I want to start off with my favorite story of the week . . .
A bar called Drummond’s in Mt Vernon, Texas began construction
on an expansion of their building, hoping to “grow” their business.
In response, the local Southern Baptist Church started a campaign to
block the bar from expanding - petitions, prayers, etc. About a week
before the bar’s grand re-opening, a bolt of lightning struck the bar and
burned it to the ground!
Afterward, the church folks were rather smug - bragging about “the
power of prayer.” The angry bar owner eventually sued the church on
grounds that the church ... “was ultimately responsible for the demise
of his building, through direct actions or indirect means.”
Of course, the church vehemently denied all responsibility or any
connection to the building’s demise.
The judge read carefully through the plaintiff’s complaint and the
defendant’s reply. He then opened the hearing by saying:
“I don’t know how I’m going to decide this, but it appears from the
paperwork that what we have here is a bar owner who now believes
in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that does
not.”

I love to read. However there are a few books I may skip . . .
Recently I stumbled on Bizarre Books, a collection of weird-but-true
book titles, compiled by Russell Ash and Brian Lake. Hard to believe
but these titles were chosen and published in all seriousness. How
would you like to spend your time reading . . .
Why People Move, edited by Jorge Balan (1981)
Animals as Criminals, by J. Brand (1896)
A Pictorial Book of Tongue Coatings, Anonymous (1981)
The Dentist in Art, by Jens Jorgen Pindborg and L. Marvitz (1961)

Nasal Maintenance: Nursing Your Nose Through Troubled Times,
by William Alan Stuart (1983)
Old Age: Its Cause and Prevention, by Sanford Bennett (1912)
Although I have not read any of the books mentioned above, I did
just finish reading “The Killing of Lincoln” by Bill O’Reilly. It was
one of the most interesting and informative books I have ever read.
Anyone that enjoys history will really enjoy “Killing Lincoln.”

After celebrating her 60th year on the throne in style, Britain’s
Queen Elizabeth II can now look forward to breaking some more
records. She is already, at 86, Britain’s oldest monarch (were she to
die now, her son would immediately be the 12th oldest). On Sept. 10,
2015, she would pass Queen Victoria to become the longest-reigning
monarch in British history. To beat Louis XIV (who succeeded to the
throne at the age of 4) for the longest reign in European history, she
would have to live to 98.
Elizabeth II is still going strong, but the maximum human lifespan
isn’t rising at anything like the rate of average life expectancy, which
is rushing upward globally at the rate of about three months a year,
mainly because of progress against premature mortality. Indeed,
we may already have hit some kind of limit for maximum lifespanperhaps because natural selection, with its strict focus on reproductive
success, has no particular need to preserve genes that would keep us
going to 150.
The oldest woman in the world, Besse Cooper, a retired schoolteacher

in Georgia, will be 116 on Aug. 26, according to the Gerontology Research Group, an organization that
studies aging issues. That’s a great age, but it’s a hefty six years short of the record: 122 years and 164 days,
set by Jeanne Calment of France in 1997. In other words, if Mrs. Cooper can get there, Mrs. Calment’s
record will have stood for 21 years; if she can’t, maybe longer.
That’s a long time, considering that there are now nearly a half million centenarians alive in the world.
That number has been going up 7% a year, but the number of those over 115 is not increasing.
If Mrs. Cooper does not take the record, there are only two other 115-year-olds alive to take on the
challenge, and one of them is a man: Jiroemon Kimura, a retired postman from Kyoto. He’s within seven
months of beating the age record for his sex, set by Christian Mortensen, who died in 1998. But Mr. Kimura
is less likely than a woman to make 122, and there are fewer women over 115 today (two) than there were
in 2006 (four) or even 1997 (three [this should be four]).
At least two people died after their 110th birthdays in the 1800s, if you’re willing to trust the birth
certificates [No: one of these did not have a birth certificate]. So the increase of 12 years in maximum life
expectancy during the 20th century was just one-third as large as the increase in average life expectancy
during the period (36 years).
In 2002, James Vaupel of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany,
startled demographers by pointing out that every estimate published of the level at which average life
expectancy would level out has been broken within a few years. Jay Olshansky of the University of Illinois,
however, argues that since 1980 this has no longer been true for already-old people in rich countries like the
U.S.: Official estimates of remaining years of life for a woman aged 65 should be revised downward.
Thanks to healthier lifestyles, more and more people are surviving into old age. But that is not incompatible
with there being a sort of expiration date on human lifespan. Most scientists think the decay of the body
by aging is not itself programmed by genes, but the repair mechanisms that delay decay are. In human
beings, genes that help keep you alive as a parent or even grandparent have had a selective advantage
through helping children thrive, but ones that keep you alive as a great-grandparent-who likely doesn’t
play much of a role in the well-being and survival of great-grandchildren-have probably never contributed
to reproductive success.
In other words, there is perhaps no limit to the number of people who can reach 90 or 100, but getting
more than a handful of people past 120 may never be possible, and 150 is probably unattainable, absent
genetic engineering-even for a monarch.
— Matt Ridley

Even if I had the choice, I am not sure how long I would want to live. I had an uncle that said he
wanted to outlive all of his enemies. I believe he did . . . or at least he came mighty close.

