WHAT IS PIXMA?
PIXMA brings Canon’s collective know-how together to deliver
superb quality, reliability and speed.
The next step forward in Canon innovation.
PIXMA harnesses everything Canon knows to bring imaging close to perfection.
When Canon unveiled its first 35mm camera in 1934,
it began a journey that quickly saw the company
become a byword for pioneering technology.
It’s a mission that has earned Canon products an
enviable reputation for providing levels of performance
and reliability unprecedented in their markets.
Since then, Canon has developed a whole series of
innovative optical and imaging technologies, from the
launch of the revolutionary Canon Bubble Jet printer in
1985 to the concept of inkjet photo printers as output
devices for digital cameras.
PIXMA represents the culmination of this unique
Canon heritage. By combining everything Canon
already knows with everything Canon can envision,
PIXMA brings Canon and its customers ever-closer to
photo printing perfection.
Through the decades, this drive to develop world-first
advances has focused on providing products that
deliver supreme quality and reliability.
3
Canon technologies working as one. Canon’s optical, print and
copying pedigrees lie at the heart of PIXMA printers.
PIXMA brings together three separate but intertwined
DNA strands of Canon knowledge – the company’s long
expertise in photographic, inkjet print head and copier
technologies.
COPIER TECHNOLOGY
The fusion of these three legacies is what puts PIXMA
products in a class of their own, synthesising the superb
image quality and high printing speed that makes them
stand out.
The image capture and processing technology used by
PIXMA multifunctionals is founded on Canon’s vast
experience in digital colour copying. What’s more, the
paper handling systems found in PIXMA products are
inspired by Canon’s long history at the frontline of the
personal copying industry. This pedigree reaches its
apex in the superb reliability and performance of the
PIXMA range.
PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNOLOGY
PRINT HEAD TECHNOLOGY
Canon began with cameras and has been at the
forefront of optical and photographic technologies
since the early 1930s. PIXMA printers inherit this long
heritage, harnessing the knowledge behind Canon’s
famous EOS digital technology, the world’s most
advanced camera system.
Canon brings all its expertise to the forefront of inkjet
printing in its PIXMA printers and multifunctionals.
At the core of every PIXMA product is Canon’s unique

CANON’S CHROMALIFE100 SYSTEM
PRESERVES PRECIOUS MEMORIES
FOR GENERATIONS
PIXMA and Canon ChromaLife100 consumables keep photos
looking great for 100 years1.
RESISTING HEAT, LIGHT AND AIR
A feature of the latest PIXMA models, Canon’s new
ChromaLife100 system uses Canon’s FINE print head,
new formulation inks and genuine photo papers to
produce outstanding colour and keep prints looking
good for up to 100 years1.
As with traditional photos, a variety of factors – light,
humidity and exposure to the atmosphere – can cause
digital prints to fade and discolour in time.
The high nozzle density of the FINE print head produces
exceptional print resolution, whilst Canon’s new
formulation inks are uniquely developed to create
the bright, rich colours of the original image.
Faded image*
Canon’s ChromaLife100 system uses a proven balance
of FINE technology, Canon’s new formulation inks and
glossy photo media to resist these risks, providing
lasting protection against the damaging effects of
humidity, air and light.
ChromaLife100 image
Finally, Canon glossy photo media help ensure
long-lasting prints, preserving and protecting precious
photo memories for up to a century. So when users
print out photos with ChromaLife100, they can rest
assured that their grand- and even great-grandchildren
can see and share them too.
For instance, when digital prints are framed under
glass, it’s sunlight that poses the main risk of fading.
The ChromaLife100 helps produce fade-resistant prints
that stay bright.
What’s more, Canon Photo Paper Pro’s special
anti-oxidant coating gives photos resist the harmful
influences in the atmosphere – vital protection if photos
aren’t stored in an album or under glass.

LONG-LASTING
PROTECTING PHOTOS FOR LONGER
CANON MEDIA BRINGS OUT
THE VERY BEST IN PIXMA
Top quality papers and other media for every creative need.
SUPER-GLOSS WITH CHROMALIFE100 PR-101
Canon genuine papers are specially developed to
unlock the chemistry of Canon’s ChromaLife100
system. By harmonising with Canon’s new inks and
FINE print head, they provide stunning, high-definition,
long-lasting photo prints.
Canon’s flagship ChromaLife100 Photo Paper Pro
PR-101 is uniquely structured to maximise the beautiful
colour and durability delivered by ChromaLife100.
First, FINE’s high nozzle count delivers high resolution
at high speeds, whilst performing seamlessly with
Canon’s new inks for optimal reliability. Second,
Canon papers synchronise with the FINE print head
and Canon inks, absorbing them instantly and
passing smoothly through the printer
for extra speed.
In addition, Canon inks are
also specially formulated to
flow cleanly through FINE’s
nozzles, drying on impact with
Canon papers, and recreating the
intense, vivid colours of the
original photo.
