Thought for the Month
Meanwhile down at the stable…..
Ah, the wonderful Christmas story, beloved
for centuries by young and old alike. Here it
comes again, reproduced in churches, schools
and cribs all over the place. The magic is retold, and there are the tender smiles and shining eyes, even an odd tear or two, which often
greet its telling.
So let’s sneak off to the stable, join with
artists, poets and storytellers, mingle with
composers, classical and popular, as well as
with priests and congregations. Let us be
quiet in the prepared position of awe to watch
and to listen. What is there to see?
What a huge, comfortable crib,
crammed full with soft, clean straw, glistening
like spun gold. Just right for that lovely darkhaired young woman, robed in shimmering
blue, a cut glass gold edged halo on her head,
as she gazes down at a chubby new born
baby, staring up at her with his big brown
eyes. A tall, dark, handsome man, with a
solid gold halo, just behind her, looks on
proudly. He must be the father.
[No, he’s not! Sshh. God’s his dad! This is
not the time for controversy! SSSHHHH!!!]
Did you see that – outside the door –
outside the window? Did you hear that?
Look, thousands upon thousands of angels –
all with gold and silver halos, long blond hair,
linen and satin robes of white, matching the
soft plumage of their snow-white wings!
What a sight! And what about those glorious
fanfares on trumpets and horns, with wonderful hallelujahs in perfect harmonies! Amazing!
[Ho! Ho! Ho! Who’s that bloke in the red
coat, black boots, and the long white beard?
Ho! Ho! Shut him up someone! He’s got no
place in here!!]
Now who are these coming in? Looks
like a group of shepherds? How do we know?
Easy… They’ve got crooks in their hands and
some lambs in their arms. See how their eyes
are shining – have they seen a vision? Their
faces are full of light, matching the halos they
are wearing. They are kneeling, admiring the
baby. He must be a very, very special child.
Goodness me, it’s getting even more
crowded. Three more chaps waiting outside –
rich aristocratic men, even royalty, wearing
fashion hats with red and purple halos. Why
aren’t they coming in? Who’s stopping them?
[That’ll cost you 500 shekels, or buy two, get
one free… Who let those check-out girls in?
And those cash-tills? Get them out. We’ll
lose our jobs! Money’s not needed here.
What about trade and the economy? This is
free to everyone!! FREE! FREE!]
In your mind’s eye, how do you see the
Christmas story?
The stable’s gone quiet: everyone is as still as
a statue, like a Christmas picture on a sentimental Christmas card.
[Don’t like what’s happening!
What’s
wrong? That, there, on baby Jesus! You
mean the cross-shaped shadow lying across
him, like a black halo? It’s only that bright
star shining through the stable window. Is it?
Of course it is – what else could it be?]
In your mind, how you understand the
Christmas story?
A very Happy Christmas, everyone

The late Denis John Norman
Another year of the
Parish News
Born at Middle Hill Farm Huntsham on 18th
August 1940, he moved to Burrow Farm
Ashbrittle in 1942. Denis attended Stawley
Primary School and then on to Courtfields,
Wellington. He was a keen bell ringer at
Ashbrittle Church with his two sisters. He
played cricket for Ashbrittle for many years,
and was the fixture secretary for a long time.
Denis married Joyce in 1961 and had
four children, Leslie, Pauline, Robert and
Kathleen. He farmed with his brother Percy
until 1975 when Percy went to farm at Bridgwater. Horses were also a big part of his life,
riding, going hunting and training point to
point horses.
Living at Burrow Farm for 71 years
meant he took an active part in village events.
He was chairman of the village
hall committee and hosted various events at
the farm, including barn dances, the Queen’s
Silver Jubilee celebrations, and in recent years
was often the cook at the BBQs!
He was truly a family man with his 10
grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Ashbrittle Church was packed to overflowing for the funeral service when his family and many friends paid their final tributes to
his memory.
Joyce and the family would like to say a
sincere thank you to the Rev Martin Perry, the
church wardens, ladies for the wonderful
flower arrangements in the church and all the
village people for allowing cars to be parked
in every available space around the village on
the funeral day.
Many thanks to all our contributors, particularly those who have made a regular contribution throughout 2013, to create another successful year for the ‘Parish News’. We hesitate to mention names but where would we be
without the features from our regular contributors and reports from local organisations.
The social functions in our parishes
raise money for many good causes, both inside and outside of our area. When we talk to
friends from outside of the area they are
amazed by the number and variety of events
that take place.
The Parish News was first published in
1965 (we believe) and is rapidly approaching
its first half century, a fantastic record.
The print run
We print 390 copies of the magazine each
month, which are distributed promptly around
the parishes by a very efficient team, led by
Graham Henson.
The distribution team is:
Ashbrittle - Andrew and Liz Burt, Michael
House and Dave Howe.
Bathealton - Morag Berthon, Jo Forrester,
Jessica Bun and Francesca Burrows.
Greenham - Lyn Colebrooke and Peggy
Wotton.
Kittisford - Sara Burns-Cox.
Stawley - The Village Shop, John Owen and
Graham Henson.
Tracebridge - Dominic Tinckner
Suzanne Warne
Copies are also posted out to people
who have left the area but still want to keep in
touch with local events. The magazine is
now also available on the Stawley website
www.stawleypc.org
We also thank our advertisers, who together with your donations, fund the costs of
the magazine. We couldn’t survive without
you.

