NGAT Legislative Task Force Activites
The Legislative Task Force visited Washington, D.C., in February 2008, and visited each of the Texas congressional delegation’s offices.
The Adjutant General, LTG Charles G. Rodriguez, and Deputy Adjutant General for Army MG John Furlow and Deputy Adjutant General for Air
Maj Gen Allen Dehnert represented the Texas Military Forces, while NGAT Task Force volunteers included LTG (Bvt-Ret) Don Daniel, Brig Gen
Don Harvel, COL Jeff Breor, LTC Rob Woodmansee, Lt Col Drew Daugherty, and NGAT Executive Director Ray Lindner.
NGAT hosted a Legislative Reception at Bullfeathers on 7 February and a Legislative Breakfast in the Rayburn House Office Building on 8
February for members of the Texas congressional delegation and their staff. Both events were well attended, and allowed members of the
delegation to meet members and their staff in a more relaxed social environment.
MAJ Justin Perryman attended the NGAUS Congressional Action Coordinating Officer (CACO) training session at NGAUS in March
2008. This is an excellent training tool for members of our Legislative Task Force, and we will continue to send new people to
this training each year.
Initial planning is underway for NGAT to make a second trip to Washington, D.C., in the fall to follow up on force
structure and equipment issues raised in February and to press specific personnel issues (e.g., health, education,
and retirement benefits). We envision a largely enlisted Task Force making this trip.
Early next year, NGAT plans to host an event at the Texas Capitol to honor Texas Legislators, and serve
as a forum for meeting legislators and staff and educating those in attendance about the Texas
Military Forces. We have not hosted an event like this for several years, and hope to make this a
biannual event. H

LTC James A. Spring Humanitarianism Award
The LTC James A. Spring Humanitarian Award recognizes an act of heroism and/or extreme humanitarianism involving the saving or attempt to save a life. LTC Spring was the Medical Battalion Commander in the 49th Armored Division in the mid-1970s. This year, the LTC James A. Spring Humanitarian Award was
presented to MAJ (TX) Roger Vertrees of the Texas State Guard.
On April 1, 2007, in response to a frantic call for help from his neighbor, MAJ Vertrees was helping his neighbor
settle her adult daughter in bed after the daughter suffered an epileptic seizure associated with insulin
dependent diabetes and severe kidney disease. When he noted that the daughter was not responding to the
diabetic medication, he directed that 911 be called for emergency services. While waiting for emergency services
to respond, the daughter’s heart stopped. While performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, MAJ Vertrees noted
that her airway was lost and she was suffocating. He then cleared the contents that were blocking the airway
and restored air circulation, thus saving the woman’s life. He then continued CPR for another 20 minutes until
emergency personnel arrived.
MAJ Vertrees actions were in keeping with the highest standards of the Texas Military Forces and reflect distinct
credit upon himself, the Texas State Guard, and the Texas Military Forces. H

Above All
The Air Force launched a new campaign to create a dialogue with
America’s communities of parents, influencers and potential recruits about
the critical role the Air Force plays in defending America’s future. The basis
of this campaign is the fact that the world has changed, so the way we
defend ourselves must change, too. In today’s changed world no one is
better positioned to keep America safe than the Air Force, because only the
Air Force has the vision and global vigilance, reach and power required for
today’s fight. The new tagline, Above All, refers to what we do and how we
do it. Go to www.airforce.com for more on the “Above All” Campaign.
ABOVE ALL, WE DEFEND AMERICA.
WE DO THIS BY DOMINATING AIR, SPACE,
AND CYBERSPACE

DEERS – Keeping Your DEERS Record Updated
It’s very important to keep your DEERS records updated, especially when personal eligibility information changes. This includes changes in
military status, addresses, and family status (marriage, divorce, births, etc). Mistakes in your DEERS record can cause problems with TRICARE claims,
FSGLI and other entitlements. Contact your nearest military identification (ID) card issuing facility to update your DEERS record. To locate the nearest
military ID card facility, visit the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) web site at www.dmdc.osd.mil/rsl, or contact the DMDC Support Office (DSO),
at: 800-538-9552 for further assistance. H

Camp Mabry Holds American Hero’s Day
Camp Mabry recently held American Heroes Air Show that showcased
National Guard equipment, vehicles, aircraft, and the talents of the Texas Military
Forces. Recruiters from various military, police, fire and rescue agencies were on
hand to talk about what it is like to be in one of these special roles. Throughout the
day there was live music by Wes Nickson, food and beverage vendors, rock wall
climbing, pedestal jousting, laser tag, military vehicle rides, miniature train rides,
reenactments of past military encampments, present day military equipment and
weapons drills, living history displays, and recreations of battles of the Civil War and
WWII. The 41st Rescue Squadron demonstrated a combat search and rescue. H
