August was the busiest month that we’ve had. August 1st, I had a chance to take part in our third annual Bowl-A-Thon. My wife Anna enjoyed bowling more than I did. They gave us “the Best Effort award” for trying. But I enjoyed it watching how others did. Overall, we had a lot of fun together. I also took part in our Golf Tournament on the 18th. It was a learning experience for someone who goes out there the first time in any tournament. But I had some good partners that played well - my good friend Ted, Mr. & Mrs. Tseng. Otherwise, they might call off the game due to darkness. People also enjoyed the Lobster Clambake on Saturday, the 22nd. If we included the general meeting that we had at Kapok Seafood Restaurant, We had several successful fundraising events. And, we are also winding down the summer with another A’s and Seattle baseball game on September 5th. It’s like let’s do it again Sam. Let’s root for the A’s to get even with the Seattle Mariners this time. Family Bridges invited me to help them run as a Charity King for the concert fundraiser coming up on November 21, at the Oakland Oracle Arena. A popular musical group - Grasshopper will be performing this year. Being kind hearted as I am, I could not say no. Also, Family Bridges had honored Wa Sung Community Service Club back in June of this year and our members can support them by either being a sponsor - they have different sponsorship levels and individual ticket levels, place an ad in their program and/or buying raffle tickets. Please think ahead of what you want to do for the club in the coming year. There are many areas that you can help or learn to help. Get in touch with the different Chairs of our events and sign up to volunteer! 2 New Jr. League Member Calvin Dong sworn in at the August General Mtg New members Jende Huang, Austin Lew(JL) and Sonny Louie being sworn in at the April General Meeting At Gourmet Seafood Restaurant 2015 OFFICERS & BOARD OFFICERS President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Social Director: Newsletter Editor: Howard Lee Kinley Wong Peggy Woon Alvin Liang Donna Chan Chu, Raymond Tang, & Gloria Gee Deborah Pan DIRECTORS (2015-2016) David Chang Cynthia Quon Jeff Quon Allan Wong Genie Young Past President: Board Advisor: WSCC Director: Jr. League Rep: DIRECTORS (2014-2015) Karen Dea Audrey Huie John Lew Melanie Lew Annis Skousen Alex Lock Doreen Lew Arnold Mew Melanie Lew Edgar Woo and Yvan Fung 3 4 5 6 7 8 The Wa Sung Community Center’s 3rd Annual Bowl-A-Thon! By: Melanie Lew The 3rd Annual Wa Sung Community Center Bowl-A-Thon struck up the summer scene at Earl Anthony’s Dublin Bowl on Saturday, August 1, 2015. This year, we had more participants than last year, some returning and many new! Recently inducted Junior League members, Stanley Moy and Leon Zhang, and returning bowlers from afar, Kelley Wong from Silicon Valley and Hugo Abez from Los Angeles, came out to support us and have some fun. This year we did “league-style” bowling, which has players alternating lanes when bowling each turn. All participants were being judged to place in one of five categories: best series score for 3 games, best effort, creative bowling style, most first thrown gutter balls, and highest sponsorship. Leon Zhang swept the creative bowling style category with his funky thrust throw! He had all eyes on him as he threw the ball and slid on his knees down the lane. Howard and Anna Lee shared the best effort win with a cumulative score of 184. Newcomer, Joshua Phelps had 16 first-thrown gutter balls earning him a gift card to In-N-Out. Returning champion, Dennis Yee, trumped the best series with a score of 604; and he and his wife, Happy Wing, brought in the most sponsorships for a third year! Congratulations to all the winners! Everyone’s energy showed through their sportsmanship as teammates encouraged and praised each other. The bowling alley was full of cheer, laughter, high-fives, and memorable moments. Doreen Lew, our photographer, captured highlights of the event. To cool off from the heat, everyone received a sweet treat at the Dublin Yogurtland. Bowlers got creative with their mountain of froyo by adding delicious toppings and colorful syrup! For a 3rd year, Dublin Yogurtland partnered with us and donated a portion of the proceeds back to the Wa Sung Community Center. The WSCC would like to thank everyone who came out to participate, sponsor, and support the event. Thank you to the many Wa Sung volunteers who helped fill the goody bags and ensure a smooth registration check-in process, Earl Anthony’s