December 2015 - Broadway High School
Dear Gobbler Gab Readers, Best Wishes, Chief Powhatan of the Unimaginative Tribe P.S. These are the places where you can donate your time and money to help poor innocent children/old people. I told you they would show up, I keep my promises :) 1.Toys for Tots 2.Salvation Army 3.Make-a-Wish Foundation…………..Joooohhhhhnnnnn Ceeeennnnnaaaaa ...Look forward to next month’s issue for the Calendar of Events compiled by Michele Daigle... It’s Christmas! Well not really, but close enough. This is the month of snow and Santa, cookies and hot chocolate, presents and people telling you that it’s not about the presents. We all know that it is, at least a little bit, about the presents. However, I, being the editor of this wonderful newsletter, am supposed to steer you in the right direction. So, this is me pretending to be full of Christmas spirit! Help out organizations such as Operation Breakthrough or Operation Christmas Miracle; although these two organizations are not local ,they are still helpful to families in their area. There are also organizations here in Virginia that could use your help, and if you can’t find any of those - which will be impossible because they will be mentioned in this letter - then you can always just donate to orphanages or homeless shelters near you. You have no idea how just visiting these places can make an impact. Now that my moment of making you feel bad for never doing anything selfless is over, I can go back to being my normal self. Hello, this is Chief Powhatan of the Unimaginative Tribe. All I have to say is join Indoor Drumline if you can read music and have the qualifications for it, and also, audition for Beauty and the Beast because musical is so much fun. I was on stage crew last year and plan to be again this year, so if you want to meet me - or just help out because it’s something new to try - then join stage crew. We could always use more people to help push around 300 lb windmills. :) In addition, I would like to personally thank Mrs. Mitchell’s sixth period class for sending notes to the Gobbler Gab. Now we have some actually questions that will be helpful for students rather than the staff talking about made up predicaments. I’m sorry that this letter has been rather formal, but December is a big month, I’ll try to make up for it in the story I published later in the letter. Check out Dreaming of Demons: Prologue, and once again, send me your feedback. I’m more than happy to consider your changes and comments. Okay, I’m finished with all the boring stuff, let’s move on. Be happy! Buy your friends Christmas presents, and they will do the same in return. Enjoy deviled eggs and spiraled hams and whatever else your family does for this holiday. However, if you do not celebrate Christmas because you celebrate something else or because you just don’t celebrate anything than I wish a happy holiday or un-holiday to you too. I will be reading books, playing my xbox, and stuffing my face as I assume the rest of you will be. So goodbye for now, until next year. SPORTS Congratulations to Fall Sports Athletes! December 25 - CHRISTMAS December 31 - New Year's Eve World News -Michael Muellersman November 13th, Terrorist attacks around the city of Paris On November 13th, three coordinated teams conducted terrorist attacks around Paris. The combination of bomb blasts and shootings left 129 dead and hundreds more wounded. It started around 21:00 French time, when two suicide bombers detonated just outside the Stade de France with the third detonating in a restaurant near the stadium. Meanwhile in the center of the city, two popular nighttime spots had gunmen shooting at them. They first went to the bar and then crossed the street to a restaraunt. At the time of this writing, fifteen were killed and many more wounded in these attacks. The gunmen drove around a bit opening fire on quite a few restaurants around the area. The most fatal of the night was the Bataclan music hall attack, where the 1,500 seat venue was sold out. As the gunmen entered, they first fired upon the people at the bar. As they entered the main hall, they started firing into the crowd. People started to run away but some tried to lay flat on the ground, seeing as there wasn’t much cover. The gunmen started to fire upon the people lying down. At least one gunman was also reported to have climbed onto the balcony and started firing at the people up there. Eighty-nine people were dead and about 99 injured. Landmark win for the opposition party in Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi’s opposition party has won the landmark national elections by a landslide. The official results have the party winning the majority of seats in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city. The country's ruling military-backed party runs the election. Snappy Surveys -Madisen Hughes, Abby Olmstead, Ashton Streett, and Joseph Whetzel Hello, and welcome back to the undeniably greatest part of the Gobbler Gab: the Survey Section! It’s December, which means it’s time to stay at home and give people things in hopes they’ll give you things back. This month, we asked you guys two questions: Do you put up a real or fake christmas tree, and do you travel for the