Ultimately, Wheaton College is responsible for actions by those who are classified as institutional representatives. 2009 WHEATON FOOTBALL YEARBOOK Wheaton College and Thunder Athletics Wheaton College is a coeducational college of liberal arts and science combining high scholastic standards with evangelical Christian faith and practice. Located 25 miles west of Chicago, Wheaton College is a non-denominational independent school owned and operated by a self-perpetuating board of trustees. Interdenominational in constituency, the student body represents nearly all 50 states, approximately 50 countries, and about 40 church denominations. The faculty of approximately 150 members, about 80 percent with earned doctorates, comes from a variety of universities and colleges, both in the United States and abroad. As active Christians, they are personally interested in the spiritual and intellectual development of students. Wheaton’s 80-acre campus is located in Wheaton, Illinois, a city of nearly 50,000 residents, and the county seat of DuPage County. Other college-owned campuses include the 50-acre Black Hills Science Station near Rapid City, South Dakota, for field studies in geology and biology, and Honey Rock Camp, a 500-acre youth counseling laboratory in Wisconsin. Wheaton sponsors 22 varsity sports, as well as nine club sports and a strong intramural program. Wheaton is a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), and Thunder teams compete at the NCAA Division III level. The following sports have varsity status: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, women’s water polo and wrestling. In recent years, Wheaton athletes have won 22 individual NCAA national championships in eight Division III sports and have earned All-American honors in seven other sports. In addition, the 1957 men’s basketball team won the NCAA College Division championship, and the 1984 and 1997 men’s soccer teams won NCAA Divsion III Titles as did the 2004, 2006 and 2007 women’s soccer teams. DEFENSE: On defense, Wheaton returns just two starters. “The defense is where we have the most holes to fill,” notes Swider. He adds, “We graduated a lot of kids on that side of the ball.” One of the returning starters is 6’ 4”, 280-pound defensive tackle Nick Theobald. A Second Team All-CCIW selection last season, he will be expected to anchor the Thunder defensive line this season. “Theobald is going to be a solid force for us up front. We are counting on Theo to anchor our defensive line. He is the strongest player on our football team. We expect him to be an impact player for us.” Last year Theobald tallied 37 tackles, including 5-1/2 tackles for loss, with seven quarterback hurries. Junior Nic O’Neal gained valuable experience on the defensive line last year, recording five tackles for lost yardage. This season he could see increased action. “Nic O’Neal earned some valuable playing time last season and we expect him to contribute this year. He can play inside or outside on our defensive line. He will play an important role on the defensive line for us.” Swider notes, “Ryan Dougan, Grant Tallon, Robert Ramsay, Charley Mitchell and Josh Bishop will compete for the remaining spots on the defensive line.” Seniors Steve Lutes and Ryan Hoyt are leading candidates to start at linebacker for the Thunder. Swider mentions, “Lutes and Hoyt are experienced seniors who have shown a lot of leadership. Now we need them to step up on the field.” He adds, “They are perfect examples of our model in recent years, that we don’t fill spots with freshmen.” “Kyle Notch, Jordan Langs and Corey Hart will be competing with Lutes for time at outside linebacker,” notes Swider. He adds, “Mike Dozeman, JD East, Joey Anderson, Jordan Chapman, and Austin Driggers will compete with Hoyt at inside linebacker.” At cornerback, senior Tyler Langs is an experienced veteran who is slated for his third season as a starter. He recorded 79 tackles last year, with 62 solo stops and tied for the team lead with five interceptions, adding seven pass break-ups. Swider says of him, “Tyler is a great player with great instincts. He is an athletic kid who brings a lot of experience as he prepares for his third season as a starter for us.” Swider mentions, “At the other cornerback spot alongside Tyler we have three guys who will compete for that position: Bryan McBroom, Tim Shaw and Buddy Legens.” The Thunder mentor continues, “Brian Hollett comes back with some experience at safety. He saw time in our nickel package and he did a great job for us in the playoffs.” Hollett recorded 25 tackles last season, with 17 solo tackles and four pass break-ups. Swider concludes of his defensive backs, “Brian Mullen, Jon Sesso and Brian Leffler will also compete for time at the other safety position.” SPECIAL TEAMS: Sophomore Scott Roche will compete with Tom Aagaard and Dan DeMerchant for the kicker position that had been filled by Tim Ellingsen, an All-CCIW pick last season. Sean Norris will return to his role as Wheaton’s punter this season. Last year, Norris averaged 34.1 yards per punt, with nine kicks inside the 20-yard line. With the use of Norris’ foot Wheaton had a net average of 33 yards per punt last season, holding opponents to nearly one yard per return. With the loss of All-American return man Pete Ittersagen, there are several players who could contribute on kick and punt returns. “Freddy Ellis, Tyler Langs, Teddy Watkins and Drew Johnson are the guys we expect to be in the mix for returns,” mentions Swider. Swider says of the newcomers to the Thunder program this year, “We have 32 players in the incoming freshmen class. This in an excellent class with a lot of depth. Since taking over the program in 1996, Swider has posted a 107-32 record with a 77.0% winning percentage, which ranks him first all-time in both categories among Wheaton’s 21 head football coaches. He also holds the seventh-highest winning percentage of any active Division III coach and the 12th-highest winning percentage of any coach in Division III history with 10 or more years of experience. During Swider’s tenure as head coach, the program has produced 25 All-Americans and 141 All-Conference players. In 2008, Swider picked up his 105th career victory to pass Harve Chrouser’s school record in a 14-0 win over Trine University on Nov. 22. The Thunder posted an 11-3 record that year as they qualified for the NCAA Division III Playoffs and reached the national semifinals for the first time in team history. Wheaton finished