And grant funding by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Fairfax Water kicked off the whole effort. Local high school students and HOA Board members (present and past) as well as the HOA Management team were crucial volunteers alongside the Premier team this time around. From all reports, it was a fun opportunity to help improve the local environment and the planting would not have been possible without the help of these enthusiastic volunteers. The plantings occurred in three additional areas on the eastern side of the community this fall. These new trees will help reduce stormwater runoff in these areas to slow the flow of water, prevent flooding, filter pollutants and protect the health of Sugarland Run, the stream. Sugarland Run flows into the Potomac and local waters (and any associated pollution) eventually reach the Chesapeake Bay. Along with riparian buffers, the trees and floating islands in the pond have enhanced its ability to help clean and protect local streams. This project can now be counted towards Loudoun County’s efforts to reduce its nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment runoff and help achieve its pollution reduction goals. The County is required to meet specific targets that will constitute its “pollution diet” established in December 2010 by EPA for the states with waters draining into the Bay. Every jurisdiction in the Chesapeake Bay watershed has targets to meet, depending on its size. Through this partnership, Sugarland Run HOA is making a contribution to Loudoun’s goals on its common areas. In addition to cleaner water, these trees will further enhance the community landscape with many Virginia native trees improving the habitat throughout the year. Locals should expect to see many kinds of birds and pollinators start visiting as the trees get established. See the box/following article/sidebar(?) for more information on stormwater pollution and ways you can help reduce it on your property. What You Can Do In Your Yard – (http://goo.gl/Zs3UgT) Use fertilizer responsibly • The VCE Loudoun Master Gardeners (http://goo.gl/avvrpz) have a low-cost program to help residents use the right amount of fertilizerat the right time for maximum effectiveness. There are still a few free lawn care analyses left through the partnership with PEC. Contact Gem Bingol at [email protected] and you might be able to snag one of them before they’re gone! 8 SUGARLAND RUN NEWS December 2015 SUGARLAND RUN TEAMS UP FOR CLEANER STREAMS • Even if you use a lawn service, it might be worth it for your time and wallet to check their maintenance schedule against the Master Gardeners’ certified nutrient management plan recommendation. • Using a mulching lawn mower, leave grass clippings in place to take advantage of their nutrients. Minimize watering • Non-native fescue grass (commonly used in the area) naturally goes dormant in the heat of the summer and greens up again in the fall. You can save money and water by not fighting its natural tendency. (http://goo.gl/kcRfOa) • Install a rain barrel to collect rainwater to water your plants and lawn. Landscape with native plants • Plant native trees if you have the space. Consider substituting native shrubs and herbaceous plants and reducing some of your lawn area where you don’t have room for trees. • Native plants help retain more water and build healthier soil than turf grass. Keeping healthy soil in place is critical to reducing all kinds of runoff from your yard. What Are the Sources of Stormwater Pollutants? Pollutant Silt, sand, and clay particles and other debris. Nutrients (Nitrogen & Phosphorus) Disease organisms Hydrocarbons Pesticides Metals Common Sources Construction sites; bare spots in lawns and gardens; wastewater from washing cars and trucks on driveways or parking lots; unprotected stream banks. Over-used or spilled fertilizers; pet manure; grass clippings and leaves left on streets and sidewalks; leaves burned in ditches; goose droppings. Pet manure and garbage Car and truck exhaust; leaks and spills of oil and gas; burning leaves and garbage. Pesticides over-applied or applied before a rain-storm; spills and leaks. Cars and trucks (brakes and tire wear, exhaust); galvanized metal gutters and downspouts. 9 SUGARLAND RUN NEWS Community Activities Committee December 2015 The CAC is always looking for assistance from our community members!
