For generously and graciously allowing me to be your 2013 President and represent our local chapter of CREW. It has been an experience and opportunity that I will always cherish and be grateful for. Seriously! I’m not being facetious for once! That is exactly what I experienced. I’m sure a few of you have noticed that I am one of the “seasoned” professionals within our organization so there are not too many options available at this point in my career to expand my horizons. Until CREW, I had never served on a board or held an officer position other than my various banking officer titles over the years. Serving as your 2013 President and as a board member for the past three years has been a very educational and rewarding experience for me. I am sad to see my presidential tenure end. I have always been terrified of public speaking and that was my worst fear in performing the presidential duties. But you were great and very generous with your support for my efforts. Before long, running the meetings and speaking in front of our group became second nature. I really enjoyed myself which was a totally unexpected result. I have all of you to thank for that outcome. I cannot say enough good things about my board. What a phenomenal group of women! We had some very lively discussions at times but always managed to find a way forward for the greater good of our ever expanding and changing chapter. Wtih dedicated and hard-working Committee Chairs, every year we improve our events, educational and outreach efforts, and in attracting the most talented women in commercial real estate to join us. I’m sure 2014 will be no exception. I encourage any and all of you that might be considering a leadership role within CREW that you should go for it. You will not be disappointed and although I held the title of President, running this organization and making it as successful as it is takes a village. I never felt like I was going it alone. There were always a multitude of eager women behind me offering their help, support, direction and advice. Sherry’s quote for the day from Audrey Hepburn: “As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands—one for helping yourself, the other for helping others”. On that note, I bid you Goodbye, Audios, Au revoir, Ciao and Auf Wiedersehen. You will not have to endure any more of my corny quotes or jokes; but, not to worry….I may be done with my tenure as your president but I have consumed too much of the Kool-Aid to go away for good. I will still be around to support, promote and advance our cause and any one of you that want to assume a leadership role in our awesome chapter of CREW! Sherry Read, President 2013 | CREW New Mexico Notes from the 2014 President As a charter member of CREW New Mexico it has been a thrill to be part of such an amazing group that is filled with extraordinary people. I am proud to be your 2014 President and am inspired by the continued opportunities that we are provided as members. We have such an active chapter and if you are not already involved I encourage you to do so in a way that works best for you. Your involvement will allow you to get to know the members better and learn more about our business community, which will benefit you in both your professional and personal life. You will realize you’re not surrounded by just business associates, but friends as well. I learned this past year that CREW members are the type that jump into any situation where they are needed and shine like stars. continued on page 3 Member Spotlights Lorena Chavez Amy Cherne CAPITAL CDC Abeyta, Weiner & Cherne PC What has been your most challenging issue in your job? What has been your most challenging issue in your job? If you could change one thing in your past, what might that be? What one word do your friends use to describe you? My job is providing an SBA loan program, the challenge is trying to make it as easy on the borrower as possible. I can’t think of anything specific, I can say if there is anything I could change I probably learned from it and it made me what I am today. What one word would your friends use to describe you? Fun. Who has had the greatest influence on your life? Why? My Mom. My mom was so well rounded, she worked at a middle school and that kept her young. She was strict but also a lot of fun. She taught me the importance of having Jesus Christ in my life. After she passed away, there were some students of hers who went to her services and told me that if it hadn’t been for her they may not have finished school. I thought WOW I’d like to make that kind of a difference in someone’s life. (I think was also my aha moment). When did you find out that “life is not fair”? It’s hard to answer this question, because in my opinion life is life and you have to take what’s coming to you. But you take it with integrity/ grace. What is your favorite book? Why? Riding Bicycles With Friends. (I loaned it to a friend and can’t remember who the author is) but I enjoyed it because it was fun read and it made me laugh. Where is your favorite place to travel