Despite a challenging economic environment, in 2013–14 the Australian Government invested almost $120 million in our national sporting organisations. In high performance, Australia’s Winning Edge continues to evolve as we target sports with potential to deliver international success and invest more in our most promising athletes. Some highlights in 2013–14 have included: •Campaign Rio — a partnership between the AIS, Australian Olympic Committee and Australian Paralympic Committee to prepare athletes for the Rio Olympic Games. •AIS Centre for Performance Coaching and Leadership — the Centre continues to develop Australia’s coaches and high performance leaders, with a Podium Coach program launched. •AIS Sports Draft — a fast-tracked development program for talented athletes who are interested in transferring to Olympic or Commonwealth Games sports. Our work with sports to reform governance structures and develop their strategic and commercial capabilities also continues. The ASC is determined to create better businesses and we are leading the way with a lean and agile operating model, a new AIS brand, and continued focus on philanthropy through the Australian Sports Foundation. Grassroots participation remains a key priority, with the Australian Government’s announcement of the Sporting Schools program a significant endorsement of community sport. The $100 million program will commence in 2015 — reaching more than 850,000 children — and will enable sports to boost their participation numbers. Australian sport is on a transformative journey. Few periods have been filled with so much activity or so much promise, and I appreciate your hard work and support over the past year. By joining us on this journey you continue to prove your capacity to succeed in this ever-changing sporting landscape. John Wylie AM Chair - Australian Sports Commission National, Oceania and World Champion Sam Wiloughby leading the pack at the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships 3 Executive Summary President’s Report PRESIDENT’S REPORT BARRY KNIGHT In this report, I endeavour to provide a snapshot of what I feel is the continuing journey of BMX. In this year’s report I hope to address some of the foreseeable outcomes which I believe can be achieved heading towards 2020 with the right management controls in place. These are exciting times for the sport with considerable growth over the last eight years. In this period the sport has achieved strong growth from a membership base of 6,800 to now edging 17,000 members. Additionally, our financial growth has also been stable from an organisation facing financial peril eight years ago to one with a strong capital backing which will enable future investment in development across all areas of the business. “ It’s imperative that BMX Australia continues to cement itself on the world stage as we are currently the second largest BMX Nation in the world. The current outlook for BMX Australia under the right business plan can achieve a membership base close to 27,000 by 2020. This is why it’s important for BMX Australia to have a balanced approach in it’s planning for the future. which run at a State and National level. This clearly shows the athlete pathways are working. Part of the vision and the strategic plan heading towards 2020 is set around the BMX Australia High Performance Program (HPP) being transitioned back in-line with the sport following the RIO Olympics. This can only be achieved with the right structures and providing the right support to the current pathways for our athletes going forward. BMX Australia currently invests significantly to the development of the HPP through its event framework, the BMX Australia Development Academy, coach, official and staff development which significantly contributes to the desired high performance outcomes such as World Champions and Olympic medals. It is my opinion there needs to be a strong emphasis on athlete welfare going forward under the new plan. This is a major flaw I see in the current HP program. The Board continues to work with the Australian Sports Commission and in line with the set governance principals on improving the governance of our organisation. BMX Australia is continuing to work closely with the City of Gold Coast Council in the development of the BMX Australia Centre of We need to continue to foster better partnerships with our state organisations including future planning making sure it meets the needs of our members and places the sport in good stead going forward. This may see many diverse initiatives being developed including planning alliances with outside partners. It’s imperative that BMX Australia continues to cement itself on the world stage as we are currently the second largest BMX Nation in the world. I thank the Australian Sports Commission for their continued support we have received as an NSO (National Sporting Organisation) over the years. At the recent UCI World Championships held in Rotterdam, BMX Australia held its head high and continues to punch well above its weight delivering many world plates. A lot of this success must be contributed to the underpinning programs Caroline Buchanan highfives Sprockets during the Sprocket Clinic 4 Executive Summary President’s Report Excellence which will provide a world class facility aimed at developing current and future World Champions and Olympic medallists. Now BMX Australia has decided to tread its own path, this along with reaching memberships numbers outlined earlier I believe it’s timely for the recognition of our athletes and volunteers that BMX Australia start an expanded awards night at the National Championships. This event will be live steamed and there will be a news thread supplied for “free to air” channels. I feel these types of initiatives will boost the exposure of athletes and volunteers to a level they deserve. It is my belief the sport of BMX in Australia is in a strong position with the right management in the areas I have outlined previously. I can only see great things for BMX and our athletes heading towards 2020. The fireworks display as part of the 2014 Oceania Championships in Shepparton, VIC To all the volunteers working throughout the sport at all levels, I thank you for your efforts without you our athletes would be disadvantaged greatly. I wish to thank my fellow Board members for their contribution this year and in particular I would like to thank outgoing Directors Abe Schneider and Sally Howie for their significant contribution over many years. Barry Knight President 5 Executive Summary Vice-President’s Report VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT ANDY MELLISH Wow, what another great year for BMX in Australia! The 2014 National Series, which was shorter than previous years still had strong participation rates. The five rounds of racing were held at Nerang, Westside and finished at Shepparton and was combined with the Continental Championships at the National Championships raced at night with fireworks and a flame show. The 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships this year was held in Shepparton, again we had a large number of riders compete in the event. Once again BMXA introduced new products to the event with both a big screen and live streaming of the event being a big success. With the help of the Shepparton Council this venue will only get better, something the Council has indicated that they wish to do and want to continue to hold events there. “ It’s great news that after the Rio Olympics, BMX Australia will get its High Performance team back under its control. The 2013/2014 Trans Tasman Senior test team unfortunately did not go so well with Australia losing both test matches against the New Zealanders in both the female and male classes. This is the first year Australia has lost both classes in this event and with some of our top riders pulling out due to injury and retiring from the sport, the 2014/2015 series will be a tough one. of promoter groups doing their own thing in each state, but with the announcement at the UCI conference at the World Championships in Rotterdam this year that UCI have been dealing with the Olympic committee and that Freestyle would be in the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo, this should help the sport come together as one. Integration is finally off the table for BMX Australia with BMX Australia moving to it’s own office in Sydney. This move is for the better of the sport of BMX in Australia. It’s great news that after the Rio Olympics, BMX Australia will get its High Performance team back under its control. I would personally like to thank Barry Knight – BMXA President for all the hard work and long hours he has put into the sport of BMX this year, Barry has spent a large amount of his week days working on getting the High Performance team and our sport back under BMX management. I would also like to thank the BMXA office staff of Mark, Lauren, Tiffany and Rebecca for their contribution to the sport of BMX. Our sport relies on a large number of volunteers each year from BMXA board members, State board members, Club committee members, officials, coaches and club volunteers. A big thank you to you all for making our sport what it this. Andy Mellish Vice President Freestyle BMX has been hard work, with a number 2013/2014 Test Team: Jake Bowe, Dylan Scruton, Andrew Hughes, Matthew White, Aislynn Weber, Jessica Lathwell, Sara Jones & Dion Bromley 6 Executive Summary Financial Director’s Report FINANCIAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT SALLY HOWIE BMX EVENTS The 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships were once again a strong event financially. We had the same number of riders compete in 2014 as in 2013. The investment in TV and production increased the cost of the event however this is an ongoing investment into the sport. Prize money equity kicked in for the Elite classes and there was also an increased investment into the Awards Night. The National Series continued to grow although that doesn’t reflect in the dollar income due to the fact there were only five rounds compared to seven the previous year. BMX AUSTRALIA Membership levels are up on previous years giving a strong financial result for BMXA overall. 