CITY TRAINING SERVICES
PART OF THE BRADFORD COLLEGE GROUP
Established in 1983, City Training Services has a 30-year track
record of helping young people in Apprenticeship programmes in
the Yorkshire area.
Apprenticeships offered by City Training Services provide the
opportunity for ‘on-the-job’ training covering the practical aspects
of the Apprenticeship and ‘off-the-job’ teaching and learning, on
a day release or block release basis, usually at Bradford College, for
the theoretical aspects.
Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to ‘earn while you learn’
and gain valuable work experience, whilst achieving nationally
recognised qualifications that will ultimately lead to you becoming
a fully qualified Apprentice.
City Training Services is an established training provider with
employees who are accomplished at supporting Apprentices,
monitoring progress, undertaking work-based assessments and, in
partnership with Bradford College, assisting in your learning. New
areas are currently being developed. Please contact us for future

What is an Apprenticeship?
•• Apprenticeships are work-based qualifications that last
between 12 and 48 months (depending on the industry
and level).
What are the Benefits of an Apprenticeship?
•• You will earn a salary, gain qualifications and get real
hands on work experience
•• You will be employed from day one for a minimum of
30 hours per week
•• Apprenticeships can lead to Higher Education such as a
Foundation degree for some areas.

What Qualifications Will I be Doing During
my Apprenticeship?
Vocational Qualifications – This is the ‘hands on’ part of
your training which shows that you understand your job
and how to do it effectively, it is often referred to as
‘competency or NVQ’.
Knowledge Qualifications – This is the ‘theory’ part of your
training which could be classroom based sessions in a college
environment and will help build your knowledge and develop
your technical skills.
Functional Skills – Increase your confidence by developing
your English, Mathematics and ICT skills.
Employer Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) – Learn about
the nine national outcomes for EER, such as your rights and
responsibilities under Employment Law, Health & Safety and
career pathways for your chosen career.
Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) – learn about
creative thinking, independent enquiry, reflective learning,
team work, self-management and effective participation.
What Support Will I get?
You will be assigned a Training Coordinator who will support
you from day one and for the duration of your Apprenticeship.
They will visit you every 10 weeks to review your progress and
will be available to speak to you at any time should you need
to. Your assessors and tutors are also there to support you
with your qualifications throughout your training.

APPRENTICESHIP LEVELS
Apprenticeships are available across the UK. There are
differences in approaches and terminology between
apprenticeships systems in England, Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland.
There are apprenticeships at different levels and they take
different lengths of time to complete. It is possible to move
up to a higher level or go on to Higher Education through
part-time study sponsored by your employer.
Typical Intermediate Apprenticeship

CITY TRAINING SERVICES
APPRENTICE WINS GOLD
Having reached the WorldSkills UK National Final for
Metalwork and picking up a Gold medal, Christopher Hanson,
an Advanced Construction Apprentice with City Training
Services, now faces the exciting possibility of representing the
UK in the World Finals to be held in São Paulo, Brazil in 2015.
Christopher was a winner at the competition held at
Birmingham’s NEC in November 2013 where in excess of
75,000 people attended to see over 700 competitors battle it
out in a series of 70 competitions.
Christopher works for Metalcraft Europe Ltd of Bradford,
loyal and longstanding users of the City Training Services
and Bradford College partnership, for the training of
their Apprentices.
This great achievement underlines the quality of training
and skills delivered by all parties and is testimony to the
encouragement provided to support Christopher’s effort and
determination to be successful in winning Gold.
We are very proud of Christopher and congratulate him on
his achievement. We now hope he is selected to represent the
UK in the World Finals where we wish him every success.

