“I See Skyway”, completed summer 2010 (design by youth in Urban Family program at Creston Point) “Diversity Makes Us Beautiful”, completed September 2015 (design chosen by zip code 98178 / community vote) Skyway / West Hill MURAL RENOVATION PROJECT 2015 Michèle Savelle Project Coordinator Introduction Because of the length and complexity of the project, I use a simple first-person timeline format for this report, which necessarily omits a lot of detail. A few images help to tell the story. At the end there is a list of resources. - MS Project location: Northwest corner of the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr Wy S and S 129th St, Seattle, 98178 November 2014 Project location, shown on poster-distribution map I made for the project. Ayanna Brown (Alajawan’s Hands Foundation) called me to ask for help. The mural I had coordinated in 2010 had been badly tagged and was an eyesore: We agreed we’d work together, starting after the holidays. January 2015 Contacted Aaron Halley at King County to discuss permit: $500 fee, application form and certificate of insurance. Ayanna offered to look into getting a 4Culture grant for the project. February Connected with community organizations and leaders about the new project, invited participation. Came up with the theme, “diversity” and began to enlist help from a few personal friends in community Investigated removal of tags, test was done by Graffitti Busters - impossible! Visited hardware stores and gathered costs of paint and all necessary supplies. Developed budget: ~ $6,000 - $7,000. Found coatings consultant (TM Coatings Consultant) and professional painting company (Fawcett Painting) and got bids / commitments. March 2015 Was connected to Roman Casino by a friend in the community; owner Jim Routos pledged $3,000 to the project. Skyway Solutions pledged $3,000 as well. S k y w a y / We s t H i l l MURAL DESIGN CONTEST April 1 - 30, 2015 It is big: 130 feet long, and 10 feet tall at its highest point. I agreed to pay for the permit. Announced project at West Hill Community Association Board meeting and invited participation. Was able to secure help in getting the word out to community, orgs and schools. Got connected to wider community network, and sent out press release / “call for participation” on March 24th, 2015. This is the shape of the wall: The mosaic eye will be kept. Get creative! Contest is open to everyone. The 2010 “(eye) See Skyway” mural at the northwest corner of S 129th St and Martin Luther King Jr Way S has been ruined by tagging. The community is going to create a new one there in July-August 2015. Get an entry form at: Please take a minute to think about the theme of ‘diversity’ and do a sketch /idea for a new design! The form is also available for download at: www.buildskywaywesthill.org There will be a community vote in June, and the winning design idea will be applied to the wall. Contest ends: April 30, 2015 Learned that community wanted a design contest. Developed deep email list for the project via networking. Created posters and entry forms for the contest.