News from Stawley Under Fives
Pre School
News from Friends of Stawley School
(FOSS)
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells!
You may have heard the sound of angelic little voices wafting from the Pre School this
month as the children rehearse for their
Christmas Concert. As busy as Santa’s elves,
the children are happily preparing for their
favourite time of year by making festive
cards, sparkly snowflake ornaments and bright
bunting to decorate the Pavilion for their
Christmas party. I have heard a rumour that
Father Christmas may be making a guest appearance…..
New Committee
A new committee emerged from the FOSS
AGM last month. Lucy Sentance has taken
over the role of Chair with support from Jess
Vellacott as Vice Chair, Kate Merrick as
Treasurer, Persephone Cooper as Secretary
and Torie Wood as Pavilion Rep.
A big thank you to the previous Committee members who have now stepped down.
In particular Anna Steele who held the Chair
role for three years with incredible vitality and
efficiency.
Winter wine tasting
Thank you to all who supported the recent
wine tasting evening, kindly hosted by Tanya
and Charles Edis at Greenham Hall. It was a
truly memorable evening with lots of local
faces sampling the delicious wine provided by
Winesolutions. The evening raised a fantastic
£350. Watch out Charles and Tanya, we are
all looking forward to the next one!
Halloween Party
The annual FOSS Halloween party was, as
always, a great success. The children (and
many parents!) enjoyed dressing up for a
disco and barbecue. £132 was raised which
has provided a new, well deserved, rugby kit
for the school rugby team.
What’s next?
For the children…..
The FOSS Christmas party will be held on the
last day of term with lots of games, music and
perhaps a visit from Father Christmas.
Donations
If you have any old Christmas cards, wrapping paper or anything that shimmers and
glimmers, don’t throw it away! Please donate
to the Pre School to be recycled into wondrous festive decorations!
The Pre School would also greatly appreciate the donation of any ‘let’s pretend’
role play toys or costumes, such as pretend
toy shops or make believe props. If you have
anything lurking in a cupboard please think of
us and either drop it in at Pre School or call
Torie Wood 01823 673371 to collect. All donations are greatly received and much appreciated.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year from all at Stawley
Pre School.
Torie Wood
And for the adults…

7th December, eyes down 8pm at Appley Pavilion. Fantastic prizes to be won!

African Evening Thanks
This event was planned and marketed as a
community event, featuring David Wilkin’s
(Gary’s Dad) wildlife films. This it certainly
proved to be, with performances by the Village Festival Choir and instrumentalists, Paul
Jacques and Alan Taylor, and a display of art
by Tilly Willis from Bathealton.
Contributions to the evening, from our
Parish businesses, included Stawley Goat’s
Cheese from Hill Farm Dairies, Focaccia from
Tracebridge Sourdough, Butternut Squash
from Bishops Barton, and Granary Bread
from Bawden Bakers (Bampton), suppliers to
the Village Stores.
Further afield, Wellington businesses:
Carly Press, Waitrose, ASDA, Interiors and
Flowers by Design (ingeniously providing
Proteas from South Africa in relevant beer
bottles!), Cheese & Wine Shop, and Buy and
Save all contributed. Veysey Butchers and
TESCO in Cullompton were also generous.
Twelve desserts were contributed by a
number of people, while others were available
on the day for all the various tasks needed to
provide a fun evening for a brimming full Pavilion. The evening raised £1, 252.
Our thanks to you all.
Clive and Val Wall
And thanks from Stawley Church
All 100 tickets were sold for the African
Wildlife Evening at the Appley Pavilion on
Friday 1st Nov.
An atmosphere of expectation developed as we took our seats in readiness for the
two films taken and narrated by David Wilkins, which gave us an introduction to the
beauty and diversity of Africa’s wildlife. This
was complemented by the excellent African
cuisine and artwork on display.
I am aware that others will be giving
their thanks to those individuals. However I
would like to say a very big thank you to Val
and Clive Wall, on behalf of everyone involved in the running of Stawley Church, for
the massive effort they made to ensure a gift
of over £1250 was made to the church fabric
fund. It was the largest fund raising event at
the pavilion that I have seen for a long time, 7
and it clearly took a herculean effort on their
part to ensure its success. We are very grateful to Val and Clive, and to those of you who
came to support it.