Accounts
ACCOUNTS LEVELS 2, 3 AND 4
Course Overview
Money is at the heart of every business and this
comprehensive accounts programme will qualify you
for a career in this vital industry. You will work towards
AAT Accounting Qualifications, including AAT Level 2
Certificate in Accounting, AAT Level 3 Diploma in
Accounting and AAT Level 4 Diploma in Accounting.
Course Structure
Level 2: Modules such as: Principles of Recording and
Processing Financial Transactions, Banking Procedures
wand Basic Principles of Costing.
Level 3: Modules such as: Principles of Accounts Preparation,
Principles of Cash Management, Principles of Costing and
Principles of VAT.
Level 4: Modules such as: Principles of Budgeting
and Principles of Internal Control.
You will be required to study on a day release basis at

Barbering
BARBERING LEVELS 2 AND 3
Course Overview
This course will enable you to make an informed decision
about your future career. You will attend college one day
per week and be trained in your workplace for the rest of
the week. An assessor will visit your workplace to assess your
practical competence. You will study Mathematics and English
in Functional Skills and Employee Rights and Responsibilities.
Course Structure
Level 2: You will study: Client Consultation, Cutting Men’s
Hair, Cutting Facial Hair, Styling Men’s Hair and Health &
Safety plus Colouring Men’s Hair and Develop Effectiveness
at Work.
Level 3: Mandatory and Optional Units totalling 47 Credits.
Mandatory Units are: Health & Safety, Cut Hair Using a
Variety of Barbering Techniques, Client Care & Consultation,
Facial Hair Shapes and Creating Effective Patterns.
You will be required to study a technical qualification at a
Bradford College.
Entry Requirements

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
LEVELS 2 AND 3
Course Overview
If working in a general office environment appeals to you,
then a course in Business Administration will fit the bill. You
will gain a wide range of office skills, the ability to work
successfully in a team and an Apprenticeship or Advanced
Apprenticeship through City & Guilds.
Course Structure
Level 2: Organising Meetings & Events, Dealing With
Travel Requests, Handling Mail and Using Electronic
Message Systems & Office Equipment.
Level 3: Dealing With Internal & External
Correspondence, Producing Documents, Managing
Resources, Managing Information, Creating Documents
and Developing Presentations.

The hospitality and catering industry is rapidly growing into
one of Britain’s largest employment sectors. If you have a
flair for serving food and drink or you have an ambition to
work in this fast- paced yet rewarding industry then this is the
Apprenticeship for you.
Course Structure
The Apprenticeship covers Units that are selected in
consultation with you and your employer. The following are
examples of Units you could study: Introduction to Food
Safety & Hygiene, Giving Customers a Positive Impression,
Prepare & Clear Table Areas, Serve Food at The Table, Prepare
& Clear Bar Area, Service of Alcoholic & Non-alcoholic Drinks

CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE’S
WORKFORCE LEVELS 2 AND 3
Course Overview
Nurseries provide practical experience towards an Apprenticeship
in the Children and Young People’s Workforce through City
& Guilds. You will be assessed by a portfolio of evidence that
supports your ability and competency to work with children
and young people. You will also undertake a Level 2 Award in
Paediatric First Aid.
Course Structure
The Course covers: Introduction to Duty of Care for Health, Social
Care or Children & Young People’s Settings, Child & Young Person
Development, How to Safeguard the Welfare of Children & Young
People, How to Support Positive Outcomes for Children & Young
People, The Speech, Language & Communication Needs of
Children & Young People With Behavioural, Social or Emotional
Difficulties and The Needs of Children & Young People Who Are
Vulnerable & Experiencing Poverty & Disadvantage.
You will also be required to study Functional Skills at

GENERAL CONSTRUCTION MAINTENANCE
OPERATIONS LEVEL 2
Course Overview
You will learn how to carry out duties for safety requirements,
how to keep the building in a good state of repair, carry
out reactive and pro-reactive maintenance, painting, minor
plumbing, joinery and masonry.
Course Structure
The Apprenticeship covers: Safe Working Practices in
Construction, Knowledge of Information & Quantities and
How to Carry Out Small Scale Wood, Masonry, Plastering &
Plumbing Repairs.
You will be required to complete an NVQ portfolio.
You will also be required to study a technical qualification at
Bradford College.

