If you have not picked up a tennis racquet yet, or are a bit rusty, there is no better new year’s resolution then to get out on a tennis court and learn the game. Our Patrick Sheahan staff of pros will be more than happy to Director of Tennis/ make your 2016, “Your Tennis Year”. I Operations am confident that once you try [email protected] our program, you will be hooked. Never been a better time to learn, play and compete in America’s fastest growing participatory sport. Our junior tennis program is increasing in numbers and skill level. I speak for everyone on our staff when I say that nothing is more rewarding in our jobs than to see the youngsters succeed in the sport and grow their love and understanding of the game. If you’d like to sign up your child, please contact our pro shop and our Director of Juniors Rafael Curbelo will be more than happy to find the right class and instruction for your future star. I’d like to thank each and every one of you who has made the Oaks Tennis program a part of your lifestyle. Thank you for our support I hope you and your family join us in 2016 as we continue to make the Oaks tennis program the premier tennis facility and program in South Florida. See you on the courts! Sincerely, Patrick Sheahan Director of Tennis/Operations Kyle LaCroix Assistant Director of Tennis Member Profile Fred Norkin Know Your Staff! William “Willie” Arnett – Tennis Court Maintenance Supervisor. In this issue, we are stepping out of the pro shop and stepping onto what so many of you have enjoyed and deemed “the best” over the last 11 years, our Tennis Courts! Who better to profile than the man responsible for making our courts hands down the best courts you will find anywhere. He is our Tennis Court Maintenance Master Professional William “Willie” Arnett. Willie has been here for almost the entirety of the Oaks existence and is the supervisor for the court maintenance staff. The Oaks is grateful to have him and his expertise overseeing our award winning courts and grounds. Let’s find out a little more about Willie What was your very first job? I worked as a dishwasher when I was 15 years old at a restaurant called “Frankies” in Fort Lauderdale. That job taught me so much about responsibility, work ethic and doing the right thing. Where is you dream vacation destination? My wife and I have always talked about going to the Bahamas. We’ve planned trips there but something always comes up. I am determined to get there one day. Favorite sports teams? I love sports! My whole life I’ve been a huge Oakland Raiders fan. The days of Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen will always be fresh in my memory bank. I also like the Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant. It’s going to be a tough day when he retires. Favorite Oaks Memory? It’s not so much a memory but a feeling. Getting along with the entire staff, knowing we have the best facility in the business. Seeing the members and knowing they appreciate the hard work my staff and I put into our jobs. Kyle LaCroix Assistant Director of Tennis [email protected] What is the one thing every tennis player needs to know about our courts? Clay courts need constant daily maintenance. They are a living, breathing animal and should be provided the necessary care. If you take care of them, they will take care of you. How long have you lived in the Oaks? We’ve been living in The Oaks for 4.5 years What is your job and title? I am a Periodontist and own my own practice here in Boca Raton: The Florida Institute for Periodontics & Implant Dentistry How long have you been playing tennis? How many times per week do you play? I started playing tennis when I was nine years old (35 years ago) but have started and stopped intermittently throughout my life. I play 2-3 times per week. What is your favorite part about the Oaks tennis program? My favorite part of The Oaks tennis program is the camaraderie with the other guys. It is fun. I work long hours and love what I do. I spend a lot of time with my family too and love every minute of it but The Oaks tennis program gives me an opportunity to go out and have some laughs, get some exercise and have some fun with guys my own age. Advice for any members who may be interested but have not yet tried The Oaks tennis program. My suggestion is to come out on a Saturday morning for the Men’s Clinic. It is a great way to meet new people. There is no effort necessary beyond signing up and showing up. The pros match you to a group based upon ability. The guys that participate in the clinic are all very friendly and just want to have a good time. Favorite tennis shot? Thanks to Kyle, my backhand is my favorite shot! Favorite player and why? I love the players from the 70s and 80s. In particular, I love Jimmy Connors! He was a gritty player. Ladies Tennis Teams The Oaks remains prideful of our tradition of producing and maintaining successful and competitive ladies tennis teams. Our history of competing in the South Palm Beach County Women’s Tennis Association (SPBCWTA) as well as Palm Tennis League over the past 11 years has seen us field over 70 teams and win numerous trophies for not only our outstanding play, but just as importantly, our sportsmanship. Currently, we are planning our teams for the 2016-2017 Ladies Team Season. If you would like to be part of a winning tradition and positive, cohesive team atmosphere, please contact us in the pro shop to get more information. I am originally from Sweden and have professional degrees in Music and Business. Since I was a child, I was active in ballet, gymnastics and was literally an exercise enthusiast. I decided to expand into the fitness area as a young adult when I first joined a gym. I have now been AFAA group fitness certified since 1998. Today, I have well over 15 years of experience within the fitness industry and thrive on the new challenges and growth in this industry. I have worked with all ages, from children to senior Do you have any hobbies? Fitness is truly one of my passions and I have always loved to challenge myself to be stronger and better. Other interests that I have are, dancing for fun and reading. I am mostly interested in self-improvement topics and techniques; always looking to improve myself and head forward in life. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? I have been to quite a few places and I would say that I had an amazing time when I went to Egypt and saw the pyramids and the temples. I couldn’t believe that I was inside of the pyramids and that I got to experience a little bit of the beginnings of the human race! The whole trip was truly life changing. What are three things on your bucket list? • Go on a trip to India and Nepal. • Go to China and walk on the Great Wall • Get a Scuba diving certificate What is your favorite thing about working at The Oaks? First of all, I love what I do! I currently teach exercise classes where there are big groups of 25+ people, so what I cherish at The Oaks, is the smaller, much more “personally oriented” atmosphere. I can truly get to know members for who they are and then more personally assist them in their individual training. It’s so much more fun and rewarding and it makes it possible to bond with everyone! I love the variety of the age groups that I meet. I’m looking forward to the renovation of the gym and to all the new options that will be available for personal training. I like to train people who are in a dance or sports program, kids or adults, as well as the senior population. I have a lot of skills, patience to help, and motivation to improve people’s personal goals and desires. Why would you recommend the gym and fitness classes to other members? The classes are all phenomenal and the instructors are awesome. From spin to bootcamp, mat pilates and reformer, they have something for everyone. The staff keeps you motivated and keeps you going!