holidays? After gathering the data, we ventured off to the south pole (yes, the one down south) and asked the penguins to help us turn it into pie charts. Here are the results: If You Got a Problem...Yo, I’ll Solve It! Advice column featuring life gurus Cinna and Raisin Buns Question - Why do people criticize me for who I am? - I Am Me Cinna Buns- All your life I’m sure you’ve been told to always be yourself. Sometimes that can be really hard to do. For the longest time I pretended to be someone I wasn’t. And now that I’m actually being myself I’m really happy. If people can’t accept you for you, then they aren’t the kind of people you want to have in your life. Raisin Buns- Because they are super jelly of you and your awesomeness. Keep being you bae. You do you. Question -Why do people say they are against bullying but they bully people themselves? - Anti-Hypocrite Cinna Buns- Most of the time people say they’re against something, but then end up doing it themselves. Which sucks. Especially if that person tells you they’re against something, then does that same thing to you. The best way to deal with those types of people is to ignore them, or not let them get the best of you. People who bully want to see you react negatively. When you don’t give them the reaction they want, they may eventually stop. Raisin Buns- I’ll be honest with you I’m totally guilty of this. Most of the time they don’t even know they are hurting people. I sure as heck didn’t. So if you are hurt by a bully who’s against bullying, just tell them that what they did hurt. I’m sure they probably didn’t even know. Face-to-face confrontation is usually the way to go. Question - What are some tips for shy and awkwardly weird guys to be friends with girls? -Awkwardly Friendly Cinna Buns- Booooooy oh booooy. You have to believe in yourself. Accept your shyness, and embrace your awkwardness. Some girls like shy boys. The scariest part is isn’t even that scary. Just saying hi seems pretty intimidating, but chances are she’s been wanting you to talk to her for some time now, but is even more shy than you are. So in the words of Shia Labeouf, “ JUST. DOOOOO. ITTT!!!” Raisin Buns- HAHAHAHAHA no chance bruh sorry. Question- What should I do if I get invited to a party and can’t whip or nae-nae? -Quan Cinna Buns- Don’t go to that party. Raisin Buns- Let me tell you a story. You’ll go to the party, and everybody will yell, “HIT THE QUAN!!” because you can’t whip or nae-nae and you’ll be all like, “Whaaa?” and come to school with bruises and crap. And you’ll never, ever, go to another party. THE END We want to hear from you!!! Submit questions to the editor, ideas for surveys, problems for our advice gurus, and words of affirmation and motivation to our Gobbler Gab box in the library! THE PULSE December Do’s and Don’ts -Kyla Zugelder DO: 1. Get your holiday shopping done early! Don’t wait till last minute, to avoid stressful holidays. IF POSSIBLE, do your shopping during the week; stores are packed full on seasonal weekends. 2. Spread the holiday cheer. Listen to Christmas music, pull out those ugly sweaters, Jingle Bell Rock your way through the work week! 3. Think of others in this joyful season -- spend on them before yourself. Who knows, maybe someone too will think of others in this time, perhaps with that sweater you’ve been dying to get your hands on? 4. Wear those dreadful ornament earrings your mother got you, smile with her when she notices. 5. EAT LOTS OF CHRISTMAS COOKIES!!! DON’T: 1. Open your presents before its time. 2. Wear UGGS to every event. 3. Use the holidays as an excuse to put everything off. Do relax, but don’t fall behind. 4. Forget what this season is truly about. Dance with your Grandma at that annual Christmas party in front of your new spouse. Neither of them will forget it! 5. Forget those family pictures for holiday cards! As a two time state runner up, Chrissy says to achieve their goals and go all the way this year, the team needs to keep up the hard work in practice and play to their full potential when they’re on the court. Chrissy says, “The team is my family, we all get along so well. We work together and play together as one.” Not only are the girls teammates but they are all very good friends outside of basketball. “We just all get along so well and enjoy each others’ company, and I think that’s a big part of our success.” stated Delawder. When asked what basketball means to her she says, “I’ve played basketball my whole life, it is my whole life.” Chrissy’s favorite play to run is Gucci and Ratchet. She can’t wait to get back on the court and show everyone once again what Broadway girls basketball is really made of. Nichole Dean, a junior runner for indoor track, tells us about her experiences as a runner for Broadway. She’s been running since her freshman year and has became very close to her teammates in those years. She said they are a true family, and they are the most encouraging people you’ll meet. When asked what she runs she responds, “Well I like the 500 meter the best; it’s my favorite. But I actually run everything. Write that down!” she laughs. Dean, coming straight out of her Cross Country season tells us that it will be quite the change going from distance to sprinting, but