Noah’s Ark
A toy and storage facility for our ring-turned figures. The basic collection contains 36 animals as well as Noah and his wife.
Ring-turned animals have been made in the unique technique of
ring-turning for generations. To obtain the beautiful toy animals,
the ring-turner (Reifendreher) turns precise grooves out of a ring
of moist fir wood. Next, the raw shapes of the figures are cut off
the wooden ring in slices using a hammer and a knife. Only then
does the figure, or the partial figure, reveal its typical profile.
The toy maker’s skilled hands carve the animal’s final shape and
carefully paint it. We make various ring-turned animals
and are constantly expanding our range of figures. All
of the animals feel perfectly at home either in the toy
ark or display case ark.
Exotic animals such as elephants, camels, giraffes
and tigers have been ring-turned in just the
same way as farm and forest animals from the
ring-turner’s home region, the Erzgebirge
(Ore Mountains) in south-eastern Germany.
These wooden but nevertheless lively figures are complemented
by trees and human figures. You can put the animals together in
groups, like a flock of sheep with a
shepherd and watchdog, neighbourhood scenes, or whole zoos.
Old factory pattern books have been
carefully preserved by trading houses as
references and are now a rich source of
information about the vivid fantasy of Seiffen’s
ring-turners and toy-makers in crafting a
wide range of figures and animals. Large and
small figures from our workshop in the hands of many children
and collectors demonstrate how we are keeping the tradition of
ring-turning alive.

can also be purchased separately,
allowing you to
populate it as you
wish. The family of
ring-turned
animals can be
expanded
subsequently by
buying additional
collections.

God’s covenant under the rainbow.

The Ark Mountains are made of light wood parts that are joined
together. Ark No. 0100 fits snugly under the rainbow and all
size 4 animals are suitable for inhabiting the mountains. If you
would like them to be glued in place on the mountain, our
workshop would be happy to do this for you (using your own
animals if you wish). Individual terraces can be added to
standing Ark Mountains to make room for more animals later,
if you run out of space.
These Ark Mountains are delivered with a rainbow but without
animals. They are suitable for Ark 0100 * and all size 4 animals.

Walking herd of mixed cows

This mixed herd offers a good view of the whole range of cows we make.
It brings together cows from size 5 collections, a cowherd, his dog and a group of small coloured chip trees.
The great level of detail
and variety of colour
make the cows very special figures from the
ring-turner’s workshop.
Turning, carving and
painting these animals in
such a fine and natural
way demands a high degree of craftsmanship. An
outstanding example is the cow licking which is part of
the walking herd. Never before in the long history of
ring-turning in the Erzgebirge have such cows been
made since making it requires a high degree of skill
because of the animal’s tricky pose. We are therefore
thrilled to present it as one of our collection of
ring-turned animals.

This illustration shows just a few of the many things you can do with your toy ark such as opening the doors, removing the roof or
opening the side of the hull. Smaller animals can climb into the ark via the retractable gangplank and larger animals can walk into the ark
on an extendable bridge - allowing them to escape the flood and rescue their species from the rising waters. As you can see, you can add

The history of the chip wood box is
closely linked to toy making in the
Erzgebirge. When looking for a simple
but sturdy box for their ring-turned
animals and figures, the toy makers
found the chip wood box was the ideal
solution. Originally, they were made by
drawing off wide sheets of wood by
hand or using a large water-driven
slicer. To turn these sheets into boxes,
they were than cut and shaped. Some
were also richly decorated. We prefer to
use fir to make the oval or round chip
wood boxes we currently use.

Pull-along animals *
These pull-along animals
demonstrate a harmony
between the wooden body of
the ring-turned animal and
the thin slice of wood it is
affixed to. The animals are
affixed using nails so that
the pleasure of playing will
not be spoilt by things falling
apart. The wheels are made
of terracotta (which makes a
sound while going along)
with an irregular surface
and are painted in such a
way as to make the animal's
motion visible to further
enhance the child’s
enthusiasm and pleasure
while playing.

The snake is looking temptingly from among the leaves of the apple tree
into the perfect community of man and animals. This Garden of Eden
collection of size 4 animals allows you to bring to life the scene shown
here as well as many other scenes. In time, you can enlarge this collection

All human and animal figures, whatever the size, are
in perfect proportion to each other. This also applies
to the size 8 flock of Frisian sheep with a shepherd,
who is 8 cm tall. This is the first human figure not
made by turned pieces being joined
together (as has been done for
centuries), but by being ringturned and cut from the ring
in one piece. He thus fits
perfectly into the big
family of sheep - not only
because of his calm and
uncomplaining nature but
also because of the way
he was crafted.