4 month membership rates are increasing and the BMX Mini Wheeler category is starting to take off. There was more investment put in to Freestyle this year and we continue to become more active in this area moving forward. The Development Academy has kicked off well and our investment in that will continue to grow. As BMXA move into a new year our strong financial position allows the sport to make great strategic choices with regard to our sports future and development. On a personal note – this year brings to a close my involvement in BMX. I have completed 10 years on the BMXA board and overall have been involved at club, national & state level for a grand total of 23 years. It is now time to pass the baton to someone new, and I feel I am leaving the sport in a much stronger position financially than when I took over as BMXA Finance Director. I have very much enjoyed my time in BMX but now onwards and upwards to a new stage of my life. “ As BMXA move into a new year our strong financial position allows the sport to make great strategic choices with regard to our sports future and development. A big thank you to my family & long suffering husband Alastair for their support over the years. I wish the board of BMXA all the best for the future and look forward to seeing it grow even further. Sally Howie Finance Director Development Academy rider Millie Reed heads down the third straight at the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships 7 Executive Summary Events Director’s Report EVENTS DIRECTOR’S REPORT CAMERON MURRAY The BMX Australia events calendar in 2014 consisted of five rounds of the BMX Australia National Series, the Oceania Championships and the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships. In addition, there was also a strong representation of riders as part of TeamAUS at the UCI BMX World Championships. BMX AUSTRALIA NATIONAL SERIES The BMX Australia National Series has seen a steady growth over the last couple of years with over 1,100 riders participating across the series in 2014. TeamAUS had 115 riders travel to Rotterdam for the 2014 UCI BMX World Championships in July. Included in this contingent were six Aussie riders looking to defend their world number 1 titles and a number of other looking to make their mark on the international stage. Over the 6 days, there were nearly 3,000 entries aged between 2 – 65 years, which resulted in 54 National Champions. This would not have been possible without the time and effort of over 100 officials and volunteers, the Shepparton BMX Club, the Greater Shepparton City Council and the local community. For the first time the Nationals were live streamed via Epicentre TV from Thursday through to Saturday which had over 70,000 live views, including viewers from 24 countries including Australia. Special thanks must be given to Subaru for their continued support to drive the growth of this event and the sport of BMX. With a significant amount of media coverage in the lead up to, during and post event we continue to raise the profile of our most significant National annual event both in Australia and throughout the world. “ Riders from every state and territory descended upon Shepparton BMX Club, Victoria, for the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships from April 28 – May 4. Cameron Murray Events Director Elite Mens Moto at the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships at Shepparton BMX Club 9 Executive Summary Coaching Director’s Report COACHING DIRECTOR’S REPORT ANITA WELLS In my newly established role of National Coaching Director, I am responsible for leading and implementing strategies to ensure the sustained success of our sport and teams including the BMXA Development Academy. In addition to leading coaches within the centralised program, my responsibilities also include leading the national framework, working to ensure that the input of all stakeholders is maximised and aligned to the national direction. portal for feedback. This initiative will be rolled out with the next Academy selection process. KEY DELIVERABLES Coaching - CA have returned full administrative function to BMXA. BMXA are currently reviewing all data and files received and will undertake a gap analysis and review of the national coaching pathway. A National Coaching Forum was held during the 2014 Subaru BMXA National Championships event and this is planned to continue on an annual basis. “ The Academy is in the process of developing strategies to underpin the next stage of the athlete’s pathway in line with ASC requirements. Development Academy - The Development Academy has undertaken a number of camps this year including a camp for the Shadow Squad and a pre- Worlds preparatory camp. The Academy is currently putting together a calendar of camps and events for the next 12 months (to be integrated into the launch of the Visual Coaching software that is being prepared to be rolled out to all Academy athletes). Visual Coaching Pro software is being introduced to the Academy with the aim of being a tool for athletes to access their training programs, follow their calendars, provide feedback via athlete diaries, upload training/performance videos and more. Both Academy Coaches will have full access to administer the app and each State Coach will be provided with viewing access to enable them to monitor and support Academy riders as required and utilise it as a Coaching Director Anita Wells with Coaches of the Year: Catherine Hopkins (WA) & Josh Callan (VIC) and HPU Coach Wade Bootes Strategic Development/National Pathway The Academy is in the process of developing strategies to underpin the next stage of the athlete’s pathway in line with ASC requirements and BMX Australia’s vision and values and although the program is up and running, it is still in its infancy and is operating under constant review and reliant on a number of external factors and stakeholders. I am now attending Joint Management Committee meetings represented by BMXA, HPU, CA and ASC, and working within these meetings to implement changes that are in the best interests of rider welfare and the future of our sport. I would like to thank Development Academy Coaches, Luke and Sharon, and the Board for making me feel welcome to the newly appointed role. Anita Wells National Coaching Director 10 Executive Summary NOD’s Report NA TIONAL OFFICIATING DIRECTOR’S REPORT PAUL CONNORS After being appointed into the role earlier this year my first priority was to go through a process and appoint a National Technical Committee. As a result Lyndon Downing (VIC), Neil Cameron (NSW) and Kevin Braybon (SA) were appointed to the newly formed committee. The primary purpose of the National Technical Committee is to work on all technical aspects of the sport including the review of current rule books and suggestions / updates as requested by the State Technical Teams. We have enjoyed a great year in terms of the number of volunteers continuing to put up their hands to assist. As we know a “volunteer is the most valuable resource within our sport and without these people our sport would not survive”. The number of officials have grown to over 2,200 nationally which is around 40% growth year on year. We have also conducted 23 Level 2 courses over the past 12 months. During the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships in Shepparton we conducted a Level 3 Officiating course for which we had 16 participants which included representation from almost all States and Territories. This is very encouraging and is a clear indicator that our official numbers continue to grow and further more increase number of National Level 3 accredited officials. respective participant’s accreditation not being processed. If you are not sure of the process or the correct correspondence to be completed, please contact Lauren in the BMX Australia office who will assist. There were 76 Volunteer Officials who assisted with running the 2014 BMX National Championships in Shepparton and without these people the event would not have been the success that it was. On behalf of the Board of BMX Australia I would like to thank each and every one of the members of our volunteer army. A great job WELL DONE and a huge THANK YOU. This year BMX Australia will have the Level 2 & 3 Official Courses / syllabus reviewed and updated which will be submitted to the ASC for reaccreditation, understanding our accreditation is valid for 4 years. “ On behalf of the Board of BMX Australia I would