A lifelong, loving
home for every pet
MISSION
To improve the quality of life
for all pets by creating and
supporting programs that save
the lives of homeless pets and
promote healthy relationships
between people and pets.
3
Thank you,
because
of
YOU...
Dear Friends,
There are few things in life as
comforting as the companionship
of a dog or cat. Who can resist the
enthusiastic greeting of a dog happy
to see you or the gentle purring of a
cat asleep on your lap? In return, all
they need from us is the promise of
a safe and loving home.
Sadly, as a nation we don’t always
uphold that promise. An estimated
8 million pets annually need our help
to find homes. Whether born into
an unplanned litter or abandoned
by their owners, these pets deserve
the lifelong, loving homes that
the work of PetSmart Charities®
helps provide.
A better life for these pets begins
with YOU; our supporters who
recognize the value of companion
animals and the need for programs
that improve their well-being.
In 2011, our Emergency Relief
Waggin’® Program responded to
a record number of calls for help.
Our Emergency Relief Waggin’
4
vehicles completed 16 deployments,
including the tornadoes in Joplin,
the flooding in the South, and largescale puppy mill and hoarding cases
across the nation. Teaming up
with the ASPCA®, HSUS® and
local animal-welfare groups, our
Emergency Relief Waggin’ Program
provided millions of dollars worth
of supplies and equipment to aid
pets and rescuers.
As we met the demands of so
many disasters, we also had cause
to celebrate as well. In 2011, we
transported our 50,000th dog on
a Rescue Waggin’® vehicle. The
Rescue Waggin’ Program is a
national initiative that transfers
adoptable dogs and puppies from
animal shelters in communities with
severe pet overpopulation to animal
shelters elsewhere where adoptable
dogs and puppies are in demand.
Dawn, a beautiful 7-year-old Golden
Retriever, was the 50,000th dog
to take that life-saving ride. She
is among the thousands of dogs
transported on Rescue Waggin’®
vehicles each year in search of
a new home.
We change thousands more lives
annually by facilitating the largest
collective adoption programs in
North America. To date, we have
found homes for nearly 5 million
pets through our PetSmart Charities®
Adoption Centers located inside
every PetSmart® store. These
Adoption Centers are made
possible through collaboration with
PetSmart, Inc., which generously
provides space in their stores for
thousands of local pet adoption
agencies to use.
From everyday in-store adoption
programs to four National Adoption
Weekends, 65 Community Adoption
Events, and the opening of nine new
Dog and Cat Everyday Adoption
Centers inside PetSmart® stores,
animal-welfare agencies receive
free space for their adoption
programs and rewards for every pet
adopted through these events.
Because we believe sterilizing
pets is critical to ending pet
overpopulation, we also provide
grants to help animal-welfare
agencies develop and expand their
spay/neuter programs. In 2011,
we gave more than $13 million
in grants to support low-cost,
high-quality spay/neuter programs
in communities nationwide.
As we expand our programs to
end pet homelessness, we are
thankful for people like YOU who
support our mission. Your strong
commitment and the passion of the
animal-welfare community inspire us
to do more to save pets’ lives.
We know we can only be as strong
and successful as the people who
support us. Thanks to YOU, we can
continue making a difference in the
lives of millions of pets.
To build the capacity of these
groups to operate spay/neuter
clinics, we teamed up with the
ASPCA to support the Humane
Alliance—the leader in training
spay/neuter professionals. We also
sponsored The Humane Alliance’s
SNIP! Summit, a conference
attended by more than 850
spay/neuter professionals.

