President’s Message
Dear Fellow Members,
“Forty Good Men” joined together to create this
prestigious Club 150 years ago in 1865. Year-long,
in honour of our Club’s 150th anniversary, some
terrific events and promotions have been presented
for Members to enjoy, including opera, country music,
a family carnival, F&B promotions, and more, at the
amazing price of $18.65—our founding year. And while
these offerings have been enjoyed by a few thousand
of you, this month we turn the focus beyond our Club
walls, to help those in need.
Collectively, we form a privileged community, and in
a comparative sense, we are indeed, a very fortunate
group. So while more excellent festivities will continue
to be rolled out for the remainder of the year, I would
like to highlight a few special anniversary events very
dear to me.
As many of you
know, 9 October
marks
Children’s
Day. To celebrate
this, we plan to
welcome over a
hundred
orphans

special
guests
of
the
Tanglin Club, and
we will treat them
to warm Tanglin
hospitality, at a
poolside carnival,
replete with all the
usual trimmings—magicians, jugglers, cotton candy,
ice cream, BBQ eats, a giant inflatable in the pool,
and more. To ensure its success, I am seeking the
kind assistance of Members to join us as volunteers,
to create a family-like atmosphere to show these
children that Tanglin cares. If you are available to
assist that afternoon please write Tina, at tina.supri@
tanglin-club.org.sg. I sincerely hope to be joined by
dozens of you to create some much needed magic for
these young orphans.
On 9 October, we are debuting The Tanglin Tree Musical,
especially composed by John Sharpley for our 150 th
anniversary, with lyrics by our fellow Member Robert
Yeo. The following month, we will be hosting a Black
Tie Charity Dinner, that will include The Tanglin Tree
Musical performance, and a special Guest of Honour.
That evening we will also be hosting an official tree
planting ceremony to mirror the one we did in 1990
in celebration of our 125th year. A sumptuous dinner
will be prepared by Guest Chef Esmeraldo Oterelo
and our Executive Chef Louis Tay. I am calling upon
your generosity to help us raise funds for our adopted
charity, The Dover Hospice.
2
I am humbled and
inspired
by
the
generous efforts of our
Members earlier this
year. The Golf Section,
as reported previously,
raised about $40,000 for
the Special Olympics,
at their 150th Charity
Golf Tournament. This
is in addition to the compassion of the Dance Section,
which raised over $10,000 in support of Celebral
Palsy Alliance Singapore. National Day also saw us
host a bazaar, with proceeds directed to Singapore
Association of Women Lawyers. I am calling on your
support to join me to stimulate the necessary support
for these two special events to have maximum impact,
befitting of our prestigious and rich heritage.
Focus Groups
August saw us host our first Member dinner dialogue
session in the Churchill Room. It was an insightful
discussion and we now look forward to the next one
in September, with a view to making Tanglin an even
better Club. If this is of interest to you, please do let
Josie know by emailing her at [email protected].
Strategic Planning
Last issue, I shared with you that we are undertaking
a Gross Floor Area (GFA) audit. While the audit
progresses, as previously shared, we are exploring
the possibility of creating more guest rooms in the
former spa, where the Library is currently located.
Once these reviews are complete, we will share the
information with you. Please stay tuned.
Half Time
Do take the time to familiarise yourself with our financial
progress and standing. The end of July marked the close
of our sixth month and our Treasurer, David Palmer,
has prepared an informative 6-month summary on
pages 4–5.
As the Club moves from strength to strength, I look
forward to your support at our upcoming charitable
events. Giving back to our community is something
The Tanglin Club and all its Members can be proud of.

WITH MR TRAVIS LEMM
17 September 2015, Churchill Room, 7.30pm
$98 Member | $118 Guest
Travis Lemm came to wine via food. His career began in his hometown of
Adelaide, where he was the Assistant Manager of fine dining restaurant
Grange Jetty, before going on to manage To Relish in Hyde Park. Food
and wine pairing was the bridge that would deliver him to winemaking,
never to look back. While completing his Bachelor of Agricultural Science
(Oenology) degree at the University of Adelaide, Travis worked part-time
in the Adelaide Hills. Travis started off selling wine at Shaw + Smith
through their innovative tutored wine tastings; before working as a cellar
hand at Normans. Having fallen for Voyager Estate’s wines during his restaurant days, Travis travelled to
Western Australia in the hope of securing a position with a leading Chardonnay producer. A week after his
final exam in 2004, Travis started at Voyager Estate as Asistant Winemaker under the tutelage of then-Chief
Winemaker, Cliff Royle. Within five years, he’d worked his way to Winery Manager, and couldn’t be more
excited about what lies ahead for the winery.