like to thank each and every one of the members of the volunteer army. A great job WELL DONE and a huge THANK YOU. At the time of writing this report we have now received expressions on interests for Officiating Roles at all nine rounds of the 2015 National Series and National Championships and will be sending out letters of invitation over the coming months. I would like to acknowledge and thank BMX Australia staff members, Mark Louis, Tiffany Wass, Rebecca Jones & Lauren Ross for their valuable assistance. NOD Paul Connors with Officials of the Year: Juanita Paton (QLD) and Paul Cockayne (VIC) As a reminder we need to ensure that when making arrangements / planning to conduct a Level 2 Officiating Course that the respective process is followed which includes completing the correct correspondence in full. If we do not follow the process or complete the documentation we potentially run the risk of the Paul Connors National Officiating Director 11 Executive Summary General Manager’s Report GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT MARK LOUIS It gives me great pleasure to provide you my General Managers report for the year ended 30 June 2014. BMX Australia continues to improve its organisational capability representing financial strength and an effective ongoing business plan. The trading outcome for the year shows a combined surplus of $345,614 (BMXA: $272,740, BMXE: $72,874) which is a pleasing result and ahead of budget forecasts. The net assets grew to $1.7M (2013: $1.3M) and a turnover $1.68M. It is the goal of BMX Australia to keep building the net financial position of the organisation which allows us to withstand adverse budget variances if required. Our annual turnover excludes High Performance Funding which is directly provided to Cycling Australia to manage our program. We continue to work hard with the ASC and the AIS in transitioning our High Performance Program back within the sport whilst maintaining the delivery of ‘world best’ outcomes. This transition which will conclude after the Rio Olympics and will be a significant and historical milestone which will see a ‘whole of sport’ structure that will enable the delivery of our strategic and operational plans in future years for the betterment of the sport. communication of circulars and press releases. Andrew’s departure gave us the opportunity to evaluate our role of media and communications and it was determined that the emphasis needs to be on obtaining increased exposure for the sport, our events and our athletes. We have engaged Sports Communication Australia to provide media and communications services to the organisation who have been working really well and are already lifting the profile of our sport and athletes. A huge thank you to David Lyall and Ed Simpson for their professionalism and sharing our vision. The closure of this financial year also sees significant change in that we did not renew the Memorandum of Understanding with Cycling Australia who was providing administrative services to our membership in the areas of coaching, and finance. We are still coming to terms with the state our coach education finds itself and will be working hard to bring it back to a maintainable level for our members. We continue to work to the ratified Strategic Plan 2013 – 2016 titled ‘Partnerships, Participation and Performance’ which outlines the direction of the organisation up to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. “ We continue to work hard with the ASC and the AIS in transitioning our High Performance Program back within the sport whilst maintaining the delivery of ‘world best’ outcomes. From a personnel perspective, Andrew Farrell left us to work closer to home and spend valuable time with his family. Andrew was with the organisation for almost 3 years and made a significant contribution to the media and communications of BMX Australia and set up quality foundations to communicate internally and externally with our stakeholders. We have worked hard in setting up these foundations which include BMXA TV, updated e-magazine (The Dirt), new website platform, Twitter, Instagram, and consistent internal James Tobin from Sunrise taking to the track with the Mini Wheelers at the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships. 12 Executive Summary General Manager’s Report PARTNERSHIPS I thank the Australian Sports Commission for their continued support of BMX racing and Freestyle at both the participation and High Performance levels. The support received from the Australian Sports Commission is significant and supports our capacity to grow and develop as an organisation. I would also like to thank Subaru for their continued support of our National Championships. It is through this partnership that we are able to provide live streaming of the event and a television broadcast through Foxsports. PARTICIPATION BMX Australia continues to see consistent membership growth with membership now sitting just under 17,000. This continued growth is an indicator that the sport of BMX is something that both children and families can relate to. The data suggests that boys and girls aged 2 – 20 years have found BMX an appealing and engaging sport. The 4 month membership has continued to provide a fantastic opportunity for those new to our sport with 3,300 memberships for the year. Our first full calendar with the BMX Mini Wheeler membership category has seen many states and clubs engage heavily and we are already seeing some great progression from the Mini Wheeler category up to Sprockets. ‘Riders ready, watch the gate’ - riders lined up at the start gate at the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships Freestyle BMX membership has now been prioritised in the BMX Australia Strategic plan. Consultation with the industry resulted in the design and implementation of the Freestyle BMXA Tour which is a national tour that allows riders of all skill levels to compete in freestyle disciplines. The tour provides event promoters and rider’s consistency and professionalism in all freestyle events throughout Australia. The National Sign on Day continues to be BMX Australia’s membership campaign to reach people Australia wide who haven’t seen or experienced BMX before and to hopefully get them involved in the sport in the future. The National Sign on Day campaign continues to be a major strategy in promoting the sport and BMX Australia membership. “ The 4 month membership has continued to provide a fantastic opportunity for those new to our sport with 3,300 memberships for the year 3,000 entries participated across 6 days of the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships in Shepparton with riders coming from every state and territory. Ranging in ages from 2 to 65, riders competed in age categories determined by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) along with additional classes determined by BMX Australia to determine 54 National Champions during 13 Executive Summary General Manager’s Report the event. This would not have been possible without nearly 100 volunteers together with the Greater Shepparton City Council and the Shepparton BMX Club that helped to put on the event. The event continues to grow and develop and is truly of significance as it provides an economic impact of over $10 Million. The event was live streamed across the world, produced through multiple HD cameras and GoPros from Thursday – Saturday of the event with it being hosted through the BMXA website, BMXA APP and the epicentre.tv website for free together with being viewed over a big screen at the track. Key figures for the live streaming are as follows: - over 70 000 total live views - 3100 views post event - 90 240 page views on epicentre.tv Live streaming was also viewed by 23 countries in addition to Australia with key international viewers being N.Z. and U.S.A. A post produced highlights program was aired on Foxsports a number of times and was also aired online free through Epicentre TV. “ The event [National Championships] continues to grow and develop and is truly of significance as it provides an economic impact of over $10 Million. The BMX Australia National series continues to develop. There were less rounds in 2014 however the number of riders who registered for the event increased. The event calendar grows across the country and is becoming extremely congested with the current train of thought to conduct all events prior to the World Championships. The Board has set up an Events Working Group to review our current event calendar and make recommendations on a new vibrant calendar for a non-Olympic Year and an Olympic year. PERFORMANCE I would like to thank the continued great work being undertaken by our BMX High Performance Head Coach Wade Bootes and Assistant Coach Paul Sales. We finish the 2014 international season as the number 1 ranked nation in both men’s and women’s UCI Elite categories. Congratulations to Sam Willoughby on winning the Elite Men World Championship in both race and time trial. Additionally, congratulations to Caroline Buchanan being crowned the SX World Cup Series winner and to Anthony Dean on his runner up for men. There have, of course, been many other great achievements and results this year, however the story is better told in the pictures and words contained within this report. Communication with BMX Australia’s stakeholders has increased year on year and we continue to refine existing communications along with employing new methods. 