Just Rain In The Drain Commissioner Maffeo Recommends Healthy Water Habits Joliet Township has a storm water management plan, which is partially under the administration of Will County through the Will County Storm Water Management Planning Committee. Commissioner Maffeo is committed to educating our community on the importance in preserving the water resources in our area. As storm water flows over driveways, lawns, and sidewalks, it picks up debris, chemicals, dirt and other pollutants. These waters then flow directly into storm sewers or other water systems causing polluted runoff which is a threat to our water “D” Construction of Coal City, removing the concrete deck on the Joliet Street Bridge. resources. Please keep the following healthy household habits in mind to help keep our water clean: Vehicles and Garages Lawns and Gardens Use a commercial car wash or wash your car on a lawn or other unpaved surface to minimize the amount of dirty, soapy water flowing into the storm drain, ditch or roadway and eventually into your local water body. Check your car, boat, motorcycle, and other machinery and equipment for leaks and spills. Make repairs as soon as possible. Clean up spilled fluids with an absorbent material like kitty litter or sand and don’t rinse the spills into a nearby storm drain. Recycle used oil and other automotive fluids at participating service stations. Don’t dump these chemicals down the storm drain or dispose of them in your trash. Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly. It is recommended that these chemicals to be used only when it is necessary, and then use them in the recommended amounts. Avoid appling them if the forecast calls for rain, otherwise chemicals will be washed into your local stream. Select native plants and grasses that are drought and pest resistant. Native plants require less water, fertilizer and pesticides. Sweep up yard debris, rather than hosing down areas. Compost or recycle yard waste when possible. Don’t over water your lawn. Water during the cooler times of the day and don’t let water runoff into the storm drain, ditch or roadway, and consider the use of a rain barrel for water conservation. 2 www.JolietTownship.net How Sweet It Is St. Mary Nativity School Receives Award Illinois Recycling Association Acknowledges Efforts St. Mary Nativity School won the Statewide Honor of being chosen as the Outstanding School Recycling program for 2014 by the Illinois Recycling Association. The school is one of the Will County Earth Flag schools. Students and faculty used collection containers throughout the building and recycled approximately 61 pounds of paper per week. Their recycling team has 53 members who organized the recycling activities. This spring, they participated in the TREX’s Plastic Bag Recycling Contest. They successfully collected 450,000 bags and won a recycled plastic bench from TREX for their efforts. Governor Quinn signs “cupcake” law Chloe Stirling started “Hey Cupcake,” a small cupcake business in her parent’s kitchen in Troy, Illinois. Before long, her local county health department shut down the cottage business because it did not operate out of a commercial kitchen and lacked proper licensing. Chloe and her mom went to Springfield and lobbied for a bill to make it easier for small “home kitchen operators” to sell their goods without having so many government regulations. Lawmakers passed a bill that creates a new state business category for people who make less than $1,000 per month from producing food in their own homes to sell either by themselves or for a religious, charitable or nonprofit organization. They can now only be shut down if there is a complaint or health safety issue. Governor Patrick Quinn recently signed the new law in Chloe’s parent’s kitchen where he thanked her for standing up for small entrepreneurs. 3 Preservation Park • Farragut School Playground Governor Quinn congratulates Chloe Sterling on the passage of House Bill 5354 into law. Union Apprenticeship Program Performs Work at Township The Township Government moved into its current location on the north side of the river at Jefferson Street in 1976. The building was previously home to the Mecklen Barge Company. Over the past 5 years, efforts have been underway to update the equipment, infrastructure and décor of the interior of the building. In May of this year, members of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District 14, Local 33, removed wallpaper, repaired plaster walls and painted the lobby, stairwell and the second level foyer area. The Township was very thankful for the support from the Union Apprenticeship Program. Township Board Supports Joliet Park District Foundation Union apprentices prepare walls for painting.
