Member’s
My entire game could
probably use improvement right now, but I
know for sure I need
help getting off the tee.
You see, I’ve recently
returned from Iraq after a yearlong deployment,
and before I pick up the clubs again and start
some bad habits, I want to get some lessons to
help me from the start.
I just ordered my Golf Card and was looking at
the Member Benefits when I saw Member’s Tee.
This is just what I need to get back on the links
and start enjoying golf again. Before getting
deployed to Iraq, I was a 12 handicap and have
been playing for about five years.
This would be great for me. I hope I get lucky
enough for the free private lessons.
TEE
Henry Thomas, Marietta, Georgia
Master Sergeant, Army National Guard
Clinton, North Carolina
Hank has not played since returning from Iraq and has been to the
range only twice. He said he hit a lot of shots thin. To help get him
back on the right track, we arranged for a lesson with Bern Coulter,
the teaching pro at Golf Card affiliate Magnolia Greens Golf
Plantation in Wilmington, North Carolina. Though Hank was looking for help getting off the tee, Bern evaluated Hank’s swing for iron
shots as well.
Bern explained to Hank that after a year’s layoff he should concentrate on his swing mechanics, try to enjoy the game again and get
back to and possibly improve on his 12 handicap.
7,000 Members Sign Up to Test Bridgestone Balls
A chance to receive and test a FREE two-ball sleeve of Bridgestone
balls attracted a record 7,000 members to sign up and participate. This
exclusive benefit of Golf Card membership is available to members
who register either by sending in a form included in their membership
packages or via the Web site www.golfcard.com.
With the Bridgestone test, members were sent either the Tour B330 or
Precept models based on their handicap. They were then asked to test
the balls and provide feedback through a special feedback section on
the Bridgestone Golf web site.
In addition, any Golf Card member testing the
Tour B330 and responding via the Bridgestone
web site is entered to win a
Bridgestone J33R driver
through a random drawing,
and any member testing and
Bern stressed three essential basics:
1. grip and grip pressure
2. swinging arms correctly
3. weight shift, something that exists in any sport that includes a
“stick and a ball,” like baseball, hockey and tennis
Bern explained the grip fundamentals — palms parallel to each other
— something Hank was not doing. He changed Hank’s grip slightly to
get to a better position. Hank worked on his grip for a while until he
became comfortable with the adjustments. (continued on p. 7)
providing feedback on the Precept model was eligible to win a Precept
EC Fuel Driver. Just a reminder to any member who has not yet
responded, the deadline is July 30 to be entered in the driver drawings.
Since the testing is continuing through July 30, results are unknown at
this time.
To sign up for future product testing (as manufacturers participate), go to
www.golfcard.com/benefits and click on the product testing form link.

Fabulous Golf in the Catskills
I
had the good fortune to spend a few days in the Catskill
Mountains this spring while playing in our first annual Catskill
Golf Card Member–Guest Golf Tournament. For those of you
who haven’t played golf in this area, I strongly encourage you to
plan a trip sometime soon. The golf is plentiful, wonderful and
affordable. And the best news is that you can save even more with
your Golf Card membership.

I had the pleasure to play Grossinger Country Club with Golf
Traveler Editor Ken Cohen as our host. Ken grew up playing
Grossinger’s and is a top amateur golfer in this region. I can say without hesitation that Grossinger’s is a must-play course, if you are ever in
the area. The course would hold its own with many of the top private clubs
in the New York metropolitan area in terms of its layout and scenic beauty. It was one of the most
memorable courses I have played in quite some time. So be sure to treat yourself to a round at
Grossinger’s sometime soon. I guarantee it will be unforgettable.
About 25 miles west of Grossinger’s stands Villa Roma Country Club, the site of the Golf Card
tournament. We sold out the tournament at 140 players, and despite threatening clouds the weather
held out, and we enjoyed a great round of golf. Villa Roma’s renowned cuisine at the awards banquet
dinner was as brilliant as the golf. See the tournament photos and write-up on pages 10 and 11 of
this issue. As with Grossinger’s, be sure to make time to play Villa Roma. It’s a fun and very scenic
course, and head pro Matt Kleiner will make sure you enjoy a great round of golf.

