Here we are with the first issue of the year
and you might have notice a few changes.
We’re bigger (and who doesn’t appreciate
that?) and we’ve rolled out a whole new
design as well. Not a bad way to start the
new year and our second decade.
So much has happened since the
holidays, we’ve got a lot of caching up to
do. In this issue we take a look at some
upcoming trends in politics, social issues
and economics. Don’t worry; we’re not
getting all serious on you, we still have
the latest happenings at the bars and
clubs. Of course, we also have nice pics of
hotties that we snapped at past events,
and the gossip on what’s going on in our
community from our roving reporter,
Harry Taint, in his “In The Know, On The Go”
column.
We know what you want and we’re here
to serve it up, family style. Our pop culture
diva, Gregg Shapiro, has the lowdown
on the latest movie and DVD releases.
Also an apology to Gregg, his by-line was
mistakenly cropped off of his last column
and he wasn’t credited for his great pics
from Sidetrack’s holiday party.
Finally, we know that Chicago’s winters can
be daunting. Who the hell wants to go out
there when the snow is up to your knees
(now if there was someone out there with
something down to his knees, that’d be a
different story). Thank goodness, in a city
the size of Chicago, there are plenty of
options for ordering in yummy treats (and
food delivery as well). We’ve done hours of
research to give you an overview of all your
options in ordering in.

boi Trends to Watch for in 2011
Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose..
At least that’s what they say in France.
The phrase “the more things change,
the more they stay the same” certainly
won’t apply in Chicago this year. We’ve
already got a new county president,
Toni Preckwinkle, after years of the
Stroger family treating the county
budget like its own private piggy bank.
And, after decades of benevolent rule
by Richie Daley
we’re going
to have a new
mayor (more
on that in our
next issue).
From politics
to fashion to dining trends, we’re going
to see some major changes in 2011. In
this issue we take a look at upcoming
trends, whether welcome (a new batch
of politicians) or not (a new batch of
politicians).
Politics
Things look better for our community
locally than for the nation at large,
thanks to the high profile clout of the
GLBT community. Governor Quinn
realizes he owes his win thanks, in
large part, to GLBT
support. Cook County
President Preckwinkle
has a long history of
supporting equality
and all of the remaining
mayoral candidates
have positive records as
well.
Economy
Slowly but surely the economy is
getting back on track. Job growth
is on the horizon and it looks as if
there will be more opportunities in
2011, especially for those in the right
industries. According to predictions
the strongest job growth will be seen
in fields where intense training and
education is expected.
Management, scientific and technical
consulting positions such as network
systems and data communications
analysts; industrial engineers;
financial analysts; customer service
representatives; and public relations
specialists can expect a rosier job
outlook this year.
As the majority of our population
ages social and health care assistance
positions will
become increasingly
important. The
hottest jobs in
this field include
medical and
public health care
specialists such as
biomedical engineers; network systems
and data communications analysts;
biochemists and biophysicists; medical
scientists, except epidemiologists; and
compliance officers. Support personnel
such as social workers, managers of
personal service workers; occupational
therapists; physician assistants; speechlanguage pathologists; physical
therapists and social and human service
assistants will also see strong job
growth.
The increasing use of data driven
devices will affect software publishers
in their need for computer systems
design and related services; network >>
boi and computer systems administrators;
accountants and auditors; computer
software engineers, systems software;
computer support specialists, market
research analysts; and customer
service representatives.
When the economy is strong, the
construction industry grows. The
hottest jobs in this field include
heating, air conditioning and
refrigeration mechanics and installers;
septic tank servicers and sewer
pipe cleaners; telecommunications
equipment installers and repairers,
purchasing agents, except wholesale,
retail and farm products; and cost
estimators.
Workplace
With new jobs come new changes
at the workplace. Workers will
increasingly work from home, all
or part of the time. Employers have
found that have a brick-and-mortar
headquarters is not as essential as
once thought. Telecommuting shows
no signs that
things will slow
down. Mobile
devices such as
smartphones and
tablet computers
are poised to
surpass desktop usage. Expect online
business to start moving to a ‘mobile
first, desktop second’ approach.
As the line from “A Chorus Line” asks,
“Am I my resume?” Increasingly the
answer is, “no”. Digital portfolios are
replacing traditional resumes, not
only because the business world is

moving into
the online
realm, but
also because
printed paper
versions get
out-dated
so quickly
and can’t provide nearly as much
information as the combination of an
online portfolio and a well-developed
social network.
A survey done by HR consultants
Towers Watson, found that on average
U.S. companies expect salary budgets
to go up by 2.9% in 2011. And those
employers are beginning to value “soft
skills,” with verbal communication skills
in particular coming out on top as are
a strong work ethic, teamwork skills,
analytical ability, and initiative.
Technology
Expect more video calling on smart
phones.. and more tablets. The
iPad has a hold on the majority of
the tablet market now, but a new
android operating system for tablets,
Honeycomb, could bring Android
tablets to a new level. As consumers
use more data with applications such
as Netflix video streaming, Pandora
music streaming and Skype on their
smartphones, the G4 networks will
increase to handle the load. Pandora’s
Internet music service allows you
to create your own stations. The
company also has plans to integrate
into car technology systems.
Slacker Radio, is yet another music
subscription service to consider.

