FINE DINING AND WINE . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4
We happily celebrated our 100th year
Anniversary at the Des Moines Embassy
Club this last April. As we look forward
we can’t help but also think back and
find comfort in our Club’s history where
we have survived 6 wars, a depression
and several recessions. As a matter of fact
in the Fifties we lost our “amusement
devices” (slot machines), legalization of
liquor by the drink in “63” put a dent in revenue, a contentious move from
our 800 Locust clubhouse to the top of the Ruan Center in “75”, the Clubs
management by CCA, non deductibility of dues and consolidations and
mergers of our bedrock downtown business neighbors were all additional
hurdles!

| Des Moines Embassy Club Member Information and Amenities Guide
So indeed while we operate a little tamer these days many things remain
the same. We still are fulfilling central Iowa’s needs for beautiful locations
to bring people within Iowa and from a far together. We daily are making
life long memories for our members, brides, government leaders and
notably last February a State dinner for Chinese Premier Xi Jin Ping.
Lamentably gone now the doorman helping you from your carriage at
the Club doors, however he’s conveniently replaced with free underground
parking and Wi-Fi in all our spaces. Be assured despite all the changes we
have seen the luxurious hospitality delivered with a smile that the Clubs are
justifiably famous for, is sure to be the constant that serves us well for the
next Century.

Fine Dining and Wine
bon appétit!
When all four pieces of a successful meal come together —
cuisine, wine, service and overall ambience — you have the
experience you can expect from the Des Moines Embassy Club.
Whether it’s dishes inspired by classic French
cooking styles or contemporary approaches of
hearty regional fare, the award-winning chefs of
the Des Moines Embassy Club bring their culinary
knowledge, energy and imagination to every dish,
everyday.
Each DMEC Chef has established a reputation for
bringing refreshing, presentations to traditional
favorites and contemporary dishes alike. They
daily demonstrate how refined modern cooking
techniques can, and do, merge with traditional,
seasonal, and local ingredients to deliver meals
that are truly inspiring.
To complete the experience, our Club Sommelier,
Stephen Volkmer-Jones is always happy to consult
with our members on any questions or purchase
needs.
Club Exclusives from
Around the World
The Des Moines Embassy Club has always had a special
appreciation for international style cuisine and wines.
Annual French Chef Exchange
Every autumn, the Des Moines Embassy Club hosts a group of chefs from
Des Moines Sister, City St. Etienne, in the Loire Valley of France. The chefs
win the trip through a cooking competition. In addition to sharing their
award winning recipes, the chefs participate in a two-week series of
events where they both cook with, and for, Club members and guests.
They also exchange ideas with the Club’s own award-winning team –
yet another example of how the DMEC culinary team continues to
explore new ways to delight.
La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs
La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is an international gourmet society founded in
1950 in Paris to revive the traditions of the Royal Guild of Goose Roasters
chartered in 1248. The Chaîne is dedicated to bringing together those

who share a mutual interest in cuisine, wine and fine dining in a spirit of
steeped in appreciation of fine wine and
camaraderie. The Des Moines Embassy Club is one of the hosts to the Des
Moines Chapter. The group hosts special dining events throughout the year. spirits. The Club’s extensive wine cellar
ensures that every meal can be paired
with the perfect wine – whether it’s a
well-known favorite or a new discovery
from an up-and-coming vineyard.
Throughout the year, the Des Moines
Embassy Club plays host to vintners and
wine experts from vineyards across the
world – featuring tastings, pairing events
and wine appreciation dinners. Members
enjoy a varied and interesting selection of
wines both novel and familiar in a range
of prices.

Corporate membership in the Des Moines Embassy Club
makes it possible for executives and key employees to
conduct business in a setting that is unrivaled by any
other in the state. Corporate memberships are held in one
individual’s name, but owned by the company. A single
initiation fee covers multiple members, with monthly dues
paid for each employee member. Corporate membership is
available to any business with special rates available for
not-for-profit organizations.
Extend the Invitation
A long-standing tradition is that membership is by invitation only. Refer friends and associates, and the Club membership director
will follow-up with an invitation for lunch. If your referral leads to a membership, you’ll receive a $100 food and beverage credit, as
will the new member.