The final element is the PIXMA printer
driver. This pre-sets the printer to expect
Canon papers and Canon inks,
completing the ChromaLife100 chemistry
to produce brilliantly crisp and colourful
prints, fast.
Composed of five high-performance layers including
a high ink-absorption alumina coating, this premium
quality paper has a special mirror surface for a super
high gloss finish. Moreover, a special coating on the
ink absorption layer inhibits the fade caused by the
atmosphere.
The result is ultra-glossy, super-smooth
prints virtually indistinguishable from
conventional photos and
which offer the very best of
ChromaLife100 durability.
CHROMALIFE100 PAPERS
FOR PHOTO PRINTING
Canon’s wide choice of glossy
photo media brings all the beauty
of ChromaLife100 to every photo
printing need.
ChromaLife100 papers include
everything from Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss with
a satin finish for reduced glossiness, to Glossy Photo
Paper – a brilliant white media for vibrant results for
everyday photo printing.
EXTRA CREATIVITY
Along with glossy photo papers, Canon takes printing
creativity to its outer limits with a full range of specialty
media. From Matte Photo Paper to fun Photo Stickers,
T-Shirt transfers, Transparencies and an all-in-one
Photo Album Kit, each is designed to perform perfectly
a variety of PIXMA products for optimal results.
VERSATILE
PERFECT PRINTING CHEMISTRY
PIXMA PRINTERS PRODUCE
PHOTO PRINTS OF OUTSTANDING
ACCURACY AND QUALITY
From the sharpest detail to the smoothest gradations.
PIXMA printers use precision print heads with super-fine Micro-Nozzles
that place minute quantities of ink with pinpoint accuracy onto the
page. The density and design of these Micro-Nozzles ensures that each
ink droplet produced is consistently sized, shaped and placed with
extreme accuracy. Called Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle
Engineering or FINE, this head structure ensures optimal sharpness
and image resolution, creating prints that look incredibly lifelike.
TRUE
INCREDIBLE SHARPNESS
SMOOTH GRADATIONS
The subtle shifts in colour and tone between highlights and shadows
require printers to reproduce the millions of tiny colour transitions that
form an image. The minutely small diameter of Micro-Nozzles enables
them to fire infinitesimally tiny 1pl and 2pl dots. This allows the ink
droplets be placed on the paper incredibly close together, helping to
create continuous tones and smoother gradations.
GRAIN-FREE IMAGES
Grainy images can come about when ink droplets are too large or
erratically placed. The 1pl or 2pl droplets ejected by PIXMA FINE print
heads are so tiny they are below the human eye’s level of detection
in many hues. This microscopic size enables grain to be reduced to
virtually zero ensuring printed images are smooth, highly detailed
and free of irregularities.
THE PIXMA RANGE REPRODUCES
MORE COLOURS TO DELIVER RICH,
STUNNING PHOTO COLOUR
From the lushest hues to a uniquely wide colour palette.
RICH
WIDER COLOUR SPECTRUM
Digital cameras record a wider range of colours than
can typically be reproduced by printers. Canon’s FINE
technology and Easy-PhotoPrint software help to
narrow this gap, enabling a broader range of colours
to be printed for incredibly faithful reproduction of
images – even those captured in wider colour spaces
such as Adobe® RGB. The result is truer photo
reproduction with more intense and deeper colours.
REVOLUTIONARY 1pl INK DROPLETS
The opening of each Micro-Nozzle on Canon’s FINE print head measures 10 microns
or less – smaller than half the width of a human hair. This minute opening is key to
the formation of PIXMA’s 1pl1 ink droplets, which deliver exceptional colour accuracy
and image clarity.
Before
DRAMATIC HIGH CONTRAST
RICHER AND FRESHER
Many PIXMA products come with
Canon’s ContrastPLUS2, a 5-colour ink
system including an additional Photo
Black ink. This added dye-based black
ink helps produce extra contrast for
ultra-professional, dramatic-looking
photo prints.
The Vivid Photo function in PIXMA printer
drivers analyses every area of an image
to identify those that will benefit from
deeper colours. It then boosts these areas
to produce richer, fresher shades, making
the blues and greens of landscapes look
lusher, deeper and more vibrant.
After
ONE-CLICK PERFECTION
Activating the Photo Optimizer PRO tool automatically examines image
data to check for imperfections such as colour fogging and under- and
over-exposure. This intuitive printer driver function then corrects any
irregularities in a few clicks, ensuring beautiful, natural-looking prints.

PIXMA DELIVERS BOLD COLOURS
AND CRISP LINES THAT JUMP OFF
THE PAGE
Perfect web prints, brilliant graphics and laser-quality text.
To be easily legible, black text has to be ultra crisp and
bold. Many PIXMA printers and multifunctionals utilise
high-density pigment black inks that instantly fix to the
surface of the page without bleeding. These ensure
laser-sharp edges and intensely bold characters,
creating well-defined black text that is easy on the eye.
