ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C)
12th June, 2016
Reflection: How easy, and how human, it is to judge people around us – consciously or unconsciously. We
do it each and every moment of each and every day. In fact, Princeton psychologists discovered it takes a
tenth of a second to form an impression of a stranger from their face. And trustworthiness is the trait
which people judge first.
Simon and Jesus’ instant reactions to the ‘sinful’ woman, likely a prostitute, could not have been farther
apart. Simon’s reaction reminds me of the school yard taunt – “it takes one, to know one”. Simon has not, or
will not, face his own human frailties and in refusing to do so, lifts himself up by putting others down.
Jesus, on the other hand, the one without sin, applauds the woman’s grace to seek forgiveness and does not
so much as flinch from her touch.
Every one of us, even the saints, have pasts. Jesus’ actions remind us that no matter the bad we have
caused, we are not locked in to always being shunned, condemned or treated badly. Nothing is too large for
God’s mercy to deal with, when we ask for it.
The Princeton research made me also consider our current election campaign – imagine the money that
could be redirected to help those in need, like the woman in today’s gospel, if it only ran for one tenth of a
second!
Matt Lovegrove—Pastoral Leadership Team
Trinity Refugee Outreach (TRO) raised $2,500 last Sunday by hosting a soup & roll luncheon at
St Peter’s. This will be forwarded to THE ‘BRIGIDINE ASYLUM SEEKERS PROJECT’ (BASP).
We thank all who attended for their wonderful generosity.
PARISH STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM 2016
Our Stewardship Program continues this week as we focus on how
Our Parish Community values engagement.
Some of our parishioners will speak at Masses in St Peter’s over
the weekend and will share with us the importance of our parish in
their lives. They will discuss their own experiences and encourage
us all to be actively involved in parish life by joining and
participating in our parish groups and ministries. We thank them
for sharing their stories. Fr Michael, will be in St Paul’s & St
Catherine’s speaking about the significance of how our parishes
comes together as a community to celebrate the Eucharist.
STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM PRAYER
Lord, we thank you for calling us to be
your Church. Through our Baptism we are called
to service and to witness. In the Eucharist we
sustain and strengthen that call.
By serving others we follow your example and
proclaim our beliefs.
By our Christian generosity we demonstrate our
love and care. Lord, help us always to worship
you as you deserve, to grow in faith and
service and to give without counting the cost.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINDARY TIME (YEAR C)
Gospel: Luke 7: 36, 8: 3
One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to a meal. When he arrived at the Pharisee’s house and took his place at table, a woman
came in, who had a bad name in the town. She had heard he was dining with the Pharisee and had brought with her an alabaster
jar of ointment. She waited behind him at his feet, weeping, and her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them away with her
hair; then she covered his feet with kisses and anointed them with the ointment.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet, he would know who this woman
is that is touching him and what a bad name she has.’ Then Jesus took him up and said, ‘Simon, I have something to say to you.’
‘Speak, Master,’ was the reply. ‘There was once a creditor who had two men in his debt; one owed him five hundred denarii, the
other fifty. They were unable to pay, so he pardoned them both. Which of them will love him more?’ ‘The one who was pardoned
more, I suppose,’ answered Simon. Jesus said, ‘You are right.’
Then he turned to the woman. ‘Simon,’ he said, ‘you see this woman? I came into your house, and you poured no water over my
feet, but she has poured out her tears over my feet and wiped them away with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but she has been
covering my feet with kisses ever since I came in. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with
ointment. For this reason I tell you that her sins, her many sins, must have been forgiven her, or she would not have shown
such great love. It is the man who is forgiven little who shows little love.’ Then he said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’ Those who were with him at
table began to say to themselves, ‘Who is this man, that he even forgives sins?’ But he said to the woman, ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’
PACIFIC BELLES—THANK YOU!
A grey, wet, winter afternoon turned into a bright sunny afternoon in the McKenna
Centre last Saturday. 70 people enjoyed great toe-tapping entertainment by the
delightful Pacific Belles. This was supplemented with a festive setting and a great
afternoon tea. It was wonderful to see the communities of Holy Trinity coming together
assisting with the distribution of afternoon tea and cleaning up afterwards.
Heartfelt thanks to Fr Michael for turning on the heaters well in advance and placing the
urns in position and turning them on so that the water was boiling when required. Sincere
thanks must go to Sr Delia, not only for her amazing poster, (which the Belles were
absolutely delighted with and asked to take one with them for their office), also for
assisting the group, by pressing the 'go and stop buttons on the i-pad.
Thank you to everyone who attended and who made it such a wonderful day. We
made a small profit of $46 –this has been donated to the BASP.
Lord, we commend to you people in need:
