October/November 2014 - Good Shepherd Church in Naperville
Hope of the WORLD B ill Hybels, founding pastor of Willow Creek Community Church, has a saying that I have long held as very true, “The local church is the hope of the world.” A few years ago he extended that thought as he said, “There is nothing like the local church when the local church is working right!” With these words as a backdrop I want to say to our community here at 1310 Shepherd Drive, “Way to be the local church!” The dedication, intensity, compassion, sincerity, and joy while trusting the promises of God are all over this place. You are to be commended for working together and getting it right! AND core to this journey is the exploration into and development of what it means to be generous. This has been a foundational part of this journey that has allowed Good Shepherd, the local church, to be the hope of the world. As a community we have listened to what God has said a generous life looks like and responded. “Generosity is a way of life” is one of our core values, and this community has stepped up big time and has allowed God to help it “work right.” Daylight Saving Time ends November 2nd, remember to turn your clocks back on Saturday The future is filled with God-directed exploration. As teams are being formed to explore how we reach more people through worship, care in extraordinary ways for our children, reach an often-disenfranchised part of our community--those with special needs children, develop the deepening faith life found in small groups, reach those crying out for help with our missions gifts, and stay strong as a body financially while we forward ministry to all ages, there is an exciting journey ahead! I want to encourage you not to sit on the sidelines or become a spectator to this adventure of a lifetime. Respond with joy as you serve, engage in much-needed conversation, and continue to bring your best financial gifts of generosity to the journey. Worship regularly, pray with fervor, and be the local church… the hope of the world! Well done, good and faithful servants… . Now is the time that God calls us to continue the journey. 2 Looking forward to what God has planned in the days to come – -Pastor Greg Worship News Thankful Hearts Our Thanksgiving service will be in the Sanctuary on Wednesday, November 26th at 7:00 pm. Immediately following will be our beloved tradition, “The Pie Thing.” This is an opportunity to share fellowship and a ‘plethora of pies’ in the Activity Center— be there to give thanks and share with each other. Starting on October 5th we will take a thoughtful look at what it means to witness for Jesus. Have you been reluctant to tell others about your faith? Have you wondered how to invite people to a life in Christ? You're not alone! Join us for a four-part series that dispels fear and opens new dialogue. New Small Groups start in October October 5, 12, 19, 26 “Born for This” practical suggestions for being a witness. Featuring “Just Walk Across the Room” a connection to “Born For This” the new sermon series about practical ways to share our faith with others. November 2, 9, 16, 23 “Seasons” the seasons of life and changes that they bring. If you are interested in joining a new small group for this study or if you are in a small group that would like to do this study, please contact Pastor PJ at 630-961-9220 or [email protected]. 3 “If I could only put a face with the name”. Each orientation has three class sessions taught by our pastors and is offered in February, June and October each year. The orientation sessions provide the opportunity to: Build relationships with our pastors, staff and other members. Learn our vision, purpose and core values. Understand our spiritual foundations and how they are lived out in practice and sacrament. Discover what it means to become a member at Good Shepherd: connecting through worship, learning, caring, fellowship and outreach. Engage in the journey of Good Shepherd--where we’ve been and the vision for the future. Following each orientation, new members are celebrated on Recognition Weekend during worship and at a special luncheon. Look for specific dates of the next orientation in the weekly prayer and action guide. For more information regarding the New Member Orientation, please contact Julie Utter at 630-961-9220, ext. 3031 or [email protected]. A little update on Christus: We are building a new website for the church, christuscamden.org. It is up and running but we are in the process of adding content, but we invite you to check it out. We are currently in the middle of our Summer VBS: Hunger Body and Soul. We are bless with an abundance of neighborhood children (we had to stop registration at 48 to fit in the bus and church van for trips). We will have some pictures from the VBS posted next week. I think some are already out on Facebook: Christus Lutheran Church. It is a joy to work with the dedicated all volunteer staff of the VBS, and it’s quite a learning experience for us all as we grow together in Christian community and give up ourselves to one goal, sharing the love of Christ with our neighbors. In addition, we are getting ready to start a new school year at