the year ranked No. 4 nationally and the team broke 17 single-season and career records on the season. Swider was selected as the CCIW Coach of the Year for the second straight year. He also was chosen as the Division III North Region “Coach of the Year” by the American Football Coaches Association and Football Gazette. Wheaton is 170-59-1 since Swider joined the coaching staff in 1985. He took over the head coaching reins from J.R. Bishop, who coached from 1982-95. Swider also serves as a motivational speaker to a variety of groups and he is a director for the Bishop-Dullaghan summer football camps. A former quarterback who threw for 1,933 yards and 15 touchdowns in four seasons, Swider graduated from Wheaton in 1977. In 1978, he earned a Master’s degree at Indiana University. From 1978-85, he coached at Westminster Schools of Atlanta, a highly-respected college preparatory school. Westminster won the Class AAA State title in 1978 and made the state playoffs in three other seasons while he was there. It will be the seventh season he serves as the defensive coordinator while continuing his role as linebackers coach, a position he has held at Wheaton since the 1995 season. Sandberg also serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator. During his time as an assistant coach, he has coached five All-Americans and 21 All-Conference honorees. Prior to joining the Wheaton staff, Sandberg coached at Georgetown College (Ky.) in 1993-94 and Aurora University in 1991. A 1991 graduate of Wheaton, Sandberg played defensive back for Wheaton from 1987-90. During his career he served as a 1990 team captain, he was a two-time All-CCIW selection, and as a senior received the James A. Parmalee “Most Respected” Player Award. JOE DAVIS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR/QUARTERBACKS COACH Joe Davis joins the Wheaton football staff for the 2009 season, as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Davis came to Wheaton from North Park University where he has spent the previous three years as the associate head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Under his tutelage, North Park quarterback Shelby Wood set several school career records and he also established several new single-season records. Davis is a native of Brighton, Michigan and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Adrian College in 2002. He received a Master’s Degree in sports administration from Wayne State University (Mich.) in 2005. Prior to his time on the North Park coaching staff, he spent three seasons as the quarterbacks coach at Wayne State. In his time as a quarterback for the Adrian football team, Davis graduated as the school’s record holder in eight different passing categories. Among the records he set was the Bulldogs’ record for single-season passing yardage, throwing for 2,123 yards in the 1999 season. He earned Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) All-Conference honors in 2001. Following his collegiate career, Davis played professionally for the Vienna Rangers in Austria where he earned All-Euro honors in 2003, leading the league in touchdown passes. He also spent two seasons between the National Indoor Football League and the Arena Football League. He also saw time with the Lubbock Lonestars, Evansville Bluecats and in the AFL with the Green Bay Blizzard and the Columbus Destroyers. WALT WHITEHEAD OFFENSIVE LINE COACH Offensive line coach Walt Whitehead returns to the Wheaton sideline for his 14th season with the program. In his third stint at Wheaton, Whitehead was previously with the program from 1990-93 and again in 1999-2006. At the college level, Whitehead has coached 15 All-Americans and in his time at Wheaton, he has mentored 15 CCIW All-Conference players. Whitehead played at Purdue University from 1966-69 and was a graduate assistant there in the spring of 1970 while also being an assistant coach at Southwestern High School. During his career at Purdue, Whitehead was a member of the 1967 Rose Bowl team, and played in the 1969 North-South Shrine Bowl. He also was awarded the Leonard Wilson “Most Respected” Player Award in 1969, and at the completion of his final season played in the 1970 Hula Bowl. Whitehead’s 40-year coaching career continued as a head coach at Jefferson Morgan High School (Pa.) in 1972-73 and followed with a two-year stint at Brownsville High School (Pa.). From 1976-88, he was defensive coordinator at Lehigh University and was a scout for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1988-89. He was head coach at Carlisle High School (Pa.) in 1994-95. Walt and his wife Melissa have two children - Zak and Morgan. 2009 Thunder Football - 9 2009 WHEATON FOOTBALL YEARBOOK Assistant Coaches KEITH BISHOP RECEIVERS COACH NCAA and CCIW record-setter Keith Bishop begins his 16th season as an assistant coach at Wheaton and his third as a receivers coach. Bishop spent 13 years as Wheaton’s quarterbacks coach. Since 1992, Bishop has coached one All-American for the Thunder and 13 All-Conference players. A 1986 Wheaton grad, Bishop was a three-time All-American, as well as Wheaton’s career passing and total offense leader. He holds the CCIW records for single-season passing yards, career passing yards, career total yardage and single-season total yardage. He is among the alltime leaders in NCAA Division III for career passing yards per game and passing yards. In 1987, he signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings. GEOFF DARTT TIGHT ENDS/OFFENSIVE TACKLES COACH Geoff Dartt is in his second season as an assistant coach at Wheaton, coaching the Thunder tight ends and offensive tackles. Dartt is a 2008 graduate of Mount Union College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and a Health minor. Dartt was a two-year starter for the Purple Raiders, playing in 2002 and again from 2004-07 as he was a part of three Mount Union National Championship teams (2002, 2005 and 2006). In the Purple Raiders’ National runnerup season of 2007, he was named as a Second Team All-OAC offensive line selection. JEFF PELTZ DEFENSIVE LINE COACH Jeff Peltz, a 1981 Wheaton graduate, has coached the Wheaton defensive line for the past 27 years. He has coached seven AllAmericans and over 42 All-Conference players in his tenure. Peltz captained the 1980 football team and earned All-CCIW Second Team honors in 1979 and 1980. He is Wheaton’s career sack leader with 37 and set the former single-season sacks record of 14 in 1978, a record which stood until 1995. In 2003, Jeff