she looks forward to indoor track because it plays more to her strengths as a runner. Nichole is excited to get back on the track and to spend more time with her team. ---Spotlights--- Senior Tanner Skidmore speaks highly on his future. After high school, he plans to go to either Radford, JMU, or VMI to continue his career as a baseball player. Tanner says that the saddest part about leaving Broadway would be parting ways with people that he’s been around and grown up with. Throughout his years, he says that the number one thing he’s learned is, “You realize who is with you and who is against you as you grow up.” Sometimes, making changes can be a good thing and leaving high school to pursue the next part of your life is one of those good changes. We wish Tanner the best of luck with his future and with his upcoming basketball and baseball seasons. Interviews and write ups completed by Alexis Corral, Emily Fear, Lauren Hulvey, and Ravyn Mongold Ten Things Every Woman Should Know -Eliza Johnson 1. You are not defined by a number. Your weight, your clothing size, the number of dollars in your bank account: None of these things are who you are. Would you rather... What a great conversation! 2. Never listen to the people that judge you. If they think they know who you are without ever bothering to speak to you, they aren’t worth your time. 3. People that insult you for wearing “too much” or “not enough” makeup are jerks. It is a well known fact that makeup can increase a woman’s self confidence, so if they’re trying to drag you back down, they’re probably just jealous. 4. Don’t let your life revolve around a boy. Boys are great, boys are fun, but you should never let one control you. If you find yourself feeling really dragged down by a relationship, it’s time to move on. 5. Dwelling on your mistakes for too long will only hurt you. 6. There is no shame in the things you love. Don’t be embarrassed to love reading or to passionately fangirl over your favorite TV show. Your passions are the things that make you. 7. Just as you are not defined by a number, you are not defined by the clothes in your closet, the likes that your last Instagram picture got, or your model of phone. 8. Be kind. A person’s first impression may be of how you look, but their lasting impression will always be of how you treated other people. 9. Be proud to be a feminist. 10. You are strong and incredible because you are a woman, not despite being a woman. You are beautiful and absolutely phenomenal. Never forget to love yourself. Pine Cone Ornaments - Start by going outside and looking for pine cones, or if you don’t live near a pine tree, you can buy some at your local craft shop. You will need white liquid glue, clear or white glitter, and if you want some beads. Grab a pine cone and put the glue all over it. Next roll it in the glitter or sprinkle it on top. Now you can put a couple green or red beads on it. When they dry hang them on the tree. Not only will they smell good they last for more christmases to come. Homemade Pine Wreath - For this one you will need a pine tree again. Break off small branches with pine needles on them. The size of your wreath depends on the number of branches. Now get metal hangers and untwist them from the top. Put them in a circle and figure out how big you want the wreath to be. When you have done that twist the hangers together now so it makes one big circle. Now get electrical tape (you can buy this in green so it blends in better) and begin by picking up one branch at a time and lay it on the hanger and tape it down. Layer each branch and lay them down clockwise so they’re all going the same direction. When you're done fill up spots you missed and fluff them. Top it off with a red bow and you have yourself a beautiful wreath. I can tell that it’s close to Christmas, not just because it’s December and I’m flat broke, but because I get to review one of my favorite franchises on one of my favorite consoles: it’s my own personal gift to myself. As mentioned in my review of the Sega Dreamcast, many arcade games were ported onto the Dreamcast, and truly one of the most popular is Crazy Taxi. Even to this day, Sega fans say that Crazy Taxi is one of the best games that the Dreamcast has to offer, and this is a position that I agree on. The gameplay is simple and yet addicting. You play as a Taxi driver, and the goal of the game is to pick up passengers and drive them to their destinations before the timer runs out, while driving 100 mph and performing stunts like near misses with other drivers! This might sound violent, which it kinda is, but don’t worry too much because, unlike Grand Theft Auto, the police never chase after you, you never leave your Cab, and no matter how close you come to hitting someone, every pedestrian quickly jumps out of your way. The High Score in this game is presented in the form of money, and for every successful delivery, your score goes up. Sometimes you’ll drive into places you wouldn’t even think to, like into the ocean! Normally, the main issues with open world games consist of a lack in direction and a lack of detail within the environment; Crazy Taxi suffers from neither of these problems, and because of it’s replay value, killer soundtrack, and