Dear Friends of Glacier Peak High School:
Welcome to the 2016-17 School year and another great year for the Grizzlies. I hope your summer has been exciting and fulfilling. We
welcome the class of 2020 and their families to Glacier Peak. You have joined a very special school when you joined Glacier Peak
High School. Our commitment is to give your student four years of high level learning and a great deal of success.
We are back to work getting ready for this school year. A large group of GPHS teachers have joined with other district teacher leaders
in developing strategies to ensure that students clearly understand the purpose behind every lesson. Teams of teachers will continue
their work on Fridays to create an educational program that will challenge, support, and motivate your child to learn at very high levels.
Clarifying what is most important and working together to teach that to your child in the best way possible is our goal for the year.
With you as part of the staff, student and parent team, we’ll work together to get the most out of your child’s time at GPHS. Our mission is to “Prepare Students to Lead Extraordinary Lives.” I assure you that each staff member at Glacier Peak is committed to achieve
that end.
This newsletter is the most important one of the school year. Included in it are some very important information and dates. It also has
directions for many of the procedures that we follow at Glacier Peak. Please read it from cover to cover. Please follow the web links
to more information. It will inform you and will answer many of your questions.
I am incredibly excited for this ninth year of Glacier Peak High School. We move to the 4A Classification in the WESCO Sports
L201eague. We will be competing against a whole new set of schools. It will be a year to remember with even more things to celebrate
than our past years.
Sincerely,
Jim Dean
Principal
August Student Start-Up
At Student Start-Up, students are given the opportunity to pay for their ASB cards, yearbooks, and parking permits;
pick up their schedules, have school pictures taken (please wear school appropriate clothing and no hats), put money
on their lunch accounts and turn in important information before school starts in September. Special discount
package rates will be available at this time. Even though students pre-registered for classes in the spring, it is
crucial for students and parents/guardians to confirm their student’s registration by coming to one of the Student
Start-Up days or by contacting Heidi Gauthier at 360-563-7600. Heidi can also be contacted by email at
[email protected]. If we do not receive notification of intended enrollment, your student could be in
jeopardy of losing his/her class schedule. If you are unable to arrive at your scheduled time, feel free to attend
during one of the other times listed below. If you have multiple students attending GPHS, you are welcome to bring
them in during the same session.

The First Day of School
Although the district calendar lists Wednesday, September 7, as the first day of school, we have reserved that day at GPHS exclusively for
our Freshmen class. Freshmen students will attend regular school hours of 7:30 a.m. to 2:12 p.m. and bus transportation will be available. Our 9th graders will take part in Link Crew activities during the day which will help them become acquainted with the school, fellow
classmates, and GPHS policies and procedures. Freshmen do not need to bring their school supplies, and lunch will be available in the
cafeteria at regular school prices listed on the following page.
All students will report to their regularly scheduled classes on Thursday, September 8.

Back to School Night - September 15
This is the first opportunity for parents to meet their student’s teachers and discover what their child will be learning this year.
Teachers will be headquartered in their classrooms with a 10 minute revolving schedule and 5 minute passing times. Information will
be limited to curriculum and classroom expectations. (However, parents will be able to discuss individual student issues during
Parent/Teacher Conferences in late October). We will begin the evening in the gym at 6:45 and then move to classrooms.
Visitor Check-In
For the safety of our students and staff, we are asking that all visitors to our building please report to the office to check in. After
signing in, all guests will be given a visitor’s pass. Classroom visitations will be limited during school hours to appointments only,
arranged through the individual teacher.
Student Schedules
Students will receive their schedules for the 2016-2017 school year during Student Start-Up on August 23 and 24. These schedules
are the result of thoughtful course selection by students and parents and careful review by counselors, who check for graduation
requirements and appropriate placement. Because of this process, we expect schedules to accurately reflect student academic
needs and choices. Consequently there should be a minimum of schedule changes necessary.
CORRECTING SCHEDULING MISTAKES: Start-Up Days (August 23 and August 24): Counselors will be available to talk to students
about correcting scheduling mistakes (missing class period, two periods of the same class, etc.).
STUDENTS REQUESTING SCHEDULE CHANGES: September 15—Junior & Seniors and September 16—Freshmen and Sophomores
These are the ONLY DAYS that you can turn in schedule request forms.