and why? Maui. It’s beautiful and relaxing! The most challenging part of my job is finding a work/life balance. Being the president/owner of the company and being president/mom of the family poses some balancing challenges. Loyal. I have very close friends that I’ve known for thirty years (since high school) and we have been there for each other through the difficult times and there to celebrate life’s blessings as well. I am truly blessed to know that I have close friends that know everything about me, love me for who I am and are always there for me. Who has had the greatest influence on your life? My father had the greatest influence in my life. My father was intelligent, kind, successful, caring and he always set the bar very high for my sisters and me. Even though the bar was set high, he was there to encourage and support us. He always encouraged us to set our goals high, breakthrough into traditional male careers and to be the glass ceiling breakers. I am happy to say that his influence has paid off for us. I own and operate an accounting firm, my middle sister is an automotive research engineer, and my eldest sister was in on the ground floor of the “.com” boom of the nineties and has since retired from that career to teach math. What is your greatest attribute? Why? Hard work and perseverance. Through hard work and perseverance, I have been able to achieve my goal of owning my own business, having a family and not letting the bumps in the road of life keep me from getting back up and trying my best tomorrow. When did you find out that “life is not fair”? I learned that life was not fair when my father passed away at the age of 45 after a battle with cancer. What is your greatest professional achievement? What is your greatest professional achievement? When I started working at Capital CDC they were new to New Mexico and after one year, Capital CDC was the top certified development company in the State. What is your greatest attribute? Why? Honesty. It’s the right thing to do. 2 Taking the plunge to purchase the accounting firm. It was one of those outside the comfort zone decisions where you have to sit yourself down and say “I can do this.” What is your “ah ha” moment? The day I gave birth to my daughter was my “ah ha” moment. I looked into her eyes and I knew right then and there that I needed to be the best I could be for her and to pass on the love and encouragement that my father gave to me. My parents and siblings; I had the confidence when I left college to seek my future across the country with no contacts and no job. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? A vet....I was set to go to Texas A&M when I received a full fine arts scholarship to Washington University, which changed the course of my life. What is the one thing that few people know about you? I originally made my living as an illustrator. What is your greatest professional achievement? 30 years in business with my husband and 2 successful companies, in spite of no formal business training for either of us. What is your greatest attribute? Why? Attention to the details; it’s what distinguishes us from our competitors and keeps the referrals strong. What has been your most challenging issue in your job? Believing in myself and building my business from ground zero since 2008 when I was laid off. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I was a bit of a goofy kid - glasses, braces, athletic and a bit clumsy. I never knew what I wanted to be. I’ve always enjoyed people and made friends easily. One way to look at this is by not knowing what I wanted to be, life sent me a tapestry of winding roads and amazing experiences! When did you find out that “life is not fair”? Life is what we make of it. It is in our power as to how we react whether it be fair, unfair, blessed or stressed. My choice is to remain faithful and trust I am exactly where the good Lord wants me to be. What is the one thing that few people know about you? I am an artist and enjoy painting with water colors and pastels. Our home is my gallery. If you could change one thing in your past, what might that be? I would have spent more time on my education. Who has had the greatest influence on your life? My Mother. She was an amazing woman. She raised 4 children alone. Taught us about the love of God and the values we needed to live a good life. She was an inspiration to us with her positive attitude through her 10 year battle with cancer. What is the one thing that few people know about you? I lived in Hawaii for about a year when I was 16. Fun times!! I just returned after almost 40 years meeting my sister at Oahu’s Disney Resort last August. Where is your favorite place to travel and why? My husband and I LOVE Cabo. It is just soooo beautiful there. What is your greatest professional achievement? I’ve had some good sales achievements over the years, but, when I was young raising my boys I sold a product called Home Interiors and Gifts. I was given the position of Sales Manager over the area we lived. I was training and traveling. Notes