excellent voice acting, Crazy Taxi continues to be one of my favorite Dreamcast games ever. The game was later followed by a sequel, Crazy Taxi 2. Sega was self-aware when making this game, knowing that they wouldn’t be able to top the original. So instead, they changed the environment and characters completely, and added some new elements of gameplay. Some of these new elements included multiple pickups, multiple stages, and “Crazy Hop”, allowing the car to jump over certain objects to save time. Sadly, while Sega clearly gave much care and attention to the first game, it’s obvious that the same care didn’t go into this game. Glitches are easier to find in this game, and while the environment of the first game seemed to resemble a coastal beach town, the environment to this game isn’t as interesting. Despite that though, Crazy Taxi 2 is still a fun game. If you just got a Dreamcast, then these games are perfect additions to your starting collection. Crazy Taxi - 5/5 Crazy Taxi 2 - 4/5 Star Wars: the Force Unleashed With the new Star Wars movie coming out, we can expect to see it followed by an entire chain of sequels, so to celebrate the occasion, I’m going to review one of my favorite Star Wars games ever; Star Wars: the Force Unleashed on the Wii. As the game begins, you play as Darth Vader taking down an army of Wookies and hunting down a Jedi. After killing the Jedi, Vader discovers the Jedi Master’s son, who Darth Vader secretly takes and trains as his apprentice, Starkiller. The rest of the game, you play as, the now adult, Starkiller. Now, I’m not going to spoil the entire story of the game, I will say that the story is extremely creative and keeps you guessing what’ll happen next. The controls are some of the best I’ve ever seen from “The Crazy Gamer” in a Wii game, and using the Wii remote can actually feel like using a real Lightsaber at times. The graphics, voice acting, and character designs are done well, and the soundtrack contains music from the movies. With nothing else to say, Star Wars: the Force Unleashed is one of the best Star Wars games out there. If you’re a fan of Star Wars, then this game is a must-have. 4.9/5 With so many Star Wars games out there, I’ll be reviewing several more. If there’s a certain Star Wars game that you want me to review, just place a request in the Gobbler Gab box in the Library. good, but they weren’t incredibly bad either. There just weren’t that many unusual Saturn games that I’m familiar with. Despite that, the Saturn also had a lot of good things going for it: like an extra accessory called Gameshark, which is basically a memory card that includes cheat codes for certain games, and can even play Japanese Saturn games. Plus, though not as popular as the later Dreamcast, the no reason to exist, but it doesn’t really do any harm by existing. If it seems interesting to you, I recommend it. 3/5 The Winner is… The results are in, the most likes go to the Nintendo GameCube! Sega to Saturn Finally, it’s time for me to talk about the Sega Saturn, Sega’s own console to combat the Playstation & Nintendo 64. Released slightly before the Genesis began to lose its sales, the Saturn was Sega’s first leap to 3D. Released in the United States in 1995, the console featured a stylish design and one of the best controllers I’ve ever seen. The games were… alright. They weren’t groundbreakingly Saturn also had online play and fortunately the Saturn didn’t take it too far and make onlineplay only games. Many of the popular Playstation games, such as Resident Evil, Alien Trilogy, and X-men vs. Street Fighter, were also ported to the Saturn. Sadly, the Sega Saturn didn’t live long, Sega only supported the system for a short period of time before moving on to the Dreamcast, so they didn’t make many games for it, and as a whole, the Saturn probably had Upon interviewing the people who prefer the GameCube, their reasoning seemed to be based, mostly, on nostalgia, meaning that they most likely grew up with the GameCube. In the end, you’re always going to like what you played as a child. DIVERSIONS Animal of the Month Elephants Diet Grasses, leaves, bamboo, bark, roots. Elephants are also known to eat crops like banana and sugarcane which are grown by farmers. Adult elephants eat 300-400 lbs of food per day! Cool Fact An elephant's trunk is actually a long nose used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting, drinking, and also for grabbing things—especially a potential meal. The trunk alone contains about 100,000 different muscles. African and Asian elephants have two fingerlike features on the end of their trunk that they can use to grab small items. Quote of the Month -Compiled by Alexis Corral “I was never insane except upon occasions when my heart was touched” - Edgar Allan Poe “You are at once both the quiet and the confusion of my heart” - Franz Kafka Fallout 4 - Lives Up -Zachary Phillips A message to all Fallout fans: turn up the old timey music and strap on your Pipboy because Fallout 4 has arrived. Fallout 4 came out November tenth and people were ecstatic, some even ditched school and work so they could play all day, and they were the sane ones. The Fallout games are known for their large open worlds and an endless amount of missions