Community Adoption Events
PetSmart Charities® facilitates the
largest collective adoption programs in
North America. Since 1994, PetSmart
Charities has helped nearly 5 million
pets find homes and provided more than
$167 million in grants and program funding
to animal-welfare organizations.
Adoption Partners
We invite local animal-welfare organizations
to become approved PetSmart Charities
Adoption Partners so they can hold
adoption events inside PetSmart® stores.
By collaborating with 2,800 animal shelters
and operating Adoption Centers inside more
than 1,200 PetSmart® stores, we give local
animal shelters and rescue groups more
opportunities to showcase their adoptable
dogs and cats and find loving homes
for them.
In 2011, PetSmart Charities kicked off
its second year of Community Adoption
Events with 65 across the nation. These
Community Adoption Events are held
on weekends and in collaboration with
several animal shelters and rescue
groups. Generating increased media and
community awareness, these events often
result in increased attendance and more
adoptions over a short period of time.
More than 8,000 pets found homes through
Community Adoption Events in 2011.
In 2011, YOU helped more than 386,000
dogs and cats find new families through
in-store Adoption Programs.
Sponsored by
The Central Oklahoma Humane
Society in Oklahoma City, Okla.,
set up balloons, bright lights
and huge tents in a PetSmart®
store parking lot to kick off
their Midnight Woofness Mega
Adoption Event. A dozen animalwelfare organizations participated
in this 40-hour marathon adoption
event. Publicized as the largest
adoption event in Oklahoma
history, a record-setting 586
dogs and cats found new homes
that weekend.
7
Because of YOU, one lucky pet on average is adopted through PetSmart Charities® every minute a PetSmart® store is open.
Everyday Adoption Centers
In 2011, PetSmart Charities® opened nine Everyday Adoption
Centers as part of its nationwide collaboration with
animal-welfare organizations to save more homeless pets.
These Everyday Adoption Centers, built inside PetSmart®
stores, provide animal shelters and rescue organizations with
expanded adoption facilities where dogs and cats stay until
they are adopted into lifelong homes. Not only do the homeless
pets live in a large, pet-friendly venue, but it eliminates the
need for shelter staff to transport pets from their shelter
to a PetSmart® store.
The benefits are huge for the partnering animal-welfare agencies:
• PetSmart Charities funds 100 percent of the build-out costs for each new
Everyday Adoption Center.
• PetSmart® does not charge the animal agency any rent for the
adoption space.
• Local animal-welfare partners can expand their pet adoption program and
available adoption space to find homes for even more pets, every day.
In 2011, 8,498 dogs and cats were adopted through PetSmart Charities’
Everyday Adoption Centers around the country.

Lexington Humane Society in
Lexington, Kentucky, opened an
Everyday Adoption Center in a local
PetSmart® store in October 2011.
Almost immediately, the Lexington
Humane Society experienced
a 13 percent increase in their
in-store adoptions.
“This increase is on top of an already
very healthy PetSmart® in-store
adoption program, which now
constitutes 44 percent of our total adoptions,” says Susan
Malcomb, president of the Lexington Humane Society.

Fort Worth Animal Care and Control in Fort Worth, Texas,
opened their second Everyday Adoption Center in a
PetSmart ® store in December 2011. Before either
Everyday Adoption Center opened, Fort Worth’s animal
shelter adopted only 100 animals each month. Their
first Everyday Adoption Center resulted in the annual
adoption of an additional 2,600 dogs and cats. Their
second Everyday Adoption Center is expected to double
those numbers.
“This collaboration has paid off on so many fronts,”
says Scott Hanlan, assistant code compliance director
for the City of Fort Worth. “Not only has it increased our
adoption rates, but it has increased the notoriety of our
program, our relationships with rescue partners, and
good will in the community.”
Adoption Rewards
In addition to adoption fees, which our adoption partners keep, our
Adoption Rewards program pays partner agencies for every pet adopted,
whether through an in-store adoption program, Community Adoption
Event, National Adoption Weekend, or Everyday Adoption Center. This
helps our partners offset pet care costs and gives them resources to
enhance their adoption programs.
In 2011, our adoption partners received more than $6.5 million in
funding through the Adoptions Reward Program.

