MHSFCA NEWSLETTER
October 2011
Noel Dean, 2011 POI Recipient
Noel was nominated for the Power of Influence Award
by the MHSFCA in recognition of the tremendous impact
Coach Dean and the Lowell football program, under his
direction, have had on the community of Lowell and on the
State of Michigan. In addition to putting together a highly
successful football program (three state championships
in eight years: 2002, 2004 and 2009), the Lowell football
team and coach Dean have been awarded our Steve Spicer
Memorial Leadership Award twice: 1999 and 2009 for the
community service they have performed.
Noel Dean’s Lowell football teams have raised
$900,000 in the past four years through their Pink Arrow
Pride Project to support cancer patients and their families.
They are responsible for the building of a Gilda’s Club
home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Gilda’s Clubs “create
welcoming communities of free support for everyone
living with cancer - men, women, teens and children along with their families and friends. The program is an
essential complement to medical care. Gilda’s Clubs provide networking and support groups, workshops, education and social activities.” Coach Dean’s teams have
also given financial support to 75 families to help them
through the active stages of cancer and have put extensive programs in place in their schools to educate students about cancer prevention and understanding.
Thanks to the leadership of Coach Noel Dean,
thousands of Lowell athletes, the community of Lowell, and the State of Michigan have a fine model of
what responsible citizens can accomplish through
community service.
All this community service has not hindered the Red
Arrows’ performance on the field. During Coach Dean’s
15 years at Lowell, they are 153-27, i addition to three
state titles they were also runners-up once and have
made 12 straight playoff appearances (13 total) and won
six league championships.
What does the Power of Influence
Award mean?
from Ron Stolski,Brainerd, MN Head Football Coach
2005 Power of Influence Award recipient
Executive Director Minnesota Football Coaches Association
Being a recipient of the POI was one of the greatest honors
I have ever been privileged to receive. In a real sense, it is
an indication of what, in my mind, makes coaching such
a noble profession in that it is a recognition of contributions over and beyond one’s coaching record. More it is a
reflection of the contribution(s) one can make about life’s
lessons that are so important in our teaching.
Coaching is about relationships. When we choose a
life in coaching, we choose to try to make a difference in
the lives of the people we touch. Being honored with the
POI award, while not something any coach seeks, is a
validation that coaching the “game within the game” is an
important function of the mission all coaches share. The
fact that one of our fraternity is recognized by the AFCA
does not diminish in any way the contributions made by
so many daily, but remains an award of which, singularly,
one can be so very, and rightly, PROUD!

MHSFCA Recruiting Committee Agenda
MHSFCA.com
From Jack Fairly, Recruiting Committee Chair
T
he MHSFCA.com web site continues to evolve.
One of the recent additions has been the inclusion of recruiting information in the form of
“webinars,” recorded presentations dealing
with the recruiting process. There are two “webinars” one
designed to be watched by athletes and their parents, the
other designed for coaches, counselors and AD’s. These
webinars contain up-to-date information and address
misconceptions and misunderstandings about the requirements and process of recruiting. They should be required
viewing by all of us.
Build the Recruiting Fairs & Seminars:
Establish a central location to bring the HS and college
coach together in a setting efficient, cost effective and beneficial to all parties. We can not ask our college coaches to
visit 5-6 high schools a day given the limited time, money
and resources of the DII and DIII schools. The student
athlete will also benefit from more college opportunities.
Over the last three years, our fairs have averaged 16 high
schools represented and 21 colleges.
MHSFCA 2012 Clinic
Kickoff the Clinic Friday morning with the College Head
Coaches Recruiting Panel. Head Coaches Brady Hoke,
Mark Dantonio, Keith Otterbein, Jim Lyall, and Jim Cole
have committed to this very important session. We encourage all coaches to attend.
Also available at MHSFCA.com
The “Prospect Information Form” (http://www.
mhsfca.com/?p=1662) designed by the recruiting committee to collect information on your college prospects
so that we can pass it on to Michigan’s college coaches.
Clicking on the “Coaching Placement” tab at will allow
you to post your résumé, and search for available coaching
and teaching jobs. *We need your email address on file with
your membership information for you to access this potion of
the web site.
Many other resources are available at MHSFCA.com,
be sure to click through the pages on a regular basis.
Prospects
a. Submit all JUNIOR PROSPECTS (Class of 2013) to
Collegiate Sports Data: Collegiate Sports Data is the one
recruiting system used by practically every college across
the country. Every HS Head Coach should put their college prospects on this list. The CSD report is one of the
first sources used to research college prospects. Web site