and side quests, and, like its predecessors, Fallout 4 did not disappoint. The wastelands of Boston hold danger, mystery, and adventure. Boston after the Great War became a dangerous radioactive wasteland full of giant molerats, deathclaws, raiders, and feral ghouls, but some people have still been able to scrape out a living in this desolation. As you explore the wasteland, you will run into these survivors along the way, some are friendly and some not so much, how you talk to these people will effect what they think of you. The new S.P.E.C.I.A.L system makes the skill tree much easier to navigate and use. DIVERSIONS Shovel Knight Shovel Knight is a wonderful little adventure game that will take you back to when video games weren't next-gen, super intense, or filled with guns. Based off of old platformers that came before 3D graphics, Shovel Knight is lots of fun and will fill you with nostalgia. However, I would not reccomend this game to people who are into the whole highaction and FPS scene. People who don’t like older games won’t like this game. Shovel Knight is for people who want to try something new and go back to when video games weren’t like what they are today. Don’t get me wrong, I love high action video games; my addiction to Fallout 4 is keeping me from playing more of this game. The reason I like this game so much is because it reminds me of when I was a little kid, playing Kirby Super Star and New Super Mario Bros on my DS. This game is available on most game consoles except for, ironically enough, the older ones. If you are into these sorts of games, then go for it. If not, I would suggest you steer clear from it for now. However, I can say for sure that Shovel Knight is a fun experience that will bring back that feeling of adventure in video games that you felt when you were a kid. The Very Organized Thief Review Get in and get out. You have a list, and everything must be checked off. Make sure the alarm isn’t triggered, and make sure you're quiet. Make it out with the loot, but make sure the owner doesn't get home before your done! Become the best thief around with The Very Organized Thief. The Very Organized Thief is an indie game that took the gaming world by surprise. This unique game gained a ton of traction with it's popular release on indie gaming site, GameJolt, and having videos on it done by famous YouTubers such as Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, and Pewdiepie! Also, it's not even done yet! This game is still being made, but the alpha version is already extremely popular. In terms of the game, it is tons of fun. I have played it over and over again, trying to get the best score. The game is scored by how much loot you can get, in the shortest time possible. You want to go fast also, because if the owner comes home and you don’t know what to do, the game gets terrifying really fast. Seriously, this game has scared me more than some certain horror games. Not for the faint of heart. This game can be downloaded on GameJolt and played on Kongregate for free. Go give it a try and support the developers. You won’t be disappointed. Ember yells from behind me, I turn around. My hands are clenched by my sides, and I can feel the rage burning through me. "You don't control me anymore! I'm doing this, and no one is going to stop me!" I drop my voice looking into her near golden eyes. She purses her lips, a habit she only does when she's thoroughly pissed. "I won't let you walk out. I've given you another option, an opportunity to change your life, and you're throwing it away. And for what!" She throws her hands up raising her voice. Lightning splits the purple sky illuminating the scarlet colored bridge below me. Her eyes trail up to the sky. "For what!?" I take a step towards her causing her to jerk back. A foot tilts over the edge, hundreds of feet separate us from the water crashing against the rocks below. "I don't want your opportunity! I don't want to change my life for you! I'm throwing it away for 'everything'! Something I can't get here." I bite the inside of my cheek and roll my shoulders back. Her dark auburn hair snaps against her skin as the wind picks up. She looks to me with tear-stained eyes and sniffles, shaking her head softly. "You could've been great, things could've been different." Her body tenses, and she wipes her cheeks. "I don't want things to be different, they're perfect the way they are." I can see the pain I've caused in her eyes, but this isn't my fault. Not entirely, 'they' did this to me. She takes single step back pushing off the slick bridge. I hear the air rush and I walk forwards. The lightning stops crackling as the dark clouds disappear, and the rain slows to a light patter on the steel. The water ripples below me, and she's gone. I'm free, at least for the moment. He was exquisite in the way he walked away, and didn’t look back. The snow had begun to fall heavily, and I could see flakes of it stuck in his hair. I had wanted to run after him and brush it away, but he was too far ahead. When his figure finally went out of my sight, I whirled around on the sidewalk and happily sprinted back to my house. That was the day everything had started, the day he gave me his phone number. His name was Collin, a