HIGH INTENSITY
INSTANT FIX COLOUR
Canon's ChromaLife100 high intensity colour inks are
specially formulated to penetrate paper immediately,
drying and fixing almost instantaneously to prevent
colour smear and bleed. These inks deliver superb rich
colour on both plain paper and Canon inkjet media
giving outstanding depth and brilliance to plain paper
prints, colour graphics and photos.
NO COLOUR BANDING
The Advanced Precision Color Distribution Technology on most
PIXMA products utilises a special print head nozzle pattern that prevents
the appearance of banding on large, flat areas of printed colour. This
intelligent layout ensures that the sequence of inks applied during
printing remains the same when the print head is travelling to the left
and the right. By ensuring this consistent colour application, the system
eradicates the risk of mottling and striping that comes with conventional
single-pass, bi-directional printers.
When conventional printers
print black text with colour
graphics, black ink may
seep into the colour inks,
degrading printed image
quality. On selected PIXMA
products Canon’s
Advanced Precision Color
Distribution Technology
places the print head’s
colour nozzles below their
black counterparts, so the
printed black has time to
dry before the colours
arrive on the paper. This
allows PIXMA products to
release higher volumes
of black ink, producing
stronger, high contrast
effects without
compromising printing
speeds.
STRONG & SHARP
BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL BLACKS
PIXMA PRODUCTS DELIVER
AMAZING PRINT SPEED FOR
MAXIMUM PRODUCTIVITY
From super fast photo printing to advanced media handling.
Printing photos requires the precision reproduction of a huge range of colours
and subtle colour transitions.
PIXMA products meet the challenge, fast. With FINE print heads that place millions
of ink droplets at high speed, together with multi-motor systems for rapid paper throughput.
Selected PIXMA models can produce 10 x 15cm photos in approx. 36 seconds1.
MORE NOZZLES,
MORE SPEED
MULTI-MOTOR SYSTEMS
The multi-motor systems
on PIXMA products optimise
paper throughput for faster
work rates. Thanks to
independent motors which
each drive a different phase
of the process, from paper
feed and relay feed to
carriage movement, printing
becomes a smooth,
consistent motion, helping
to ensure printouts are
produced at super-fast
speeds.
1 iP5200
Canon’s FINE technology
enables super-high densities
of nozzles to be contained in
the print head. This high
nozzle count enables the
production of stunning
quality print in a single pass
across the page, outpacing
comparable printers, which
require several passes to
achieve the same effect.
MORE DROPLETS,
MORE SPEED
The faster a print head
produces each ink droplet,
the faster it can print. PIXMA
products work incredibly
rapidly, firing an amazing
number of droplets per
second. When you multiply
this ejection rate by FINE’s
high nozzle count, it means
a vast number of droplets
can be applied to the page
in a single second. The result
is photo, colour and mono
printing at super-high
speeds.
FAST
SUPER-FAST PHOTO PRINTING
PIXMA SINGLE INK TECHNOLOGY
MEANS EFFICIENT, LOW WASTE
PRINTING
Intelligent ink systems that minimise wastage.
PRECISE INK-LEVEL DETECTION
The rates at which printers use individual colour inks
depend largely on the type of documents and colour
images they print. Conventional printers don’t account
for these variants in colour usage, integrating their
different colour inks into just one cartridge. So when
one colour empties, the unused other inks are
needlessly discarded.
Knowing how much ink is still left for printing helps to
reduce printing costs by reducing paper waste. Many
PIXMA products use single transparent ink tanks and
ink-level detection systems to deliver this exact control.
Canon’s Single Ink system1 cuts this wastage, giving
each colour its own separate and individually disposable
tank. So when one colour is gone, the other ink tanks
can stay, minimising ink waste and maximising
economy.
CONVENIENT ON-TANK LED ALERTS
As well as printer driver ink alerts, the latest PIXMA
single ink models feature ink tank LED indicators for
improved usability, especially when the machine is
used in a standalone capacity.
An LED on each ink tank flashes at different
intervals to indicate when ink is low and empty,
enabling users to quickly check ink status even when
they’re not using a PC. Moreover, the LEDs indicate
when a tank is incorrectly installed, enhancing control
still further, especially when printed from your camera
or mobile phone.
1 MP800, MP500, iP6600D, iP4200, iP5200, iP5200R
The transparency of the tanks lets users check ink levels
at any stage. Also, Canon’s precision optical sensor and
advanced droplet-counting technology keep a constant
watch on levels as they reduce, triggering special ‘ink
low’ or ‘ink out’ alerts when tanks are nearing empty to
warn users. This intelligent system helps to minimise
wasted print jobs and the costly waste of paper and ink.
EFFICIENT
MAXIMUM INK USAGE