A great peace surrounds the shepherd as he wanders
about the countryside accompanied by his donkey,
his herd of sheep and his dog. It was a peaceful
atmosphere like this, in pleasant company far from
the hustle and bustle of city life that enabled the
maker to create this herd of sheep and give it not only
shape and colour, but also a soul. Occasionally you
may find minor defects in amongst the multitude of
sheep.

The following can be made into a Christmas pyramid: Candle pyramid 6001 and natural wooden fan 6151
The heat that rises from the burning candles causes the fan to turn setting the whole pyramid in motion. In subdued lighting you can then
observe a unique play of light and shadow. Through its construction and rich adornment with ring-turned animals and figures, this candle
pyramid offers the perfect insight into Seiffen’s living folk art tradition - no matter whether you choose the painted pyramid or the natural
one.

The candle pyramid may either be placed on a firm and level
surface or hung from the ceiling. Either way - it is always an
impressive eye-catcher both at home and as part of a collection.
If hung, the stand is replaced by a turned ball.

maximum). They are secured with sturdy connectors hidden in the

The special mechanism that sets the whole
candelabrum into motion gives you a
multitude of different views of the pyramid,
fascinating collectors and craftsmen alike.
The hot air rising from the candles causes
the fan and thus the tiers of the pyramid to
turn. The position of the fan blades
determines the speed of movement as does
the number of candles.

The prototype of the candle
pyramid, which can consist of up to
six tiers, was constructed in 1993.
Now, following the completion of a
new range of forest animals, we are
pleased to present the fourth tier.
Good old-fashioned handicraft and
finest winter fir were needed to
produce these animals – ringturned figures in an entirely new
form. Thanks to the variety of the
craft, we were also able to make fir
trees that harmonise with the
animals using the original
technique dating back to 1861. You
can easily add this fourth tier to any
of our candle pyramids either from
the first or a later series.

The leaf trees consist of a
turned trunk in the middle
with leaves that are glued
to the trunk (and not
shaved as with the shaved
trees). The shaved trees are
turned on a lathe from a
single piece of lime wood.

allowing them to withstand
the occasional knock
without being damaged.

While creating the Frisian sheep,
the craftsman had a clear image
of a natural-looking tree to
complement the herd of sheep
he had in mind. It was a
combination of this clear vision
and exhaustive testing with
various materials, tools and
techniques that finally produced
the wood fibre tree. Each one is
crafted on the lathe with great
skill and care, producing a
sturdy tree that looks very
natural.

With the invention of
new stamping and
embossing techniques,
production of intricate
and highly detailed
toys began in the
Western Erzgebirge in
1861. Economic
production of
cardboard products
gave rise to an
industry that
employed more than
1200 workmen and
140 engravers. When
the last factory, in
Buchholz, closed in
1953, it wasn’t just the
pretty toys that
disappeared from the
market. Along with
them went the know how and craft skills
needed to make them,
from making the tools
used to produce them
through to the
application of the last
lick of paint. These fir
trees prove that we
have succeeded in
reviving a lost craft
and in creating trees
that are, like no others,
in harmony with our
forest animals.

This film in German gives the viewer an
insight into the production of Werner ringturned animals and figures - from the felling
of the trees through to the turning and final
painting (playing time 8 minutes).
This wooden display turntable is a typical
presentation of the ring-turned animals in
the constricted space of a sales showroom.
The merchandising display basic collection
consists of 86 articles, with a separate section
for each group of articles. Thanks to the
nature of the craft of ring-turning, the
display can be used from both sides, with
space remaining free for the presentation of
more articles.
Price stickers with the current recommended
retail prices are included. Prices are reviewed
every year.

Because the forest
animals are so slender
and have long, slim
legs, they have always
been carved from lime
wood that was cut using a band
saw. Now, for the first time, forest animals have
been made from the turned ring, thanks to the
perfection of the turning technique and the use
of moon wood - finest winter fir felled in the
European alps in accordance with the phases of
the moon.

The Erzgebirge mountain region is such a beautiful place, worthy of
world cultural heritage status, that Dusdav the elk walked for many
miles in order to spend the Christmas period of 2008 in the woods
here. We Saxons welcomed him, fed him, loved him and protected him,
readily identifying with the friendly fellow and immortalizing him in our
folk art. So it was that the original Dusdav, The Saxon Elk travelled to Vancouver as the official companion of the German Olympic team to remind our
sportsmen and women that not only the fans at the venue, but also millions
of people at home were supporting them and sharing their pain and
their jubilation. We remember with pride the how we welcomed our
athletes back home, together with Dusdav, his antlers richly
adorned with medals.
