There are currently eight, colour-coded Metro lines and three FGC urban lines, all air-conditioned - a welcome relief when sightseeing in the hotter summer months. Single tickets cost around €2, but it may be smarter to purchase a T10 Transport Ticket if you’re planning on doing a lot of Metro travel. This will entitle you to 10 journeys within Zone 1, and you can purchase the same type of ticket for different zones if needed. Buy at any station entrance. Alternatively, the Barcelona Card features unlimited travel across the network (including buses and trams), plus discounts on entrance fees, shows and even meals at selected restaurants. Bus Index SURVIVAL GUIDE Public Transport Bus Barcelona’s network of buses covers more than 80 routes, connecting the city centre with surrounding districts. Buses can be used in combination with other modes of transport like the tram and Metro, but when you’re changing lines or transport during one journey, you’ll need to validate the ticket on the next transport within an hour and 15 minutes. These integrated transport tickets such as the T10 (10 journeys within Zone 1) or the T-Dia (unlimited journeys in one day) can be purchased in Metro stations. If you buy on the bus however, this single ticket can only be used once and not on other transport. Request stops before you get off by pressing the ‘sollicitut de parada’ button. taxi Index SURVIVAL GUIDE Public Transport Taxi Not as pricey an option as you may think, taxis are a good alternative to buses and the Metro if you’re in a rush or travelling with those who are less mobile. Use the official city cabs if in doubt - these are yellow and black, showing a green light if it’s available to flag down. On average, you’ll pay around €10.00 for a 15-minute journey, plus an optional tip (5-10% of the total fare is welcomed). Look on the inside of the window for current rates; there may be supplements to and from the airport and on public holidays. You can also pre-order a taxi if you prefer or are travelling with more than 4 people (some taxis are not licensed to take a higher number of passengers): Ràdio Taxi - 933 033 033 www.radiotaxi033.com Barnataxi - 933 222 222 www.barnataxi.com Taxi Amic - 934 208 088 www.taxi-amic-adaptat.com walking Index SURVIVAL GUIDE Public Transport Walking Walking is actually one of the best ways to navigate Barcelona. Much of the modest-sized city centre is well designed for pedestrians, with plenty of car-free zones like the huge, lively thoroughfare of Las Ramblas. Strolling through the squares and Medieval alleyways of the Gothic Quarter is also the most pleasant way of seeing some of the amazing architecture here. You may need to hop on local transport to tour Gaudi’s legacy across the city, but getting to and around areas like Montjuïc can be easier on foot (via the Plaça Espanya escalators) as the Metro does not run up the hill. If you want a bit of insider knowledge as you orient yourself, take a walking tour with a local guide, some of which are free. barca airport Index SURVIVAL GUIDE Airport Transfers Barcelona International Airport Barcelona International Airport is the main destination for visitors to the city. The airport is situated 13 km from the centre and there are a number of travel options to take you into the city. The Aerobus costs around €5.90 and the RENFE train is €3.80; both services take around 25 minutes. girona Index SURVIVAL GUIDE Airport Transfers Girona Airport Girona Airport offers another way to enter Catalonia. Located 103 km from Barcelona, it takes around 70 minutes to travel into Barcelona from here. The Barcelona Bus costs around €15 for a single ticket and €25 for a return. The picturesque and historic town of Girona is worth a visit in its own right too. reus airport Index SURVIVAL GUIDE Airport Transfers Reus Airport Reus Airport is situated 3 km from the town of Reus and 7 km from the city of Tarragona. Barcelona itself is 103 km away on the bus to get into Barcelona city. It costs approximately €12.50 for a single and €22 for a return ticket on the bus. The journey takes around an hour and a half. currency Index SURVIVAL GUIDE Currency and living costs To enjoy the colourful city of Barcelona, you’ll need some Euros. Credit cards are widely accepted and traveller’s cheques can be used, but keep small amounts of cash on you (it’s sensible to divide your holiday money and keep some in your accommodation). You can go to a bank or exchange bureau from Monday - Saturday to get money out, but ATMs are a quick and easy way of accessing cash otherwise. Cost of living doesn’t have to amount to much in Barcelona. Dinner for two in a friendly bar averages at €28 (depending on how much sangria you order, of course) and a cappuccino will normally cost you around €2.50. A five mile taxi trip should total at around €14 but you can get around for cheaper on the very handy metro and bus systems. Tipping is not mandatory but give 5-10% should you wish to. sagrada familia Index SURVIVAL GUIDE Basílica de la Sagrada Familia Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia is the unfinished basilica that attracts over three million visitors a year. This bizarrely bold and beautiful piece of religious architecture was designed over 100 years ago and is set to be finished by 2026. It is a marvel for the eyes and people often queue for up to two hours to get inside and look around! It’s best to book tickets online in advance to avoid such queues. After entering the building, visitors are treated to the impressively crafted décor of the church and crypt. You can also pay respects at Gaudi’s tomb, or make your way to the top of the towers and Nativity façade for a unique outlook across the city. For those who don’t wish to pay, simply take in the imposing towers on Barcelona’s skyline from outside. Make your way here on a hop-on-hop-off tour bus, or get off at Sagrada Familia metro station. These powered bikes make steep hills a breeze and hours of pedalling become a pleasure rather than a challenge. What’s more, you can access some of the lesser-known corners of the city, free-wheeling through districts like Raval and El Born to discover bodegas frequented by a local few, rather than the visiting masses. Tours of the big-name Gaudi attractions are available, with queuejumping privileges, so it’s worth looking into as an alternative way of seeing the sights. The socalled ‘bicing’ movement is all over Barcelona, so if you want to conduct your own tour, you can rent electric wheels quite cheaply by the hour from various outlets around the city, including Barceloneta Beach. Compete with opposing teams on foot as you solve cryptic clues, take photos of historic landmarks and race against the clock to reach your final destination, picking up a wealth of inside knowledge as you go. Some hunts are designed around gastronomic or cultural themes, can include lunch stops, and they often have special grand prizes, like a bottle of local Cava! Witness it all here and take part in selecting grape blends before creating your own wine label for a personal bottle of bubbles that you get to take with you. With a fair few samples to try along the way, you won’t regret dipping out of the city for an afternoon. Transport from the metro station and lunch can be added on. Officially called Parc de Laberint d’Horta, point your compass north of the city centre to find the start; as the oldest park in the city (1791), a limited number of visitors are permitted every day. It’s worth the effort though: an ornate, ordered garden guarded by Neoclassical pavilions gives way to a twisting, turning hedge maze that will have you scratching your head long before you reach the central statue of Eros. A smooth jazz soundtrack plays in the background, though the bar room is barely big enough for a shimmy along the floorboards. Nonetheless, this is a cool hangout set apart from the rowdier streets of Born, and you’ll feel like you’ve time-travelled back a good few decades as you step inside.