“Baby It’s Cold Outside”
It’s a cold winter night and you’re all
toasty in that Snuggie you got from
Aunt Betty. You thought she meant it
as a joke, she was dead serious. Now
you find that what seemed like a stupid
gift is actually pretty good. You’re in the
middle of writing Aunt Betty a profuse
thank you note when you suddenly hear
a noise.
No, it’s not someone trying to break in;
it’s your stomach growling. It’s been
so cold that you haven’t been grocery
shopping and you certainly don’t want
to venture out in that storm. Thanks to
technology you can stay in the Snuggie
and order in anything from a simple
snack to a multi-course feast. If you’re
not certain what you want, you can
browse a variety of restaurant delivery
websites for places in your area that
deliver. Or, you can look at our guide
to some of our favorite places. Either
way, you get to stay warm and cozy and
satisfy your culinary cravings.
Most restaurants, even little mom
and pop places now have an Internet
presence. You no longer need to clutter
up that drawer with various take-out/
delivery menus, simply hop onto your
favorite restaurant’s website and peruse
the menu and enter your order. Here’s a
little hint; if it’s a slow night, many places
will deliver to you even if you aren’t in
their delivery area. It may incur an extra
charge, but if you’re really craving their
signature dish, it doesn’t hurt to ask.

What about those nights when you’re slaving
over the computer trying to meet a deadline,
playing a video game or searching for Mr. Right

for web design right now and work

with just a towel on.. no a big deal, cuz
that happens a lot.. but he took one
look at me and dropped his towel. I’m
sure I turned bright red... but on the

Beauties and Beasts

“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” finds
graduating high school senior Bella (a
slightly less sullen Kristen Stewart) still
obsessed with brooding vampire Edward
(Robert Pattinson). She accepts her true
love’s marriage proposal in exchange for
his promise to “change” (read “kill”) her so
that they can be together eternally. Wait,
let’s get this straight. Mormon author
Stephenie Meyer thinks it’s all right for
white trash teenagers to marry vampires,
but GLBT folks should be deprived of the
same expression of love and commitment?
More like “Twit-light.”
The third installment in the ongoing
saga of the vampires, wolves and
humans of Forks, Washington, eclipses
its predecessors. It’s got plenty of skin,
courtesy of stud (wolf ) cub Taylor Lautner
as Jacob, and his pec pack of wolves.
It’s got a fair amount of special effects.
There’s also an increase in the Native
American folklore aspect. The scary factor
is also ratcheted up not only with the
lingering presence of the ruthless Jane
(Dakota Fanning) and her creepy crew,
but also bent-on-revenge Victoria (Bryce
Dallas Howard) and her boy toy Riley
(Xavier Samuel) and his army of merciless
newborn vamps.
“TTS: E” also gets points for cranking up
the humor. That’s right, you will most
likely find yourself laughing out loud
on several occasions, and that appears
to be the way that screenwriter Melissa
Rosenberg intended it. For not taking itself
too seriously and doing it in a respectable
couple of hours, “The Twilight Saga:
Eclipse” is recommended viewing. Special
features on the two DVD special edition
include a six(!)-part “making of” doc, audio
commentary, deleted and extended
scenes, music videos and a whole lot more.

“Avatar” was more than just a special effects feat
for the senses. The film allowed James Cameron
to get political, commenting on the destruction
of the planet, corporate greed and the negative
military mentality. Set in the not too distant future,
paraplegic Marine Jake (Sam Worthington, of the
distracting accent) is recruited to take the place of
his recently deceased brilliant scientist identical
twin brother on a mission on the planet Pandora.
A multi-national corporation has a vested
interest in the mission since Pandora is rich in
the valuable mineral known as “unobtanium”
and Earth needs that resource harvested for fuel.
Under the guidance of the scientist aptly named
Grace (Sigourney Weaver), Jake walks again in a
surrogate body modeled after those inhabited by
the Na’Vi, the native people of Pandora. Through
a series of interactions with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana),
the daughter of the Na’Vi’s tribal leaders/power
couple, Jake earns their trust and is accepted as
one of them.
However, Jake is also being given orders by
the square-jawed, GI Joe-minded Col. Quaritch
(Stephen Lang), who would like nothing more
than to wipe out the Na’Vi, get the unobtanium
and return to whatever Red State he calls home.
Pulled in different directions, when Jake realizes
that the relationship he worked so hard to
establish with Neytiri and her people is at risk, he
naturally switches sides.
Purposely preachy and mesmerizing, the original
version of “Avatar” remains first rate entertainment
with a message, if overly long. The three disc DVD
set features an all-new three-hour extended cut
of the film with an alternate opening, previously
unseen material, more than 45 minutes of deleted
scenes and the feature length doc “Capturing
Avatar”.
“Beauty and the Beast”, Disney’s 1991 Oscar “Best
Picture” nominee, a “tale as old as time.” featuring
the timeless tunes of the Alan Menken and the late
Howard Ashman, is now available in a Diamond
Edition three disc combo pack including two Blurays and one DVD.

