REMEMBERED OLD SONGS
When playing for Senior Centers and Alzheimer patients, we need songs folks remember. You may need to
have chromatic notes below middle C, i.e. Bb, G#, also notes above middle C, i.e. D# and in the upper octave, D#, G#, A#(Bb) and if you have it, a very high E.

FLORIDA BLUES
Could this be the way I feel when some of our musician friends go south for the winter? Well, regardless,
this catchy fiddle tune with a little bit of funk is definitely a pleaser. More of a fun and different fiddle/
bluegrassy tune than true "blues" - but it is a quick study and a keeper!

My beginner Hymn choice for 2016 is: "In The Sweet By And By" - this will be just the main melody with
step by step guidance in learning it on the hammered dulcimer. You will have no trouble coming away with
this song intact, and on your song list - even if you just bought a dulcimer yesterday!

ARRANGING HYMNS PLUS
What are the thought processes when arranging a hymn? In this workshop we'll look at the structure &
tools of arranging and put a few into use. These arranging thoughts/practices can also be used for arrangements of other types of songs as well as hymns.
HAMMERED HYMNS II
"How long has it been, since you've talked with the Lord - and told Him your heart's hidden secrets." This
is the first great line of this heartfelt hymn by Mosie Lister. Come and add this song to your gospel repertoire - taught with various embellishments to enhance, upon the hammered dulcimer.

PAINT A MUSICAL PICTURE
Be expressive and musical and most importantly have fun! The hammered dulcimer is a percussive and very
expressive instrument. Learn to vary your playing to include soft passages as well as loud forceful playing.
The way you control the sound is by the way you hit the strings. Learn rhythmic emphasis and ornaments,
as well as simple variations while learning interesting tunes. The idea is to get the fullest range of sound
possible. We will learn hammering techniques and patterns specific to tunes that illustrate all the above.
Get ready to move up to the next creative level with your playing!

FUN WITH 6/8 TIME
6/8 time is a compound time signature used in many styles of music, but most notably Jigs. Often times it's
tricky to get the right "feel" on the hammered dulcimer, and it's easy to fall out of time in this time signature. The goal of this workshop is to show how certain hammering techniques can make this time signature
easier to get the hang of and groove with. To practice this material, I will show you my favorite chord progression, which has a few different types of chords, is super fun, and sounds really cool.

READING MUSIC ON HD
This workshop introduces note-reading to HD players who either have no experience reading music, OR who
are just not any good at it on the hammered dulcimer. I played exclusively by ear for years and the thought
of reading sheet music was terrifying, but it's skill you can develop! I will show the basics of note reading
and introduce some drills and cognitive tricks that will help bridge the gap between sheet music and hammered dulcimer.

STARTING TO IMPROVISE
If you're not a person who has ever improvised, just the thought of it can sound terrifying. I've been
there! However, improvising can be an absolute blast and it's a skill that can really bail you out if you get
derailed while playing a tune. This workshop will be a friendly environment to get your feet wet. We will
discuss, demonstrate and practice a number of techniques to get you started playing "off the cuff". Workshop handout and online video support will be provided.

UNDERSTANDING THE CIRCLE OF 5ths
The circle of 5ths is a tool that is used universally by musicians of every kind. Hammered dulcimers players
are fortunate to play an instrument that corresponds to this amazing tool in a very direct way. The goal of
this workshop is to show HD players that correlation and help them to understand how they can use the
Circle of 5ths to gain a deeper understanding of their instrument, and begin using the unique layout of the
hammered dulcimer to their advantage.

the embellishment. Most of all, they are EASY to learn! You will learn not only the notes and shapes of the
most used chords in our music, but also how to apply them. You will learn how to substitute one chord for

SHAPE NOTE & WORSHIP SING
The focus of this workshop will be participative singing and four-part harmony. We will warm up with some
singing exercises, which will introduce participants to the four-shape system taught in Singing Schools
from the mid-1800s to today in America. Then we'll "sing" from the Sacred Harp tunebook. Temporary
copies provided. If you've always wanted to know how harmonies are structured and have wanted to practice interlaced harmonies and fuguing, this is your chance. This class is scheduled for 90 minutes.

GETTING CONTROL OF THE WHISTLE
The whistle is deceptively easy to play…badly! We’ll spend the time trying to understand three concepts
that might be useful to players: 1) breathing and breath support 2)What to do with the tongue 3)A bit
about simple Irish ornamentation. Obviously all three could be the topic of a workshop. The intent here is
to provide an introduction to the concepts which the players can take away and develop on their own. Music
will be provided for those who stay for the workshop along with a brief list of materials on the web that
might be useful for whistle learners to know about. Reading useful, but not totally necessary. D whistle, D
low whistle, or flute is necessary. Recorder players may come, but will find that many things will not apply
to their instruments.

LET’S PLAY SOME SCANDINAVIAN TUNES
This is a chance to play through some common Scandinavian tunes I have not heard at Evart…much. If you
are already a player of this kind of traditional music there will probably not be much new for you here, but
others will have a chance to play through a few of the different kinds of tunes and get some sense of the
musical style. On the list will be at least these: Finnish Polka, Gänglat fra Möckfjard, Janeen Mazurka,
Johann Persnippen (schottishe). Reading skills will be useful, though those who learn by ear are welcome.
Music will be provided, but you must stay to play it and not just come, grab the music and leave.

PATTERNS! PATTERNS!
Open to all melody players. Much of the traditional music we play is composed of simple patterns that are
often repeated within a tune and among different tunes. Learning to hear those patterns can make learning
tunes much quicker and learning to play them can make playing tunes easier and better. The ability to hear
these patterns is part of why some folks pick up tunes so quickly. We'll examine a set of common patterns
we've identified. Through playing and hearing them in tunes you may know we'll help you to become aware
of them. Bring a tuned instrument so you can play along as we work our way through the patterns and discover how things "lay" on your instrument. This is not about "licks" or "endings" or "tags" or "intros" or any
of that - just patterns.

CANOODLING YOUR NOODLE**
It's time to quit relying on other peoples' musical compositions and, instead, simply learn to play the instrument right in front of you. In this workshop, you will understand how to play without relying on what is
written on a musically-prescribed piece of paper! This is not a "tune" workshop, but takes learning much
farther. In this workshop, you will learn to "mix it up" learning to improvise and embellish on the fly. If you
play any tune ten times through, you will learn the techniques and skills to play it ten different ways, never
having to play the tune the same way twice. This will change how you play and give you a new-found freedom
and joy in your playing. Quit playing with your eyes, and start using your noodle!

DE-MYSTIFYING MODES: PRACTICAL INFORMATION ABOUT MODES
Skills and ear training with just enough music theory to apply to the four modes we commonly play. Have
you ever been in a jam where a tune starts out as if it's in D Major, but then there's a very prominent C
note and chord, and you protest, "But there is no C in the Key of D." Or is there? Emphasis will be on hearing and understanding this most mysterious of the common modes (mixolydian) as well as the two most common minor modes (dorian and the "natural minor"). BRING INSTRUMENTS.

2 HR. SLOW JAM
A structured jam session. Tunes will be played slowly (sometimes very slowly) so beginning players and
those learning the tune can play along. Several participants will have the chance to select a tune to play.
Tunes selected must be familiar to at least one of the leaders and to a reasonable number of participants.
While not being specifically encouraged or discouraged, religious tunes may be selected. Players of all instruments and all levels are welcome and are encouraged to sit "up close" so we can hear each other. This is
a good way to get started playing in jam sessions.