2014 saw the introduction of the BMX Australia APP which is your one stop shop for all things BMX. Please download the APP for everything from membership , race results, social media, live TV and archived content through BMXA TV. Social media continues to dominate when communicating with the BMX community and this has been reflected in the statistics generated across Facebook and Twitter. Instagram has continued to be used and is now another platform to engage and promote the BMX community with great success. Other key highlights over the past year included: • The Board appointment of Anita Wells and Paul Connors as directors • To ensure effective, relevant and transparent governance, the Board adopted / amended several policies and ByLaws pertaining to Member Protection, Disciplinary Regulations, Lighting Policy, Integrity and Gaming Policy, Track Guidelines and Anti Doping. • Formation of the National technical Committee • The development of the organisational values – EXCELLENCE, PASSION, INTEGRITY, CARE (EPIC) • The appointment of Luke Madill and Sharon Willoughby as Development Academy coaches • National data base and website platform • Equal prize money provided for Men and Women at National Championships • BMXA commenced discussions with the ASC and AIS on the transition of our High Performance Program back under the sport of BMX 14 Executive Summary General Manager’s Report ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are a number of acknowledgements for the record. I am privileged to work with an extremely dedicated and committed Board of Directors. Throughout the reporting period, the Board provided leadership, governance and strategic direction for the organisation. Barry Knight (President / Chair) continues to lead by example and works tirelessly; always available to members and staff in providing council and insisting that we ‘do things better’. I would like to acknowledge outgoing directors Abe Schneider and Sally Howie whom I have been working closely with over the years. It’s been great working with you and thank you for your support and guidance. There is a saying that ‘you are only as good as the people around you’ and this is certainly true with the BMX Australia staff. As a team, and individually they have demonstrated commitment, enthusiasm, expertise, professionalism and a willingness to get the job done. I personally congratulate the staff in what can only be described as a difficult and challenging year and reaffirm my belief that the staff are the organisations most valuable asset. The tireless and often thankless work of our amazing team of volunteers needs special mention including officials at events and club officials. Your contribution is imperative to the success of all our activities. “ Our State Members should be proud of the sports achievements in the reporting period and I congratulate each and every one of you for your belief and support in positioning BMX Australia where we are today. We also finished with the Elite Men’s World Champion (Sam Willoughby), the overall SX World cup Series Champion in women (Caroline Buchanan) and the runner’s up for men (Anthony Dean). “ The HP Program looks forward to the inclusion of the new BMX Australia Development Academy which will assist riders to develop towards the BMXA HP Program in the future. The HP program riders are continuing to demonstrate they are performing against the World’s best riders at international competitions. We have 4 riders (Sam Willoughby, Anthony Dean, Caroline Buchanan and Melinda McLeod) medalling at UCI SX World Cup / World Championship level and Lauren Reynolds with the potential to medal by qualifying in a SX World Cup final. Bodi Turner and Rachel Jones have both made the semi-finals at recent SX World Cups. The third quarter also saw big periods of travel between the World Championships in Europe, SX rounds in Argentina and USA. During this time the HP Program managed to gain access to the 2015 UCI BMX World Championship track in Belgium, the SX tracks in Buenos Aires and USA for camps prior to the events. A site visit was also scheduled to the Rock Hill SX facility which will host the 2015 UCI SX World Cup and 2017 World Championships in South Carolina, USA. During the first quarter of this year, the HP Program continued to provide development opportunities for the BMXA squad members via domestic SX camps to identify potential athletes through the National Performance Standards (NPS). This has proven to be a successful formula which we can align with the new scholarship evaluation periods. The extended periods away allowed for greater engagement with the HP Program athletes as it is infrequent that we are all together. Discussions and plans for the 2015 season are progressing well as we work on finding the best solutions for a challenging year ahead. We will continue to explore optimal ways to increase individual rider’s personal best performances through our High Performance environment on the Gold Coast, through our increased service support network. During these camps we cater for key elements for the athletes to excel on the domestic and international stage. Over the period of these camps, the HPU squad riders identified five values that they will strive to align their behaviours around: pride, respect, professionalism, excellence and communication; to form a strong BMX team environment. The second quarter was a massive period of traveling and racing due to the international SX schedule. The HP Program invited some of the top domestic riders from the BMXA Probikx series to experience a European Tour as a part of their development process. The athletes performed well within the European series by qualifying through to finals and collecting a few podiums. As we have continued to expand our relationships with international coaches and programs, we have gained valuable track time on UCI SX World Cup tracks during this period. Collaborating with international programs has been beneficial in allowing HP athlete’s from different Nations to train together and creating a performance environment that all elite coaches strive for. 2015 BMXA HP PROGRAM INTERNATIONAL RACE SCHEDULE The HP Program looks forward to the inclusion of the new BMX Australia Development Academy which will assist riders to develop towards the BMXA HP Program in the future. 2015 will again challenge the BMXA HP Program with varying travel and race schedules of our athletes. Strategies are being put in place to make the most of all opportunities for each athlete worldwide, with HP objectives in mind that has been agreed to by the BMX Joint Management Committee (JMC). Wade Bootes HPU National BMX Coach 2014 HPU UCI World Championship Team 23 High Performance Dev Academy Report DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY REPORT SHARON WILLOUGHBY The BMX Academy in 2014 started with 2x 14G, 1x14B, 2x15G, 2x15G, 2x16G and 2x16B who attended a camp at Nerang and was increased with an additional 1x14G and 1x16B in round 3 of the national series at Westside WA. A Pre World’s Camp was held at Penrith using the LMX track. The BMX Academy riders stayed in cabins at Nepean Shores with the female Jnr Elite riders who were competing in the World Championships in Rotterdam. The Jnr Elite men stayed in the cabin at the LMX track. Luke and I worked together to prepare the riders for the World Championships and international travel and routines. This was the first time many of these riders had travelled on their own to Europe to compete. The riders bonded as a team and worked together to support each other both on the camp and in Rotterdam. Millie Reed – 14 G (VIC) Millie is 7A and finished 3rd in the National Series. Millie attended all of the camps except PreWorld’s Camp. Millie has grown throughout the year and appreciated the experience of being part of the BMX Academy. She communicated well and followed instructions provided to her. Mikayla Rose – 14G (ACT) Mikayla is 3A and finished 1st in the National Series and was a semi-finalist at the Worlds. Mikayla joined the Academy in round 3 at WA. She was excited to be invited into the Academy and worked hard to achieve her best at all times. Mikayla is part of Caroline’s Next Gen Team and attended the Pre World’s Team prior to flying out to Rotterdam with her father. Unfortunately Mikayla has recently broken her ankle and is not able to compete in the Trans Tasman Test Team. Shelby Green – 14 G (QLD) Shelby is 3W and 2A, she was unable to qualify in the National Series due to a broken elbow in December. Shelby attended all camps despite her injury in January and worked hard to prepare herself for the National and World Championships. The wires in her elbow were removed the week after she arrived home from the Worlds. Nathaniel Rodway – 14B (NSW) Nathaniel is 2A and a quarter finalist at the Worlds in Rotterdam. Nathaniel did not qualify for the National Series due to a broken thumb which caused him to miss rounds 3 and 4 in WA. Nathaniel benefited from being in the Academy and competing in the World Championships this year. He is young and will be able to hold his own as he develops more strength. Sara Jones – 15G (QLD) Sara is currently 1A and 2nd in the National Series, she was unable to compete in the world championships