| Des Moines Embassy Club Member Information and Amenities Guide
Answer: Members may make reservations for any number
of people for any hour of operation. They can ensure they
always have the view they want from the dining rooms,
lounges and banquet rooms. Reservations can be made
directly via phone or online at www.embassyclub.com. For
Embassy West reservations call (515) 244-WEST and for the
downtown Ruan location, call (515) 244-CLUB.
How Do I Make Payments?
Answer: There are two simple ways to make your
membership dues payments.
1. Save with Prepayment!
Members who pre-pay their membership dues
for the year receive a 5% discount pro-rated for the
remaining months of the year.
2. ACH Option
Members interested in setting up an automatic
withdrawal for their monthly dues may do so at
anytime. This saves time and is especially convenient
for our members who travel in the winter and don’t
want to have to track monthly invoices!
Can We Split Checks?
Answer: There are no extra charges for splitting checks or
letting a non-member treat. Simply let your server know.
Guests are welcome to pay by check, Mastercard or VISA.
No cash please!
Can a Non-Member Use the Club
Unaccompanied?
Answer: Three times per year, members may invite family,
business associates to use the Club or sponsor banquet
guests without the member being present. The cost for a
visit by unaccompanied non-member guests is $10 for a
lunch visit and $15 for a dinner visit.
What is the Suggested Gratuity?
Answer: The Des Moines Embassy Club is unusual in that
it charges neither a monthly “Service” fee (sales taxable!)
nor requires a Food and Beverage Minimum! The Club
does however, have a service fee of 20 percent on food and
beverage sales in the dining room. The Club uses a “share”
system in the Dining rooms. This better distributes the
income from busy to slow days among servers, bus boys and
captains. Servers do keep 100 percent of the “Additional
Gratuity” when written in on the bottom line of a ticket.

history
The Des Moines Embassy Club
The history of the Des Moines Embassy Club maps closely
to the story of Des Moines itself. Over its now century
existence, the Club has served as a personal respite, social
outlet and business network for members. Many elements
of the Club have changed with time – sleeping rooms,
membership based on gender or political party affiliation,
games of chance, and occasional police raids – are part of a
rich, albeit occasionally dubious past. However, when one
harkens back to the original intent of the Club’s founding
members, it would appear that they would be pleased with
the Des Moines Embassy Club as it stands today.
The Early Days
Social clubs began to sprout up in Des Moines shortly after
1857 when the city was designated as Iowa’s capital. The
Des Moines Embassy Club actually traces its conceptual
14
| Des Moines Embassy Club Member Information and Amenities Guide
roots back to the Grant Club, which was established in
1885 and named for President Ulysses S. Grant. The Grant
Club was located at 514 Walnut and its board of directors
was presided over by notable Des Moines resident Major
Hoyt Sherman. The Club later merged with the Young
Men’s Republican Club and moved to 615 High Street. The
organization maintained its Republican affiliations, allowing
only Republicans to vote on club matters. The restriction
remained in place until the club ceased operation in 1933.
After the Grant Club closed, several other private clubs
including the Hawkeye Democratic Club, the first Embassy
Club, and Club Belvedere all attempted to operate at the
High Street location. However, all three succumbed to
economic troubles, in part fueled by a higher than average
number of police raids. History suggests that the close
proximity of the building to the St. Ambrose Cathedral and
Rectory drew unwanted attention to both illegal gambling
activities and the sale of alcohol. A fresh start to form a club
took place at the Hotel Fort Des Moines when the Gotham
Club opened, but it also received more than its share of
police attention. It was not until 1946 when the current
Downtown Embassy Club opened in the former Gotham Club
facilities that the now long-standing arm of the Des Moines
Embassy Club was born.
The Present
This past year the Des Moines Embassy Club once again
blazed a trail on the Club scene – moving from two City
Club locations to a single City Club and a new Suburban Club
location. This change reflected the changing demographics
and desires of the Club’s membership. A growing number of
members live, work, and play in the suburbs and have long
expressed interest in having access to a closer Club location
with expanded access in the evenings and on the weekends.
The new suburban location delivers just that with lakeside
patio dining, live music and a general “upscale casual”
ambiance which still offers hidden nooks and crannies where
it is convenient and comfortable to settle in with a laptop
computer, meet for drinks a light meal, or hold a meeting.
The suburban club also provides a new venue for formal
affairs with a private wine room for mid-sized groups and a
large event room that can host sit down dinners, galas and
weddings for as many as 350 people.
This City Club/Suburban Club approach represents the
“next generation” in Club scene and is an example of the
forward thinking the Des Moines Embassy Club’s leadership
has always exhibited as it looks for new ways to deliver the
Club experience members have come to both expect and
enjoy.