from the 2014 President (continued from page 1) I know this first hand locally, but also on a national level. It was an amazing experience to attend the Leadership Conference last summer in Scottsdale and the CREW Convention in Dallas. Attending these CREW Network events was very helpful in preparing me for my year as President. Being able to reach out to other chapters and hear how they address challenges and learn new ideas for activities, fund raisers, education and growing the membership. And sharing all that our relatively small and young chapter has accomplished has given me a great sense of pride. We have been very successful in our accomplishments since we began in 2007. This was made possible because of all of our members who have stepped up to get involved and to build the strong foundation that we all stand on. “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” We are strong and united in the success of our chapter and in helping each other to grow as individuals. I stand tall because you are all beside me with each step. Together we are extraordinary. Shirley Anderson, President 2014 | CREW New Mexico 3 Welcome New Members Welcome Miriam Freeman, Director of Marketing, Mike’s Quality Painting Miriam is a partner at Mike’s Quality Painting. Her primary task is marketing director which keeps her active and involved in all aspects of the business including advertising direction, customer appreciation programs, brand recognition strategies, market expansion and new client development. She writes a monthly newsletter for the company, stays active in several philanthropic organizations as well as multiple networking groups. Miriam challenges herself to stay inventive and involved with the community; she says, “It is all about building relationships and being original and fresh to set ourselves apart”. Aside from her position at Mike’s Quality Painting, Miriam juggles an active schedule from being a wife to Mike and mother of two young children Hannah and Matthew. Welcome Joanie Griffin, Griffin & Associates Joanie has owned Griffin & Associates for 24 years. Griffin & Associates is the leading integrated communications firm in NM providing marketing, advertising, public relations, websites, social media and online and new media. Joanie has been in the communications field for over 30 years and is the only communications professional in the state to receive the lifetime achievement award from all three professional organizations, the American Advertising Federation, the American Marketing Association and the Public Relations Society of America. Joanie has worked with many commercial realtors and developers and looks forward to contributing to CREW. Welcome Terri Dettweiler, First Vice President, CBRE Terri achieved the title of First Vice President at CBRE in June of 2007. With years of commercial real estate experience Terri earned the coveted SIOR designation in March 2007 and served as the NM SIOR Chapter president for the years 2010 and 2011. She was awarded the coveted Commercial Association of Realtors NM (CARNM) “Broker of the Year” award in 2001. She is past president of CARNM, as well as past president of the Leasing Information Network. Significant assignments include teaming with the CBRE|NM investment group to represent local developer Chant Associates on the disposition of their 569,000 SF portfolio of office and industrial buildings in 2007. Landlord representation includes national clients: Trammel Crow, HRPT, Rosemont Properties, Forest City Covington, GE Capital, Washington Federal and Wachovia as well as local clients, Presbyterian Healthcare and Carlo Inc. Additional tenant representation includes: Boeing, Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and most recently Los Alamos Technical Associates, (LATA). Welcome Kate Potter, New Business Development, Contract Associates Kate is a business development, marketing and advertising professional with a long standing passion for interior design, construction and architecture! Kate is responsible for new business development at Contract Associates. It is her pleasure to promote New Mexico’s preferred Haworth contract furniture dealer - “Best in Class” for 2012 and 2013. Contract Associates is a solutions provider for functional, sustainable, flexible commercial environments – government and corporate offices, medical clinics and hospitals, schools, banks, worship – you name it. Their newly renovated showroom is located in Old Town, and they are a minority woman-owned and operated small business. 