The Luard Trio
Mozart to the Movies
This event was held in the Appley Pavilion
and what a brilliant occasion it was. It was
not only the wonderful singing and music, but
also the bright colourful costumes worn,
shown off by the carefully placed stage lighting and the well chosen decor which surrounded the trio in their floor setting.
Then there were all the tables decorated
with flowers and candles ready for a lovely
two course meal, all enjoyed during the interval by some 48 who attended.
For the second half the trio had a change of
dresses, for their rendering of songs from the
Movies.
Our many thanks go to Caroline Luard,
Valerie Wright and Julie Dance for giving up
their time to come and entertain us in aid of
Stawley Church, which benefited by £560.
Last, but not least, our thanks go to James
Luard and his many helpers for organising the
event and also to those who supported it.
I hope you all enjoyed the evening as
much as I did.

The future of Forestry

When the concrete spreads and the town conquers

From C.S.Lewis (1898-1963)
Early November, wasps are still around and
getting quite drunk on rotting fruit. They are
also feeding on the tiny green flowers of ivy.
Only the green wasps survive, who have already mated, and will hibernate soon. Hornets are also about late this year and will hibernate in clefts of trees. They are, in fact,
less aggressive than wasps but if they do sting
it is more painful.
The mild wet weather has produced a
bumper crop of fungi. I’ve been picking
mushrooms for weeks. A striking fungus that
I’ve seen around is the shaggy ink cap or lawyers wig, this is cone shaped and when young
has fluffy white (petals) sort of! But, when it
is old it turns into an inky black mess. The
ink cap can be eaten when young, but has relations which can have harmful results.
A walk on the wild side
There were still a lot of wild flowers in evidence until the temperature dropped. I recently spotted quite a few dandelions and
creeping buttercups in flower. Generally a
half hour walk in Devon and Somerset produces ten different wild flowers in any month
of the year. Try it.
Woodcock are arriving from Northern
countries and usually come in on a full moon.
They are large mottled brown birds with long
beaks which they use, mostly at night, probing the soft earth for worms and insects.
Fieldfares and redwings, both members
of the thrush family, are also arriving. They
come from North East Europe and will be
well pleased this year with the amount of ber-

you enjoy sampling the tea shops in the area!!
They are a must to visit after our walks!!
Lunch Club
We were immediately engaged by the amazing array of toys and glove puppets that
Patricia Stewart brought along to show us
how she gains the confidence, trust and insights when working with traumatised children. We gained some understanding of how
specialised but rewarding her work must be,
so many thanks to Patricia for sharing this
with us.
Change is never easy but thanks to the
valiant help from the volunteers Freda, Michael, Jo and Clare the new logistics around
the provision of lunch did not get the better of
us. Together, we managed to serve up a satisfying meal kindly provided by Paul from Appley Globe.
We are still exploring various avenues
to find a way of maintaining the high standard
and ease of serving that Andrew provided for
so long. Unfortunately the lack of catering
facilities in the Village Hall kitchen is proving
a deterrent for potential chefs. There are
some ideas in the pipe line so lets hope we
will be sorted by the New Year.
But to coin the Strictly phrase ‘keep
coming’, especially to our ‘Christmas Special’
on Thursday 19th December.