EMERGENCY RELIEF WAGGIN’®
Pets are especially vulnerable to injury and
abandonment when a natural or man-made
disaster occurs. Like us, they need basic
necessities to survive until they can be
reunited with their families or find homes.
PetSmart Charities®’ Emergency Relief
Waggin®’ vehicles stand ready to deliver
comfort and aid to affected animals, as
well as supplies and equipment for their
rescuers. We also dispatch teams of
specially-trained volunteers to every disaster
to unload supplies and set up temporary
shelters, enabling rescuers to focus on
affected animals and provide the care and
comfort they need.
In 2011, our Emergency Relief Waggin’
vehicles completed 16 deployments,
including the largest disaster deployment in
the program’s 7-year history. Each vehicle
contained $80,000 worth of supplies and
equipment to help pets and their rescuers
cope with record flooding and deadly
tornadoes, as well as large-scale puppy mill,
hoarding and animal abuse cases.
When disaster strikes, YOU send Emergency
Relief Waggin’ vehicles to help pets in need.
When the spring of 2011 brought record flooding and deadly tornados to the
Midwest and southern United States, PetSmart Charities dispatched 23 Emergency
Relief Waggin’ vehicles to Memphis, Tennessee and Joplin, Missouri. Teaming up
with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®, volunteers set
up distribution centers in both Joplin and Memphis to assist the thousands of pets
displaced by these disasters.
The Emergency Relief Waggin’
program has helped nearly
36,000 pets left displaced
or suffering because of
natural or man-made
disasters since 2007.

Cruelty Situation in Arizona
In March, PetSmart Charities® responded to an animal cruelty situation
in Witch Wells, a town in northeastern Arizona. Responders found
dog feces piled high in corners of the pens and several dogs were near
death. Other dogs had mange and bite marks on their necks and faces.
PetSmart Charities dispatched an Emergency Relief Waggin’ vehicle
and worked with the Humane Society of the United States to help more
than 150 large-breed dogs and 40 cats receive emergency assistance
and medical care.

Puppy Mill Case
Cat Rescue in Florida
In June, PetSmart Charities
dispatched an Emergency Relief
Waggin’ vehicle to a puppy
mill in Hudson, North Carolina.
First responders reported that
approximately 300 dogs were
housed in unsanitary conditions
and lacked proper socialization
and medical care. Caldwell
County Animal Control seized all
the animals. PetSmart Charities
teamed up with the Humane
Society of the United States in
this rescue effort.
In June, PetSmart Charities®
dispatched an Emergency Relief
Waggin’® vehicle to the largest
all-cat rescue in our organization’s
history—more than 650 cats at a
facility near Gainesville, Florida.
Together with the ASPCA®, we
helped care for these sick cats
and placed them into local animal
shelters where they eventually
found their lifelong, loving homes.

Dawn, a 7-year-old Golden Retriever,
became the 50,000th dog to be
transported on a PetSmart Charities®
Rescue Waggin’® vehicle.
Given as a gift, Dawn was relinquished
to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane
Society in New Mexico just six months
later. Her family said Dawn was a faithful
friend who loved playing with children
and going on walks, but they could
no longer care for her.
A week later, Dawn boarded a Rescue
Waggin’ vehicle for her life-saving journey
to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley
in Boulder, Colorado. Just two days
after her arrival in Boulder, a new family
adopted Dawn, giving her the forever
home she deserved.
Every year, more and more
pets board a Rescue Waggin’
vehicle for a life-saving ride
to new shelters and homes.
Crisscrossing the nation, Rescue Waggin’
vehicles are on the road all year long,
transporting dogs and puppies from
overcrowded animal shelters where
space and resources are limited to new
communities where adoptable dogs are
more in demand.

