“Respect Ourselves, Respect Others, Respect Our Environment”
During the last school holiday myself and a number of our Board of Trustees
attended the NZSTA Annual conference.
Our school has a clear philosophy that we are all learners, not only the
students but the staff, leadership team, Principal and us the BOT.
We are a Board that is committed to developing our own knowledge of
School governance and in doing this, we can actively work together to
ensure that improving student achievement is at the core of our
responsibilities.
The trustees conference had a good balance between inspirational
presentations and practical tools for us to use. I found the whole experience
to be rewarding and I left feeling better equipped in my role. Most
importantly, I am genuinely enthused and confident in where we are as a
school and the direction we are taking to constantly keep improving what we
do. In doing this, we are making sure the children attending our school are
presented with every opportunity to be successful.
Janine Dewes
BOT Chair.
———————————————————————————Gymnastics Success for Orakei School
Gymnastics is a sport that requires flexibility, fitness and strength. Our
school was lucky enough to put forward teams for the Eastern Zone
Gymnastics competitions. On Tuesday the 13th of August, the year 3-4
(Springers) and year 5-6 (Flyers) competed. The school was represented in
the boy’s competitions by year’s 4, 5 and 6 and year’s 3, 4, 5 and 6 in the
girl’s competitions. The students have been practising and receiving
coaching from Mrs Craig every Tuesday and Thursday this term. A lot of
the students felt nervous and excited on the day but all of them had great
successes and enjoyed themselves. The year 3 girls team placed second
and all of the boys teams placed first in their competitions. Individual results
were, Luke Neal - 1st in the year 5 boys programme and Denzel Timu, 3rd.
Lauren Coutts placed 2nd in the year 6 girls competition and Sione Lamipeti
placed 3rd in the year 6 boys. This Tuesday the 20th it was the year 7 and 8
students turn. The events the girls competed in were the beam, floor and
vault. The boys did the same but instead of the beam they had to complete
a bar routine. Many of the girls were very talented and do gymnastics as a
sport so it was very challenging for Sarah Malu our sole entrant.
Nevertheless, she competed at a high level and finished in 3rd place overall.
The boy’s year 8 entrant was Mitchell Bohea and he kept a cool head and
gave 100%, winning the event narrowly which was superb. The year 7
boys’ team competed well and achieved 2nd place in the team’s event with
Jodeci Gillman-Timu coming second. Congratulations to all of our
competitors for their hard work and effort. A special thanks to Mrs Craig for
training the teams to such a high level, we couldn’t have done it without her.

Anecdote
It was 1969. The grandmother
of a boy in my class lived in the
house next door to the school's
Grace St entrance. She did
have a small black and white
TV around 24 inch. All 30 odd
kids from our class plus our
teacher Mrs Robinson clustered around the TV and
watched in awe as Neil
Armstrong stepped on to the
moon surface. "That's one
small step for man. One giant
leap for mankind."
