The Erie 1 Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) is a regional education service organization serving schools and communities in western New York. Erie 1 BOCES provides educational and administrative services, facilities and staff to meet mutual needs of local districts by operating on a regional, cooperative basis. 19 Component Districts The 19 districts are able to enroll in a variety of instructional and non-instructional services and they share the administrative, capital and rental expenses of Erie 1 BOCES. Non-component districts, non-public schools within the boundaries of component districts and other BOCES participate on a limited basis. Erie 1 BOCES was established in December of 1957 as a way for local school districts to collaborate on educational offerings while reducing their individual expenses. There are 37 BOCES in the state. Erie 1 BOCES is home to the Western New York Regional Information Center (WNYRIC). The WNYRIC provides technology solutions for about 100 school districts and four BOCES in the western region of New York State. ■ Akron ■ Williamsville Erie 1 BOCES’ district superintendent is a field representative for New York State’s education commissioner. The district superintendent facilitates communication between school districts and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) in addition to a number of community agencies. As a liaison office for the NYSED, educators often visit Erie 1 BOCES’ campuses for training on technology integration, curriculum, New York State standards and reporting. ■ Amherst ■ Cheektowaga ■ Cheektowaga-Sloan ■ Cleveland Hill ■ Depew ■ Lackawanna ■ Maryvale ■ Sweet Home ■ City of Tonawanda Value to Taxpayers Our component school districts and taxpayers within those communities depend on Erie 1 BOCES to be the catalyst for developing shared educational programs.
