When we will celebrate the founding of our Nation . It was forged from the blood and sacrifices made by men and women who had suffered from the cruelty of an uncaring government. There is much in the Declaration of Independence that is demanded of us as beneficiaries of this sacrifice. I often wonder if we still have the will and backbone to demand change when it is needed. This issue, we welcome some new members to our Old Guard Family. The 79th Regimental Commander ; COL. James C. Markert, Commander 1st Battalion; LTC Slade H. Beaudoin, and CSM of the 1st Battalion; CSM James Bodecker. We wish the best of everything for COL Dave Anders, LTC Brandon Robbins, and CSM William Wilder in their new assignments. I was able to attend both changes of command and meet them. They will be at our 15th Annual Reunion to meet YOU, the reader, IF you ACT SOON and make your reservations ( hint hint). We also welcome a new member of the Board of Directors this issue, SGM(R) Kerry Kolhof. He was named to replace 1SG(R) James Warner who had to resign due to employment changes. Kerry wears several hats for The Old Guard Association, and we thank him for accepting this new duty. Look through this issue for more information regarding the Reunion and the schedule. As usual, all of the events regarding participation with the Regiment are dependent on their ability to take part in them. We are also looking for help in the Hospitality Room in helping to pick up and transport the supplies. We will need help in tending the bar and especially on Thursday night during the President’s Reception. We want to announce that the actor, D. B. Sweeney will be our Special Guest at the Reunion. He played SGT Jackie Willow in the movie, “Gardens of Stone” that was filmed at Fort Myer in 1987. This is the 25th Anniversary of the film’s release. There are rumors that some of the other people in the movie might join us. The late 1SG(R) Ray Kirschenheuter helped with the technical aspects of the film and offered a great insight to the “behind-the-scenes” of the film. As always, I ask that you keep us informed if you have moved, or changed your email address. If you are receiving the printed version of Pride, and have internet access, please consider getting the online version to save time in receiving it and at the same time save the Association printing and postage expense. Wanda Wagner LEFT TO RIGHT EDITOR, DOUG ROBBINS, LTC BRANDON ROBBINS, CSM JAMES BODECKER & COL ROBBINS’ WIFE, ANITA GORECKI-ROBBINS visit after the Regimental Change of Command at Summeral Field, Fort Myer, Virginia 19 June, 2012. PRIDE 4 HISTORIAN'S CORNER BY PETER J. MCDERMOTT Welcome to Summer. As I write this column, there have been three leadership changes in our Regiment. On 12 May, CSM James K. Bodecker assumed responsibility for 1st Battalion from CSM William Wilder and on 12 June, LTC Brandon Robbins turned command of 1st Battalion over to LTC Slade Beaudoin. 19 June saw the Regimental change of command when COL Dave Anders turned command over to COL James C. Markert making COL Markert the 79th Regimental Commander of The Old Guard. Our 15th Reunion is getting closer and if you haven’t registered as yet, the clock is ticking closer to the cut-off time. If you have seen the TOGA website, you will note that our Guest of Honor is the actor D.B. Sweeney who played “Jackie Willow” in Gardens of Stone. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of making Gardens of Stone at Fort Myer, so don’t delay and get your registration in today so you don’t miss this event. Returning to the Virginia Peninsula in Spring 1862, MG McClellan begins to move out of his camps around Hampton, Virginia to execute his plan to capture Richmond. The Regular Infantry Brigade, of which the 3d Infantry, under field command of Major Nathan Rossell, is part of the Army’s reserve and is one of the last units to leave Hampton. By 5 April, McClellan is approximately seven miles from the defenses of Yorktown, Virginia, which is defended by around 12,000 Confederate troops under MG John Magruder. McClellan, who has a large numerical advantage in troops over Magruder, then conducts a reconnaissance of the area around the Yorktown defenses and concludes that the Confederates are too deeply entrenched and well supported by artillery. He is also the victim of faulty intelligence by his Intelligence Service who report that the Confederates have at least 40,000 troops defending Yorktown and that another 60,000 troops are available to reinforce Magruder if needed. This news causes McClellan to stop his movements and he begins to dig trenches and gun positions in order to lay siege to Yorktown. Throughout the month of April, McClellan continues to build siege works and brings up heavy guns from the Union supply depot on the York River. He still believes that Magruder has the forces to make any attack on his lines costly for the Army of the Potomac. The 3d Infantry, still a part of the Army’s reserve, has been performing engineer duties building trenches and other defensive positions and bringing up supplies, ammunition and equipment to support McClellan’s plan for a siege. Major General Magruder is a crafty soldier whose hobby is amateur theatrics. He has been confusing McClellan all month as to his true strength by parading some of his units in a large circle around his positions and creating a lot of noise and dust. As these soldiers, artillery and cavalry pass an opening that is under observation by Union patrols, the illusion of many, many troops is passed back to McClellan who just digs deeper and wires Washington for more reinforcements. But Magruder also knows that this ruse can’t last much longer and once McClellan decides to attack, he could destroy all of Yorktown. He makes his decision and on the evening of 3 May, Magruder orders a brief bombardment of the Union lines to cover his withdrawal north towards Williamsburg and by dawn on 4 May, Yorktown is deserted. On the afternoon of 4 May, McClellan sends his cavalry and two divisions toward Williamsburg where they encounter the Confederate rear guard near Fort Magruder where, after a sharp fight, the Confederates continue their withdrawal toward Richmond. The 3d Infantry is still with the Regular Brigade and does not take part in the Fort Magruder action and does not arrive in the Williamsburg area until 9 May. For the next two weeks, the Regulars move up the Peninsula without encountering any Confederate resistance and by 18 May are encamped near