And last of all, Stephen Henry of the Levelland News-Press shared a great story . . .
Two neighbors were constantly arguing over who was the best farmer and who grew the largest crops.
One morning, the first told his son, “Joe, run over to Mr. Pendleton’s house and borrow his crosscut saw.
Tell him I want to cut a watermelon.”
A few minutes later, Joe was back and told his dad, “He said you can’t have it today. Mr. Pendleton says
his wife is using it to cut cucumbers.”

MUSIC LOVERS Joe and Phyllis Mixon enjoying a Mike Gilliam performance at the Manor on June 28.
ROCKIN’ AND ROLLIN’ WITH BILLY WILSON — No one has more fun than
Ruth Wilson Hurley Manor resident Billy Wilson, especially when there’s a party
going on. Billy loves to play the guitar, so when local musician Mike Gilliam
comes to the Manor on Thursday evenings, Billy is always ready to perform.
One of his favorite tunes is the 1958 Chuck Berry hit, Johnny B. Goode, and he’s
quite good at playing it. Billy certainly has fun, and the residents watching his
performances seem to really enjoy him. In the background behind Billy is Mike
Gilliam. Also accompanying Mike was Miguel Cole, out of camera range.
READY TO DANCE! Manor resident Zoa McNutt and Activities Director Letitia
Wright dance to Mike Gilliam’s music.
MANOR RESIDENT Gladys Acosta has fun dancing with Pat Moore during
Mike Gilliam’s music performance.

Office Reveals
Christmas In
July Plan
During a regularly scheduled training meeting Dr. Matt
Hookom and his Custom Dental team were in a discussion
about how many negative things are going on in our world
today. At the meeting Dr. Hookom remarked, “There is not
much we can do about our country’s financial condition,
trying wars and untreatable diseases, but we can help folks
get their minds off of bad times by celebrating Christmas in
July.” He and his team came up with the idea to raise money
for the unsung heroes in their community, the Coalgate Fire
Department. Dr. Hookom said, “What we are going to do is
donate $2 for every patient appointment in July to Coalgate
Fire Department. We have bought a stack of $2.00 bills
and will be putting them into a collection jar in the office.
Once we have finalized all the donations we will donate all
the money to our local unsung heroes at the Coalgate Fire
Department.”
To make the Christmas spirit of giving even better, their
office will be fully decorated; they will be passing out candy
canes (cavity free of course) and will be giving their patients
$2.00 bills to give away to someone else. Dr. Hookom and
the Custom Dental team invite everyone to join in by throwing their donation in the special Christmas In July collection
jar at their office located at 1306 NW Liberty Rd. If you
need help finding the office call (580) 889-7900 and we will
give you directions. All contributors will get a candy cane
and a special gift.
“I hope when folks run across a $2.00 bill it will remind
them that the gift of giving to others is more enjoyable than
any gift you can receive for yourself. We hope it is a great
success and folks see $2.00 bills everywhere and remember
that the spirit of Christmas can be celebrated all year long.”
Dr. Hookom recants.

in the parade without her. Billie will celebrate her 83rd birthday
on August 3.

Lehigh Man To Serve Time For
Domestic and Child Abuse
The Coal County District Court last week handed down a prison
sentence to a Lehigh man for domestic abuse assault and battery
and child abuse by injury.
In a plea agreement made on July 5, Freddie Jo File, 59, pleaded
guilty to the two felony counts that were filed that day. He
was sentenced to four years (two years in prison and two years
suspended) and $500 fine on the domestic abuse charge. He was
given 15 years with the last ten years suspended and a $1,000
fine for felony child abuse by injury. The two sentences will run
concurrently (at the same time).
Coal County sheriff’s deputy Bobby Hatton arrested File the
evening of July 3 after he was dispatched to File’s residence in
Lehigh. According to File’s wife and her 13-year-old daughter, a
physical altercation took place following an argument over pizza.
Both had signs of physical abuse, according to Hatton’s probable
cause affidavit.
Records show that File pleaded guilty to misdemeanor domestic
abuse in Coal County in 2005, at which time he was given a oneyear suspended sentence. He also has prior convictions for larceny,
knowingly concealing stolen property and public intoxication and
has received two deferred sentences in Atoka County for petit
larceny and driving under the influence of drugs.

Science Safari Comes
To The Library
The Coal County Public Library will host Susan Campbell and
the Science Safari on Tuesday, July 17 at 2:00 p.m. for a Summer
Reading Program. Susan will be presenting a program called
“Things that Glow and Spark in the Dark.” For this presentation,
the meeting room will be plunged into darkness so we can view
lots of glow and spark. Susan Campbell is the founder of Science Safari©. Since 1994
she has presented lively, interactive science enrichment programs
for thousands of children in many venues, including schools,
recreation centers, museums, homes, businesses and institutions. A
lifelong lover of science, Susan’s enthusiasm is always contagious
with the children on safari.
This program is made possible by the Institute of Museums and
Library Services, Sonic: America’s Drive-in, and the Oklahoma
Department of Libraries.