due to a knee injury and collapsed lung at Sleeman just prior to the Pre World’s Camp. Sara is strong a very competitive rider. Dion Bromley - 15G (QLD) Dion is 3W, 3A and 3rd in the Nationals Series. Dion displayed enormous growth throughout the season. She communicated well about her training and worked hard on developing her strength and skills. Dion has a strong group of girls to race in the National Series and focussed on closing the gap every time she competed against them. Dylan Scruton – 15B (QLD) Dylan is 2A and 2nd in the National Series. Dylan injured his shoulder in a race requiring it to be pinned just prior to the World Championships, however, he still attended the Pre World’s Camp to learn as much as he could and to support his team mates prior to their departure to Rotterdam. Dylan is a skilled rider who has improved his organisation and independence skills through being part of the BMX Academy. Jake Bowe – 15B (QLD) Jake is currently 8A, 3rd in the National Series and won his motos at the World Championships. Jake is relatively new to the sport of BMX and attended all of the camps except the Pre World’s Camp due to him departing earlier and travelling with his father to the Worlds. Jake is a keen and enthusiastic rider who asks questions and applies every piece of information provided to him. Jake works hard to develop his skills and has experienced difficulty in this area due to a lack of facilities and the impact of poor weather in Cairns. I believe he is a rider who would have benefited more by attending the Pre World’s Camp and travelling with the team to Rotterdam. Jake is organised, mature and determined to improve. 24 High Performance Dev Academy Report Jessica Lathwell - 16G (WA) Jess is currently 3A and 3rd in the National Series; she was 5th in the semi at the Worlds in Rotterdam. She has developed her skills in jumping over the past 3 years in the BMX Academy and her parents are changing the track on their property to an 8m hill for Jess to gain experience and skill in readiness to Jnr Elite and Elite. Jess is keen, hardworking and enthusiastic. She communicates well and always tries her best. Jess attended all of the camps and travelled to the Worlds on her own to gain experience of independence ready for Jnr Elite and Elite. Aislynn Weber – 16G (QLD) Aislynn is currently 4A and 1st in the National Series. Aislynn was a semi-finalist at the World Championships in Rotterdam. Aislynn attended all of the camps except the Pre World’s camp due to her travelling with her parents and departing earlier. Aislynn is a strong rider. Brandon Te Hiko - 3rd National Series. 3rd World Time Trial. I oversaw three development initiatives: the Shadow Squad girls camp, a Pre-Worlds camp and providing coaching support at the World Championships. We were able to achieve all outcomes that were set for theses initiatives and I would like to thank everyone involved who helped make them successful. Shane Rosa - 5th National series, Motos at Worlds Post World Championships, I have been a part of helping to develop new pathways within BMX. In particular, helping in the areas of forming a new tiered rider system and setting up a testing criteria for the academy. Jade Parker - Motos (injured 2 weeks before the event). As we continue working through the transition process with HP, I am hoping this will see a lot more riders come back into the academy which will provide them with more support at a range of levels. “ Post World Championships, I have been a part of helping to develop new pathways within BMX. I have allocated training camp dates for 2015 to try and coincide with the National Series rounds, hoping to save riders travel time and finances. At these Training Camps we can finally get some testing data on the riders to create them a more specific training program. Final results and support for our elite riders in 2014 are as follows: From the BMXA Shadow Squad Camp - we saw three girls head to the World Championships and step up to the challenge. Ashleigh Gunn - Motos. Rachelle Smith - 5th Final. With the limited support leading into the event all 3 girls had a strong showing. Rachelle Smith making it all the way to the final with an impressive 5th place finish. The other two riders from the Academy I work with on a weekly basis are: Mikayla Rose - 14 Girls 1st National Series. Semi Final at Worlds (currently injured). Andrew Hughes - 16 Boys 1st National Series, 2nd at Worlds. I am continuing to work with and set the riders programs until the new academy list comes out. This will also introduce visual coaching into the program. I am looking forward to the 2015 season. Although Caroline was sadly unable to defend her title at the World Championships, she was able to claim the World Supercross crown and in doing so contributed to the National points total, a major highlight for 2014. We are always looking at ways of gaining new memberships; with techniques such as Try BMX for Free events proving to be successful, however we are still suffering the age-old problem of trying to then keep them in the sport. Ultimately it is our aim for ACT BMX to become more prosperous, and to work actively with Government in an effort to secure new or upgraded facilities. This loss of people is a challenge we are working with the clubs to overcome, particularly with a major component of our club committees being made up of individuals with a short number of years in the sport. Although the ACT BMX State team is a small team, it has still been a relatively successful year in 2014, with podium finishes at the National Championships by three of our girls, two National Series winners, while another of our girls was crowned champion in four states. Locally Caroline Buchanan, Mikayla Rose and Evan and Felicia Thomas have all been recognised through the ACT Sport ‘Sportstar’ Monthly awards for their achievements this year. This is not a small undertaking considering there are 58 sports represented in the ACT, particularly during a Commonwealth games year when our athletes managed nine monthly awards between them for 2013/14 reporting year. We also aim to once again hold a successful ACTBMX Championships to showcase the depth of talent and involvement the ACT can produce even in the face of financial and infrastructural adversity. Finally we will aim to maintain our relationship with Capital Cycling, a partnership we are particularly proud of. “ Ultimately it is our aim for ACT BMX to become more prosperous, and to work actively with Government in an effort to secure new or upgraded facilities. We would like to acknowledge and thank the work of state coach Miekel Rose, who is stepping aside from the role he has held for four years. Miekel has been instrumental in the establishment of the ACTBMX State Team and the training of the team since 2011. We are confident that Miekel will leave behind a last legacy, forged during countless hours spent creating inventive training programs for ACT State Team that has seen some impressive athlete results achieved. Though Miekel will be sadly missed, we wish him all the best outside of the limelight, and the extra time he will have to concentrate on his two children. Steve Thomas ACT BMX President ACT riders Caroline Buchanan and Mikayla Rose at Round 3 of the 2014 National Series at Westside, WA 29 State Reports New South Wales NSW STATE REPORT NEIL CAMERON From a membership perspective, we are excited about a number of several new clubs that are currently in the pipeline, namely Menai, and Port Macquarie whilst Moree opened several weeks ago. These new clubs provide a fantastic indication of the growing strength of our sport throughout NSW, and we will ultimately provide them with continued support to ensure they succeed. There has been a heavy investment by clubs in their facilities during 2014, with plans for further development in an effort to increase the standard across the state, and attract new members to our sport. Specifically Penrith are planning a new five-meter start hill, Bathurst is planning construction of a Supercross style facility at Mt Panorama, while many other tracks have begun tarring their corners. Overall this is a pleasing improvement in facilities state-wide, however it is important to note that further work is required if we are to continually challenge riders with increasingly difficult tracks. “ Our state titles continue to grow each year, and it is encouraging to see that our state series also continue to attract new competitors, specifically we are now averaging 550 riders per event, whilst opens average 450 riders per event. Our state titles continue to grow each year, and it is encouraging to see that our state series also continue to attract new competitors, specifically we are now averaging 550 riders per event, whilst opens average 450 riders per event. Part of this success must be attributed to the consistency the events now provide in terms of entries, pricing, classes, race format, practice times, the running of event and awards standardization. This consistency has been being well received by both riders and clubs. We now have an encouraging number of Level 2 Officials, who now officiate each round of our State Series, whilst Level 1 Officials provide them with support. This hands on learning role environment ensures that there is a consistent flow of competent officials coming through our systems, and