A devasting fire is the reason why the La
Fenice Opera House was originally built and a devastating fire almost destroyed the
Opera House many years later. Fire therefore plays an important role in the history of
La Fenice. The first decisive fire broke out in
1773 and destroyed the major Opera House,
the last decisive fire broke out in 1996. As
it owed its origin to a fire, it was unceremoniously called „La Fenice“ (The Phoenix - a
symbol of rebirth and resurrection).

the site of the Church of Santa Maria alla
Scala, which gave its name to the theatre.
The architect was Giuseppe Piermarini.
A visit to La Scala is the dream of all opera fans. Unfortunately it is very difficult to
get tickets for an opera there. Michelangelo can, however, assist with the organization of opera tours and get tickets eatsily.

Magical sounds and immortal melodies hardly any composer gave such a decisive
impetus to the Italian opera at the turn
of the century, as the Tuscan-born Giacomo Puccini. Many of his genial works originated in his villa in Torre del Lago. Productions of his operas take place every year in
July and August in a breathtaking setting
on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli. The
Festival began in 1931 and thrills an international audience every year.
The Puccini Festival takes place in the Summer (July and
August). The schedule and entrance fees for 2016 have not
yet been determined at the time of going to press.