Christus Academy. We graduated all 3 Seniors last June all of whom start college next month. You may wonder why students elect a small Christian family environment to the traditional high school experience. Sometimes that is because their parents are committed to Christian education. More often than not, however, it’s because they or their families have been victims of violence. Most of our students have known someone who died in the streets, some of them have lost siblings and/or parents. I know that Chicago is no stranger to gun violence and it’s devastating aftermath. Many of our students have been bullying and are seeking a safe place to learn. Others have just not done well in the underperforming Camden public schools. The school website is christusacademy.org. We are hoping to rebuild this website soon, so we haven’t updated it this summer. I’ll let you know when the new site is up. God Peace, Pastor Carol Book Christus Lutheran Church, Camden, New Jersey is Pastored by former Good Shepherd member Carol Book. Good Shepherd is a mission partner with Christus. 6 Naperville Area Crop Walk is an ecumenical and interfaith effort of nearly 20 area congregations and organizations to help hungry families in our community and around the world. Y es, the days are getting shorter, the cool breeze of Autumn is in the air, and the Harvest Moon colored our night sky with incredible beauty. Pumpkin Spice Lattes are on the menu board of your local coffee shop, but have you heard your favorite Christmas Carol playing yet on your local radio station? Probably not, but planning is underway for the Operation Christmas Child Ministry held yearly at Good Shepherd Church. Last year our church family packed nearly 700 shoeboxes, and we pray for even more this year!!!! This powerful ministry brings more than shoeboxes filled with hygiene products, school supplies, and toys to children in crisis. It provides joy, smiles, hope, and most of all the Good News of Jesus Christ to children all over the world. This year the National Collection Week is November 17th - 24th. Please be part of this rewarding ministry, and spread God’s love and grace to one of His children. Look for displays in mid-October across from the Connect Center. W hen God calls us to something, it not only transforms the world, it also transforms us. us, too.” What a gift — to be able to give ourselves away and yet somehow not be diminished, but rather grow. Recently, 102 quilts were dedicated during worship services. Most of the quilts, made by our Quilt Ministry team, are destined for distribution by Lutheran World Relief (LWR) and its affiliates to people in need around the world--people affected by war, disasters, and poverty. A quilt may soon be used in a third world hospital, might wrap an orphan, could be used as a sack to carry a refugee’s goods, serve as a baby carrier, may become a sunshade or a warm blanket, or be used as a room divider. Challenged by a growing need for quilts, efforts around the country were doubled in the last year. Some groups met more frequently and invited friends to join. Summer camps joined in, making hundreds of quilts over the course of several weeks. One church invited college students to come make quilts as part of their service projects. “The Quilts you provided show how loving and empathetic you are,” said the officer in charge of the Nunge home for the disabled, near Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. “The residents have been so comforted by the materials you provided. Thank you very much, and may God bless you.” Nearly 490,000 quilts were distributed last year by LWR. Good Shepherd is one of many churches with a Quilt Ministry. God’s love is shown with each quilt, and all this quilting is having a powerful impact on the world. Quilts for USA. Good Shepherd quilters were also touched by a dire need in the USA. Over the years, our Good Shepherd mission teams to Kenya, Guatemala, Honduras and Madagascar have seen quilts in use. How you can help The Quilt Ministry team welcomes helpers on Thursday mornings to tie quilts. No experience is necessary. Another way to help is to sew one or more quilt tops. Finished size should be 60 X 80 inches made of cotton material, any design. Twelve 21-inch squares sewn together is one easy option. Deliver the tops to the church any time. Another way to help is to donate large pieces (1/4 yard or bigger) of cotton fabric. Contact the church office or Linda VanderKolk (630-305-0975) for more information. The impact isn’t just on the other side of the ocean. According to LWR, “Over and over, we’ve heard how the Quilt Campaign transformed your congregations, quilting groups, communities and families. The virus has spread rapidly, and with no approved vaccine and a high fatality rate, the World Health Organization is now calling it "one of the world’s most lethal diseases." Ebola has spread to multiple countries, the hardest hit being Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. In addition to health care, one of the most urgent needs is food. As people in affected areas are quarantined to their homes, towns are being shut down to limit the spread of the disease and people are not able to work, harvest crops or purchase food. The shipment of food has also stopped because people from other countries fear contracting the virus. “We need food,” says the Rev. D. Jensen Seyenkulo, bishop of the Lutheran Church in Liberia. "There is a saying now: 'If we don’t die of Ebola, we will die of starvation.'" You can help. Your gifts to the Ebola Outbreak Response will be used, 100 percent, to assist those impacted by this crisis. Our partners and companion churches have requested our help in responding to the outbreak with food distributions, shipment of personal protective equipment, training health workers, outreach through education about prevention, and construction of an isolation unit at Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing in Liberia. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and its predecessor church have walked with the people of Liberia for more than 150 years. Our long-standing relationship with our companions in Liberia and Sierra Leone provides a strong foundation to respond holistically to the needs of those who are suffering and living with the threat of Ebola. Thank you for your prayers, your partnership and your gifts. Sincerely, Please make checks out to: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Memo line: Ebola Response The Rev. The Manna Group acts on behalf of nonprofit organizations to purchase large numbers of cards from grocery stores, restaurants, department stores and other retailers. Our school buys the cards at a discount and resells them at face value. A purchase of a Manna card channels 2 – 30% of the face value of the card to the preschool! Orders are due on Sunday, October 19th and November 16th. Please include your check made payable to Good Shepherd Lutheran Preschool. Some of the cards are available for cash and carry. The night started with a family tailgate in the parking lot with food, games and fellowship. The band prepared a night of worship with familiar tunes and and a whole set of original songs for a packed out worship center. Pastor Glen taught on the topic of surrender, as it is the album’s theme. The project started as music for the people of Good Shepherd; Hammer and LJ wrote the songs with the congregation in mind. The heart for the album was that God be praised and that we would all surrender day to day to God who offers an abundant life of freedom! “For Your Glory” is available for purchase in the Cornerstone Café and is available on iTunes. Thank you to everyone who supported the wonderful evening and we hope you enjoy the album! *** *** Blessing of the Backpacks” was on August 25th this year. This was a time for students to receive prayer and encouragement for the new school year. Each student was given a tag for his backpack, with a paraphrase of Matthew 28:19-20, reminding them that God is always with them, even at school. Matthew 28:19-20 says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” 18 Fall Bash: Color Fest 2014 was an amazing color celebration of God’s promises on September 7th. In Genesis 9:13 God said, “I will put my rainbow in the clouds to be a sign of my promise to the earth.” Student Ministries FUEL and IGNITE kicked off their year with this proclamation. 268 students attended that evening with over 70 adult volunteers. The values of Good Shepherd were displayed in the student-led worship, community building opportunities, friends invited by the car loads, students and adults engaging in fun activities and God being praised with every color powder blast! Student Ministries vision is to partner with parents to raise students who know, love and serve God. This year we are encouraging ministry small groups and families to embark on a journey into God’s word. Spiritual growth is expected and we find the Bible is the number one catalyst for growth in all of us. Join us as we start a whole new year in learning more about our AWESOME God! FUEL and IGNITE ministries are every Sunday night 6:30-8:15PM. Email Donna Wandke or Laura Jean Martin with questions. [email protected] [email protected] 19 Parents…. At Scrap n Time we have learned that working with pretty paper is great fun, especially if you get to work with friends. Scrap n Time is the place to make cards, sort those many pictures you have in boxes and then put them into albums, or you might like to do quilling, or you may have another paper project you like. We work with all sizes and shapes of scrap papers to make something the family and others will enjoy. You bring your project supplies and lunch and there will be a table for you to work at and someone will bring dessert for all to enjoy. For $5.00 (this goes toward missions the church is involved with), we will supply some tools for anyone to use and you can enjoy the hours of 9 to 4 the second Saturday of each month in rooms 116-117 to work on your project while with friends. Scrap n Time is hosted by Diane Shelbrock and Ronda Burt. You may contact Diane at: [email protected] or Ronda at: [email protected] if you need more information or if you would like to join the fun group. Be warned, some days you may leave with your sides hurting from lots of good laughter. We would love to have you join us.