provides consistency across NSW. The level of coaching across the state also Dual National Champion NSW rider Nicole Docherty competing in Pre-Titles at the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships continues to improve, with coaching provided at each round of the Crackerjack and Dynamites series (in conjunction with State Series) for current or future squad members. We also have a coaching team in place for the Australian championships, and are currently in the process of revamping our State Squad procedure, and will now be supporting all rounds of the National Series. One of our major developments this year has been the Mighty 11s/Test Team, with the Junior test team now undertaking two camps prior to the June leg and one camp prior to the October trip. Management of this program has been ramped up to a professional standard and the parents and riders are experiencing a greatly improved experience based on the excellent work of Peter Jaehne and Lorraine Dunkley. Our key objectives moving forward to continue the development of our coaching and officials in an effort to increase the standard of BMX across the state, and lay a strong foundation for future success. There will also be a significant focus on the development of teams to handle a variety of roles across all our events, this is in response to the need to eliminate single points of failure that have impacted upon the success of our events this year. Neil Cameron BMX NSW President 30 State Reports Northern Territory NT STATE REPORT JASON EECEN The National Come & Try Days were central to our membership strategies and were very effective, with both Satellite City & Jingili reported attendance rates of over 100 people each, while Red Centre also had a good turnout. There was excellent media coverage, which has contributed to a steady rate of new participants throughout the season. Special mention must go to Satellite City BMX Club who conducted a second come & try day later in the year that was equally successful. Participation has also been extremely encouraging in Darwin, with race meetings regularly attended by 160 to 200 participants. In some less fortunate news, the decision to close the refinery in Nhulunbuy has caused some major changes to the community, with many families having left to find other employment. There is still a core group of committed members involved with maintaining the operation of the club. Unfortunately whilst this club had been scheduled to host the 2015 NTBMX titles, it has since informed us that they will not be in a position to host the event. In relation to new clubs seeking affiliation, Big Rivers BMX club in Katherine is making some headway, and are nearly complete in their affiliation documentation, while Groote Eylandt BMX club who were seeking affiliation, have had some changes in key people and are in the process of reorganising. The major infrastructure undertaking this year has been the building of a new roof over the Jingilli track, and much of our time and energy has been directed towards completing the project this year. This project has been a massive under taking, and it’s gratifying to reach the point where regular race meetings and practice sessions are now being held under the magnificent facility. The Ahrens Arena roof project at the Jingili BMX Club was officially opened in July, and was ultimately made possible with support from the Federal and Northern Territory Governments. The club has gone through some major changes, and the committee has done a fantastic job of fund raising and completing the huge workload to get the facility race ready. They are now consolidating their current position and planning what is required to host major events going forward. The Red Centre BMX Club did an exemplary job hosting the NT Titles and followed up the event by hosting the BMX events as part of the Alice Springs Masters games. “ We are also working on a feasibility study and budget for hosting a round of the BMX Australia National series in 2016, in an effort to attract large numbers of domestic riders and their families, complimented by some international competitors as well. NTBMX has recently completed their strategic management plan for the next three years, whereby our primary focus will be on implementing the operational plan to reach the proposed outcomes. We are also working on a feasibility study and budget for hosting a round of the BMX Australia National series in 2016, in an effort to attract large numbers of domestic riders and their families, complimented by some international competitors as well. Such an event would provide a huge economic boost to the Northern Territory, whilst generating national exposure and opportunity for NTBMX. Acknowledgement must go to the work that Peter Marsh has done since becoming Officiating Director, he has been excellent in the role and he has made some great improvements to the quality of BMX events at each club. We would also like to thank the board and staff at BMXA for the amazing amount of work they have put in over the past twelve months, ultimately helping to generate some great leaps forward. Jason Eecen NT BMX Secretary 31 State Report Queensland QLD STATE REPORT LANCE WATKIN BMX Queensland once again happily supported BMX Australia and the National sign on day in February 2014. This year BMX Queensland also joined in partnership with BMX International to offer a “BMX Starter Pack” and a “Redline Bike package” aimed at our new members joining through the National sign on day, and also to our current and existing members. This package has assisted BMX Queensland in encouraging the growth of our sport, and has been continued throughout 2014 to assist new and existing members throughout Queensland. The popularity of BMX in Queensland has continued to strengthen on the back of Queensland riders achieving great results at National and World Championships. Such results are a great reward for those riders, parents, coaches and volunteers that in some way give up their time endlessly to make this sport happen, and can only serve to inspire the next generation of BMX riders in this state. The Board of BMX Queensland has implemented some new volunteer roles to help assist the current volunteers striving to improve and support the zones and clubs at a grassroots level. “ BMXQ would like to focus on generating a strong brand, end product and maximising social media opportunities as this presents a good platform for future sponsors. In another positive initiative, the Coaching Director and the State Coach applied for funding through Sport & Rec to help assist in setting up an eight week training program designed to help and assist our grassroots level riders and coaches throughout Queensland. This funding was successfully obtained, and the initiative is currently ongoing. BMX Queensland continues to support, guide and produce assistance and materials for our riders, members and volunteers on a variety of areas including athlete development, coaching camps/clinics, coaching/officiating courses and workshops throughout the year. In this period we have provided six coaching clinics for our members to participate and gain experience. BMX Queensland has had another official here in Queensland recently pass his UCI Commissaire accreditation and we wish Paul Connors every happiness and joy for the journey ahead. In total we currently now have four approved UCI Commissaires living in Queensland. There has been a fantastic increase in officials and volunteer memberships since November 2013 the standings were 609 and now 898 as of August 2014, comprised of 762 level 1’s, 108 level 2’s and 28 level 3’s. Central to this success has been BMXQ’s determination to support its members with knowledge via regularly ran courses that ultimately provide our officials and volunteers with a pathway to follow if they would like to progress further within this area of our sport. Our key objectives moving forward are to continue to support and assist the membership growth of the sport of BMX by assisting all members in any way possible, whether it be coaching clinics, improving athlete access to other support networks or by assisting members through general information. We also plan to build on corporate structure and governance for our region, zones and clubs, which are also supported and guided by the CPR Group. The CPR group have had face to face visits with some club and zone committees all over the state this year. Michael and Steve have assisted with cloud-based information portals which is designed to help keep some consistency in each club and to help in the management of documentation. Subsequently BMXQ will endeavour to continue its partnership with the CPR Group. Another overall objective is to maintain a steady increase in the number of officials that we have accredited. In addition we need to ensure that we capture and foster any potential officials that would like to reach National and International accreditation. Finally BMXQ would like to focus on generating a strong brand, end product and maximising social media opportunities as this presents a good platform for future sponsors. BMX Queensland would like to sincerely thank the Queensland Department of Sport & Recreation for their continued support, the CPR Group for their continued guidance and assistance over the last five years, and LKI & DK for their