A Note from your School Nurse:
In preparation for the school year, there are a couple of items that may make your student better able to stay at school. If your student suffers from headaches, menstrual cramps, etc., please come to the Health Room at Registration and complete a ½ sheet medication form. This will allow your student to carry a one day’s dose of non-prescription medication (Advil, Tylenol, Motrin, etc.).
If your student needs prescription medication at school, such as inhalers or medication for ADHD, please come into the Health Room
and pick up a medication form. You will need to sign this and have your doctor complete it as well. All medication forms need to be
completed at the beginning of the new school year. If your student had a form on file last year, it does not carry over to this year.
If your child received immunizations during the summer, please call me with those dates so that I can update their record. Feel free
to leave a message at: 360-563-7507.
Lastly, as you probably know, if your student has a life-threatening health condition, such as diabetes or anaphylaxis, we need to
have a signed Health Care Plan in place, as well as the appropriate medication form and any necessary medications and supplies.
SAT/ACT TEST
Juniors: An important first step to your college search is to determine if the schools you are interested in require you to take the
SAT or the ACT. This is information that is typically easy to find on college/university websites. Once you know which test you
will be required to take, you can then go to the official test websites: www.act.org for the ACT and sat.collegeboard.org for the
SAT to find out information on scheduling your test. Tests are offered at specific locations outside of GPHS and on various dates
Attention Seniors taking the SAT this October, November or December: There will be a SAT Prep Class offered in September and
October. Cost for the class is $70. Registration for the September class is open and registration forms are available in the counselor’s office or by e-mail: [email protected]. The class will be held over 2 Saturdays – Sept. 17 and Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 1
p.m. both days. Registration for the September class will close Sept. 12. Registration for the October class will begin Sept. 19. The
October class will be held on Oct. 22 and Oct. 29. If you have any questions you can contact the parent club volunteer coordinator –
Carol Good 425-583-0494 or [email protected]
Parking Issues Addressed at GPHS
Drivers, we need your assistance. We have many students who have pur chased a par king per mit at
GP who arrive at school unable to park. This is due to other students parking at GPHS without possessing
a parking permit. While the desire to drive to school is understandable, parking at GPHS is limited and
parking without a pass is taking the space of someone who has paid for the privilege. As a result, if you are
parking at GPHS without a parking permit, your vehicle may be towed at the owner’s expense to allow for
those with a permit to park on campus.
Parking for 2016-2017
How Does a Student Get a Parking Permit Next Year?
Student parking permits for the 2016-2017 school year may be purchased at Student Start-Up (August 23 and
August 24) by seniors for $50 with an ASB package or $65 without (sales tax included). Due to student interest and availability of parking spaces, Seniors with a driver’s license have first priority in purchasing permits
at their scheduled Start-Up time. Students will need their payment, driver’s license, vehicle description and
car license plate number. Students may only purchase their own permit, however a student’s parent may purchase their student’s permit in the student’s absence by providing the previously stated information. Senior
students unable to attend Start-Up may ask to be placed on a parking list by calling (360) 563-7504 (include
your driver’s license number) by the end of the day August 24. All fines and fees must be paid prior to parking pass purchase.
Juniors with a driver’s license will be able to sign up for a parking lottery for the r emaining spaces
through their scheduled registration times. During the Start-Up dates, interested Juniors will report to the Parking table at the front office to add their names to the parking lottery list by showing their driver’s license. Students may only sign up if they are in possession of a driver’s license at the time of lottery sign up. Juniors
who are unable to attend Start-Up and would like to have their name added to the parking lottery can leave a
message with the request by calling (360) 563-7504 (include your driver’s license number) by the end of the
day August 24. Specific position on this list will not affect the likelihood of receiving a parking permit – this
will be a random drawing. Lottery results will be posted outside the main office, after 2:00PM on August 28.
Students who won the opportunity to purchase a parking permit will be able to purchase a parking permit
through September 4 by providing payment ($50 if an ASB card was purchased or $65 without - sales tax included), driver’s license, vehicle description and car license plate number to the bookkeeping office.
Sophomores and Freshmen will not be allowed to par k at GPHS.
Students parking at GPHS without parking permits are subject to being towed at owner’s expense without further notice. Sophomore (and Freshmen) students found parking at GPHS will be ineligible to purchase a parking permit their Junior year. Junior or Senior students parking at GPHS without a parking permit may forfeit
their opportunity to purchase a parking permit in the future.