was inducted into Wheaton’s “Hall of Honor” as a player. Coach Peltz and Gary Lavanchy also organize the Wheaton Football Missions trips that take place over spring break. Jeff and his wife, Nancy, a former Olympic speedskater, have three children and live in Wheaton. LEN VANDEN BOS RUNNING BACKS AND SPECIAL TEAMS COACH len Vanden Bos is entering his second year as running backs coach and special teams coordinator and his 11th year overall on the Wheaton coaching staff. Vanden Bos was previously a Wheaton assistant coach from 1993-2001, coaching the program’s defensive backs before returning for the 2008 season. Vanden Bos earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Western Michigan University in 1986. He began his coaching career at Kalamazoo Christian High School (1983-84). He served as a graduate assistant coach at Western Michigan in 1985 and he spent two seasons (1986-87) as a graduate assistant at Rice University. He was the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Albion College (1988-90) and served as the defensive backs coach at Western Kentucky University in 1991 and 1992. Following his tenure at Wheaton from 1993 to 2001, he returned to the CCIW to serve as the defensive backs coach at North Central in 2003. He has previously served on the coaching staff at Maryvale High School in Cheektowaga, New York, working with the Flyers’ football program during the 2006 season. Richbart earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from Wheaton in 2006. Adam and his wife Michelle, a 2008 Wheaton graduate and two-sport athlete, currently reside in the Wheaton area. Kirk sundberg offensive ASSISTANT COACH Kirk Sundberg, a four-year letterwinner at Wheaton, remains with the program in his second season as an offensive assistant coach. Sundberg graduated from Wheaton in 2007 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. In addition to his duties with the Thunder coaching staff, he works at nearby Wheaton Warrenville-South High School. Sundberg earned Second Team All-CCIW recognition at tight end his senior year, with 12 catches for 115 yards, making five touchdown receptions. In four seasons, with two years as a fullback and two years at tight end, Sundberg collected 51 rushing yards and he caught 21 career passes for 211 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Shane Woodward DeFensive ASSISTANT COACH/OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS COACH Shane Woodward is in his first year on the Wheaton College football staff assisting with the outside linebackers. Woodward was a three-year starter for the Thunder football team and was a co-captain in his senior year in 2008, when he achieved Second Team All-Conference recognition. Mike Freeland STUDENT ASSISTANT/SCOUT TEAMS Mike Freeland is in his second year of working with the defense and scout teams. Freeland played football for Wheaton College his freshman season before an injury ended his playing career. GARY LAVANCHY SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR Gary LaVanchy will serve as Wheaton’s Spiritual Director this season. LaVanchy, who also serves as the college’s coordinator of Discipleship Small Groups will oversee the team’s small groups and weekly Friday chapels, as well as coordinate the Wheaton Football Ministry Partnership trips with assistant coach and co-founder Jeff Peltz. This organization gives the football team the opportunity to go on a spring break football ministry trip to foreign countries. A 1998 Wheaton graduate, LaVanchy has been a part of the Wheaton Coaching Staff for 12 years, coaching the wide receivers for nine seasons and serving as the tight ends coach for one year. During his tenure, he has coached two All-Americans, along with 16 All-Conference performers. LaVanchy ran track for two years at the Missouri University of Science and Technology before working in community development in Papua New Guinea. Dr. Watt graduated from Wheaton with a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry. As a student-athlete at Wheaton he finished seventh at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships in the all-around and earned a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was inducted into the Wheaton Athletics Department’s “Hall of Honor” for his accomplishments with the gymnastics program. He received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School. He completed an internship and a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Illinois Hospital. Dr. Watt has been in private practice in DuPage County since 1985, joining Orthopaedic Associates of DuPage in 1990. Dr. Matthew Gimre, M.D. Team Health Administrator Dr. Matthew Gimre is in his fifth year as the team health administrator for Wheaton’s athletics teams. Dr. Gimre graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He went on to earn his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1997 and completed his residency in family practice at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois, followed by a fellowship in sports medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2000. Dr. Paul Callaway Team Physical Therapist Paul Callaway is in his fifth year as a physical therapist, working with Wheaton’s student-athletes. Dr. Callaway graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1982 and received his PhD in Sports Physiology in 2000. He was the first Director of Physical Therapy for the PGA Tour from 1984-87 before opening his independent physical therapy practice in Chicago’s western suburbs. The CCIW, recognized as one of the “Best Small-College Conferences in the Nation,” has seen its share of success throughout its time, with 35 NCAA Division III national championships in 11 different sports won by our member schools. Since the 1991-92 academic year, the CCIW has remained consistent in its membership with eight academically superior institutions, including Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan, Millikin, North Central, North Park and Wheaton. In 2007, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, located in Terre Haute, Ind., joined the CCIW as an associate member for men’s and women’s swimming. GAME #1 - WHEATON 10, BETHEL 7 Wheaton was a 10-7 victor against Bethel University (Minn.), under wet conditions, in the season-opener. Wheaton took a 3-0 lead with 14:56 left in the second quarter as Tim Ellingsen successfully booted a 22-yard field goal in tough field conditions. Bethel punted the ball to Pete Ittersagen at the Wheaton 35-yard line and Ittersagen scampered 65 yards, past several Bethel tacklers, for a touchdown with 8:34 left in the first half to give the Thunder a 10-0 lead. Bethel scored with 39-seconds left in the first half as quarterback Reid Velo threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Bernstetter to cut the Thunder lead to 10-7. Wheaton tallied 127 yards of total offense, rushing for 115 yards, with 12 passing yards. Bethel racked up 202 yards of offense, with 84 passing yards and 118 rushing yards. Rocky Gingg led the Thunder rushing attack with 81 yards on 25 carries. Wheaton Quarterback Sean Norris ran for 44 yards on 10 carries. Linebackers Mike McKinney and Stephen Pagh each made nine tackles to lead a strong Wheaton defensive effort. Jon Ryan had seven total tackles, with two tackles for lost yardage (-13 yards), including a quarterback sack of 12 yards. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one. GAME #2 - WHEATON 48, CONCORDIA (Wis.) 3 Wheaton took to the road for its second game of the 2008 season, a 48-3 win at Concordia University (Wis.). Wheaton jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter and the Thunder owned a 24-3 edge at halftime, en route to the 48-3 victory. Wheaton dominated the Falcons throughout, as the Thunder tallied 514 yards of total offense – averaging 8.4 yards per play. The guests ran for 274 yards and passed for 240. Concordia amassed 109 yards of offense, passing for 20 yards, with 89 rushing yards. Tailback Rocky Gingg carried the ball 14 times for 103 yards. Sean Norris threw for for 206 yards with three touchdowns and Alex Pokorny caught 140 of Wheaton’s 240 receiving yards on his three touchdown catches. Ryan Hoyt led the Thunder defense with six tackles, including two for lost yardage (-18 yards). Jordan Schirman and Pete Ittersagen each had five tackles. Schirman recorded three tackles for lost yardage (-10 yards). Ittersagen and senior Shane Woodward each had an interception. GAME #3 - WHEATON 47, HOPE 7 Wheaton closed out its non-conference schedule with a 47-7 win at Hope College. Wheaton scored a pair of touchdowns in each of the first two quarters to hold a 27-0 lead at halftime. Wheaton led 40-0 at the conclusion of the third quarter as the Thunder scored two more touchdowns in the period. Each team scored once in the fourth quarter to account for the final score. Wheaton accumulated 460 yards of total offense, rushing for 251 yards and passing for 209. Rocky Gingg carried the ball 20 times for 119 yards, with two touchdowns. Sean Norris completed 11 of his 14 passing attempts for 172 yards and three touchdown passes and he ran for 63 yards on seven carries. Alex Pokorny caught six passes for 114 yards, with two touchdowns. Nick Theobald and Daniel Meeh led the Thunder defense with four total tackles each. GAME #4 - WHEATON 56, NORTH PARK 28 Wheaton opened its conference schedule with a 56-28 Homecoming win against North Park at McCully Stadium. The victory against the Vikings marked the 100th career victory in the tenure of head coach Mike Swider. Sean Norris set a new Wheaton single-game record in the victory as he completed 17 of his 18 passing attempts for 239 yards, with three touchdown tosses. Norris’ 94.4% completion percentage is the highest ever in a single-game by a Wheaton quarterback. Rocky Gingg carried the ball 19 times for 118 yards, with three touchdowns. Alex Pokorny caught seven passes for 85 yards, with two touchdowns and Mike Berttucci caught two passes for 62 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown reception. Ben Kuenzle led the Wheaton defense with six total tackles, including 1-1/2 tackles for lost yardage of five yards. Defensive tackle Grant Roszkowiak tallied five total tackles. GAME #5 - WHEATON 26, AUGUSTANA 14 Wheaton improved to 5-0 on the season with a 26-14 win at Augustana thanks to an impressive second-half performance. Wheaton trailed the Vikings 14-13 at halftime. However, a strong second half performance saw the Thunder out-score the hosts 13-0 after the intermission. The Wheaton defense held Augustana to just 45 yards of total offense in the second half. The Thunder offense racked up 213 yards of offense in the second half, including 149 rushing yards. Wheaton accumulated 441 yards of total offense in the game, with 240 passing yards and 201 rushing yards. Rocky Gingg carried the ball 35 times with 136 rushing yards. Sean Norris completed 16 of his 25 passing attempts for 240 yards with one touchdown toss. Norris also ran for 66 yards on nine carries, with one touchdown run. Senior receiver Alex Pokorny caught five passes for 109 yards, with one touchdown reception. Thunder kicker Tim Ellingsen connected on four field goals in the win as he booted scores of 47-yards, 40-yards and a pair of 21-yard kicks. Senior safety Shane Woodward made six tackles, with an interception. Tyler Langs and Jordan Schirman each collected five total tackles. GAME #6 - WHEATON 37, millikin 15 The Thunder returned home to earn a 37-15 victory against Millikin University to improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the CCIW play. Wheaton led the Big Blue 14-0 at halftime thanks to touchdown runs by Rocky Gingg and Sean Norris. Wheaton’s lead increased to 27-0 second half touchdowns by Gingg and Jeff Lake. Millikin scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns and Wheaton kicker Tim Ellingsen booted a 21-yard field goal, while Wheaton’s Kyle Bradley threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Antal to account for the final score. Wheaton tallied 424 yards of total offense, with 327 passing yards and 97 rushing yards. Sean Norris threw for 286 yards, with one touchdown toss. Andy McClain caught five passes for 114 yards and Alex Pokorny caught four passes for 73 yards. Stephen Pagh led the Thunder defense with 12 total tackles and he added a forced fumble. Pete Ittersagen, Mike McKinney and Grant Roszkowiak each made six total tackles and McKinney forced a fumble. GAME #7 - NORTH CENTRAL 44, WHEATON 21 North Central handed Wheaton its first loss of the season in a 44-21 Cardinals’ victory at McCully Stadium. North Central jumped out to a 23-0 halftime lead. Freddy Ellis caught two touchdown passes for the Thunder in the second half and Mike Berttucci also added a touchdown catch for the Thunder as all of Wheaton’s points came in the second half. Wheaton recorded 326 yards of total offense, passing for 244 yards, with 82 rushing yards. Sean Norris threw for 244 yards, with three touchdowns. Alex Pokorny caught five passes for 68 yards and Ellis tallied 74 yards on his two catches that went into the end zone. Jordan Schirman, Jon Ryan and Stephen Pagh each tallied eight total tackles, while Pete Ittersagen and Shane Woodward each made seven tackles. Pagh recorded a team-high two tackles for lost yardage. 