Wall of Fame Web Site
F
or many many years the MHSFCA has sought a
Hall of Fame, a place to display the accomplishments of our members and of the Association
itself. Two years ago, we made the decision
to create this Hall of Fame online. That has been accomplished. You can find the “Virtual” Hall of Fame by going
to MHSFCA.com and clicking on “Hall of Fame.” Once
on the Virtual Hall of Fame web site, you can review
old newsletters (1973-2006, 2007-2011 newsletters are at
MHSFCA.com), read the biographies of previous all star
game participants, find previous Hall of Fame coaches
including photos and, starting with the class of 2011,
videos of their acceptance speeches. Other award winners
are still being added, i.e. Honorary members, Crowley
Award winners, Leadership Award winners, etc. Check
back regularly.
The virtual Hall of Fame also includes a calendar
(under “Events”) listing MHSFCA meetings and events.
Page 7
Recent additions to the MHSFCA.com web site incudes recruiting webinars
designed for athletes and their parents and for coaches, counselors and AD’s.
b. Submit all college prospects to the MHSFCA Prospects
List: This year will be our first published list of college
prospects for our state. Submit game tapes to the college
coaches for juniors at the end of their JUNIOR season.
College Prep Football Camps
Promote the MHSFCA College Prep Football Camps. The
purpose of these camps is to allow the college coaches to
teach and prepare the student athletes for the DI football
camps. We will be searching for sites for the camps this
fall and have the location/s and information available at
the Recruiting Fairs and at the State Clinic in Kalamazoo.
Recruiting Fairs & Seminars
Fairs: 3:30 - 6:30 PM: Each HS will have a table. Only the
HS coach is allowed to meet the college coaches at this time.
Seminars: 6:00 - 7:00 PM: Free to all student athletes seeking a college athletic career. We encourage ninth graders to
attend, since the most important high school report card
is the first semester, ninth grade year.
Seniors: 7:00 PM: Seniors can meet the college coaches
following the seminar.
Make plans now for your athletes: 9th - 12th grades
to attend a recruiting seminar near you!

Steve Spicer
Leadership Award
The Steve Spicer Memorial Team Leadership Award
was inaugurated in 1999 by the Michigan High School
Football Coaches Association. The award honors
high schools throughout the State of Michigan who
exemplify the legacy left to us by Steve Spicer, the
former head football coach at Fowler High School.
Steve was an outstanding coach, teacher, husband,
father and community leader before his untimely
battle with cancer took him from us. Steve who is a
member of our Football Coaches Hall of Fame, had
an outstanding coaching record along with capturing
a state football title while at Fowler. More importantly
however, is the fact that he was a great role model for
the players he coached and the students he taught.
Nominations Due 15 November should be sent to:

he Michigan High School Football Coaches Association’s Second Annual Clinic will be January 25
and 26, 1974 at Portage Northern High School in
Kalamazoo. The first clinic in 1973 was a huge
success with over 800 in attendance. It is hoped
the clinic in 1974 will be even larger. Clinic Director, Jeff
Smith of East Lansing reported the highlights of the 1974
clinic. Again the agenda of speakers will be primarily
composed of high school coaches. Many of these speakers are drawn from the ranks of the “Regional Coaches
of The Year.” The feeling is that high school coaches tend
to present material more adaptable to the high school
coaching situation.
All the “Regional Coach of The Year” winners will
be awarded beautiful framed foil certificates before noon
at an awards ceremony on Saturday. The Class A, B, C,
and D State “Coaches Of The Year” will be honored and
awarded their trophies at the Saturday noon luncheon.
Free luncheon tickets are given to the first 500 clinic registrants.
Preregistration is $6.00 which entitles one to the clinic
sessions, with the first one starting at 6:30 - 10:15 p.m. on
October 2011
Nomination Forms will be mailed separately to head coaches
Game Date TBD (Late June or early July), 2012
Class A schools may nominate three (3) players
Class B schools may nominate two (2) players
Class C & D schools may nominate one (1) player
Only one player per school may be selected to play in the All Star Game.
When nominating players for the All Star Game coaches should consider the following guidelines:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Only nominate players that you feel have the ability to play with the best in the state.
A player’s “character” is essential. Nominate players who will reflect positively on your school and on your community.
BEFORE NOMINATING A PLAYER, check with him to be sure that, if selected, he will play in the game.
Do NOT nominate players who are considering the service academies.
If you have a player(s) deserving of this honor please take the time to fill out the nomination form (mailed in a separate package) and return it to Gus Kapolka before December 15. *Do not send video with the nomination form! (All Star Coaches will
request film at a later date.)
Players selected to play in the All Star Game will be required to submit all materials relative to participation (physicals, program
materials, information sheets, etc.), by MARCH 15 or they may be replaced by an alternate at their position.

East Moves to 3 Game Lead in 31 year Series
After 1st Ever Game at CMU
by Gus Kapolka, All Star Chair
For complete
stats for the 2011
All Star Game:
T
he 31st installment of the MHSFCA All Star Game saw the East All Stars win in
an exciting game. The 31st MHSFCA All Star Game was an enjoyable experience for the coaches, players, and support staff who spent a week preparing.
I would like to congratulate both teams for a well played game, and
congratulate the East All Stars for their victory. Both coaching staffs did a tremendous
job preparing throughout the year for the game, and their conduct during the week
was exemplary. I would also like to thank all MHSFCA regional directors, and All Star
Committee members who donated their time to make the game possible: Troy Nezki,
Tim Parker, and Craig Healy.
I would also like to thank CMU and head coach Dan Enos for hosting this year’s
game.
