ARTISTIC VISION AWARD Big Sky Documentary Film Festival 2006 “ ” Cam Fuller, The Saskatoon StarPhoenix “TIMELESS...” Nick Miliokas, The Regina Leader-Post SYNOPSIS Short (3 Line) This personal documentary follows two prairie women through four seasons as they defend their choice to remain where others have left—facing isolation, the fury of the weather and haunting remnants from the past. a film by Lea Nakonechny www.twomuseums.com Medium (150 word) Two Museums is a cinematic exploration of memory and place set in the starkly beautiful landscape of the Canadian prairies. First-time filmmaker Lea Nakonechny follows two characters—one at the beginning of life’s journey and one at the end—to portray the cyclical beauty of farm life. Selma Siemens is the filmmaker’s paternal grandmother; at age 75, she continues to live alone on her farm and has the reputation of an eccentric junk collector. Allison Sambrook is a small-town girl working as curator at the museum in Morse, a town near Selma’s farm. The living context of farm life is represented by Carl Siemens, Selma’s eldest son, and the only child to continue the family tradition. Two Museums weaves the lives of these people into a universal experience that speaks to the nature of identity in the face of change. Long (250 word) Following the lives of two rural women over the course of a year, Two Museums captures the contemporary reality of sparsely populated Southwest Saskatchewan. Each must defend her choice to remain where others have left—facing isolation, the fury of the weather and haunting remnants from the past. Allison Sambrook grew up in a small town and came to the town of Morse at age twenty-one. Due to the shortage of young people in the community, she soon found herself in the position of museum curator. The Morse Museum, where she works, stands as a monument to the optimistic dream of farm life; its collection is all that remains of the waves of immigrants who settled here to try their luck at living off the land. Selma Siemens is the filmmaker’s grandmother and lives alone on her farm in the area, a few miles away from where she was born. Many of the artifacts in Allison’s museum are things that Selma remembers having used; she witnessed the Great Depression from a two-room shack with her parents and nine siblings, not all of whom survived. Her childhood home is now collapsing into the grass, no more than shelter for birds and cattle. First-time filmmaker Lea Nakonechny intertwines the two women’s stories with depth and sensitivity, resulting in a unique documentary experience. The breathtaking landscape is fixated upon with blinding intensity; changing seasons symbolize the renewal of hope and the pangs of loss that define this beautiful but unforgiving place. I’m from the southwest corner of Saskatchewan, Canada. Rolling prairie hills, fiery sunsets and an extreme climate have shaped my identity. The continually revolving seasons are both merciful and punishing; they rule the lives of people on the prairies and rule my film as well. The idea for Two Museums came to me far from my home in Saskatchewan while I was attending university in Montreal. Certain images surfaced first: my grandmother in her kitchen listening to the radio, the junk pile across the road from her weather-beaten house, Allison alone in the museum in winter. These memories of my home stood out clearly and the parallels that shape the film appeared around them. If I were to categorize Two Museums it would be a hybrid of “direct cinema” and “point of view” approaches. The goal was to represent the Saskatchewan experience with as little manipulation as possible, but this experience is also the director’s personal message. Although I do not appear on camera and a deliberate decision was made to avoid voice-over and other techniques that would emphasize my presence, Two Museums is an investigation of myself as much as it is an investigation of others. I am inextricably linked with the people in the film— sitting at their tables, eating their food and chatting with them about their lives both during and after filming. Our intimate shooting approach involved only two crew members (myself and my husband) and gave the film its most distinct attribute: purity of experience. The subjects, both of whom I knew long before I ever thought of making films found themselves forgetting that the camera was on, their daily lives unfolding as though we weren’t there. It amazed me how, a year after visualizing these things I could stand there with a camera and capture them as they happened. People often said the things I had hoped they would say and did the things I had hoped they would do. I can only credit this to the truthfulness of the film. Two Museums is true to its subjects because the story is mine as well as theirs. The experiences in the film are things that the three of us share because we come from the same place.
