon.

“The library is great,” he says. “The
staff brings the books I order. They
make reading suggestions and
socialize with all the residents. What
I love the most is that the staff finds
things for me; I don’t have to look.
They’re very helpful. And, since I don’t
drive, I can’t get to the library for any
programming or to get materials. It’s
great that they come to us. If more
people knew what the library does, I’d
bet there would be more use.”

check things out, but the majority
would stay in the lunchroom. Now
that the staff carts materials into the
building, people see things and get
excited to check them out.”
It’s not just the collection that makes
these visits so popular. “It’s the staff,”
adds Christine Bacon, Recreation and
Education Coordinator at the Chardon
Senior Center. “The ladies who work
the carts are wonderful. They walk
around the room, asking people what
they would like, and then they go
and find it. They don’t just sit there.
They get involved and build a
connection with our seniors.”

Take the 100 Book Challenge at GCPL
If you’ve been looking for a reason to read outside your comfort zone
and expand your literary horizons, you need to take the GCPL 100Book Challenge. Participants have two years to read 100 books from a
list of about 200 titles that have been selected to induce discovery in
all genres and styles. That’s about a book a week. Granted, it’s not for
wimps. But, the prize is worth the effort. Keep reading.
Here’s how it works: Sign up for the challenge
at any GCPL reference desk. Then, you will be
able to “opt in” to the challenge inside your
online library account where your progress will
be tracked. After you’ve read the book, visit the
reference desk to answer a simple question about
it to prove you read the book. That’s it!
Complete the challenge, and receive a fleece GCPL jacket or vest from
the libraries’ Friends’ groups that will allow you to show off your literary

of Mobile Services, and as her
department has grown by three
vehicles and 11 employees during
the past two years, her patrons have
appreciated expanded coverage. “We
had been getting requests for more
stops, and with only one Bookmobile,
we weren’t able to offer needed
coverage,” she says. To help fill
those gaps and keep Geauga citizens
reading, GCPL added the Fun Bus to
its fleet. This full-service Bookmobile
targets non-Amish patrons, especially
children and families. It made its
debut run in early July at the the
Geauga YMCA and Chagrin Falls Park
Community Center.

Elementary and middle-school kids
check out books every Tuesday
for pleasure reading or school
assignments. They participate in
reading challenges and find titles the
library stocks especially for them. “The
Bookmobile does a lot to get and keep
kids excited about reading. I see them
checking out sports books, along with
Judy Moody and Beverly Cleary books.
It’s a lot of fun.”
Geauga County Public Library is
committed to providing materials
people want, while ensuring access for
all. The library empowers people to
keep reading, learning and growing.
“There’s always something people can
do to improve their lives,” Moriarty
says. “If people were to simply take
the time to see what’s available,
they could educate themselves about
something nearly every day. I’d
suggest they use the library. And, if
they can’t get to the library, let the
library come to them.”

of Courts to provide one-stop shopping to help you complete the necessary forms,
certify the paperwork and send it in for you. Simply bring the following paperwork
items to one of the two convenient Saturday sessions.

New! Telecoils (T-coils) help patrons
hear more clearly in all GCPL locations
Geauga County Public Library is pleased to introduce its new hearing loop
system that magnetically transmits sound from the PA system to the telecoils
in patrons’ hearing aids. This technology allows people who are struggling with
hearing loss to enjoy presentations and conversations. Muffled sounds become
crystal clear for people who have had difficulty hearing, even with the help of
their hearing aids.
Many churches, subways, airports and universities
already use telecoils, and users find it to be life
changing. Libraries are community spaces where people
routinely share ideas and converse with each other. This
extremely affordable technology allows a wider patron
base to enjoy the many resources their libraries provide.
This technology greatly enhances the audio experience
in all GCPL locations for anyone who struggles with
hearing loss.
“We want our buildings to be welcoming to everyone,”
says Ed Worso, GCPL Director. “Hearing loss is a
reality for many of our patrons, but it’s not something that has to impact them
negatively in our buildings. We are pleased to offer this hearing loop in all our
facilities. When people who wear hearing aids first flip the switch to activate
their T-coils, they immediately smile and share how happy they are to hear
conversations.”

County. Geauga County Job and Family Services
has coordinated the this program during the holiday
season for more than 45 years. Churches, civic
groups, organizations, companies, and individuals
participate by choosing to either “sponsor” a family for
the holidays, or they can help us collect needed items
which we pack and deliver to families not matched
with a community sponsor.
Financial education workshops
Financial education workshops are offered to Geauga
County residents free of charge. These workshops are
sponsored by Geauga County Job and Family Services
and The Ohio State University Extension.
Workshop topics include:

financial goals
• Creating a personalized budget
• Paying down debt and improving your credit
• Document emergency kit for valuable papers
Sponsor-a-family is a unique program supported solely
through donations and would not be
possible without the generosity of community
members. Volunteers are essential to the success of
the program and spend time sorting food and gifts.
Once the sorting is completed, bags of food for the
families and gifts for the children are packed and
delivered.
Volunteer tutoring program
WANTED: Adults who have a few hours each week to
make a difference in a child’s life.
Geauga County Job and Family Services is looking for
caring, motivated adults to participate in our volunteer
tutoring program this fall. This program matches
volunteers with local elementary students who need
extra help in basic reading and math.
Furniture and appliance donation
Geauga County Job and Family Services accepts
donations of new or like new furniture, mattresses,
and appliances. All items must be in good working
condition. Furniture with stains, tears, or dirt will not
be accepted. Furniture pick up is possible depending
on location.
The tutoring takes place during the school day at the
school. Volunteers are required to attend training and
complete a criminal background check, both provided
by Job and Family Services. Currently, the Volunteer
Tutoring Program is being offered at Cardinal Schools
in Middlefield, Burton Elementary in Burton, Newbury
Elementary School. Our volunteer kick off meeting will
be held on August 31, at 9 am at Geauga County Job
and Family Services.