The Real Thing for Rust
Shank You Very Much
I have always had a rust problem on my Scotty
Cameron Newport putter, no matter how often
I wiped it on a wet day, rust would show up. I
used to scrub away with Brasso and an old
toothbrush. While playing at Bears Best in Las
Vegas, I mentioned this to our caddie, Scott
Giroux and he suggested I soak it overnight in
Coke or Pepsi. I was amazed at the result — no
rust and it looked like new. I also did the same to my
favorite 20-year-old sand wedge and it came out looking great as well.
So if any of you have a rust problem, try this. You will be in awe.
I will describe my first hole in one. It was a hot day, and two friends of
mine and I were playing in a three-man scramble at Metropolis Country
Club in Illinois. The sixth hole is a tricky little 110-yard hole. At that
time, I had the shanks so bad, that I could not hit an iron. Well, anyway, I told my group that I would hit first, as I could not help on this
hole. I took out a 5 iron, swung, and the ball went into the hole.
Typically, this is a wedge, maybe a 9 iron, if the wind is blowing. Now,
the good part. My name came out in the local paper, and I had more
than one person call me about the shot. However, everyone would ask
“you did not hit a five-iron, did you?” I would politely, say, yes, and
“I hit it good.”

(Continued from cover)
Before
Before — Hank’s outside-in-swing path and errant shots are caused by
three major problems in his swing as seen in the photos here: ➊ After a
yearlong hiatus from the game, Hank’s grip and address position lapsed
into some bad habits. Here, you can see his stance is too closed, his right
finger is too extended down the shaft, his palms aren’t facing each other and
his chin is a little low. ❷ Hank’s backswing was a little inside and abbreviated, forcing his elbow to fly outside and his weight shift to fall short of getting
completely to his right side.
After
Next, Bern worked on Hank’s arm swing, trying to keep his
arms (specifically his elbows) close to each other on both the
backswing and the follow-through. Hank had a tendency to
open up his arms (left elbow flying out) on his follow-through.
This flying out produced a shortening of his swing at impact,
which resulted in topped or thin shots.
After — ➊ Hank’s grip is much better here — notice how his right forefinger is wrapped around the shaft, not extending down it. Also his
stance seems to be more square. ❷ As Bern instructed, Hank is keeping
his right elbow close to his body on the downswing, which will also help him
rotate the club through at impact. ❸ Hank is making a full turn here, properly shifting his weight to his right side. Also, notice how his right elbow is
not flying out. ❹ To stop hitting thin shots with his irons, Hank worked on
making a descending blow with his irons and taking a small divot on his
practice swings.
➊
❷
Hank’s thin shots were also attributable to his position at
impact — more often than not, he kept his clubface square to
open during impact and follow-through, instead of square to
closed. In other
words, he was not
releasing the club
properly through
the ball and tending to hold onto
the shot too long.
Bern suggested that Hank try to take a small divot on his practice swings, something he wasn’t doing.
Member’s
TEE
Finally, Bern worked with Hank on his swing arc, specifically
where the low point should be relative to his irons versus his
driver. For example, he should try to hit his irons with a
descending blow while hitting his driver on the upswing. Hank
immediately responded to this tip, hitting his iron shots much
more crisply and hitting his driver with a higher flight pattern.
Follow-Up: Big Improvement
Ben Bruce, the first recipient of a free lesson through our
exclusive Member’s Tee benefit, reports remarkable
progress since his lesson with Heath Davis of Golf Card
affiliate Chestatee Golf Club in Marietta, Ga.
❸
❹
The 80-year-old Bruce, who came to Davis with a 20 handicap, said that he has equaled or bettered his age four times
since the lesson and has lowered his handicap index to
14.3. His score of 80 at his home course of Canterbury Golf
Club on April 20 was the first time he ever shot his age. He
said the round came the day after he received the Spring
2005 issue of Golf Traveler featuring his lesson in the
“Members Tee” section.
“I did have to birdie the 18th hole to get the 80, but I didn't
realize that until the round was over or I'm sure I would have
choked,” said Bruce, who credits Davis with this “dramatic”
improvement in his game. “But now I have to give more
strokes to my buddies!” reminds Bruce.
MEMBER’S TEE is a new benefit that allows Golf Card members to write in with
swing problems or flaws. We will review these submissions and choose one to be
addressed in each issue of Golf Traveler. It’s our intention to have experienced
PGA professionals at Golf Card–affiliated courses provide personal, step-by-step
lessons — with detailed photos — to help correct the swing problem or flaw.
So if your swing or some aspect of your game is letting you down, simply
e-mail us at [email protected] with the problems you’re experiencing.
Please include a brief description of what your swing tendencies are and what
you’d like to see corrected. We look forward to your submissions and helping in
any way we can.