Creative and Cultural
(offered in conjunction with the Bradford School of Arts & Media)
CREATIVE AND CULTURAL
– FIVE PATHWAYS LEVELS 2 AND 3
Course Overview
The Creative and Cultural sector is a rapidly growing and increasingly
important part of the UK economy, currently employing over two
million people. The Creative and Cultural Apprenticeships allow entry
into the creative industries where you will gain valuable experience
in employment.
Opportunities exist in five pathways:
Live Events and Promotions, Cultural Heritage Venue Operations,
Community Arts Management, Technical Theatre (Lighting,
Sound and Stage) and Costume & Wardrobe.
Course Structure
Most of your training will take place in the workplace, with additional
day release at Bradford College. You will achieve an EDI Award/
Certificate in Principles of the Creative and Cultural Sector (College
based) and an EDI Certificate/Diploma in one of the specialist
pathways (work based). Functional Skills are also covered and
assessment is carried out through the development of an e-portfolio
of evidence.
Entry Requirements
Level 2: A minimum of four GCSEs at Grade D or above including
English and Mathematics.
Level 3: A minimum of four GCSEs at Grade A*-C including English
and Mathematics or Level 2 on the Literacy and Numeracy screening.

Creative and Cultural

CREATIVE AND CULTURAL
TEXTILES PRODUCTION LEVEL 2
Course Overview
This Apprenticeship will give you a basic understanding of
the processes within the textile industry. It is suitable for both
Apprentices new to textiles and those wishing to progress to a
Level 3 qualification. The Level 2 qulification is ideal for those
employed as: Pattern Room Assistant, Yarn Buyer, Sales, Yarn
Winder, Spinner, Weaver, Knitwear Mender, Textile Tester or
Warper and many other occupations in textile maufacture and
the retail of textile goods.
Course Structure
You will study four Mandatory Units: History of Textiles,
Health & Safety Employer Rights & Responsibilities,
Developing Working Relationships and Maintain Quality
Standards (BS EN ISO 9000).
You will also study Optional Units based on your
specific requirements.
You will be required to study a technical qualification
at Bradford College.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of four GCSEs at Grade D or above including
English and Mathematics.

Creative Digital Media
CREATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA
LEVEL 3
Course Overview
This Apprenticeship covers roles across the creative and
digital media industries including digital graphics and
photo imaging.
There are many job roles in this area from production and
editing to interactive media and photography.
Course Structure
College day release covers: Print Production, Digital Graphics,
Print & Photography and Photographic Practice.
As this is a work-based Diploma, the Apprenticeship also
has various Optional Units from which to select based on
employment requirements.
You will be required to study a technical qualification
at Bradford College.
Entry Requirements
GCSE Mathematics and English at Grade A*-C or

If you enjoy working with customers and working as team then
this Apprenticeship is perfect for you.
Course Structure
This Apprenticeship will cover: Communicating Effectively With
Customers Face to Face, In Writing or by Telephone, Resolving
Problems & Improving Customer Relations, Promoting Products
& Services, Keeping Records, Gathering Customer Feedback and
Working in a Team.

Dental Nursing
DENTAL NURSING (ORAL HEALTH CARE)
LEVEL 3
Course Overview
By working a minimum of 30 hours per week in a Dental
Surgery, you will soon become expert in essential parts of
the job including: assisting the dentist, caring for patients,
sterilising instruments and managing the reception desk.
With further training, you could go on to become a Dental
Therapist, Hygienist or Radiographer on completion of
this programme.
Course Structure
Scientific Principles in the Management of Oral Health
Diseases & Dental Procedures, Provide Chairside Support
During the Assessment of Patients’ Oral Health, Prepare
& Maintain Environments, Instruments & Equipment For
Clinical Dental Procedures, Dental Radiography, Reflect On &
Develop Your Practice, Provide Chairside Support During the
Provision of Fixed & Removable Prostheses, Ensure Your Own
Actions Reduce Risks to Health & Safety and Emergency First
Aid Skills.

