Alcom Is All In - Sustainable Waste Solutions
Alcom Is All In
for Sustainability
At SWS we take great pride in our partners and clients who have sustainable practices
in place. Our client Alcom, a leading provider of integrated solutions for print, direct mail
marketing, and business development solutions for over 60 years, is the 13th printer
nationwide to be certified as a sustainable green printer by the Sustainable Green Printing
Partnership (SGP).
Alcom has been an industry leader in its philosophical and financial commitment to sustainable
business practices for many years, well beyond OSHA and DEP mandates. As committed
environmental stewards, Alcom is dedicated to moving forward on the environmental
improvement of their envelope (building & grounds), the printing process and their employees’
health and well-being.
Alcom embraces the philosophy “print grows trees.” It is a proven fact that paper mills that
properly produce pulp also replant trees at a rate of 3-4 per tree harvested. Through the
purchase of print on paper in an average year, Alcom’s customers facilitated the planting of
over 700,000 new trees!
And that’s not all: during one three year period, Alcom responsibly
recycled nearly 12 million pounds of paper, cardboard, aluminum,
plastics, electronics, and assorted materials. Thanks to SWS, they
no longer put ink cans and buckets into a landfill. Instead, between
the months of August and December 2011, 2,505 ink cans and 405
plastic ink buckets were responsibly and safely converted to energy.

WHAT’s NEW
Electronic recycling, soon to be required by
law, offers many challenges for corporations
from both a regulatory standpoint, as well as
providing privacy issues. At SWS, we strive
to provide solutions for our customers so they
can rest assured their trash is being eliminated in the most environmentally friendly
manner. To that end, we are pleased to announce the addition of electronic recycling
to our services.
In order to ensure our clients meet regulations when disposing equipment such as
computer hardware, monitors and televisions, and to protect corporations’ privacy,
we provide a recycling service that comes directly to our client’s location, offer a
secure drop-off where hard drives are drilled and shredded, and then disassembles
electronics for the parts to be sold when possible.

The Importance of
COMPOSTING
Composting, often described as nature’s way of recycling, breaks up organic waste, such as food scraps,
fruit and vegetable remains, and coffee grounds. For those in the foodservice industry, composting is an
important step in maintaining an environmentally friendly business and conserving valuable resources.
For our clients in the foodservice industry, we offer organic waste removal so clients don’t have to invest
in an on-site composter, thus eliminating concerns about government regulations concerning control
against disease and groundwater pollution. The totes we provide feature two liners, the outer one being
more durable and an inner liner that holds the food waste and is itself made of compostable materials.
The totes also include gaskets and locks to assure control of food odors. We set a schedule for the
pickup of full totes, replacing the full totes with new totes and taking the waste to the composting facility.
By composting, our clients can help to:
• Regenerate poor soils—the composting process encourages the production of beneficial
micro-organisms (mainly bacteria and fungi), which in turn breaks down organic matter, and
increases the nutrient content in soils and helps soils retain moisture.
• Clean up contaminated soil—the composting process has
been shown to absorb odors and treat semi-volatile and volatile
organic compounds (VOCs), including heating fuels, polyaromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs), and explosives, binding heavy metals and
preventing them from migrating to water resources or being absorbed
by plants.
• Prevents pollution—avoids the production of methane and leachate
formulation in the landfills and prevents pollutants in storm water runoff
from reaching surface water resources.
Reduce your environmental footprint and take being green beyond
using organic foods. To take the steps to start composting your
restaurant waste, contact us for more information.

INSURING YOUR LOSSES
In WORKERs’ COMPENSATION
As companies look to the future, despite the fact that there has been a decline in workplace fatalities
overall, they face the rising cost of workers’ compensation, which offers growing challenges, and rising
costs. Factors that affect the costs of workers’ compensation and insurance include an uncertain future
due to competitive pricing, further rate decreases, weak macroeconomic factors, and growing healthcare
costs as claim frequency has continued to rise in 2010 and 2011*.
Challenges that influence the rise of workers’ compensation costs include:
• An Aging Work Force—As the life expectancy of workers increases, companies are experiencing
a work force that develops more age-related disabilities.
• A Rise In Medical Costs—As medical costs rise each year, it costs companies more to treat
injured workers.
• Increased Risk for Employers—Technological advances, while improving efficiency, such as
satellite offices don’t allow companies to have as much control over the workspace and environment.
To help keep your workers’ compensation at a manageable cost, consider
the following steps to help prevent rising costs:
• Review Premiums and Claims—To do this, request a copy of your audit worksheet and check how
your employees are classified and look for overcharges.
• Improve Safety—Institute a safety program to bring down your accident rate and improve overall
safety. Use your workforce to find out about possible risks and address them quickly. Inform your
insurance company about the program and see if this can lower your premium.
• Shop for a Deal—Don’t settle for your current plan. Compare brokers as well as carriers. Many
insurance brokers will only shop at certain insurance
carriers, so get three or four brokers to offer you
pricing.
Taking these steps can help to keep your workforce
safe and your insurance premiums at a low cost.
