Experiences, the direction, & the programs so the distance runner

& a better person.
—- Marshall Sellers, Founder & Director, The Paavos

“The unknown runner
becomes known when he/
she stops being part of
other runners who work
hard at avoiding work.
The unknown runner
seeks Key Experiences
that not only motivate, but
challenge him/her to do
things never done before,
things better than before,
& things he/she may not
want to do. You will do
things on a Paavo you
would not do if you had
stayed home. Break out
by enrolling now: ‘Stick
your neck out, & then
follow it’.”
— Coach Sellers
What is significant:
Motivation the right way;
Running
An individual motivating key experience;
Spartan atmosphere
Where the priority is to run.
A Camp is where you will:
String of Key Experiences
Become a better runner;
Then become really good;
Run faster;
Train on your own;
Learn to become a training leader;
Take a manual (“logbook”) home;
Learn in an educational environment.
That the Paavos are willing
to be different than any
other running camp; in order to give Campers what
they need to succeed
Experienced Staff
“I want to thank you for providing my son with the Paavo experience. He is having a great
running season. You have taught many things about life with his experience. His attitude
& confidence as a runner & person has greatly improved. Thank you for teaching my son
that success is possible.”
— Parents of Brad Henicke, Texas
“It has been wonderful listening to Matt’s stories about his Paavo Experience & to see his
improved motivation & desire to lead his team to the State Meet. He told me he was happy
we ‘made’ him go”
—- Parents of Matt Hare, Wisconsin
“I was just thinking about those summers on the Paavos. I recently moved to Colorado, &
drove “our” route; the Paavo West Route. As I drove by certain landmarks, I could still
remember those moments on the Camp. I believe today those experiences really defined
us, & made us who we are today. All of you who participate in the Paavo Camps must
treasure the moments! They are going to be some of the best of your lived.”
—-Emily Faber, West & North Camp Alum

Real People. Real Results
Parents: “Thanks so much for the opportunity for Brian on the Paavos. Wow! I hope more parents will understand what you
really do with young people educationally. I have now seen Paavo Leadership. I have seen individual accountability with my
son. I have seen my son come back from his Paavos with beliefs that are crucial to proper growth as a runner & as a person.“

From Coaches: “The Paavo Camp is like no other. It will give you, the runner, the opportunity to challenge yourself which is so
necessary to becoming a better runner. It will give you a complete look at learning from some of the best coaches in this United
States. It will inspire you to higher training levels. Parents, your child will be taught life lessons, a training philosophy & model,
and will run in some of the most unique & scenic sites. A Paavo Camp is not just another running camp. It is a “Motivating Key
Experience”.

“After leaving North Camp last summer, my cross country season was a dream. I won over half our meets, broke 3 course
records, & finished 8th at the Illinois State XC meet. Before attending the Paavos, simply qualifying for one state meet was a
dream. Now, I have competed in my second, and am an all-stater. I earned All-American honors racing against numerous
Paavo runners in the TAC regionals, (10 seconds behind Paavo Alum Jacob Nay). Thanks again for a tremendous year.“

TEXAS BASTROP: Also called "Texas Regional", intent is to bring runners of diverse age & ability to common ground that has YEARS of tradition. Not
even the 2011 wildfire that destroyed more than half of Bastrop State Park, where the Camp takes place, could stop the records going down. Runners &
teams often go to both TEXAS BASTROP plus RATX, to maximize summer training, & the results can be seen clearly in the Texas State Meet finals.
LEADERSHIP: A new specialty camp in 2013, this replaces Missouri, & is specifically designed to focus on developing leadership skills for runners of all
levels & abilities. This will be a good one to put on your resume. It camps in one spot, & travels throughout the Park to run. Qualified Paavo Alumni Staff
are coming to improve their own skills. Set in beautiful south-central Indiana, this is the year that will establish the records for future Paavonians to beat!
MIDDLE: The fun of this camp is running against someone near your pace. While training & classroom work is geared for the younger & developing
runner, these kids get to run in the same beautiful scenery with the older kids. Where else can a 6th grader say they raced a High School State Champ?
NORTH: Tradition is the mainstay of this "TEAM CAMP", as Alums worry their records will be broken. Originally held at Grand Marais wilderness, it is
now held on campus grounds with hot & cold water. Campsites stay in one place, so Campers are bused to the beautiful shorelines & woodlands to run.
WEST: In the beginning, just the old Chuckwagon was an adventure in itself. If you ask a West Alum, each will tell you a different story. The uniqueness
of this Camp is that it travels from flatlands to the mountains & everywhere between (9 of 14 days at altitude), & goes from really hot to really cold. It is
truly "Spartan." You can separate yourself completely from regular habits (& habitats), while running in places tourists won't go. Runners come from all
across the US to start in Indiana (365' above sea level), & make friendships that last a lifetime.
RATX: moves across distinctive "West Texas" to the rare white sands, black fish, & ends with a full rainbow at Ft. Davis Mountain. The idea is to travel to
very different places to awaken the mind, run in places not usually available to runners, & to develop "competitive partnerships", where runners from very
different places, especially those who normally train alone because there's no one near their pace, can find someone to train with. Teams are especially
encouraged to come with their coaches to this one.

