A FAITH-BASED MINISTRY
Independent Living Assisted Living Skilled Nursing Intergenerational Center (Adult Day/Child Learning)
The Benefits of Recreation
The healthcare needs of our residents are our priority. Medical disorders of older adults are diverse, and may affect functioning in physical, cognitive, psychiatric and psychosocial
areas. Activity interventions can address restoration of functions and reductions of health risks and psychosocial health
concerns. Interventions may include: fitness, reality orientation, sensory stimulation, socialization, self expression, various daily living activities and health and lifestyle education.
Also included are music, worship, special interests, clubs
outings and themed events. The expected outcomes from
these interventions include: improvements in physical health,
improvements in cognitive functioning, improvements in
psychosocial well-being, and reduced levels of depression.
The role of recreation is to assist in the building of relationships between residents, staff and the community, providing
an escape from daily routines and worries, and to promote
anticipations of the future.
Next time you see a bingo game, being played, keep in mind
the many health benefits that this single game can provide:
Socialization (talking with peers), exercise (reaching with
arms to cover a number), memory (only two more numbers
and I win), cognition (no talking during the game I have to
concentrate), psychosocial well-being ( I won!), self expression (I didn’t win!), and nutrition ( snacks are always provided at bingo!) Next time the activity staff extend an invitation to the bingo game, take a chance, try it and see how you
feel.
Pictured above is Alexi Matthews enjoying a Bingo
game with her Grandmother, resident Dawna Bond.

Another Form of Service by ―One of Our Very Own!‖
Nick Mayo is one of our Dietary Hosts who is also an Active Reserve Specialist in the Army Reserves. Nick
has a philosophy that he lives by that is to be applauded and commended which goes beyond his duties as an
Army Reserve Specialist. Often we think that only the clergy are people who serve others and minister to
whomever is in their midst. Not so— We all minister, in a variety of ways, whenever we listen, intently, to
someone else in a compassionate way. That is truly making your presence known to that person no matter what
you do for a living. Nick’s ministry is something that is instilled in him on an everyday basis. Nick’s many responsibilities and duties, have awarded him numerous accolades. Nick’s belief in God is what keeps Nick going, no matter what comes his way with his military combat training. When I was interviewing Nick he told
me that when things get tough he always has his faith to rely on even when he is completing major tasks. Some
of Nick’s major tasks and accomplishments have been competing in his platoon’s ―Warrior of the Year‖ Event.
Nick Mayo won this recognition by carrying 6o pounds of gear, for the physical aspect of this event, through
various weather conditions. Nick also had to put, into practice, his first aid combat life saving skills. While
doing all of this Nick kept up the lines of communication, open, by using his radio whenever necessary. This
whole event is based on Nick’s cumulative learning throughout all of his training.
Nick’s personal beliefs and values, that were shared with me, are ―When things get rough it is God and my
Bible that keep me going.‖ Nick leads by example. Nick believes that you lead by your actions and your commitment to what you are called to do for others. Nick lives by these ―Warrior Ethics‖ of, ―I will never quit. I
will never leave a fallen comrade. I will never accept defeat.‖ Nick always places his mission, in The Army
Reserves, first. When it comes to women, in the Army Reserves, Nick has high regard and respect for women
in the military. Nick said to me, during our interview, ―Some of the best people I serve with are women.‖ That
unto itself shows an all inclusiveness of recognizing that we are all ONE, side by side, living out our values
and commitment to one’s country and to each other. Nick does this, everyday, whether he is the Dietary Host
or the highly recognized ―Warrior of the Year!‖ Go forth, Young Man, with God’s Blessings….

This winter and spring we enjoyed our time indoors with several intergenerational activities with local
schools and churches visiting at Christmas. We also enjoyed a ladies ―spa day‖ with Mary Kay facials and
hand treatments. We rang in the New Year with a big party and entertainment and even watched the Super
Bowl and had a tailgate party! Below are some pictures highlighting the events.