new kid who had just recently moved down the street from me. All the girls were fascinated by him, but none more than me. At school I had always managed to catch his eye before he would quickly flicker them away. So the day he gave me his number, I was so happy that I immediately went home to text him. Ever since that day we had texted all the time. Romantic feelings for each other had flared, and I was going to ask him to be my boyfriend soon. Everything about him made my heart jump a beat. From his shining blue eyes to his messy brown hair, even every single flaw made me stop to stare in awe. It was later that Winter when everything changed. He was coming to pick me up in his rusty old car when the snow and rain had made slick sheets of ice on the road. I sent him a text asking him how soon he would arrive. Just then I saw his familiar car round the corner onto my street. When I looked into his windshield I couldn’t see his eyes. They were looking down, focused on something else. I figured out what he was doing, he was texting me back. His attention should’ve been on the road, where he was about to run on a sheet of ice. He hit send, and then a tree. 12 days of Christmas (Modern Edition) - Anonymous On the first day of Christmas My true love gave to me A bird stuck in my pear tree On the second day of Christmas My true love sent to me Two new birds And absolutely no bird seed On the third day of Christmas my true love sent to me Three ink pens Those stupid doves And a bird is still in my pear tree (Why? The 12 Days Of Christmas Repurposed -Patience Hamilton 12 days of cleaning the house, 11 hours of shopping, 10 glasses broken, 9 pounds of food, 8 kids fighting, 7 shirts missing, 6 tubs of decorations, 5 Christmas movies playing, 4 turkeys cooking, 3 days till Christmas, 2 exhausted parents, 1 happy family. autumn cold, colorful raking, jumping, crunching a turkey on the table fall -Joseph Whetzel Falling is the snow You hear your friends December weather Beautiful for a sleigh ride Hurry hurry Don’t miss the fun The world is a snow wonderland -Anonymous Bleeding -Aidan Cook My soul is gone Now that I walk this Earth I am empty My heart is torn Out of my chest I am hurting My eyes are red Tears stain my cheeks I am crying My body is numb To the pain I am dying To you I look normal But inside everything is falling apart Outside I am fine But inside I am bleeding -Aidan Cook “Are you planning on buying the whole store?” The woman behind the counter asked. She was old, really old, with long white hair that was braided and wrapped around her waist like a belt. Her skin was dark and leathery from many years of battling the elements. Even though she was old and fragile her eyes shone bright with wisdom and adventure. She was a wild spirit at heart. I blushed at her comment and handed her my basket. “I’m feeding an army.” I said and we laughed together. “So your army is the redheaded girl, the blonde boys, the two older men, and you?” I had to give it to her she was an observant old lady. “Yeah something like that. We’re only passing through though. We won’t be here long.” I said pulling out my payment for the food. The woman shook her head. “Take it. You need it more than most. You’ve got to stay strong and the redheaded girl looks like she hasn’t eaten a decent meal in forever.” The woman said. She had a point: Amber hadn’t had a meal in forever. Food wasn’t really one of Amber’s necessities in life. Being a Vampyre meant she didn’t have to eat human food even though she had tried to anyway. once when we were still little she had tried to eat an apple and ended up with her head inside the toilet for a hour. It had been funny to watch but I stayed with her through the whole experience rubbing her back when I wasn’t laughing and laughing when I wasn’t being her friend. “Thank you for the offer but I can pay. I don’t want to take away from your bakery.” I said placing the gold coin on the counter. She was about to protest when a man walked through the open door. He looked just like her. His hair was the same snow white but he also had a matching beard and mustache. His skin was pale from years of working in the mines and seeing very little sunlight. His gray eyes were bright with the same mysterious knowledge that she knew. He smiled at me, revealing very little teeth, and then dropped his things. He wrapped his hands around his wife’s waist and kissed her on the forehead. “It looks like someone is feeding the king’s troops.” The old man said looking at my basket. I tensed at the mention of the king and his troops. King Magnus, Amber’s father, was why we had ran from the castle in the first place. once he was crowned the peace between the Royals had disappeared. Treaties that had been in place for thousands of years fell apart and Royal blood was spilled in battle. Vampryes became the dominate race and all others became endangered. So far I had only seen Lycans used at the castle and met one Dalamary. The Faye and Angels had gone into hiding to protect what numbers they had left. “Thanks for the bread.” I said grabbing my basket. “No hon thank you. Before you leave town come back and I’ll give you more. I don’t want your army to starve on the road.” The woman said. I turned to leave but