Reunited for Play Days
Trooper and Ike are brothers that spent the first 18 months of their life together with a family that loved them. But when
their owner deployed to Afghanistan, they were relinquished to Orange County Animal Shelter in Orange, Virginia. With
little chance of adoption for these older dogs in Virginia, Trooper and Ike boarded a Rescue Waggin’ vehicle to St. Hubert’s
Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey. Two weeks later, both dogs were adopted, but into different homes. Fate
intervened when the new owners met at St. Hubert’s and became friends. Now the two dogs meet regularly for play dates.

GRANTS
When communities need to address their pet
overpopulation problem, they turn to PetSmart
Charities® for help.
In 2011, PetSmart Charities provided more grants
than ever before to animal shelters and spay/
neuter clinics. Working with local groups, we
mentor agencies and provide high-impact grants
that target specific geographical areas where there
is critical need. The goal is to prevent unplanned
pet births over the long term by providing targeted
spay/neuter surgeries.
Targeted spay/neuter grants focus on altering
cats and dogs in specific areas of the community.
Free-roaming cat spay/neuter grants support
trap-neuter-return projects for community cats.
PetSmart Charities provides funding for surgical
equipment and spay/neuter surgeries, as well
as reasonable expenses for items needed to get
the surgeries done, like marketing materials and
humane traps.
Thanks to YOU, PetSmart Charities provided
more than $13 million in grants to support
low-cost, high-quality spay/neuter programs
in communities nationwide.
Celebrating 100 Clinics Trained,
Millions of Pets Sterilized
PetSmart Charities and the ASPCA®
continued their on-going support of the
Humane Alliance and celebrated the training
of its 100th spay/neuter clinic in 2011.
The Humane Alliance operates the National
Spay/Neuter Response Team—the nation’s
only training center for spay/neuter clinics
to learn how to open and operate lowcost, high-quality, high-volume facilities.
Collectively, the 100 clinics have sterilized
nearly 2 million cats and dogs.
“Our long-standing collaboration with
PetSmart Charities and the ASPCA allows
us to continue to provide the spay/neuter
services pets desperately need, as well as the
opportunity to train veterinarians from all over
the country in the high-quality, high-volume
spay/neuter techniques that can get more
pets sterilized,” says Quita Mazzina, executive
director of the Humane Alliance.

“There were so many unseen feral cats
in the farms and woods, and I couldn’t get
anyone to care. That’s when I went to PetSmart
Charities for help.”
Laura Jordan
Feral Cat Program Manager
Our Companions
Turning a Cat Problem into Managed Care
Our Companions of Ashford, Connecticut
received a $22,900 targeted grant from the
PetSmart Charities ® High-Impact Grant
Program to conduct a two-year, trap-neuterreturn program. The goal of the Sterile Feral
program: sterilize every cat in Ashford.
Laura Jordan, who leads the program, says
the rural community had numerous sick
and dying feral cats that needed care. With
advice from her PetSmart Charities grants
mentor, she teamed up with Ashford Animal
Control and convinced local residents to let
her onto their properties to trap and sterilize
the cats. A local veterinarian donated
time and clinic space to perform up to
10 spay/neuter surgeries per week.
20
The program exceeded its goal of
sterilizing more than 500 cats. In addition,
Jordan said the program helped Our
Companions build closer ties with
the community, paving the way for the
organization to open a new domestic
animal sanctuary in 2012. There also
has been an important attitude shift, with
Ashford residents now seeing feral cats as
living creatures in need of care, as opposed
to a nuisance.
“This grant was the best thing ever,”
says Jordan.