2009 Thunder Football - 29 2009 WHEATON FOOTBALL YEARBOOK 2008 Season in Review GAME #8 - ELMHURST 37, WHEATON 23 Wheaton dropped a 37-23 decision at Elmhurst College as the Thunder went to 6-2 on the year and 3-2 in CCIW play. Wheaton jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Tim Ellingsen booted a 23-yard field goal, however, Elmhurst tied the game at 3-3 with a 28-yard field goal. A pair of Elmhurst touchdowns in the second quarter gave the hosts a 16-3 lead. Wheaton cut the Bluejays’ advantage to 16-9 when Thunder Sean Norris threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Danny Hindman. The Bluejays scored on a 39-yard touchdown pass with 4:34 left in the third quarter to give the hosts a 23-9 edge. Elmhurst scored again with 13:02 left in the game. Norris connected with Alex Pokorny on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 8:33 left in the game to cut Elmhurst’s lead to 30-16. Elmhurst extended its lead to 37-16 with 4:15 left in regulation with a touchdown pass. Rocky Gingg reached the end zone on a two-yard touchdown run with 1:39 left in the game as Wheaton cut the lead to 37-23. Norris threw for for 259 yards, with two touchdown tosses. Pokorny caught 10 passes for 111 yards, with one touchdown. Stephen Pagh collected 10 total tackles, including six solo stops, with a quarterback sack. Defensive tackle Grant Roszkowiak was in on 10 total tackles, with a tackle for lost yardage (-1 yard). Defensive end Aaron Reyes made nine total tackles. GAME #9 - Wheaton 44, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 10 The Thunder closed out the home portion of its regular season schedule with a 44-10 victory against Illinois Wesleyan at McCully Stadium. Wheaton led 21-3 at halftime as receiver Alex Pokorny made two touchdown catches and Rocky Gingg had a touchdown run. In the second half, Tim Ellingsen kicked a field goal, Pokorny added his third touchdown catch of the day, Gingg ran into the endzone for a second time and Dan Svendsen caught a touchdown pass late in the game. Wheaton amassed 448 yards of offense, with 264 passing yards and 184 yards on the ground. Norris completed 12 of his 22 passing attempts for 249 yards, with three touchdown tosses. Pokorny caught six passes for 141 yards; with three trips into the end zone. Gingg ran for 123 yards, on 30 carries, with two touchdown runs. Jordan Schirman, Tyler Langs, Ben Kuenzle, Nick Theobald and Mike McKinney each collected a team-high five total tackles to lead the Wheaton defense. McKinney and Jon Ryan each tallied 1-1/2 tackles for lost yardage. Pete Ittersagen and Shane Woodward each recorded an interception, with two pass break-ups. GAME #10 - Wheaton 51, CARTHAGE 24 Wheaton closed out its regular season with a 51-24 win at Carthage. Wheaton jumped out to an early lead against the Red Men and never looked back as the Thunder threw four first-half touchdown passes to hold a 27-3 lead at halftime. Wheaton put 24 more points on the scoreboard in the second half, led by 14 points on Rocky Gingg touchdown runs following halftime. Wheaton tallied 547 yards of total offense with a balanced attack that included 305 passing yards and 242 rushing yards. Norris completed 12 of his 16 passes for 284 yards, with four touchdowns. Alex Pokorny caught six passes for 183 yards, with two touchdowns, while Mike Berttucci caught three passes, with two touchdowns for 72 yards. Andrew Hershey ran for 110 yards on 13 carries and Gingg carried the ball 21 times for 98 yards, with two touchdowns. Jordan Schirman led the Thunder with a team-high 11 total tackles. Cornerback Tyler Langs made nine tackles. Linebacker Stephen Pagh tallied seven tackles, with an interception, while Shane Woodward also contributed an interception. GAME #11 - WHEATON 14, TRINE 0 (NCAA Rd. 1) Wheaton earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs and made the most of the oppoportunity. The Thunder opened its playoff run with a 14-0 victory at Trine University. Sean Norris gave Wheaton a 7-0 lead by scoring on a two-yard quarterback keeper with 3:49 left in the half. Wheaton’s lead remained 7-0 as the two teams went into the locker room at halftime. After halftime, Wheaton dominated the line of scrimmage and stuffed the Trine rushing game, allowing only 66 yards on 31 carries in the contest. Mid-way through the third quarter, Alex Pokorny caught a 50-yard pass that would go on to set up his six-yard touchdown reception with 8:08 left in the quarter to account for the 14-0 final outcome. Norris finished the game with 23 completions on 39 attempts for 315 yards with one touchdown. Pokorny led the wide receivers with seven catches for 122 yards and a touchdown while Freddy Ellis tallied six catches for 100 yards. Rocky Gingg led Wheaton’s rushing attack with 111 yards on 24 carries, including a long run of 45 yards. Defensively, Wheaton tallied six sacks on the game. Tyler Langs led Wheaton with nine tackles, two sacks and an interception. Pete Ittersagen tallied seven tackles and Aaron Reyes had seven tackles and 1-1/2 sacks. GAME #12 - Wheaton 59, WABASH 28 (NCAA Rd. 2) Wheaton played well in all facets of the game to earn a 59-28 victory at Wabash in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. Wheaton tallied 504 yards of offense, with 300 passing yards and 204 yards on the ground. The Thunder defense held the potent Wabash offense to a season-low 266 total yards as the Little Giants passéd for 230 yards, with 36 rushing yards. Wheaton led 14-7 after one quarter thanks to a 12-yard touchdown catch by Jeff Lake and an electrifying 70-yard punt return for a touchdown by Pete Ittersagen. Jon Ryan tallied a sack and senior safety Shane Woodward recorded an interception. 