Dublin Bowl, and Dublin Yogurtland. We appreciate all of your support and look forward to another year on the lanes! The weatherman cooperated with great golfing weather, sunny but with a cooling breeze to keep the golfers from overheating. The past 3 days were hot with days over 100 degrees; the cool down could not have come at a better time! The golf course was challenging with rolling hills, large sand bunkers and small greens. Adding to the challenge to keep the scores down we had ducks of all sizes and kinds, several coyotes were checking out our carts so we watched their movements as we moved about the fairways and greens always watching to make sure they did not take off with our snacks or water from the carts. Steady breezes on the back 9 kept all the golfers pressing to keep their shots low and long not wanting their shots to get stuck in the winds and losing control. We want to thank the volunteers for the outstanding job they did at the beginning of the tournament by staffing the tables; we had Cindy Quon, Donna Chan-Chu signing up the golfers. Selling the mulligans and magic string was Laura Chan. Making sure all the golfers received their lunches was Doreen Lew, Cheryl Yukumoto and Genie Young; also assisting were Edgar Woo and Malynda Norstadt. We had a total of 34 golfers who came to play and judging from the scores they were geared to play and score well. Our winning foursome with the low net score of 64 was Ben Wong, 15 Rob Conrad, Peter Ho and Jing Zhou; great job guys! Coming in with the low gross score of 65 was the team of Gerry Wong, Scott Wallace and Gilbert Cardenas; wow that’s playing as a team! Winning the longest drive on hole #12 was Jing Zhou. When I got to the tee box I could not see the marker. It was so far down the fairway! On the closest to the pin the winners were: Ben Wong #7, Tim Chu #10-also the Dixon Challenge and on #17 Frank Chiang and Ching Ou our only women golfer! Just awesome drives and a great way to score on those tough par 3’s! Unfortunately we did not have a winner for #4; it was our money hole where the player closest to the pin would win money, a 50/50 sharing of the money collected from all golfers wishing to participate in the jackpot for that hole. The money collected will be carried over to next year and will make the money hole for 2016 huge! Monitoring the money hole were volunteers Edgar Woo, measuring, Genie Young taking pictures and Doreen Lew collecting the jackpot money – many thanks for being out at the green for all 4 hours of the tournament and taking all the great pictures of the golfers as they came to the 4th hole! During dinner we auctioned a Round of Golf for 4 at Sequoyah Country Club donated by Wa Sung member Guy Dilling and 4 Box Seat tickets to the Oakland A’s baseball game in 2016 Volunteers Eugenie Young, Laura Chan, Donna Chan Chu donated by another Wa Sung ,Doreen Lew and Cheryl Yukumoto member – Kinley Wong. Many thanks for the generous donations by Guy Dilling and Kinley Wong! Also during dinner we had a few door prizes which were awarded by raffle tickets distributed to all golfers attending the dinner! Some of the prizes awarded were gift cards to Starbucks, rounds of golf at Roddy Ranch, golf balls, bottles of wine and Clambake tickets! We want to thank all the sponsors; Dr. Lawrence Ng, Arnold Mew, Annis Skousen, Jeff and Cindy Quon, Cheryl Wong, Clayton and Cheryl Yukumoto, Deborah Pan, Pete’s ACE Hardware and Melanie Lew for their generous donations to the tournament. During the dinner Tim Chu surprised us and gave Wa Sung a $500 donation for trophy’s for the 2016 Golf Tournament! WOW we are off to a great start on the 2016 Golf Tournament which will be our 10th Annual Golf Tournament!! Thank You Tim Chu for your generous donation! We want to thank all the golfers who gave of their time and energy to participate in our golf tournament, the Co-Chairs and the volunteers who made the event work smoothly and go without a hitch, and the sponsors who were very generous in their donations to the tournament! We hope to see everyone back in 2016 for our 10 th annual golf tournament which from all indications will be the best! Stay tuned for more details! 