SPORTS TECH NEWS–2005
New golf club automatically corrects a
bad putt; boosts accuracy by a third.
Protects golfers
four ways.
Senior Pro’s secret weapon
NEW BRANFORD, CT—There’s an
old saw that says golfers drive for
show and putt for dough. That last
part explains why a Senior Pro I know
bought a new putter
literally off the table
while touring a golfclub factory in China.
He dropped his score
his first round with it.
A test among sixteen U. S. golfers
by Charlie Allen who compared it to
their own putters
showed the new club increased their
sink and “gimme” rates by a third, an
improvement that will improve their
scores significantly.
The secret to the putter’s accuracy
is its ability to automatically correct a
matter which of these errors a
golfer commits, within limits,
the rounded face will overcome
it by presenting a hitting surface
to the ball that’s on-target and
bounce-free (see diagrams). The
horizontal curve keeps the ball
on target; the vertical curve
keeps it rolling smoothly. It’s the
only putter that can do this and
my friend bought it on the spot.
I asked him what happens if a
golfer makes a perfect stroke.
“If I make perfect contact,
there’s no need for a correction,
so there is none. The putter
sends the ball dead to the pin
with a smooth roll. The thing is
absolutely ingenious.”
“How well does it aim?” I
asked.
“The long target line across
the top let’s me sight it like a
rifle. The white lines in front and
back of the main target line
make sure I keep the clubhead
flat to the green. That’s critical
on slopes. Sixteen golfers rolled
their putts 25% closer to the cup
with this putter than they did, on
average, with their own. Because
of its flawless delivery, distance
control increases dramatically.”

bad stroke. Even the best professionals on the Tour often turn their putter
slightly at contact and push the ball to
the right, or pull it to the left. In the
“dough” part of golf, it doesn’t take
much of a push or

to roll smoothly,
like a cue ball, to be accurate.
The windfall my friend saw laying
on the table was something he had
never seen before -- a putter that automatically corrects all four of these
errors. Its face is rounded vertically to
correct scoops and chops and horizontally to correct pushes and pulls. No

New club’s scientifically rounded face

putting's four most common errors.
The new putter is due in the U. S.
in about two weeks, thanks to a
small company in Connecticut that
grabbed the distribution rights. The
company says based on tests
among golfers who used it versus
their own putter, a golfer should
cut at least four stokes.
If you want to go for the dough with
a secret weapon, I would get on the
company’s waiting list and call 1-800285-3900 anytime or day or click

You can also mail your name,

face-balanced, stainless-steel shaft,
and comes with a free head cover.
There’s a 30-day guarantee.
One putter costs $99.00; a second
one (for a spouse or friend) is available at wholesale for only $69.00. S/h

Villa Roma Member–Guest Tournament
Villa Roma Country Club — Callicoon, New York • May 24, 2005
Despite cold, raw, wet conditions, 140 Golf Card members and guests turned out for the first Member–Guest tournament held at the four-star Villa
Roma Resort in Callicoon, New York, on May 24. Participants enjoyed the friendly but challenging Villa Roma course as well as the buffet dinner
afterward. Those who had never played the Villa before were already asking when the Golf Card would return there — the scenery, facilities and
service are second-to-none in this part of the western Catskills.
The Golf Card plans to return to the Villa Roma in 2006 but will be coming back close to the area this October when it hosts a Member–Guest
Tournament at Pocono Manor in the Poconos. To register for the Pocono Manor tournament, call the Golf Card Tournament hotline at 877-288-4802.