4 Welcome New Members Welcome Anne Cumming, Assistant Property Manager, Trigild With 17 years of commercial real estate experience, Anne has worked in many capacities in the development, acquisition and management of high rise hotels, office buildings, condominiums, retail centers and mixed use projects in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and San Diego. Anne also spent two years working for Wal-Mart doing acquisition and transaction management and site location due diligence for projects in California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Currently Anne oversees a multi-state portfolio of commercial assets. Welcome Christine Chaves, Qualifying Broker/Owner, Chaves & Clark Real Estate LLC Christine is an Albuquerque, New Mexico, second generation real estate broker/owner. She has been in business for 14 years, specializing in commercial, residential and investment real estate brokerage. Christine is a member of the Commercial Association of Realtors (CARNM) and the Greater Albuquerque Association of Realtors (GAAR), and a Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) candidate. Christine describes her focus as serving the needs of people seeking solutions in real estate, maximizing their investment, and finding the property that best suits their needs. It is a family business that was established in 1947. Julie and her sister Jill Mowery Litt are the present owners continuing the legacy of the family owned and operated business. Rader Awning & Upholstering specializes in custom awnings, shade structures, cushions, specialty product manufacturing, and any type of fabric repairs. Justine and Deneen just closed a $1.5 million loan for a refinance of an owner-user property. The borrower didn’t have a preference on escrow officer, so Justine recommended a fellow CREW member. The appraiser on the project, also a CREW member, was Meg Randall. On Wednesday, December 11th, 84 CREW members, sponsors and guests attended the annual Holiday Luncheon at Tanoan Country Club sponsored by Brycon Construction. It was the final event of 2013, and as usual it was a big hit with members old and new. Thank you Events Committee! Kudos to CREW Members Justine Deshayes completed her first Duke City Marathon in 5 hours and 48 minutes which is a 13.17 minute mile. Justine says, “as I ran longer and longer distances, I received support from friends, family, co-workers, and even CREW members to accomplish my goal of completing a full marathon. The top 5 fastest women ranged in age from 25-54, which actually makes me want to run more in the future!” Mary Jo Griffen, Tiffany Gaede, Rosemary Breehl, Marti Partridge Ann Jarrell, Shirley Anderson Outreach Event Debbie Dupes completed her first (race of any kind!) in the Duke City Half Marathon in 2 hours and 56 minutes which is a 13.28 minute mile! Debbie decided in December 2012 that she wanted to run a half marathon by the end of 2013, and she wanted something that she and her college-aged son could do together! Their next race is the Dallas Rock ‘n Roll in March. Congratulations to both Justine and Debbie on setting a goal and reaching it! You are both an inspiration to all of us! With high attendance, abundant networking opportunities and one of the strongest speaker lineups in recent memory, the Dallas event drew praise from attendees from all areas of the commercial real estate industry. Approximately 1,000 attendees participated in the event, making it one of the most popular conventions in its history. The 2013 event was centered on the concept of “The Power of Perception: Shaping your Future,” and attendees used it as a platform for making new business connections, continuing their professional development and advancing their careers. According to the post-event survey, 98% of attendees reported making new business connections, with 66% reporting five or more connections made. Of those who made connections, 35% reported that a deal was initiatied on site or that they expected one to be initiated within the next year. “The 2013 convention was one of the best-received events we’ve ever conducted,” said Susan Hill, CREW Network president. “We’ve heard overwhelmingly positive feedback on the quality of the speakers, the programming, the networking opportunities, as well as the learning excursions. We’re very thankful to all our partners who helped us put the event together, and especially to our CREW Dallas chapter, who were our hosts for this fantastic week.” 7 Keynote Speaker - Charlott Jone Anderson, Dallas Cowboy President Keynote Speaker - Barbara Corcoran Keynote speakers This year’s event featured an impressive lineup of keynote speakers. On Thursday, attendees were regaled by real estate mogul and “Shark Tank” regular Barbara Corcoran, who offered a funny, frank and sometimes brash look at the lessons she’s learned in business over the years. Tom Friedman, New York Times columnist and author of “The World is Flat,” presented his views on what America needs to do to restore its leadership in the new global economy, as well as what we as individuals need to do to stay on top of a changing world. On Friday morning, industry expert Mark Gibson of HFF provided insights into the future direction of the capital markets, while later that day, futurist and author David Houle spoke about how the current technological convergence will shape our lives over the next 20 years. Charlotte Jones Anderson, owner and chief brand offiicer of the Dallas Cowboys, was also the featured speaker for the Night of Outstanding Women awards dinner and program.