White House, about 25 miles from Richmond, with the rest of the Army of the Potomac. On 18 May, McClellan reorganizes the army into two provisional Army Corps (which become permanent establishments in July) and the Regular Brigade is re-designated as the 2d Division of Fifth Corps with BG Sykes as Division Commander. This puts the 3d Infantry in 1st Brigade of 2d Division with COL Robert Buchanan as Brigade Commander. On 26 May. McClellan decides to divide the army by moving up both banks of the Chicahominy River and on 27 May, Fifth Corps is involved in a battle with a Confederate brigade near Hanover Court House. The 3d Infantry is not involved in this action but is ordered to proceed toward Hanover Court House on 28 May to be in position to support Fifth Corps if necessary. On 31 May, Confederate forces attack the two Corps (Fourth and Third Corps) positioned on the south side of the Chickahominy River in the Seven Pines area but are stopped by the rapid movement of Second Corps coming to reinforce them. During the evening of 31 May, the Confederate commander, GEN Joseph Johnston, is severely wounded and MG G.W. Smith assumes command and continues the battle into the next day, 1 June, but makes no progress and terminates the action. McClellan continues to occupy his current positions and requests more reinforcements still believing that he is outnumbered by the Confederates. For the next two weeks, McClellan remains in his positions without making any offensive movement against the newly named Army of Northern Virginia now commanded by GEN Robert E. Lee who was appointed by President Jefferson Davis to continue the defense of Richmond. McClellan then moves two additional Corps to the south side of the Chicahominy River and leaves the V Corps in position west of Mechanicsville. On 18 June, he issues a warning order to move his supply base from White House to Harrison’s Landing on the James River as he fears that the Confederates could cut the rail line that supplies his army. The 3d Infantry, now reinforced by the arrival of Company C and E, who had departed Ft Pickens, Florida, on 25 May and reached New York on 5 June only to be ordered to Virginia on 6 June to join the Regiment on 21 June, are positioned with 2d Division, V Corps, when the Confederates launch their attack on Mechanicsville on 26 June. CONT. PAGE #9 PRIDE 5 PRES. COL. CONT FROM PAGE #1 Friday is our special day to honor our fallen heroes with the laying of wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknowns and at our TOGA Memorial Monument. We then re-board the busses to go to Ft. Myer for a Parade, Pass and Review and special events with the 3 rd Infantry. The great barbecue with the Troops will follow. He works in the Caisson Platoon where he performs the duties as a driver carrying out the missions in Arlington National Cemetery. He told me he had never worked with horses before his army service and took training at the training facilities at Fort Belvoir, VA. He told me he has learned to be really alert around the horses. The stables at Fort Belvoir has 12 acres of pasture, for the horses. There is rotation between the horses from Fort Myer and Fort Belvoir. His Home Town is Elkhart, IN. He has been in the Army since 2007. He is wearing the new Stable Uniform in the picture. We thank Kevin for his service to the Old Guard, the U. S. Army and the Nation. More information on the event and the complete 15 th Reunion Schedule follows later in this issue. There will be a number of openings for nominees to serve on our TOGA Board of Directors starting January 1, 2013. As per our by-laws Art. VIII, Sec 1(a) nominations must be sent to the Board Secretary: Don Cofsky at: [email protected]. Nominations may also be made from the floor during the General Membership Meeting. Nominees must be a member of TOGA. We have established an agreement with Jostens Military Ring Company. They have designed a very prestigious ring for TOGA with our crest and a choice of stone in various colors in the center of the ring. A few of us have already purchased the ring and will be proud to share its amazing beauty with you at our Reunion. In the near future these will be available for sale from our Quartermasters store. As a point of interest, Jostens is also the supplier for the NFL Super Bowl Rings. We also need some volunteers to help set up and run the Hospitality Room Suite. Please contact our Sgt-at-Arms Doug Robbins: [email protected] Thank you and I hope to see you at the 15 th Reunion. “OLD GUARD” Dave David J. PRIDE 9 HISTORIAN’S COLUMN CONTINUED . On 27 June, they are ordered to retire to new defensive positions around Boatswain Swamp southeast of Gaines’ Mill and are then placed in the 2d Division’s line of battle in the vicinity of the McGehee House. By 2 PM, the Confederates were attacking all along the line but the steady defense by both the 2d and 1st Brigades, 2d Division, kept them from breaking the Union line. By 3:30, the 3d Infantry was engaged in heavy fighting supporting both the 12 th and 14th Infantry who were clearing the woods in front of their position. The 3d’s commander, MAJ Rossell was killed and command passed to CPT Thomas Walker who ordered the regiment to slowly withdraw back to their original positions to support batteries of the 5 th and 2d Artillery. Around 5:30, the Confederates renewed their attack and the 12th Infantry suffers heavy casualties as they are overrun. CPT Walker then orders four companies of the 3d Infantry to support the 12th and both units drive the Confederates back but are soon attacked again and forced back to a new position which they hold until nightfall. On 28 June, V Corps is ordered to march south and arrive at Savage Station around dusk. On 29 June, they pass through White Oak Swamp and halt at the Glendale crossroads where they remain in line of battle until after midnight before they continue their march toward Malvern Hill which they reach around noon on 30 June. The 2d Division takes up position and the 3d and 4 th Infantry are positioned on the extreme right of the division’s line. Late in the afternoon, the Confederates attempt to move on Sykes line but are forced to withdraw after suffering a heavy artillery barrage. This Union artillery barrage causes three members of the 3d Infantry to be killed in a friendly fire incident when canister rounds fired by a New York Artillery battery smash through trees where some soldiers are positioned and the three are killed by falling limbs.