Steve Grassel, 1920-2005
Started 2nd Grasshopper Club
We regret to report that Steve A. Grassel, credited
with starting the second Grasshopper Club for Golf
Card International, died on May 8 in Shelby, Ohio.
Steve was sales manager at Moorhead Ford for many
years and retired from Sprint. He enjoyed woodworking in addition to golf. He was a member of Golf Card
International from 1976 until his death and started
the Ohio Grasshopper Club — only the second
Grasshopper club in the country at the time. He was
also a charter member of the Police Auxiliary.
Despite less-than-ideal weather conditions,
The Villa Roma Member-Guest attracted a full field of
140 golfers, including Golf Card executive staff, fathers and
sons, husbands and wives, good friends and, most of all,
enthusiastic members who enjoyed the resort’s beautiful
surroundings and first-class service.
“He was a quiet, very nice man, a real gentleman,”
remembers Phyllis Hess, current director of the
Central Ohio Grasshoppers. “One time while playing
in one of my outings in West Virginia, it started to
rain, but Maryalice, Steve's wife and I were hitting
them pretty good in the rain as were Steve and my
husband, Dave. So we kept on playing. We arrived
back at the club house drenched but happy. We have
laughed about that many times. We just hadn't considered quitting.”
Steve was a Navy veteran, having served in Pearl
Harbor and was a lifetime member of American
Legion Post #16, the Liederkranz and St. Peter’s
Catholic Church.

Historic Pocono Manor Inn to Host
Fall Member–Guest Tournament
Pocono Manor East is a Donald Ross classic in the heart of the Pocono Mountains.
Pocono Manor East, one of the few vintage Donald Ross courses in the Golf Card network, will host a Member–Guest Tournament on Tuesday,
October 4. To enter, call the Golf Card Tournament Hotline at 877-288-4802. See the accompanying summary box for tournament format and details.
Relatively short at 6,480 yards, the East Course’s fairways are narrow and hilly, while the greens are on the small side. Grass bunkers add a Scottishlinks flavor common to many of Ross’ early courses. The 77-yard seventh hole might be
the most famous par-three in the Northeast — a dastardly downhill shot that Director of

out of Pocono Manor during the 1950s and ’60s. Many of the game’s legends have played

Located just 90 minutes from New York City, the Pocono Manor Inn is a registered
National Historic District, referred to by local residents as “the grand old lady of the

Sensational Senior Week at High Hampton Inn
One of the highlights of the Golf Card member tournament schedule is the annual Senior Classic, September 18 through 23, at the picturesque
High Hampton Inn in western North Carolina. The High Hampton Inn and Country Club sits majestically on a 1,400-acre mountain estate.
Golfers will bask in the splendid scenery — views that extend for miles and beautiful flower gardens, lakes and wildflowers. George Cobb designed a
short, hilly, very fair course that is as much fun to play as it is to look at.
Golf Card International is again teaming with High Hampton to cosponsor this weeklong
Senior Tournament. An all-inclusive entry fee of $932 per person for two golfers/double
occupancy covers five days of golf, accommodations, meals, prizes, awards, banquets,
reception and gratuities. If you arrive on Sunday, you can play a complimentary practice
round. It’s an unbeatable deal for an unbelievable week.
The golf competition will be played as a combination of individual and team events with
a Hole-In-One Shootout scheduled for Friday, September 23. Every day will be a different
format. There will be awards and prizes in three age divisions: 50–64, 65–74 and 75 and
over.
For more information on the High Hampton Inn, visit www.highhamptoninn.com. To
register for the Senior Golf Classic, call 800-334-2551, extension 116.
