DODGER BASEBALL HISTORY
1935-39
Russ Bergman and Johnny Stillwell led a team to Madison’s first “Little
Five” Championship in 1937. The other for teams in the conference
were Millburn, Caldwell, Glen Ridge and Summit. Russ Bergman was
the best short stop in 3 counties and was drafted by the NY Yankees
in ’37. He played AA and AAA ball for 3 years and performed well.
In 1941 he was called up by the Yankees to the Bronx in September.
That winter, he was drafted and served in WWII for 4 years. He never
played baseball again.
Johnny Stillwell who also served in WWII was killed in action.
Other members of those teams and long-time Madisonians were Jack
Livsey, Joe Falco and Benny Pasapia.
1963 - 1963 - The team went 12-3 under Coach Bruce Derrick. It was
a young and promising team.
Peter Jileba hit .482 as a sophomore.
1964 - Madison won the State Group II Championship with a 12-4
record.
This team was led by Captain Bobby Mauro, catcher, Doug Hale who
threw a No Hitter, Peter Jileba and pitcher Carl Caskey. Mauro was
considered one of the two best catchers in the State. He was drafted by
the Boston Red Sox. Mauro was All Conference, all County and second team All State. He played football and Baseball for the University
of South Carolina attaining All ACC in Football
Peter Jileba was a Junior and hit .428 though he was visiting
over 20 colleges for football and dozens of Big 10, ACC, and SEC
football coaches visited Madison to speak to him. Jileba struck
out 12 batters in one game and walked an equal number!
Jim Kick of Miami Dolphin NFL fame played for a very good
Boonton team.
In the 50’s and 60’s the top 16 teams in New Jersey were invited
to play in the
Greater Newark Tournament (GNT).
Madison lost the third game (semis) to eventual winner Saint
Benedicts.
Bobby Mauro threw out four runners in two games to make his
mark as the best catcher in New Jersey!
Jileba amazed the crowds with his Mantlesque home runs!
1965 - With a record of 14-3, Madison was again invited back to
the Greater Newark Tournament. They finished second to Parsippany.
For Parsippany, a right fielder with a gun-arm was Richie Zisk.
Zisk was drafted in the MLB 2nd round and played right field
for the World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates where he hit #5 behind Hall of Famer Willie Stargell. In Zisk’s rookie season, 1973,
he batted .324 with ten home runs. He spent 13 yrs in Major
League Baseball and was an All-Star.
Madison won County and State Group II crowns.
Jileba drafted by the Cubs, was recruited by over 100 colleges
for football. He went on to play both football for Bear Bryant at
Alabama and wrestle there as well.

only coach in Madison history who both played and coached for
state championship teams.
1994
Madison beats Glen Ridge for State Section II Title. Coached by
Bob Chandler and Captained by twin brothers Dan and Dusty
Rhodes, this team earned the moniker of “the Comeback Kids.”
The team had a record of 19 and 7. Of the 19 wins---9 were
come-from-behind victories! Despite the fields being covered
with snow until the first week in Apri l, the team gelled early.
In addition to the Sec. II crown, they finished second in the Conference and third in Morris County.
2011