You do not need to return this form. It is for your personal use.
"As a Runner, I realize Paavo coaches are a
diverse & hardy lot, but they all have one thing
in common: a strong desire to help runners to
be their very best. It was a truly great camp
experience, & something I won't ever forget."
--- Sean Ion
"As a Parent, it is about growing up. I just want
my son to be in an environment where he can
emerge as an individual, be allowed to work at
higher individual levels, & to experience the
wins & losses that will be incurred in the adult
world where the game is real & genuine."
--- Elkhart, Indiana Parent
"As a Coach, it is that your word, your actions,
your attitude, & your demeanor that are aimed
at helping your athletes to become self-reliant,
so they can pursue goals that make them more
valuable to themselves, those they work for, &
those who eventually work for them. Any time
a person can come to the realization that they
can attain, or do far more, than they believed
they could before, plus do it in a positive way, it
is a Key Experience they will benefit from."

c. TRAINING LOG FORM
"The most important thing to bring to a PAAVO is the right attitude. You're not going because you want a
'vacation' with your friends, or because it 'makes' you a better runner. You are going first & foremost for an
opportunity to achieve personal excellence; an experience that can never be taken away from you. If you
expect to walk away from a camp being a better runner, you must understand we can't MAKE you a better
runner. We just draw 2 lines. We draw the starting line & YOU choose whether or not you'll cross it. We
draw the finish line, & it is YOUR choice to just cross it, or to cross it as a new & improved YOU."
--- Pat Wylie, PAAVO Alum & Coach
Training
is Physically Completed Effort in terms of Distances & Times, as recorded in a TRAINING
LOG. Training on your own is the absolute objective of a Paavo Camp. Documentation of training & racing is crucial to getting the most out of a Camp. You must also note the Key Experiences that happen
along the way, as they will affect progress. The body and mind do not always develop at the same rate or
at the same time. Big improvements in one area can be made separate from the others, yet one thing will
affect the others. Use the simplified form below, to teach yourself to pay attention. By observing what
may seem to be 'small things', you will discover what moves you forward in your progress - because Key
Experiences, training, & racing levels cannot be separated.
When you enroll, you will receive a more extensive Training Log, which is more specific to the
Camps. It will use this same information, but build on the terminology (words & phrases) you will learn on
the Camp. It will be the focus or your Paavo Adventure, & is the most important thing to bring to the Camp
(other than your attitude!), because your training will be based on how well you document. It will determine your "Training Level", which then determines how much & where you may run.
To do now: Run every day (as your medical supervisor & home program Coach directs), & record the
Experiences, so you can do more on your Paavo Camp. WITHIN 21 DAYS OF YOUR CAMP CHECK IN
DATE, switch to the Log that comes in your final enrollment packet instead of this one.
TRAINING TIPS
Measure your runs - track , road, or path
Determine landmarks by increments (ex: 1/4 mi, 200m)
Time both the increments & the total distances
Time & measure EVERY TIME you run
Write it all down, including experiences along the way
Observe how experiences (weather, attitude, people)
affect your time over distance


Training yields Racing yields Training. For a Runner, it is about the lessons which apply to Life.
