A Message from the Superintendent
Jefferson Township Local Schools’ students can earn college
credit at high school by
taking dual credit!
This is the third school year that
Jefferson Township High School
students are able to take dual credit
courses. Dual enrollment is a partnership
with Sinclair Community College and
Jefferson Township High School that
offers college-level courses at our high
school. This program allows students to
earn both high school and college credit
concurrently.
Our school district joins a number of
others — including Centerville, West
Carrollton, Hamilton, Mason, Franklin
and Lebanon — to offer the hybrid
2013/2014 Gates Millenium Scholarship Applicants
classes. It is our hope to give students a
jump on collegiate work and cut down on future tuition costs for families.
Dual credit differs from the post-secondary option, where high school students travel to a local college or
university to take classes during the school day. Jefferson Township High School students enrolled in dual
credit courses do not have to leave the high school building, and the college-level classes are taught online as
well as by high school staffers.
The downfall of post-secondary is that they miss out because they have to leave for a few periods and a lot of
students and parents don’t want to do that.
Jefferson Township Local Schools is working through Sinclair Community College to bring its dual credit
program to fruition. Tuition cost to take a three-credit hour class at the high school would be $257.10
and there may be a $100 textbook fee in some classes. However, due to the Jefferson Township Board of
Education’s emphasis on student learning and growth, the entire cost of tuition and textbooks is 100% free
for Jefferson Township students and families.
Sinclair has the lowest tuition rate and a large inventory of courses that transfer to other schools throughout
Ohio. Students may enroll in English, college-level algebra or trigonometry, psychology, art history, and
introduction courses to biology, physics, anatomy or physiology classes. This appeals to many parents who
see how expensive college is and they see an opportunity to get some of these courses out of the way, which is
a huge advantage.
The Jefferson Township Local Schools Dual Credit program has grown each year. This school year, over
30 students -- from 9th grade thru 12th grade -- are enrolled in the program. With the financial situation in
our country and our community, many parents are looking long-term. Also, the easy transfer of credits from
Sinclair to other colleges or universities is a draw for students and their families. For example, if our students
take a class and get the Sinclair credit but decide to go to UD, Wright State, or Central State, that class is
already done. They could almost have their freshman year (of college) finished as a senior in high school.
2
It is a rigorous program, but the bottom line is Jefferson Township students are earning college credit and
getting a great head start towards obtaining a college degree.