says, “One day you’re in, then you’re out.”
She may be speaking about fashion, but
the same applies to the food industry.
Everyone’s always looking to cash in on
the next big thing. Here’s a look at some
of the industry trends you can expect in
the coming year.
According to Andrew Knolton, restaurant
critic for “Bon Appetit”, restaurant chefs
will be featuring “found” ingredients.
One reason for this is that chef’s love
to experiment, the other is that these
ingredients tend to be inexpensive, at
least until they get trendy. Watch for hay
to be featured on restaurant menus along
with other odd ingredients such as, lichen,
pine needles and seaweed.
With more and more people realizing that
they have food sensitivities, the national
Restaurant Association reports that
gluten-free cuisine will be a significant
trend for the industry.
The locavore (eating locally grown
products) movement will expand
beyond vegetables to include meat,
dairy and seafood. A side effect of this
will be the rise of vegivores, those who
make vegetables their primary source of
nutrition, not shunning meat entirely, but
using it in a subordinate role in meals,
either as flavoring or condiment. This is
also a trend toward healthier eating in
general. One the other hand, we’ll see
more “house-made” sausages and an
emphasis on gourmet meatballs.
Restaurants are increasingly offering
smaller portions. The trend towards
small plates has grown significantly.
There’s less of a “sticker shock” at highend restaurants, ordering 4-5 tasting
plates at $5 each vs. an entrée for $30,
means bigger profits.
When it comes to booze, we all have
our favorites, but there do tend to be
strong trends. Remember the craze for
retro cocktails? That will be replaced
(at least temporarily) by culinary
cocktails, those featuring savory
ingredients. The locavore movement
will also result in more micro-distilled
artisan liquors and brews.
Of course, restaurant trends can be
as fickle as those in other industries.

Well, it looks like the gossip going around
about BE-HIV being defunct is a little
premature. Yes, the executive director did
resign, but the agency is currently working on
retooling and according to my source, “There
are no plans to cease our programs.”
Winter is traditionally a slow time in for
Chicago’s hospitality industry, but leave
it to our community to buck that trend.
The bars are as packed as ever and events
are scheduled right on top of each other.
Sidetrack got a whole slew of special events. In
addition to the regular programming of show
tunes and comedy that packs the place, watch
for Miss Ruck ‘N Maul, a fundraiser for Chicago
Dragons Rugby Club on Saturday, Feb. 19.
That’s followed by the bar’s Oscar Party on
Feb. 27 (and who are you wearing?), its chili
cook-off on March 5th and the annual Mardi
Gras festivities on March 8. Those queens wear
me out!
Berlin is just as busy, starting with the preopening gala and preview of the film “William
S. Burroughs: A Man Within“ on Jan. 20. If
you picked this magazine up too late, you
can catch the film at the Music Box after the
21st. Don’t forget that the last Sunday of the
month is Berlin’s “Block Rockin” 90’s Night ,
and no cover (charge-although you can come
uncovered I suppose.) But the really BIG NEWS
is that the club scored the official Robyn afterparty following her concert on Friday, Feb. 11.
If you go straight to Berlin after the concert,
wave your ticket stub and you get in without
paying the cover.
Mayor Daley may be retiring, but his liaison to
the GLBT community, Bill Greaves, is showing
no signs of slowing down. In honor of his 60th
birthday he’s having a little fete at Minibar.
It’s a salute to About Face Youth Theater on
Monday, Jan. 24. Since he is turning 60 it’s an
early bird special from 6-8 p.m.
Take one campy yet captivating plot line,
add in 15 vivacious drag queens, numerous
costume changes, 16 trendy pop songs, throw
in 7 meticulously choreographed production
numbers; and you have a musical theater
event like you have never seen! That’s what
you can expect at the Center on Halsted the
weekend of Jan. 21-23 when “Girlfriends – a
Drag Musical” takes to the stage to benefit the
Chicago Round-Up. Tickets are $20 and the
show runs on Friday and Saturday at 7p.m. and

The artist Tim Otte thanks the patrons and