2009 Thunder Football - 30 2009 WHEATON FOOTBALL YEARBOOK 2008 Season in Review GAME #13 - Wheaton 45, FRANKLIN 28 (NCAA quarters) The Thunder defeated Franklin College 45-28 in the NCAA Division III Playoff Quarterfinals. The win sent Wheaton to the National Semifinals for the first time in school history. Wheaton’s defense and special teams played a key role, scoring 17 points in the win. Senior Pete Ittersagen returned a first-quarter interception 52 yards for a touchdown and he returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Senior Tim Ellingsen contributed a 41-yard field goal as well. Wheaton recorded 325 yards of offense, with 217 rushing yards and 108 passing yards. Franklin tallied 446 yards of offense, passing for 289 yards and rushing for 157 yards. Rocky Gingg carried the ball 26 times for 145 yards, with two touchdowns. Sean Norris completed 11 of his 18 passing attempts for 108 yards, with two touchdown passes. Alex Pokorny caught four passes for 49 yards. Ittersagen led the Thunder defense with 10 tackles, including eight solo hits and the interception return for a touchdown. Mike McKinney made nine total tackles, with an interception. UNION 45, WHEATON 24 (NCAA Semis) Wheaton’s tremendous playoff run ended in a 45-24 loss at top-ranked Mount Union College in the Semifinals of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. The Thunder offense amassed 346 yards of offense, which is the most any team had compiled against Mount Union’s defense at that point in the season. Wheaton passed for 256 yards and ran for 90 yards in the game. Sean Norris completed 16 of his 34 passing attempts for 248 yards, with two touchdowns. Alex Pokorny caught six passes for 81 yards, with two touchdowns. Linebacker Jon Ryan tallied 10 total tackles, with a sack. Tyler Langs and Stephen Pagh each made nine total tackles. Wheaton leads the overall series with a 51-36-3 all-time record. Since the introduction of the Little Brass Bell in 1946, Wheaton has won 44 of the 59 games played. According to Legend, “The Bell” first appeared in New York in the early 1800’s. In 1839, a New England family headed westward carrying “The Bell” and settled in DuPage County. “The Bell” became part of the political bickering between Naperville and Wheaton over the location of the DuPage County Courthouse. In 1857, Wheaton began a campaign to assume the leadership of the county and 10 years later officially gained control. However, the city of Naperville refused to turn over the county records to Wheaton. At 4 AM one July morning, according to the DuPage County Guide, Wheaton struck back with a raid on the Naperville courthouse which netted the records in question. From his home opposite the courthouse, Naperville resident Herom H. Cody awoke to see men carrying off armfuls of documents. Before the Congregational Church bell could sound the alarm, the culprits had fled. The Brass Bell was among the items removed. At the end of the century, “The Bell” came into the possession of a farmer living between the two cities whose sons both wanted to attend college. It was agreed that the son who won a coin toss could attend North Central, while the other would go to Wheaton. Shortly afterwards, the father died and in the division of the estate, the brother attending North Central inherited the “Little Brass Bell.” So “The Bell” left the political arena to enter the world of campus loyalties. CB/PR Alex Pokorny......... WR Wheaton Football Ministry Partnership 2009 marked the 10th consecutive mission trip led by Coach LaVanchy and Coach Peltz. The Wheaton Football Ministry Partnership (WFMP) has continued to grow each year. In 2009 five groups traveled, representing Wheaton in Senegal, South Africa and Botswana. Previous Trips In 2000 the first WFMP group traveled to Venezuela, a small South American nation situated on the Equator, to assist football alumni Andy Shedd and Jeff Wardle. While in Rubio, the group renovated three indigenous church buildings, hosted athletic clinics, taught ESL lessons, and shared personal testimonies with local children. In 2001, the team went to Dakar, Senegal (a West African nation) to assist missionary Rod Duttweiler (’87) and others from that community. The group of 43 divided into smaller teams to tackle their projects. A group trimmed bushes and trees and dug two trenches that required the removal of three boulders. Another group made improvements at a local academy and helped facilitate a school field day. The third group joined the International Society for Development, running a softball ministry, passing out Christian literature and cassettes, and aiding in the construction of a septic field. WFMP reached a third continent in 2002 when the team traveled to Arad, Romania, to partner with Maranata Church and the work of ’57 alum Don Church. The team served a local orphanage, cleaned up three community playgrounds, and built a fourth playground for the church. In addition to physical work, the team toured the city of 150,000 with its mayor (also pastor of the Maranata Church), led worship services, and taught football to some of the youth. In 2003, the group of 71 people was divided into two smaller groups: returning to Senegal and Romania. The Senegal team again assisted Rod and Kathy Duttweiler. The group’s efforts enabled the ministries of Dakar Academy, Wycliffe Bible Translators and the International Society for Development. The Romania team partnered with Maranata Church, to accomplish three tasks: building a playground, along with picnic tables, landscaping a city park and removing a 60-foot section of clogged sewer line and then replacing the section with new sewer lines and hot water lines. 2004 saw 87 people involved in the project that again required two destinations. The familiar trek to Romania was made, though the group was divided into two groups with one group in Timisoara and the other in the villages of Petris and Hateg. The group in Timisoara worked at completing construction of the Vox Domini Church. In Hateg, the group cleaned up the village and also lead a youth meeting at the church—complete with a message, testimony and games. The Senegal group worked on various projects at the Phare, a property that provides a Bible training center, mission center, stores, and rest area for missionaries. In 2005, the group consisted of 58 people that were divided into two groups as one returned to Timisoara, Romania and the other went to Dakar, Senegal. The group in Timisoara again teamed with Vox Domini Church. The group had two projects. The first was to revive a city park by building a playground for the local children. The second project was an outreach to University students. Among the tasks for the group of 34 in Senegal was construction of a fence, painting, insulating a generator shed, painting lines on a basketball court, and leading chapels and devotions for youth. In addition to these projects, the group created a new partnership with the