another coal miner stepped in my way. He was younger than the other, about thirty years old. His hair was dark but he had the same pale skin and gray eyes. When he saw me those gray eyes filled with hate. “Ma close the shop. There are Watchers and Lycans crawling through the city.” His words made my heart stop. Watchers in the city was not a good sign having Lycans with them was worse. The only reason to have Lycans was for tracking and I knew exactly what they were tracking. I shoved my way out into the open. ---Arts and Writing--- Excerpt from Silver Kiss ---Arts and Writing--- After the Eleventh Hour -Anonymous It all starts with a spark. Weird to think that such a little thing could wipe away everything you know in a split second. But the spark comes from when something or someone gives you hope, if even a slither. You give them your time and pour your soul into them and just when it seems to all be coming together they take every bit and piece of you that you gave them and destroy it. And that’s when the spark ignites. Then there is a fire. Every fire has its point of origin, its fading spark getting caught onto something, a finger snatching it away from your grasp, giving it life. After that, it rises and gets bigger and bigger until there’s no containing it. You can no longer give it any boundaries, it’s now out of your hands. Now there is the escape. You try to run, try to push through the crowd of people who are desperately trying to get away. You know how this all started, but you don’t want the blame. You just need to get out. But the world, as it often does, is working against you and now you’re caught. The fire licking at your heels, reminding you that what is done is done and it’s your turn to face your fate because of it. The captain left to go down with his ship. Something you started, something you can’t stop, something you have to deal with: the result. Alas, there’s smoke everywhere, it drifts through the air. The chaotic aftermath. Threatening to swallow you whole, to take you on its path. “How did it get there?” everyone asks. But nobody provides an answer, because in our heart we all know. We all think the responsibility lies on us so we keep the reasons to ourselves. What we don’t realize is that this is not a solitary fault, we all have our own contribution to the smoke. There is always something that gives us a spark, starts a fire in our heart, sends us running and then the most cruel of them all; leaving us as ash. Coffee -Erika Whetzel You’re dark and bitter, the aroma releasing through the house. Despite the fact that everyone tries to change you you are still necessary for me. They try and change your color, try to sweeten you, but I believe that that nippy taste makes you what you are. By Kasey Simmers The snow finally began to fall for the first time in years. It wasn't fast and it didn't stick but it was snow. My friends and their families sat on their roofed porches, just like me, and watched the crystals float to the ground. I stood and watched, one flake then two then three all slip out of the cloudy sky and slowly drift to the grass of my front lawn. It lasted for a few hours before dying down. Everyone who had set down to watch the beauty got up slipped back into their homes but not me. I sat there on my front porch in my favorite plastic chair and stared. I stared at the wet ground and my frosty breath. I waited till my breath disappeared and the moisture was sucked back up into the sky. Finally I stood. I pushed myself out of the chair and walked to the front door. ---Arts and Writing--Dual Narrative -Zachary Phillips The universe doesn’t care what day it is, it doesn’t care if it’s the coldest snowiest day in winter and you’re out of food and your car won’t start and you only have the thin jacket that you bought four years ago, if it wants you to meet someone then you’re damn well going to, but of course that’s not what I’m thinking as I step out into the knee deep snow, I was thinking about home much I hated my roommate, and how cold it was, and how stupid I had been when I decided not to take my car to a shop when I heard a strange noise coming from the engine. As I trudged along through the snow I decided to take inventory of my life. My name is. WHAAM... I always thought God was kind and benevolent, but I guess today someone forgot to get God his triple shot expresso this morning, how else do you explain negative fifty degrees and three feet of snow. I’m just lucky I don’t have to walk anywhere I think as I turn the heat all the way up. I adjust my pink sweater and try to look out the window, “AHHH” I let out an angry sigh, why would anyone have a birthday party today, I mean seriously I know she’s turning a hundred but why couldn’t they just reschedule it, I think about all the little annoyances that have happened this week first my cat died, then I lost my job, then I sat on that old man's sandwich. I Don’t use all indulge myself in self pity, because I think that there are people who have it it much worse then me, But even though I knew that I still did it. And as I thought God decided that it was time to give me something else to complain about, in the form of a man crossing the street right in front of my car. Are you a BHS artist?