from PCSO Fyne. The police received a total
of 37 calls during the last month. All incidences of crime that investigated occurred in
Wiveliscombe.
8. Reports from Members a. Roads. Cllr SB reported that Highways
had been to visit the road by the Pavilion and
had proposed a pedestrian sign be placed outside the Pavilion entrance. The ownership of
the land was yet to be confirmed by the Pavilion Committee. Once the sign was put up
road markings would be renewed. Cllr SB to
investigate the possibility of a ‘painted pavement’ and the flooding issue on the stretch of
road between the Pavilion and Appley Cross.
b. Footpaths and Gullies. Nothing to report.
Chairman to contact Mr Webber reference
gully clearance.
c. Salt bins. The salt bin at three Gates Corner has been damaged considerably. The
Council discussed the vulnerability if its position but agreed it was the appropriate siting.
Cllr SB to investigate the purchase of a new
one.
3. Award to the late Charles Hollick - The
Chairman reported that he had accompanied
Mrs Brenda Hollick and her son Michael to
the award ceremony for the ‘Chairman’s
Award for Service to the Community’, at
Taunton Rugby Club. There were approximately 40 awards across the whole of Somerset. Mrs Hollick was presented with a framed
certificate and some gifts.
4. Minutes of the last meeting - The Council
agreed that the minutes of the last meeting
were a true record. Proposed by Cllr SB, seconded by Cllr CStG.
5. Matters arising from the last meeting There were no matters arising from the last
minutes.
9. Position of Councillor - Correspondence
from TDBC had confirmed that the PC were
now in a position to seek a councillor for coopting onto the Council.
6. Finance - The Clerk informed the Council
that the bank balances were as follows:
Current Acc - £5836.54
Reserve Acc - £779.41
The Council discussed investing the Reserve
Account balance into a higher interest account
to optimise interest. Clerk to investigate.
10. Emergency Accommodation Coordinator (EAC) - The late Cllr Hollick had
been the EAC. Chairman to determine what
is required in the position. Clerk to hold file.
7. Planning a. 35/13/007 - New Farm Buildings. The
Chairman and Cllr CStG attended and spoke
11. Website - The Council thanked the Clerk
for building the new website and discussed
12
how it could be promoted.
The Club’s Future
The 50 Club started in the 60’s with the aim
of raising funds for the Church and providing
prizes for the monthly draw.
The Parochial Church Council feels that
the time has come to increase greatly the
prizes but in order to do this many more members are needed and also, unfortunately, an
increase in subscriptions.
For various reasons the original membership has dropped to 45 and in order to
make the scheme viable we shall need at least
60 members. If we achieve this, the prize
money will be £30, £20 and £10 each month
and subscriptions £2 per month.
I shall assume that all members will
wish to continue. Potential new members
please contact me before January 10th 2014
for further information on 01823 672201.
I am unable to commit myself to continue to run the scheme; therefore the PCC is
appealing for someone to come forward and
take over.
I would like to thank all members for
their loyal support to the Church and to me.
12. Defibrillator - The Red Cross had recommended which machine to purchase and the
Chairman had approached the company concerned. It was agreed to purchase a recertified one that could be placed on an outside
wall in an easily accessible location. In addition the Council approved the purchase of
paediatric paddles to be used with the defibrillator.
The Chairman agreed to approach the
SCA about possible siting. Estimated total
expenditure would be in the region of £1400
(plus VAT, which would be recoverable).
The Clerk reminded the Council that a generous donation had been received towards this
cost, and it was hoped that others would be
forthcoming. (Sec’s note: two further donations were received after the meeting bringing
the donated total to £1025).
13. Correspondence - The Clerk received
notification from Brendon Energy that they
are no longer intending to pursue their community wind power project.
Peggy Wotton (Hon. Sec. to P.C.C.)
14. Any Other Business - The clerk proposed
the dates for the 2014 meetings. They were
accepted by the Council and would be placed
on the website. The AGM and Annual Parish
Meeting dates will be agreed at the next meeting.