Course Overview
You will be given first-hand experience and learn the majority of
the skills needed on the job, whilst also completing off the job
training within College by day release.
The course provides an excellent grounding and can lead to a
stimulating career in industry. Completing the course will gain
you an Advanced Apprenticeship in Electrical and Electronic
Engineering through SEMTA.
Course Structure
You will cover areas such as: Complying with Statutory
Regulations & Organisation Safety Requirements, Using &
Interpreting Engineering Data & Documentation, Working
Efficiently & Effectively in Engineering, Health & Safety in
the Engineering Workplace, Producing Electrical or Electronic
Engineering Drawings, Using a CAD System, Assembling, Wiring
& Testing Electrical Panels/Circuits/Components Mounted in
Enclosures and Communications for Engineering Technicians.
You will also be required to study a technical qualification at
Bradford College.

Course Overview
You will be given first-hand experience and learn the majority of

training within College by day release.

through City & Guilds and Summit Skills.

an Achievement Measured 2 (AM2) practical examination and
multi-choice test.
You will be required to study a technical qualification at
Bradford College.
Entry Requirements
GCSE Mathematics and English at Grade A*-C and a good
working knowledge of science subjects or Level 1 on the
Literacy and Numeracy BKSB screening. You will be required to
take a colour blindness test. You will be required to have a PC

Course Overview
This NVQ course will provide an understanding of the sector
and will also give you an awareness of the range of jobs and
work settings in the beauty field.
You will attend college one day per week and be trained in
your workplace for the rest of the week. An assessor will visit
your workplace to assess your practical competence.
Course Structure

Horticulture
HORTICULTURE LEVEL 2
Course Overview
This Apprenticeship will involve all aspects of horticulture.
Gardeners and Landscapers both undertake similar work.
Gardeners work mainly in the private sector in areas such
as commercial premises or private households. Landscapers
plant and manage borders and green spaces, build ponds and
water features and undertake hard landscaping work such
as driveways.
Course Structure
This qualification is delivered through practical and written
assignments which are carried out in the classroom and/or in
the workplace. You will be required to produce work tasks and
build a portfolio of evidence. The course will include the study
of Functional Skills at level 1 in Mathematics and English,
Employment Rights & Responsibilities and Personal Learning
& Thinking Skills.
On completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship,
you will have the opportunity to apply to progress to an
Advanced Apprenticeship.
You will also be required to study a technical qualification.

Optical Retailing
OPTICAL RETAILING LEVELS 2 AND 3
Course Overview
These Apprenticeships will support those working in an
optical retail environment as dispensing assistants; contact
lens assistants; optical retail receptionists and optical
assistants. All of these job roles include supporting
Dispensing Technicians and Contact Lens Technicians
as well as Optometrists.
Course Structure
You may be required to attend College for a one-day
induction, after which the course will be delivered in the
workplace using an electronic portfolio. You will be allocated
an individual assessor to observe your performance in the
workplace (an average of every four to six weeks).
On completion of the Level 2 course you will be in a position
to progress to a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship and on
completion of the Level 3 course, you will be in a position to
progress the Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing.
You will be required to study a technical qualification at
Bradford College.

PHARMACY LEVELS 2 AND 3
Course Overview
On these courses, you will be given first-hand experience and
learn the majority of the skills needed in the workplace whilst
gaining the knowledge required for these job roles.
The Level 2 will be completed entirely in your workplace using
online materials.
For Level 3, you will be required to attend a college day in
either Bradford College or in our virtual classroom.
Course Structure
Level 2 will be completed online with the support of an
individual assessor to observe you in your workplace. This
course takes an average of 15 months to complete.
Level 3 meets the entry requirements for registration with
the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a Pharmacy
Technician. This course is delivered over two years, on a day
release basis, at Bradford College.
Entry Requirements
Level 2: GCSE Mathematics and English or Entry 3