support of the sport of BMX. Lastly to our members a special thank you for their continued support and assistance throughout the year. Lance Watkin BMXQ President 32 State Report South Australia SA STATE REPORT BRENT BARRETT From a membership perspective, there has been an encouraging increase in the number of members per club over the past twelve months, which gives a great indication as to the strength of BMX in the state. The number of Mini Wheelers continues to increase, with some clubs in particular showing strong growth numbers in this age group. The division is now offered at every club, state and regional event, and has been a contributing factor in the growth levels registered. We have also had a large contingent of 5, 6 and 7 year old riders choosing to travel to all the state events across South Australia, and has greatly improved these competitions. Such encouraging interest across the young age groups helps to set a strong foundation for the quality of South Australian racing in the future. The introduction of a monthly president meeting has been a successful initiative, and helps to communicate directly to the clubs about the running and progress of BMX in South Australia. This has included an open door policy that has resulted in each of the clubs being more accountable, and ensures that each club is following policies and procedures at their club race meetings. This has helped to improve the standard of event management at club level, as well as at state and regional events. There has also been a major change in coaching following a significant restructuring by BMXSA. A State Coach has now been appointed, whilst the training process across all squads has also been changed. Each squad is now coached fortnightly on alternating weeks, which allows all riders of all abilities access to quality coaching, ultimately helping them progress down the elite pathway that was established three years ago in South Australia. We have found that this process has also helped broaden the depth of coaching in the state, as well as helping to build the confidence of our beginner coaches, through our level one and experienced coaches. Our key objective moving forward is to continue the progress of the elite pathway program, as it provides tremendous benefit to all our riders, as well as developing the depth and knowledge of all our officials throughout the BMX community. “ The Mini Wheeler division is now offered at every club, state and regional event, and has been a contributing factor in the growth levels registered. This will be achieved via regular meetings in an effort to keep all our volunteers involved in the running of the BMX Community in South Australia over the long term. We will also continue to utilise the knowledge of our state Level 3 officials in helping to train/mentor our Level 1 & 2 officials during every club, state and regional race events. I would like to thank all the life members, parents/guardians and competitors for making the sport of BMX in South Australia a friendly, competitive, fun environment to be involved in. I would also like to thank the club presidents for being involved, and continuing to have an open mind in regards to progressing the sport in South Australia. Thanks finally to the directors who have provided their time and expertise to go the extra mile and complete tasks promptly and successfully. Brent Barrett BMXSA President South Australian rider Anthony Dean heads down the final straight in the Round 1 National Series Time Trials at Nerang, QLD 33 State Reports Tasmania TAS STATE REPORT MATTHEW ELLIS BMX Tasmania’s strategy in 2014/2015 is to continue to increase the number of riders we have in the sport, and to generate increased public awareness of BMX in Tasmania by holding more come and try clinics across the state. It is our view that more public awareness will be critical in the success of BMX moving forward, because unfortunately BMX has become the forgotten sport here in Tasmania. Coaching has been a main focus of ours this year, as we attempt to raise the standard across the state, and will continue to be a major focus in 2015. It’s important to note that whilst we endeavour to help facilitate great coaching, only having one accredited coach within the state has proven very difficult, and is a problem we will aim to rectify for next year. “ Our biggest highlight of the year however, has been the 300% increase in riders competing at this year’s Nationals, where our riders were able to bring home five plates. Increased numbers in our state titles this year has occurred as a result of changing our dates to coincide with the state titles of BMX Victoria, and is an initiative we will look to replicate in years to come. Our biggest highlight of the year however, has been the 300% increase in riders competing at this year’s Nationals, where our riders were able to bring home five plates. Such an increase in participation at a national level is an encouraging sign for BMX in Tasmania, and provides motivation to increase those numbers next year, and to hopefully generate more success. We have a number of key objectives we aim to achieve for 2015, as mentioned coaching will remain central to our plans moving forward as we aim to obtain a minimum of three coaches per club. This will provide our riders with the best chance of success and to ensure that quality, consistent coaching is been delivered across all clubs. Our other key objective for 2015 is to increase the public awareness of BMX across Tasmania particularly amongst the youth, and is an initiative that will be critical to the success of and longevity of our clubs and the sport of BMX in this state. We aim to generate this exposure by promoting the sport of BMX to schools, childcare centres and sporting stores etc. A big thank you must go to all the board members for taking on a huge challenge in trying to turn the state around. Thank you also to all the parents, riders and especially the officials that continue to keep the sport of BMX growing and moving forward. Matt Ellis BMXTAS President Tasmanian Mini Wheeler Mace Evans heading down the home straight at the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships 34 State Reports Victoria VIC STATE REPORT STEVE HUNTER With the help of funding received from VicHealth, BMX Victoria is developing programs to encourage the growth of female participation in the sport. Currently the membership split is 79% male and 21% female, so we have highlighted this as a significant growth area. In order to encourage this growth we have outlined the following processes, which include providing clubs with training and information on how to create promotional materials that are accessible for attracting women and girls to BMX. In conjunction all new or re- accredited coaches will be required to undertake harassment and discrimination training, as well as helping to develop information for club and coaches on increasing female participation in BMX. of our novice and expert classes in the State Series, combined with the ongoing popularity of BMX Australia’s 4 month license, has played a significant role in encouraging newcomers to the sport, and their participation in large open race meetings. “ From an event standpoint, the BMXV Junior State Series held in the first half of the year continues to grow, with the average number of riders at individual rounds increasing significantly from around 250 per round to 400 per round. As a result, for the first time in living memory BMX Victoria has been able, with the aid of State government funding, to employ a fulltime Administrator, Shannon Ryan, to support the Board and the administration of the sport. Although BMX Victoria’s membership has increased every year over the last decade, to the point where there are now over 1200 members. However the sport continues to be run in the same unprofessional manner that it was in 2005 when there were only around 500 members. Victorian rider Josh Callan going through the pro straight at the 2014 Subaru BMX National Championships Other membership initiatives have included our involvement with the Victorian School’s Cycling Championship, which has helped take BMX into schools around the state. The initiative involved rounds taking place across Victoria, with the finals recently held in Bendigo, and has ultimately helped introduce BMX to school kids completely new to the sport. From an event standpoint, the BMXV Junior State Series held in the first half of the year continues to grow, with the average number of riders at individual rounds increasing significantly from around 250 per round to 400 per round. The introduction, and subsequent separation In order to rectify this, the BMXV Board structure has been changed since the last AGM to introduce directors from outside of the sport who have particular skills that we need to improve our governance procedures. To this end we have co-opted Jo Jericho, a senior marketer with one of Australia’s major brewers, and Paul Czarnota, a solicitor with wide-ranging experience in legal matters in Australia and the USA. Another key objective moving forward is to improve the standard of tracks across the state. Far too few Victorian tracks are challenging enough to reach the standard required to attract National events. BMXV is actively promoting the benefits to Local Government Authorities of supporting major