Stawley Rural Community Initiative
The Lunch Club needs a new chef as Andrew Burt has given up. Paul from The Globe
is going to do the next one. CN suggested a
former chef from the Globe who also might be
interested. The people who assess the group
for next year’s grant will be coming shortly.
Delia Harling has taken over the organisation
of the talks.
Minutes of meeting, 21st October 2013 at
Swallows Linney, Ashbrittle
Present Mike Parkinson, Julia Swan, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Embleton, Cilla Newsom,
John Hannon.
Classes Art is not being well supported at the
moment, so classes have stopped for the time
being, but Tai Chi is still popular.
Apologies Justin Roxburgh, Jo Hartas, Gary
Wilkins.
Minutes of last meeting, read, agreed and
signed.
Accounts. The annual accounts were discussed. The RCI has had no income or expenses in the last year, the Active Living account is fine and there is some Youth Club
money in the account.
Matters arising: Affordable housing. There
is a meeting tonight.
Recipe book no figures yet, ET to ask GW if
he has spoken to the publishers and if there is
a possibility of getting it ready for Christmas
Welcome Pack MP had a meeting with Martin Perry and James Luard after JL had offered
to change the title to the community welcome
pack, but the cover still showed the churches.
Also, he offered to have them kept at the shop
for free distribution to new residents and for
sale to others. The committee is still wanting
to add a map of all the footpaths. A map of the
definitive paths is available from Taunton
Deane and then the permissive paths could be
added to it.
It was suggested that all these things
could go onto a website as RCI information.
JH will get a map and ask members to add
paths that they know. It was resolved to leave
JL to distribute his welcome pack and make
the website an additional source of information for the whole community. Publicity of
the website should be in other ways as well as
the Parish News. Put more information onto
the website as it comes available so that it can
be a useful reference point for everyone.
On Your Bike The village cycle group had
applied to the PC for funding for bikes to lend
to members of the group. It was agreed that
they really need to get funding for some second hand bikes suitable for lending to men
and women, perhaps from the charity On Your
Bike. CN offered a man’s bike which would
be available to borrow.
Website MP talked to Dave Sheen about the
RCI website which is a page attached to Wiveliscombe PC website. MP read out his draft
for putting on the site. There is no charge for
this.
Reports:
Oil Group. The group is growing, with people joining at each delivery. The last few deliveries have been with different companies.
Judy Milne is using several comparison sites
to get the best price.
Youth Club CN has lots of club information
and policies. JH suggested that it would be
good to make an inventory of property for the
RCI records and to give it to the Pavilion
committee for insurance purposes. It was
thought that it would be good to keep £400 for
starting a new club sometime in the future
leaving £220 to put towards other projects.
There has been an idea about young people
Active Living. ET reported the school are
keen to have another bicycle training session
for the older children. They will need more
volunteers, JH suggested that she talk to
David Stirzaker at the school to see if some
parents will help.

asking older people about their teapots, perhaps as a joint RCI / Ashbrittle Arts project.
Holcombe Court - a very
special house
Any Other Business. JS reminded the committee about Easyfundraising, she will send
out the details again.
Seventeen curious members of the Lunch
Club were given an opportunity to have a tour
of Holcombe Court provided by the owner
himself, Mr Nigel Wiggins.
The house is Tudor in origin with Victorian additions, has always been in private
ownership and is very rarely open to the public. We were in for a rare treat. None of us
had ever been there before.
We quickly discovered this house is
very special. Mr Wiggins is passionate about
it and it shows. Every detail has been meticulously attended to, or plans are still in progress. Modern woodwork, plaster work, and
building techniques blended with the original.
Only the highest standards of restoration are
acceptable. The blend of old and new spilled
over into wonderful paintings, sculptures,
metal work and cabinet making. The work of
local crafts people and creative friends of the
owner were much in evidence. Not only were
individual items blended together but also
whole rooms. We were shown rooms restored
to their original appearance alongside dazzling
modern kitchens and bathrooms.
Date of next meeting; Monday 13th January
2014 at The Croft, Appley at 7.30pm
ASHBRITTLE ARTS
Utton is Churchill
THEATRICAL chameleon Pip Utton explores another charismatic historical figure in
his show Churchill, which Take Art is bringing to Ashbrittle Village Hall on Friday
21st February 2014 at 7.30.
Utton, the Frome-based actor whose
solo shows have brought Dickens, Chaplin
Hitler and Francis Bacon to entertain audiences all over the country brings Churchill
down from his plinth in Parliament Square to
reminisce about his life and his achievements.
Big Ben chimes and strikes thirteen – a
magical signal for the statue of the great
statesman to come to life for just an hour, to
indulge himself in three of his greatest pleasures, a glass of scotch a cigar and listening to
himself talk.
Work for future generations
Mr Wiggins sees his ownership of Holcombe
Court not only as a home for himself and his
daughter, but also as an opportunity to make
his mark on an historical building which will
be passed to future generations. His enthusiasm is infectious and the generous refreshments and quick unscheduled tour of the gardens left us all feeling that we wanted to wish
him well.
Delia Harling
“History will be kind to me,” he says, “for I
intend to write it.”
This is not yet another attempt to assess
Churchill’s historical or political importance.
It is simply seventy delightful minutes in the
company of a man whose life spanned two
centuries, from Victorian England and the
great British Empire to the post-war austerity
and declining power of the 1950s.