Saving Cats in Florida
The Humane Society of Tampa Bay

neuter project funded by a grant
from PetSmart Charities. The project
has performed nearly 4,000 surgeries
on free-roaming cats in two high
intake ZIP codes.
Free “Spay Day” Draws
Huge Crowds in Arizona
Hundreds of people waited patiently
in a line a quarter-mile long to receive
free spay/neuter surgeries for their
pets from Maricopa County Animal
Care and Control and Arizona Humane
Society, thanks to a grant from
PetSmart Charities®.
Six mobile units and three fixed site
clinics participated in the event. The
goal was to perform 310 surgeries and
provide 315 vouchers to the crowd.
By the end of the day, 625 surgeries
were completed and 1,200 vouchers
were distributed.
“This grant has allowed us to help
several thousand cats that would
not otherwise be sterilized and that
translates into lives saved,” says
Sherry Silk, executive director of
the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.
“There is just no way to save lives
without this kind of grant support.”
Surrounding Hillsborough
County has developed a model
trap-neuter-return program. They
reportedly have 2,840 free-roaming
cat colonies with 14,780 felines
registered through the program.
Thanks to their hard work, feline
euthanasia in Hillsborough County
has been reduced almost
50 percent in the last six years.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING
In 2011, we sponsored 40 state, regional and
national conferences in the U.S. to advance
animal-welfare education.
The SNIP! Summit Provides
Spay/Neuter Education
PetSmart Charities® teamed up with the
ASPCA® to sponsor The SNIP! Summit,
a spay/neuter best practices conference
hosted by the Humane Alliance in Asheville,
North Carolina.
The SNIP! Summit offered more than
36 workshops, special sessions, forums,
and wet labs to share proven strategies
and techniques of high-quality, high-volume
spay/neuter programs. The conference
was a huge success with over 850 people
in attendance from the United States
and Canada.
DVD Promotes
Early Spay/Neuter
E-learning Offers Animal-Welfare
Professionals New Skills
One of the biggest barriers for early
spay/neuter is the resistance of some
veterinarians to perform these surgeries on
dogs and cats under six months old. Because
pets are adopted as young as eight weeks
and because pets can go into heat as early as
four months, PetSmart Charities is a strong
proponent of early spay/neuter.
With local animal-welfare agencies on tight
budgets, webinars are a cost-effective
method of learning for animal-welfare staff
and volunteers. Taught by experts in their
respective fields, these online sessions
provide animal-welfare professionals with
the skills they need to run animal shelters
and spay/neuter clinics and look after the
animals in their care.
To demonstrate the efficacy of this practice,
PetSmart Charities funded the Humane
Alliance to produce a video on early
spay/neuter techniques and tips for
veterinarians. The video was distributed at
three major veterinary conferences—the North
American Veterinary Conference, the Western
Veterinary Conference and the American
Veterinary Medical Association Conference—
reaching more than 23,000 veterinarians
and students.
In 2011, PetSmart Charities offered 33 free
live webinars on topics such as adoptions,
agency administration, animal care, animal
behavior, fundraising, humane education,
shelter medicine and spay/neuter. More
than 9,500 animal-welfare professionals
participated in these live webinars or
reviewed the more than 200 archived
sessions available on our website.
Thanks to YOU, animal-welfare
professionals and the veterinary
community have increased access
to e-learning opportunities, conferences
and other resources to improve the lives
of companion animals.

YOU.
We cannot save pets’ lives without
Thank you for all you do to support our vision
of a lifelong, loving home for every pet.
Every action makes a difference. In fact, a gift of just $25 can help PetSmart Charities® save the life
of a homeless pet.
You can rest assured that we invest your contributions wisely, making strategic investments that are most
effective in saving pets’ lives and preventing unplanned births. In everything we do, we strive to be:
• Relevant: PetSmart Charities is the largest funder of animal welfare groups in North America.
In 2011, we provided more than $33 million in grants and program funding to help pets in need;
• Efficient: PetSmart Charities gives 84 cents of every dollar directly to help pets in need,
one of the highest program-to-total cost ratios among all national animal welfare
charities, based on 2011 financial figures;
• Effective: PetSmart Charities finds adoptive homes for nearly 400,000 dogs and
cats every year—nearly 5 million to date;
• Trusted: PetSmart Charities is in the top one percent of charities rated by
Charity Navigator and has received their highest, 4-star rating for nine
consecutive years.