track upgrades to make them eligible for major State events and the ability to tender for National events. Steve Hunter BMXV President 35 State Report Western Australia WA STATE REPORT MATTHEW BUTTERWORTH 2014 represented another successful year for BMX in Western Australia, from grass roots participation and membership to coaching and officiating, to entries at our state series and state championships, we have seen success across the board. BMX Sports WA, in partnership with the Department of Sport & Recreation, has continued to implement the Healthy Club Online checklist for all clubs, allowing them to complete as a group and then receive a detailed report outlining each club’s strengths and weaknesses. “ WA Clubs are now in a transition phase after over 98% used the online system to become new or renewing members. BMXWA have been assisting a number of clubs in their grant applications for major works and track redevelopments to commence in 2015. For 2014 BMXWA have continued the initiative of volunteer recognition for our volunteers at both club and state level. We understand that without the help of volunteers we would not be able to operate. Each month we ask clubs to submit a name to be in the draw for WA Volunteer of the month, the winner receives a $100 voucher and certificate to be presented by the club. In conjunction with the monthly draw, all clubs are required to put in one name of a volunteer that has contributed throughout the year to go into a final draw, and can be one of the monthly volunteers or someone different. The winner received a full BMXA membership for the year up to the value of $150. The 201/2013 Volunteer of the Year was Chris Taylor of the Hills BMX Club. Volunteer duties continued at the Super Series, with every rider wishing to qualify for 2013/2014 Super Series having to provide a volunteer for a minimum of 1 x motos over the course of the season, with a register of volunteers kept by BMXWA. At the end of 2013/2014 Super Series Season year all the volunteer names were placed into the draw to win a full year of Super Series fees paid to the value of $165. The award was drawn at Annual Awards night, with the 2012/13 award going to Justine Short of the Southside BMX Club. Our events calendar moved to a more structured ten race state series in 2014 beginning in January and ending with Westside BMX Club hosting the National Series in March. Our Super Series continued to see strong entries across all age groups, in particular the Mini Wheelers with 15-20 at each event as well as 60-80 Sprockets consistently throughout the year. On a social level, our end of year awards function will enter its 5th year hosted by the Great Escape Water Park in Hillarys. This event is always a sell-out out, with 500 tickets being sold each year for riders and their families and friend to celebrate the year and award the age group trophies for the Super Series. With the introduction of the beginners coaching course, to date we have 18 newly accredited beginner coaches compared to 15 in 2013 and 16 in 2012. We aim to have another group through before the end of the year, with our aim ultimately to have a minimum number of coaches in every club to be able to service the number of new and existing riders coming through. With the IMG online membership licensing system being superseded by the OSM system, WA Clubs are now in a transition phase after over 98% used the online system to become new or renewing members. With regard to the electronic media, BMXWA has continued to maintain Facebook as a key platform in our online and social media, where up to the minute information on races, links to results, videos and all things BMX locally and internationally are posted daily. To date we have 4150 ‘likes’ on the page, which is a 43% increase since 2013. With the ongoing expansion of our athlete development program, we have seen 15 members selected for the State Squads for 2013/14. Invitations from the National HPP Coaches meant some of our athletes were able to learn and experience what it’s like to train and practice at the elite level. The BMXWA Board have also agreed to continue the support for the upcoming season of 2014/15, with Nathan Schmiedte appointed as State HP Coach. BMX Mini Wheelers continues to achieve great success at the club level, and refinement of the format has seen this grow to a legitimate class in 16 clubs throughout the state. To date WA has 78 registered Mini Wheelers participating in all rounds of the Super Series and will also be featured at the State Championships in Southside. Of note is the specially designed Mini Wheeler start gate, which holds four riders and comes complete with a foot controlled starting mechanism. ABN 91 905 251 034 NOTES TO FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2014 NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial report preparation requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 1991 (ACT). The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity. BMX Australia Inc. is a not-for-profit entity for the purpose of preparing the financial statements on the basis that the Constitution of the Association prevents it from making distributions to members. The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historic costs, which do not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of noncurrent assets. The financial report was approved by the committee as at the date of the committees' report. The following specific accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this report: (a) Revenue Revenue from the rendering of services is recognised upon the delivery of the service to the customers. Interest revenue is recognised when it becomes receivable on a proportional basis taking in to account the interest rates applicable to the financial assets. Insurance revenue is recognised upon the invoice being issued. Membership fees and licenses, and other revenue are recognised when payment is received. All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST). (b) Contributions - Government Grants and Donations A non-reciprocal contribution or grant is recognised when the association obtains control of the contribution or grant and it is probable that the economic benefits will flow to the entity, and the amount of the contribution or grant can be measured reliably. If conditions attached to the contribution or grant that must be satisfied before the association is eligible to receive the contribution, recognition of contribution or income is deferred until those conditions are met. When the entity receives grants but is obliged to give directly approximately equal value to the contributor, recognition of grant income will be deferred until the delivery of service. A non-reciprocal donation is recognised when the right to receive a donation has been established. Plant and equipment Plant and equipment is measured on the cost basis. Depreciation The depreciable amount of all fixed assets is depreciated over their estimated useful lives commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. (e) Impairment of non-financial assets Assets with an indefinite useful life are not amortised but are tested annually for impairment in accordance with AASB 136. Assets subject to annual depreciation or amortisation are reviewed for impairment whenever events or circumstances arise that indicates that the carrying amount of the asset may be impaired. An impairment loss is recognised where the carrying amount of the asset exceeds its recoverable amount. The recoverable amount of an asset is defined as the higher of its fair value less costs to sell and value in use. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flows which will be received from the assets employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash flows have been discounted to present values in determining recoverable amounts. (f) Provisions Provisions are recognised when the association has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result of past events, for which it is probable that an out flow of economic benefits will result and that outflow can be reliably measured. (g) Leases Leases are classified at their inception as either operating or finance leases based on the economic substance of the agreement so as to reflect the risks and benefits incidental to ownership. -6- 57 Financial Report BMXA Financial Report FINANCIAL REPORT BMX AUSTRALIA INC BMX AUSTRALIA INC. (h) Employee benefits (i) Short-term employee benefit obligations Liabilities arising in respect of wages and salaries, annual leave and any other employee benefits expected to be settled within twelve months of the reporting date are measured at their nominal amounts based on remuneration rates which are expected to be paid when the liability is settled. The expected cost of shortterm employee benefits in the form of compensated absences such as annual leave is recognised in the provision for employee benefits. All other short-term employee benefit obligations are presented as payables. (ii) Long-term employee benefit obligations Liabilities arising in respect of long service leave and annual leave which is not expected to be settled within twelve months of the reporting date are measured at the present value of the estimated future cash outflow to be made in respect of services provided by employees up to the reporting date.