season 2 of tanglin club choir reopens
After a long vacation break, the Choir re-started on the 15th
of July. It was good to see familiar faces again at our first
practice session. To be quite honest I found the Choir break a
wee bit too long as I very much missed our singing sessions
for the following reasons.
The enjoyable stimulation to my brain had stopped short
suddenly.
The satisfaction of learning something new with each practice
session with our Choir Master Albert Tay had also taken an
abrupt break for the time being.
Missed also was the camaraderie experienced amongst our
Choir members each time we get together just for the simple
joy of singing.
When singing at especial Events with my fellow Choristers, I
cannot help but feel a special sense of pride and satisfaction
that I am doing something constructive for our Club and for
our members.
These are some of the positive things that joining the Choir
has brought into my life. Yes! I am glad that vacation time is
over and we are back in harness albeit, not quite as yet in
full force.
The Tanglin Club Choristers are ready to take on the
challenges for the second half of 2015. We are now hard at
work preparing for performances in October, our participation
in the Musical production of Tanglin Tree for the 150th
Anniversary of the Club, and our much-anticipated Carol
singing for the Christmas Tree Lighting Event in November.
Meanwhile, you may like to know that our Choir sings a variety
of music genres - Contemporary Upbeat, Tunes from the 70’s,
Musicals, Evergreens, Contemporary Christian, Contemporary
Chinese - and I am sure there is something in these you will
enjoy.
We welcome you to join our open sessions for Members, free
of charge, which are held on the last Wednesday of each new
Calendar month, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Theaterette.
We encourage you to join us for an evening of singing and

BATTLE OF THE TITANS
The HKPT, after its strong showing with Manning, was

SOCIAL
It was not all battles on the lawn bowl green. The TC

lawn bowlers. They were not strangers to one another.
Most of the teams and bowlers have bowled in many
other social and competitive games before in Perth,
Melbourne, Bangkok, Kota Kinabalu, and Hong Kong.
The bowlers had great fun, shared camaraderie, and
were full of praise for the good organisation and

event both memorable and enjoyable.
There was plenty to eat and drink during the four-day
tournament. And the event culminated with our grand
final evening’s buffet dinner and dance, accompanied
by our weekend music quartet Locomotion Band.
There were many words of thanks and appreciation;
but it was unanimous—fellow bowlers want such annual
events to be organised. This is truly the happy spirit

At SICC, the less than loquacious team of Rob Chen

EIGHT STRIKES IN A ROW!
We managed to get in a good bowling session on 9 July
at Raffles Town Club. MC, Nancy, and Josephine were
joined by a young man, Leow Tian Ahn, who had been
absent for a time due to school commitments. Those of
us who were new to the venue found it a delightfully
pleasant place, with a quiet atmosphere and friendly
bowling attendants. Teenager Tian Ahn impressed
everyone with his energetic bowling techniques and his
spectacular Eight-Bagger, which for the uninitiated, is
a succession of eight strikes in a row! He is definitely
material for the Annual TANS Competition.
MC Cheong had a run, which made us all laugh with
great mirth. A mislaid bowling pin was in the gutter and
MC’s bowling ball clunked into the gutter, hit the mislaid
pin and bounced back onto the lane to hit a spare. Even
the bowling attendant saw the unusual, but fascinating,
turn of events. MC’s bowling angel must have been
working overtime! The next bowling session is on 10

BECOMING STEVE JOBS: HOW A RECKLESS UPSTART
BECAME A VISIONARY LEADER
by Brent Schlender
Becoming Steve Jobs answers the central question about the life and career of the Apple cofounder and CEO: how did a young man so reckless and arrogant that he was exiled from the
company he founded become the most effective visionary business leader of our time?
Drawing on extensive interviews, many of which have never seen the light of day, Schlender
and Tetzeli overturn the conventional view of Steve Jobs as half-genius, half jerk, presenting
a portrait of him that is far more nuanced and intimate than previous biographies. A rich and
revealing account that will change the way we view Jobs, Becoming Steve Jobs shows us how
one of the most colourful and compelling figures of our times created one of the most valuable
and beloved companies on the planet.

THE IMITATION GAME (2014)
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, and Matthew Goode
Directed by Morten Tyldum
During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst, and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict
Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of “gross indecency,”
an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality—little did officials know, they
were actually incrimminating the pioneer of modern day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess
companions, and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany’s World War II
Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, THE IMITATION GAME follows a genius who
under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives.