New ideas welcomed
We have made the website simple, so that it is
easy to keep up to date, but we welcome ideas
for other features and especially news and
links from local organisations. Please help us
to serve you better, by feeding us information
and comment and making the website a really
useful tool for Stawley Parish.
I know that many will respond to this question
with a yawn - and a comment 'how boring!' I
am also well aware that parish councils have a
reputation for being just that - boring. Well,
we would like to change that perception, make
the Council more interesting, accessible and
'user friendly' by providing up to date information, news, comment and useful links to
other websites.
We are particularly keen that younger
members of our Parish should find the website
of use - so ideas are most welcome!
Clive Wall, Chairman
Ashbrittle Cricket 100 Club draw
So, what will you find on our website?
First, who your councillors are, what they
look like and how to contact them.
Then, the boring stuff - minutes of recent meetings. But, now you can check the
latest minutes, out just days after each meeting, instead of waiting nearly a month for the
next issue of the Parish News.

Website links
My favourite, so far, is the photograph of a
pothole, which takes you straight to the Taunton Deane web page for reporting potholes
and other road problems. Anyone who has
tried to do this direct will know the difficulties
of navigating to that page, so this is a great
help. It makes reporting problems really easy
- one click and you are there!
Another link takes you straight to the
Taunton Deane Planning Application web
page, where you can check out details of any
current or past applications, view comments
made and read approval documents and conditions. Our website also has a list of current

Other useful links will be added - any

The New Surgery
The meeting, as usual, began with the reports
and future items. We were then treated to a
hands-on evening when we all began to make
a choir boy as a decoration for our Christmas
Cake.
We were each handed a ‘head’ and then
we made the body, shoes, the cassock and finally the ruff and the surplus. It was great fun
and we all went home with a lovely decoration thanks to the guidance and patience of
Doreen Orton. Doreen makes lots of sugar
paste decorations for cakes and she brought
some of them with her so we knew what could
be achieved with practice.
Thank you Doreen for an interesting and
very enjoyable evening.
Our next meeting is our Christmas Dinner Party and we shall all be meeting at the
‘Martlett’.at 7.00pm.
In January we begin with A Beetle
Drive – with a difference, at 2.00pm at Bathealton Village Hall.
After many months of waiting we are delighted to inform you that the Lister House GP
Surgery will finally be moving to our new
premises at Croft Way on 2nd December
2013. We are very excited about the opportunities this new building will give us to further
enhance the services we provide to the community of Wiveliscombe. For your information the new address will be: Lister House
Surgery, Lister House, Croft Way, Wiveliscombe TA4 2BF. Telephone / fax numbers, email address and website will remain
unchanged.
Please bear with us during any teething
problems with the new surgery, especially on
the first day, Monday 2nd December
2013. Any short term inconvenience will
hopefully be outweighed by a shiny new surgery building that will continue to serve the
people of Wiveliscombe and area well into the
21st Century.
The Lister House Surgery
We wish you all a Happy Christmas and a
Good New Year.

TAKE ART – WINTER PROGRAMME 2014
MIRANDA SYKES & REX PRESTON
APPLEY PAVILION
8.00 pm on SATURDAY 8th FEBRUARY 2014
Adults £8 - Children Under 16 £5
In the space of 2 short years, Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston have emerged to become one of the
most sought after duos on the English folk & roots scene. The striking combination of the flame
headed double bass player & virtuoso mandolin player create music that Folk Roots say is:
“A musical partnership made in heaven. Scintillating, sensitive and brilliant!”
Well known for the last 8 years as a central component of Show of Hands, Miranda has an exquisite and spine-tingling voice, whilst Rex, with his exuberant and flamboyant playing style, has
built a reputation as one of the finest mandolin players in the UK. The duo are embarking on an
extensive tour of the British Isles in support of their arresting new CD “Sing A Full Song”.

PARISH NEWS DETAILS
The Editors and the next issue deadline date are on the back cover. Please send items for publication to the Editors in good time
to ensure publication. There is only a short time between the deadline and the printing of the Parish News and late items may not
be included. We are pleased to receive items in any form (typed, in long hand, on disk or by e-mail). Naturally, we prefer items by
e-mail [email protected] when they should be in Microsoft 'Word' format, as this saves a great deal of typing!
Our advertising rates are £1 per month for a small box, £2.50 for a quarter page, £5 for a half page and £10 for a whole page
Advertising for community events, charity and church fundraising events in our area are normally carried free of charge. Occasional one-off adverts from residents in our area seeking to sell or buy an article or seeking to acquire or offer a service are also
carried free of charge. In all cases the style, layout and size allocated to an advert is at the discretion of the Editors.