community of Ouakam and helped them to renovate an 88-year-old school building. In 2006, the WFMP expanded into three groups, travelling to Kankan, Guinea; Timisoara, Romania and Dakar, Senegal. The group in Guniea spent most of its time preparing and teaching four classes at the university of 4,000 students, teaching lessons on History of the United States, on sports training, and on the economics of starting a small business. They held a social gathering with the 20-25 Christian students in the town and also painted swing set frames and volleyball standards; later installing them at two church schools. The group of 27 that traveled to Senegal helped with renovations, led chapels and devotions for area youngsters and spent time in the community of Ouakam where they assisted in construction of a new church. A group of 12 Wheaton players and two leaders once again partnered with Vox Domini church for the trip to Romania. They installed playground equipment for the church pre-school in the morning and in the afternoon they spent time at the nearby Romanian Christian University. In 2007, the WFMP continued with three groups, returning to Timisoura, Romania and Dakar, Senegal while also taking its first trip to Malutshini, South Africa. The 14-person group that traveled to South Africa partnered with Wheaton football alum John David Borgman (‘64) and his wife Barb. The focus of their work is ministering to AIDS orphans, as they assist in running an orphange. The group renovated an abandoned building near the local school into an area for local orphans to use. The group that travelled to Senegal again partnered with alum Rod Duttweiler. The group worked on various projects through out their facility to help build it up and assist in his ministry of church planting and discipleship. In Romania, the group painted the sanctuary of the church. They also went to the 45,000-student university, inviting them to events that the group used to reach out to the area youth. In 2008, the WFMP took four trips to: Kankan, Guinea; Nouakchott, Mauritania; Loskop, South Africa and Dakar, Sengal. Three of the trips went during Wheaton’s Spring Break and the Dakar trip had to be delayed to a multi-country Islamic conference that shut down the Dakar airport. The group that travelled to South Africa worked at remodeling and upgrading an area orphanage. The Guinea group interacted with area university students, teaching classes as well as holding games of basketball, volleyball and soccer in ministering to them. In Mauritania, they helped build the foundation for a new worship center and home. They also worked with special needs youths from the area. Members of the group also interacted with students at the local university and taught English classes. In Dakar, they built a new basketball court at the Phare conference center and did other work at the Dakar Academy. 2009 WHEATON FOOTBALL YEARBOOK Wheaton Football Ministry Partnership - Continued 2009 Trips By Jeff Peltz and Gary LaVanchy For the 10th consecutive spring break, we partnered with former Wheaton Football players’ missionaries overseas to be involved in their work and experience first hand how each continues to be obedient to God’s calling in their lives and see the milestone marked in our life. In 2000, starting with Venezuela, we have travelled to Romania, Senegal, Mauritania, Botswana, Guinea, and South Africa, with over 600 players and leaders. This year was as exciting as ever. We took 70 players, going to five different locations in Africa. Each of these areas offered unique experiences in culture, sights and smells as well as seeing God’s hand in a different nation. Seeing their lives and culture with such contrast to what we are used to was an education in itself. These trip projects have a varying degree of being work related to being very relational among those we are around. SENEGAL: This 97% Muslim country had three groups at three different locations. Dakar Academy – This group was all about being involved in the students’ lives. A school with a mix of missionary kids, Senegalese kids, and kids whose families are employed overseas, it offered a variety of opportunities to do devotionals, youth nights, carnival activities, and building a tree house on the property to hang out in. MIV – This group travelled inland about two hours into Senegal to stay at an orphanage of 80 kids. The tangible projects they did were to landscape, plant nine trees, paint the chapel and complete a bakery. The most profound opportunity they had were the relationships they built with the kids and adults. The Phare – We have had an eight-year involvement at this three acre Christian conference center in Dakar. From the first year there was a check list of projects. As one was completed, the chain reaction of other projects began. There is not a building or wall that has not seen a Wheaton Football player swinging a sledge hammer to demolish it or to help build it back to its intended use. This is some good ole fashion sweat equity that our players have poured into this place to become a better facility, used to house pastors, missionaries and hold conferences … for the Glory of God. SOUTH AFRICA – With the Drakensburg Mountains in the background, we went to work at “The Cottages”, an orphanage of about 26 kids, each of whom had their parents die of AIDS. There is a great need among the Zulu nation with unemployment and living a healthy lifestyle. We had two major projects; one was building a large wooden playground set equipped with swings, slides and platforms. Up to that point all they had was a tire swing and small metal monkey bars. We also helped install a 6’ fence around a five acre orphanage, placing poles in concrete, pounding others, equaling about 700 yds. in length. As the kids would come back from school by 3pm, then it became a draw between playing and working. We also won our second “World Cup” soccer match between the teachers (who always play soccer) and the U.S. (us who always play football). BOTSWANA – This is the first time we visited this country and to partner with players from Wabash College. Each day the group of guys would take day trips to area villages to play soccer, do mini sport camps, and then read Bible stories to the group of young athletes. At times they would also tell the stories through skits they put together. A few of the groups had the privilege to visit local prisons and minister through sports, story and song to the men. One amazing event happened in Sahitwa. Kids