The exciting and crowd drawing action will be returning to the entertainment scheduling after a hiatus for a few years so make sure to take advantage of this incredible attraction by experiencing the fastest growing sport for canines in North America. Throughout the show, DockDogs® will present the Big Air® Wave competition accompanied by an Extreme Vertical® and Speed Retrieve® competition for both competitors and spectators to enjoy. The Big Air® competition features dogs running down a 40’ dock and diving into a pool of water after an object, in which they are electronically judged for the length of their jump. The Extreme Vertical® competition is a “High Jump” for the dogs as they each lunge to snag a “bumper” suspended in the air. With each grab, the height increases in 2-inch increments until only one dog is crowned king. Rounding out the action is the newest form of competition known as Speed Retrieve®- where the dogs are put on the clock to see how fast they can run down the dock, jump into the water, swim to the end of the pool and retrieve an object which is held by a modified extender arm. The competitions are open to any and everyone. Teams are made up of one dog and one handler. Your canine must be 6 months or older to be eligible. Canines of any breed, size or shape are welcomed. Not only is the competition open to all types of canines, but also handlers above the age of 7 are welcomed. We even have a Youth Handler class for those who are between the ages of 7-14. So if you or anyone you know has a dog that likes water, gets along with other dogs and enjoys a good “chew toy,” this event is for you! Pre-registration will be available until 1 week prior to the Sport Show by visiting bighornshow.com/entertainment.php, or you can register on-site at the beginning of each day. Unique in many ways, some remember what started it all. It all began in 1951 as the Inland Empire Big Game Council. The Big Horn Show started shortly after and has continued even after the Council refocused on a broader conservation mission and became the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council in 1993. “The mission changed to be not just about game, but about the land and taking care of it,” INWC Executive Director Wanda Clifford said. Wanda Clifford has been involved with the Council for many years and she is a driving force for the Big Horn Show. She shared some of the show’s history with me. “A group of Council people decided to get together to display some of their trophies one year. The story goes that they met under the freeway, in the outdoors, of course,” Clifford said. “Each year it grew and now we have the Big Horn Show of today.” Over time, the Big Horn Show has grown to add different features, vendors, and more space. Throughout it all, Trophy Territory has been at the heart of the show. “It’s an important part of what we do. Moose, elk, bear, and cougar trophies among others,” she said. “As of last year we began taking in sheds. This year we’ve added moose sheds, too.” Every piece is submitted by the public. There are various categories and lots of ways to compete. Submissions include current harvest and past harvest categories. There are awards for junior hunter, disabled, best of show, and many more. “It’s a neat way to get your piece officially scored at no charge and possibly take home a ribbon!” Clifford said. Entries are made at the Fairgrounds starting on Wednesday and are accepted through noon Saturday. There is no fee to enter your trophy, and they are displayed through 5pm on Sunday. Judging is on Sunday. Boone & Crockett scoring is used, and entries are eligible for awards from Boone & Crockett. Full details about Boone & Crockett are available at www.boonecrockett.org. “If a piece does well enough, it gets into the Boone & Crockett. There are lots of prizes, from ribbons to belt buckles, even a firearm,” Clifford said. According to Clifford, Trophy Territory is a fun, popular, and valuable part of the Big Horn Show of today. “It’s an important part of the show. It’s a way to take pride in their trophies and be recognized,” she said. Be sure to stop by and check out all the trophies at this year’s event. Located in Bay 3 for several years, it’ll be in its usual place this year. Hot weather, poor air quality, and burn bans all impact outdoor enthusiasts when wildfires occur. Check with a ranger station if there are questions about hiking in a specific area affected by wildfires. Use fire rings and keep campfires small. Never leave a fire unattended, and never build fire rings in roads. Keep tents and other flammable materials away from fires. If you use rocks around the fire pit, make sure to put rocks back where they were found. Avoiding campfires altogether is the safest bet during peak season. Campfires are often banned above a specific elevation or near certain bodies of water. Do not break branches or cut down trees for a campfire. Use only small pieces of wood gathered from the ground. The wood should never be bigger than the ring. Additionally, make sure there are no hanging tree branches near the fire. If you must have a fire in the backcountry, make sure to follow all regulations depending on park or camp areas. Regulations may also change depending on the season. Check for burn bans in your county. Before you leave, make sure the fire is dead out. Roots, coals, and ashes should not be smoldering. If it is warm to the touch, it is too hot to leave. Drown the campfire with water and stir. Scatter the remaining, cooled ashes. Meet the new RTV X-Series Redefined. Rugged. Ready. Meet the new RTV X-Series: Redefined. Rugged. Stand your ground. Bring your arms out to your sides, and keep your voice low and calm. Avoid direct eye contact and if the bear does not immediately leave, slowly back away. If the bear comes towards you, stop and wait. Bears will usually stop, allowing you to continue backing away. If a bear attacks, play dead. Cover your neck and hands and lay as still as possible on your stomach. Do not make any noise or movements until the bear has left. Remaining calm in dangerous situations such as these is key. hUNTthe Beautiful Bitteroot Mountains! Typically, a wild grizzly bear will do anything to avoid human interaction. They are usually heard, not seen. One has a better chance of being struck by lightning than being attacked by a bear. Basic preparedness includes keeping your food and other scented items, including toiletries and trash securely packed away in a bear canister, preferably high up in a tree. Bear canisters deter scents and are not friendly to bears’ paws. However, they are bulky and can add extra weight to your pack. Some national parks require use of bear canisters so check before you go. Most grizzly attacks are defensive. If they are protecting cubs, food, or feel trapped, they will view humans as a threat. The defensive bear will growl, snort, woof, stomp, or swing its head back and forth. Steer clear if you see this happen. 2 Miles North of Hayden West on Lancaster off Hwy 95 Fishthe Majestic How To Stay Safe in Bear Country St. RegiS, Mt next to the OK Cafe and Casino 406-649-3474 If you encounter a curious bear that does not seem to be agitated, telltale signs are forward ears. In these instances (typically with black bears), you have to be the aggressor. Hold your ground and yell. If the bear continues to approach, throw rocks at it or pick up a big stick. Experts also now suggest to fight back, focusing on the bear’s face. Bear spray is also a must-have when out in bear country. Use this any time a bear feels like a threat. #5424 IT. E v O L .