16 Roland Hui® and Friends John Lew(L) Arnold Mew (red shirt) and Friends WA Howard Lee and Ted David Chang(L) Jeff Quon (M) And Friend 17 18 Everything You Need to Know About Nominations* by Roland Hui Every year at the October general meeting, we will nominate candidates for Officers and Directors for the following year. Election will then take place at the November general meeting. The Officers consist of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Newsletter Editor, Treasurer and the Social Director. Since they each serve one-year terms, all officers will need to be nominated and elected each year. There are also eleven Directors serving two-year terms on a staggered basis. Either five or six Directors need to be nominated and elected each year. This year, we need to elect six Directors to serve in 2016. According to the By-laws, here are the duties of the Officers and Directors: The President shall preside at all meetings of the membership and the Executive Board as Chief Executive Officer. The president shall appoint all standing and ad hoc committees. The President shall act as the ex-officio member of all committees except the Nominations Committee and the Perpetual Scholarship Fund Committee. The President shall oversee all events and activities of the Club. The Board may assign other duties to the President. The Vice-President shall perform duties of the President in the absence of the President. The VicePresident shall coordinate development of the community service projects, fund-raisers, charities, and membership activities. In addition, the Vice-President shall serve as an ex-officio Trustee of the Perpetual Scholarship Fund Committee, during the term of office. The Vice-President shall prepare the budget for the Administration Fund and Charity Fund. The Board may assign other duties to the Vice-President. The Secretary shall keep all records, except financial records, record the minutes of all Board meetings, maintain a list of all standing and ad hoc committees, and write all external correspondence. At the end of each calendar year, the Secretary shall prepare and cause to be permanently bound Corporate records for the preceding year. The Newsletter Editor shall edit the monthly newsletter for membership, including announcements and General Meeting notices. The Newsletter shall also maintain the Club’s mailing list and membership roster. The Treasurer shall receive all monies and keep all financial records. The Treasurer shall provide quarterly financial reports at the Board Meetings and prepare an annual financial statement. The Social Director shall coordinate the development of the social activities of the membership at General Meetings. The Directors shall provide leadership to the membership and give direction on policies and procedures of the Club. The President will assign tasks, including committee chairs, to Directors. 19 A two-member Nomination Committee is tasked with seeking qualified candidates to run for Officers and Directors. This Committee is appointed by the President and approved by the Board. For 2015, the Nomination Committee is TBA(To Be Announced). The Nomination Committee will nominate one or more candidates for each vacant office and present them at the October general meeting ("Nomination Night"). All members present at that meeting can also nominate additional candidates or self-nominate for each office. After nominations are completed, the Nomination Committee will confirm with each nominee regarding his or her intent and availability to run. This step is important because often times a member is nominated for multiple offices but the By-laws limit each candidate to run for only one office. After this step is completed, an official ballot will be prepared for election at the November general meeting ("Election Night"). Note that nomination is not a pre-requisite for running for office because the ballot will have space for write-in candidates for each office. Who is eligible to run for office? Basically all Life Members and members in good standing who have been a member for at least a year and have helped out at one of our functions are eligible. Because the Junior League is a pilot under our 2010-2015 5-Year Plan and has not been codified into our By-laws, its members are not eligible to run for office. However, a Junior Leaguer interested in running can always adjust his or her status to become a regular member. So there you have it. Now that you know the ins and outs of nominations, would you do the Club a favor by suggesting names of some good people to lead the Club next year? Better yet, step up to the plate! The year 2016 is particularly important because the current 5-Year Plan is scheduled to expire and most likely a new 5-Year Plan will be formulated. Won't you want to be part of this history-making process? See you at the Nomination Night! *Before Deciding to Run Member John Tam’s July 4rth Bar-B-Que 20