came from miles around to see our American athletes. It was a rainy day so they had to do the sports activities inside. After the sports, they all memorized Genesis 1 together. What a great event to be a part of. Two of those signings came in back-to-back seasons in 2008 and 2009. On April 27, 2008 the Philadelphia Eagles selected Wheaton defensive end Andy Studebaker with the 37th pick of the sixth round in the 2008 NFL Draft. With his selection, Studebaker became the first player from Wheaton taken in the NFL draft during the draft’s modern era and the first Wheaton player drafted since the 1960’s. Following the conclusion of the 2009 NFL Draft, Wheaton cornerback Pete Ittersagen was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars on April 26, 2009. Following a strong 2008 training camp with the Eagles, Studebaker was signed to Philadelphia’s practice squad where he trained and learned the Eagles’ system. On November 17, 2008, Studebaker was signed off the Eagles’ practice squad by the Kansas City Chiefs. After a strong off-season with the Chiefs, Studebaker entered Kansas City’s training camp and early into the camp was listed second on the team’s depth chart at outside linebacker. Studebaker earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Health Science from Wheaton in May 2008. In four seasons as a defensive end for the Thunder, Studebaker tallied 111 total tackles, with 50-1/2 tackles for lost yardage (-292 yards), including 30 quarterback sacks. He played in five games as a senior in 2007, before his campaign was cut short by a foot injury. In those five games, the unanimous preseason All-American made 12 tackles, with 6-1/2 tackles for lost yardage (-52 yards), including five quarterback sacks (-45 yards). As a junior in 2006, Studebaker was selected as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Defensive Player of the Year and was tabbed as a First Team All-American and the North Region Defensive Player of the Year by D3Football.com. He also earned Second Team AllAmerican honors on the 2006 AP Little All-American team and was a Football Gazette Division III All-American. In that junior campaign he led the CCIW with 17-1/2 (-142 yards) quarterback sacks and was also the league leader in tackles for lost yardage with 25-1/2 (-161 yards). His 17-1/2 sacks tied the school record for sacks in a single season, and were the most of any player at any NCAA level in 2006. Ittersagen joined the Jaguars shortly after his signing and had a strong 2009 training camp as a defensive back and particularly on special teams. Photo by Dan VanSlyke/Jacksonville Jaguars Ittersagen, a three-time All-American for the Thunder, graduated from Wheaton in December of 2008 with a degree in Business and Economics. A three-time All-American, Ittersagen was been a standout at both cornerback and return specialist. His 60 career passes defended, is fifth alltime in Division III history in the category. Ittersagen’s five career punt returns for a touchdown established a new school record and his nine career touchdown returns (five punt, three interception and one kick) also set a Wheaton College record. He is the program’s all-time leader in punt return yardage with 65 punts returns for 1,075 yards (16.5 YPR). The four-time All-Conference selection at cornerback recorded 252 career tackles, with 189 solo stops. In 2008, Ittersagen concluded his brilliant Wheaton career as a unanimous Division III All-American with a selection to the Associated Press’ “Little All-American Team”, as a First Team honoree. He was also recognized as a First Team Division III All-American by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) for the second-consecutive year and was named a First Team All-American at cornerback and a Second Team pick as a kick returner by D3football.com. He was named the North Region “Defensive Player of the Year” by D3football.com. He returned 25 punts for a school record 464 yards this season, averaging 18.6 yards per return, with two returned for a touchdown. He finished the season ranked second in Division III in yards per punt return. Ittersagen helped lead Wheaton to its first-ever NCAA Division III Playoff Semifinal appearance with three touchdown returns in the team’s four postseason games. 2009 Thunder Football - 46 2009 WHEATON FOOTBALL YEARBOOK McCully Stadium Home of Thunder Football McCully Stadium is the longtime home of Wheaton football and track and field. Previously known as New Lawson Field, the field was renamed McCully Field in 1956, when a concrete grandstand with a seating capacity of 4,100 was added. The facility became known as McCully Stadium in 2006 to reflect the addition of lights, a new playing surface for football and a newly re-surfaced synthetic track around the playing field. Wheaton has compiled a record of 44-5 since 2000 at McCully Stadium, including 24 consecutive victories from October 6, 2001 to November 12, 2005. In 2004 McCully Stadium received a new playing surface, as state-of-the-art artificial grass from FieldTurf was installed. In the fall of 2005 lights were added to further improve the facility for games and practices and the track around the playing field was also resurfaced at that time. In 2007, a state- of-the-art high definition video scoreboard was added to the west end of the stadium. The stadium provides seating for approximately 4,000 fans. A concession area, restrooms and team meeting rooms are located under the grandstand. Crowning the home grandstand is a pressbox facility. The facility includes two radio booths and seating for media, statisticians and other support staff. Coaches and video personnel from each team can witness the game from the privacy of enclosed booths, located on each side of the pressbox. The stadium was named in honor of former Wheaton gridder Ed McCully as a tribute to his extraordinary bravery in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. McCully was a former Wheaton football player and 1949 graduate of Wheaton College. Ed McCully and Jim Elliot served as missionaries to the fierce Auca Indians in the jungles of Ecuador. On January 3, 1956, these men landed their plane on a narrow strip of beach near the Auca territory. After building a tree house and establishing two-way radio contact with their wives, they had a brief encounter with the Auca Indian tribe. Two days later the team was found speared to death by this tribe on the beach not far from where they had landed. By the grace of God the story did not end there.
